One look at Hawai‘i’s unique history and you’ll understand why Hawaiian Electric Industries is proud to provide the energy for our state’s future. The visionary King Kalakaua explored the world, gained new insights from other heads of state, and pioneered the introduction of electricity to the islands. Indeed, ‘Iolani Palace was electrified even before the White House. Today, through our subsidiaries, Hawaiian Electric Company and American Savings Bank, we see a future with our state at the forefront of clean energy, creating a sustainable and growing local economy for our families and our communities.

Being Hawai‘i-based is both a privilege and a responsibility: we have a shared kuleana (responsibility) to care for our islands and the quality of life we hold dear. Our respect for the past, commitment to the present and sense of responsibility for the future inspire our journey towards a vibrant and sustainable Hawai‘i for generations to come.

Hawaiian Electric CompanyFor more than 100 years, the Hawaiian Electric Companies have provided the electricity that has fueled our islands and met the demands of the people of Hawaii and emerging technologies. Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawai‘i Electric Light serve 95 percent of our state—which gives us great opportunity to work with our communities and together, achieve the most ambitious clean energy goals in the nation.

With our focus on a stable, affordable, clean energy future for all of our customers, Hawaiian Electric is pursuing short and long-term solutions that include on-going operational efficiencies; liquefied natural gas that is cheaper and cleaner than oil; deactivation of older, less efficient fossil-fueled generating plants; fast-track utility-scale solar projects that would lower our overall costs per megawatt hour; and greater residential and commercial access to renewable energy sources.

We are currently at 18% renewable generation–already surpassing our state’s 15% goal by 2015. Rooftop solar doubled nearly every year since 2008 and we lead the nation in the integration of this renewable technology, which 10% of our O‘ahu customers now utilize. And with the development of multiple utility-scale solar centers and wind farms on our islands, we are on path to hit the 40% renewable energy benchmark by 2030.

Commitment to our journey has required resolute courage and an innovative spirit from our people and partners. By collaborating with national experts, innovators, policy makers, entrepreneurs and members within our community, we believe Hawai‘i will continue to lead the nation in clean energy innovation.

ingEnuiTyamerican Savings BankAt American Savings Bank, we see ourselves as builders, not just bankers, as we play an important role in the health and vitality of our communities. Since its humble beginnings in the 1920s as a savings and loan institution in downtown Honolulu to a $5 billion full service bank with 57 branches across the state, our business has always been about serving and investing in Hawai‘i’s families, businesses and communities.

American Savings Bank is a market leader in home loans, equity lines of credit, and clean energy financing. As one of the first banks in Hawai‘i to offer vendor financing to solar and rooftop photovoltaic installers, we have helped our customers save money while reducing their carbon footprint.

Our continued quest for better solutions for customers drives our innovation. We recently expanded ASB Hawai‘i Mobile, the first mobile banking service in Hawai‘i to offer digital capture of checks from a smartphone. And we continue to fortify our customer information systems, serving as a true partner and resource for our customers.

We are very proud of our growing reputation as a great place to work—Hawaii Business magazine named American Savings Bank one of the Best Places to Work in Hawai‘i for the fifth consecutive year, and we were recognized nationally as one of the Best Banks to Work For by American Banker magazine in its inaugural ranking. Together, we are charting our course to help our customers, communities, and Hawai‘i grow and prosper.

As we strive for a better Hawai‘i, we continue to preserve the values, culture and quality of life we experience in Hawai‘i—specifically in the areas of environmental sustainability, educational excellence and economic growth. Our Journey Towards a Better Hawai‘i Voyaging was an important part of the ancient Polynesian culture. Prior to instrument panels and technology, navigators looked to the stars, wind, and waves to provide cues for their course. Each voyage was guided by the principles of vision, planning, community-building, preparation for the journey, calculated risk-taking, and collective learning.

Now more than ever, our interdependence is the key to navigating our future. As on a canoe, our ability to survive and thrive is directly dependent on our ability to help one another. We are bringing together the best and the brightest to ask rigorous questions, develop new solutions, broker new partnerships and facilitate the leadership conversations that align all parties toward an abundant future for all of us here in the islands. A sincere mahalo (thank you) for your steadfast support in this journey and for your shared commitment towards a vibrant and sustainable Hawai‘i.

HEI is a proud patron of Hokule‘a. Join us on this journey at Hokulea.org.
