Sacred Heart made strong through its members

By Mary Kay Head and Vanessa Velez-Rivera

Last month we focused on the Liturgy Commission. This month we will continue with an in-depth look at the Hispanic Ministry.

We at Sacred Heart are blessed with diversity, and most noticea-bly with the Spanish speaking members of this parish. They are very active in their ministry as well as within the parish.

The coordinators of the His-panic Ministry are Mar ivel Ar-zate and Joanna Guzman. They work closely with our pastor, Fr. Francis Doyle. Under these coor-dinators are two main groups, the Monday evening Rosary group and the Friday evening Hour of Prayer group.

The Monday evening Rosary group meets at 6:45 p.m. in the church. Juana Alvarado is Coordi-nator, Silvia Blaguer is Sub-

coordinator, Ruth Walters is Sec-retary and Jacqueline De la Cruz is Treasurer. While the youth are meeting for their religion classes, the adults meet to pray.

The Friday evening Hour of Prayer meets at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Avelina Rubio is Coordi-nator, Jacqueline De La Cruz is Sub-coordinator, Marivel Arzate is Secretary, Lucy Valdez is treas-urer, and IT is Vanessa Velez-Rivera. by Vanessa Velez-Rivera. They meet in the Education Building from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday evenings.

Liturgical Roles for the Spanish Mass are coordinated by Vanessa Velez-Rivera. Training for the various roles is provided by: Lectors – Vanessa Velez-Rivera; Extraordinary Ministers of Communion – Nancy Ballinas and Marivel Arzate; Altar Servers – Gerardo Arzate; and Hospitality Ministers – Manuel Lopez.

The Choir is coordinated by Mario de Los Angeles. They meet on Sunday mornings for practice, and perform not only at the Span-ish Mass, but also at bi-lingual Masses, the Friday evening Hour of Prayer, and various other func-tions.

The Decorations Ministry co-ordinated by Citlali Hernandez, stays busy throughout the year. Bright colors, flowers and symbols are used in keeping with their tra-ditions.

Also a part of this ministry is

the Baptism coordinator, Jacquel-ine De La Cruz, the Wedding co-ordinator, Nancy Ballinas, the ta-male Fundraiser coordinator, Jua-na Alvarado and the Diocesan Representatives, Manuel Lopez and Josefina Beltran. They all join together to plan their annual Re-treat.

There are feasts with cultural traditions of special importance to this group. They are Nov. 1, All Saints Day and Nov. 2, the Day of the Dead (All Souls Day), which they celebrate together, and Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Having such a strong and ac-tive Spanish community in our midst has allowed Sacred Heart to see and learn first-hand the true meaning of a universal church. Yes we are many parts, but we are all one body in Christ who came for us all.

Next month we will highlight the Knights of Columbus, a group of men who add much to our par-ish and our community in many ways.

Attend the Women’s Retreat - Building a Mary

Heart in a Martha World

By Glenda Kelly

There is a story in the Gospel of Luke that demonstrates the type of relationship God wants to have with each of us. In the story Jesus was visiting the home of two sis-ters, Mary and Martha, when Mar-tha came to him to complain about Mary not helping her.

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was dis-tracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has cho-sen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10:38-42 NIV

Do you, like Martha, find your-self caught up in the busyness of daily life? Are you looking for an opportunity to take a break from your everyday life and meet with the Lord in a special way? If so,

you won’t want to miss the wom-en’s retreat, Building a Mary Heart in a Martha World, which is being offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 in the Activity Building.

The retreat, presented by the Health Ministry Team from Sacred Heart Parish in Sedalia, will in-clude activities, reflection, prayer, fun and fellowship focused on be-ing more like Mary in a Martha world. Pre-registration is required for the event. There will be a $15 fee at the door to cover lunch, ma-terials and the presenters. No babysitting is available.

Women invest a lot of time and energy into their families, work, churches, and communities. Often they sacrifice their own needs for others and frequently experience stress. Stress that's left unchecked can contribute to many health problems such as high blood pres-sure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. A retreat helps women recharge, feel encouraged, and be spiritually fed. Take time to take care of yourself and plan to attend.

Health Ministry reports that work continues on redoing the brochure for Sacred Heart Cares. Also they would like to increase awareness of stroke prevention through blood pressure control and so would like to have BP screening available at the parish picnic in September. They considered putting on a fire extinguisher demonstration at the picnic but decided that might not be the best place for it. They also have plans for a women’s retreat called “How to Build a Mary Heart in a Martha World”. This will be September 10, put on by women from Sacred Heart Parish in Sedalia. More details will be in the bulletin.

Old Business Bazaar committee reports that Sonia Potts has agreed to take over

the Jewelry sales booth. Johanna asked if choir CD’s will be available for sale at the bazaar and Miriam will check to see if there are any left.

Continuing research on having Religious articles for sale - Johanna has spoken with Father Francis about this and he is agreeable, but may not realize that an initial expenditure of several hundred dollars will be needed to build the display cabinet and stock it with a sampling of items, so more discussion will be done with Father Francis and the store in Jefferson City that would supply the articles for sale.

New Business Time & Talent forms were reviewed and corrected in preparation

for the upcoming Time and Talent weekend. Received a request from a parishioner to see if Social Concerns

would help with funds for a couple of charities that she supports. Miri-am will ask her for specific ideas about activities that might benefit those charities.

Heart of the Matter ▪ September 2016 ▪ Page 4

Adult Education at Sacred Heart is offering an opportunity starting this fall that may interest you. An on-going program in Faith and Min-istry Formation will begin Thursday, Sept. 8, and continue to meet eve-ry other week throughout the fall and spring.

The format is small group processing, and your task is to read the assignments, reflect, and be ready to share your insights with the group. General topics to be included are Church, faith, Eucharist, spirituality, as well as skills that are foundational in ministry such as communica-tion and collaboration. Toward the end of the program, you will have the opportunity to conduct your own Guided Practice of Ministry in which you immerse yourself in a project in the parish or the wider com-munity.

This is an opportunity to grow in your religious faith and personal self-understanding. Due to the small group format, space is limited. Participants from the other parishes are invited to join.

For more information and to enroll, contact Mary C. Heimburger, 573-823-5828, [email protected].

our Sunday Life Nights at 6:45 p.m. with a dinner. Strong com-munity is built around the dinner table, and we are excited to incor-porate this important ministry into the program. We still meet in the Youth Room (basement of the Education Building) until 8:30 p.m.

Each third Thursday of the month, CoMo Life Teen will have XLT (short for “Exalt”) at 7:30 p.m. We meet in the Disciples Room at the Newman Center for an incredible witness talk, then move to the sanctuary of the church for some face to face time with Jesus in eucharistic adora-tion, and finish up with some snacks and social time.

In Addition to Sunday Life Nights and XLT, the youth group will have a day in each of the par-ishes in Columbia this semester to practice Corporal Works of Mercy as we learn about the Spiritual Works of Mercy. All high school students are welcome to all of our events and we hope to see you there!

Along with Life Teen, we are also excited that Confirmation classes have begun! The Rite of Welcome for the 2016-2017 Con-firmation will be held on Sept. 25 at the 11 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart and the 5 p.m. Mass at the Newman Center. This Mass will be a wonderful opportunity to meet the Confirmation class and assure them of the parish’s prayers throughout their journey towards the beautiful sacrament of Confir-mation.

Thank you for your continuous support and prayers for our Youth programs, and let’s get ready for a great Fall semester!

School has begun which means that the Parish School of Religion will be starting soon. On-site regis-trations were held the weekends of Aug. 20 and 27. Online registra-tions are still being accepted via the parish website http://www.sacredheart-church.org/parish-school-of-religion and on-site registrations on the first day of class, Sept. 11.

We encourage all kindergarten through eighth grade students in our parish to attend. We do ask that families be registered mem-bers of Sacred Heart. Cost is $25 per student for the year which co-vers the cost of student and class-room materials. Our primary text this year for grades 3-8 will be the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies, which reviews the Sunday readings in light of our Catholic faith. The Weeklies will be supplemented with the materials from the Find-ing God series from Loyola Press. The second grade's primary text will be Finding God supplemented by the Weeklies. Kindergarten and first grade will use the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd materials supplemented by the Weeklies.

Our catechists are volunteers and we are fortunate to have many returning catechists. We welcome Chelsea Bertrand and Cameron Olson to first grade and Pat Quint to fourth grade. We are looking for assistants and substitute catechists. If you're a high school student and want to help, we are looking for your help as well as all teachers have requested your assistance in the classroom. If you're interested in helping out in our PSR program, please contact the church office for further information.

Since we were unable to sched-ule an Open House prior to our first class session, the catechists have requested that the parents come with their children so that they can review policies and plans for the 2016-2017 catechetical year.

The atrium is nearly complete but if anyone has a low table, ie coffee table or bed stand they've been wondering what to do with, we could use it, as we are short on low tables. I want to thank all those who have been so kind in helping to prepare the atrium for our K/1 students by providing ma-terials. It is truly appreciated.

“Amen I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” (Mark 10:13)

Padre Pio- His gifts were a mystery, his love goes on Padre Pio (Francesco Fiogione) knew at 5 years old he wanted to devote his

life to God. His mom said he loved to pray and go to church. Even though many people did not believe it, Francesco always talked to his guardian angel, Jesus, and Mary.

At 15, he entered Capuchin Order of the Friars Minor in Marcone, Italy. He was ordained a priest when he was just 23. He loved to say the Mass, but could not say it like other priests. Because Padre Pio was so holy, many people came to him, not only for confession, but also when they needed help and guidance in their lives. He was so focused on God and his prayer, he developed wounds in his hands just like those of Jesus that actually smelled good. He ate very little food, slept very little, and worked 19 hours a day.

He was able to heal people, could be seen at two places at one time, and performed miracles. He could tell the future, he could see spirits, tell if a per-son’s spirit was good or bad, speak and understand languages he did not study, bring people to Jesus, and he could see angels. He warned against watching tv because it distracts us from treating others the way we want to be treated, sur-rounds us with information to make us believe things are important that really are not important (like expensive cars and phones) and makes us less hurt and sad when we see bad things happening to other people. He was humble, and quiet. He admitted he did not know why he could do these things, but always gave the credit back to God. He told everyone to pray the rosary, and told peo-ple that all Jesus wants is for our souls to be made sacred.

“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is the Church.”

Padre Pio pray for us! His feast day is September 23rd. http://padrepiodevotions.org/a-short-biography/

Liturgy Commission

By Mary Kay Head

Note: the August Liturgy Com-mission meeting is traditionally a social gathering. The members met at Coley’s American Bistro for a short business meeting, then enjoyed a great meal and conver-sation.

Old Business Year of Mercy - in an effort to

celebrate this more throughout the year, we discussed adding an oc-casional prayer of intercession and Kendra will search for a prayer that could be recited as we prepare for Mass.

Sound System update – this is being handled through the Parish Council as part of the Parish Vi-sioning process.

New Lector process - now ready to add a 2nd reader pending the time & talent results.

New Business Director of Liturgy report -

Chris requested a committee be formed to prepare for the Mass of Remembrance. This will include both English and Spanish. Chris, Mary Kay and Debbie will be on the committee. The Mass will be

on All Souls Day, Wed., Nov. 2. Liturgical thought on the prop-

er location of the tabernacle. We should read about it and look at what is liturgically advised. To review in September.

Training of new altar servers is ongoing.

Interest in small groups and a Parish-wide retreat - a lot hinges on the selection of "speaker" or facilitator. Will need to plan now to get a good speaker in the future. This will be discussed more at the Sept. meeting. All need to consid-er if able to participate in planning and organizing.

Carolyn is stepping away from being the Parish Council repre-sentative from Liturgy Commis-sion. Charlie will finish out the term. March is the normal end of term, so we can review who will continue. We can review the term and decide length of term.

Time to think about a new Chair for Liturgy Commission. Julie has chaired for eight years, and is ready to step down when successor is named.

Next meeting: Sept. 27.

Parish Council

By Rick Clawson

The Parish Council met Aug. 9, 2016, at 6:15 p.m., in the Library. The meeting opened with a prayer offered by Fr. Francis Doyle.

Old Business A Master Plan Committee was formed to make recommendations

concerning parish facilities – renovation, upgrade, replacement, etc. Parishioners who were appointed to the committee include Keith Mil-ler, Marty Walker, Vaughn Prost, Ron Kelley, Jolyn Sattizahn, Mike Grellner, Dave Sheahen, and Tim Jeffries. They will take the infor-mation gathered for the Parish Vision and consider how to meet the needs of the parish going forward. A report is expected by the end of the year.

We discussed a proposal for upgrading the sound system in the church. The consensus was to proceed with planning the upgrade while simultaneously raising funds to pay for it. The total cost for the project will be $30,000 or less. The Sacred Heart Foundation has $6,000 ear-marked for the sound system and a parishioner has pledged another $1,000 towards the upgrade. Therefore, all that is needed is another $23,000 to make the improvement a reality. Other possible funding ideas were discussed and the Foundation was suggested as a logical focal point for donations and involvement in the fundraising.

New Business We discussed holding a parish assembly early next year. The Mas-

ter Plan Committee report should be available by then and it would be a good opportunity for the various commissions to present their activities and plans to the parish.

The meeting closed with all present reciting the Sacred Heart Parish Visioning Prayer.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be Sept. 13, 2016, at 6:15 p.m.

Living in the town of Rosebud By Miriam Hankins

Every day the news seems to contain stories of strife between police officers and communities of color, and the violence seems to have escalated tremendously since the situation that occurred in Fergu-son, Mo, in late 2014. Although the deaths of African American men at the hands of police, and targeted shootings of police officers in re-turn, are shocking and tragic, there was one associated incident that I found especially disturbing.

After the unrest in Ferguson, a march was organized by the

NAACP that was to go from St. Louis to Jefferson City. Along the way, the 50 or so marchers were often greeted by folks who had re-freshments for them. However, the route along Highway 50 took them through the town of Rosebud. About 200 local residents met the marchers with hostility. Some even had white cloths covering their fac-es mimicking the white hoods of the KKK, and some were waving Confederate flags. I can only imag-ine the fear the marchers felt as they walked, outnumbered, through this gauntlet of hate.

Our recent Scripture readings at Mass have been about the man set upon by robbers as he traveled and how the Samaritan was the only one to stop and help. We have been challenged by the question of who is our neighbor. I thought we had made progress as a nation in over-coming racism, but the reality that we haven’t has been quite stark. The racism in Rosebud was blatant, but I wonder how much still dwells in many hearts that isn’t so visible. How many of us still reside in an internal town like Rosebud where only a spark of mob mentality

could unleash our own racist tendencies?

It would be so easy to point our fingers at the residents of Rosebud,

or the police officers who have shown improper restraint in dealing with people of color, or the persons who have ambushed and murdered police officers, but we are remind-ed by Scripture that we should at-

tend to the log in our own eye, or the racism within our own hearts, before we judge and condemn oth-ers.

Continuing The Spiritual Journey: Freedom from storms

By E. Jane Rutter

Recently I sat in the dark lobby of a Dodge City hotel with

strangers while tornadoes swirled overhead. In this atmosphere of high alert, nature supplied the beat-ing rain, howling wind and pum-meling of hail the

size of softballs. Man completed the symphony with blaring sirens and emergency vehicles. That night, the city was mostly lucky, dodging tragedies that mark its past. But the season had just begun.

“Wait until 5 p.m. tomorrow,” the locals told me, tutoring me on the hows and whens of weather pat-terns over the Plains.

Within a few hours the sky had cleared, signal-ing the end of round one. The show was over, the lights came on and the storm watchers dissipated. The locals were right though, round two was predicted for the next evening and throughout the week.

In the quiet following the storm, I thought about man’s rela-tionship to nature. I thought of farmers who cultivate the soil to best receive and grow the crops they plant. They nurture the pro-cess from beginning to end in the hope that their sweat will produce good yields with which to grace the dinner tables of all those for whom they labor.

They toil, all the while under-standing that nature controls the

outcome. On one hand, a violent storm can devastate their work in a matter of minutes; on the other hand, the sun and rain can provide an abundant yield that fills their barns and silos.

At home for Memorial Day, David and I rise early in the morn-ing and ride our bikes before the heat of the day sets in. Eleven miles on the old railway bed that has been repurposed into a trail.

The view is spectacular, from the corn and soybean fields plant-ed on fertile bottom lands to the river lapping alongside the bank.

The breeze carries the fragrance of honeysuckle and the squir-rels and rab-bits scamper into the brush as we go by. In the quiet that surrounds us, I think about Elijah

hearing God’s voice in the whisper of the wind and Jesus rowing off to a distant shore in search of soli-tude from the crowds. I think about man’s longing for freedom from the storms of life.

Like those who farm the land, I realize that we have no control over the storms, whether tornadoes will form or the sun will shine. Our freedom lies in cultivating our gifts with gratitude for God’s bounty and sharing the fruits of our labor as God intends.

And so I pray: Dear Lord, bless those who have given their lives for freedom and those who serve so that we may be safe from the storms of hate, dominance and captivity. Help us cultivate your beauty, love and peace.

Language program to start new session By Pat Gerke

If you look around at any of the weekend Masses, it will be plain to see that Sacred Heart Parish is the church home for people from many diverse cultures. I have always felt that we are so blessed to be host to people from all over the world, right here in our small parish in the middle of the USA.

In 2014 Sister Mary Clare, with the help of volunteers, started a program called the English Tutori-al Program to unite Sacred Heart parishioners with parishioners seeking to improve their English language skills.

The 2016-2017 board members are hard at work to prepare for the fall semester. We are preparing the classroom spaces, gathering teach-ing materials and planning an evening where tutors and learners will meet and to match up.

Committees are meeting to ex-pand the program to include sever-al social learning groups that will enhance leadership and intercultur-al connections among English speakers and non-English speakers within our parish.

If you have an interest in be-coming a weekly tutor, we would love to have you join us in this

worthwhile endeavor. A five-week training session

will begin on Sept. 13, and classes will be held each Tuesday evening from 7-9:30 p.m. at the First Bap-tist Church. If you are interested in becoming a tutor and taking the training sessions, please call Pat Gerke at 573-356-1049 to register.

If you or someone you know might benefit from the English Tutorial Program, please contact Audrey Hagan at [email protected] or Frank Appelgate (Spanish) at 660-621-0613 or Pat Gerke at [email protected].
