INTRODUCTION

‘Heta Belarus Dzietka’ started in 2014 as a blog about Belarus written by us, two blond blue-eyed girls who view the country through foreign eyes. We (Masha & Marta) were both born in Belarus but raised in the Netherlands and the United States. This enabled us to view Belarus from a foreigner’s perspective, but at the same time to understand and explain why things are the way they are.

The title “Heta Belarus Dzietka” was born as a typical reaction to people’s comments and questions about Belarus. “WHY do people behind the cash register seem like they are very angry?”, or “WHY is the hot water turned off for two weeks in the summer?” or “WHY do Belarusian women all look like movie stars?” A friend of ours always answered with “Heta Belarus Dzietka”, meaning “That’s Belarus, babe”, just accept it, get used to it and move on. And that is what we did: we not only accepted it but also embraced it! Together with our readers we would like to celebrate this Belarusian uniqueness.

Throughout this book about the sometimes strange, special and affectionate things we have encountered in Belarus, we will lead you on a journey to help you understand the character of Belarus, which we love so much.

Heta Belarus Dzietka, illustrates, questions, celebrates and pokes a little fun at the nation of bulba love, the cubic National Library, superwomen and generous folk. All in the name of fun and with great affection.

So we invite everyone who is a little curious about Belarus — foreigners who have lived, are living, or are planning to live in Belarus AND Belarusians who have most probably never even considered these everyday things worth writing about — to read this book. We hope that locals in particular can appreciate the humour and not take themselves too seriously.

УВОДЗІНЫ

«Гэта Беларусь, дзетка» стартавала ў 2014 годзе як блог пра Беларусь, напісаны намі, дзвюма бялявымі блакітнавокімі дзяўчынамі, якія глядзяць на краіну вачыма замежнікаў. Мы (Маша і Марта) нарадзіліся ў Беларусі, але гадавалі нас ў Галандыі і Злучаных Штатах. Гэта дазваляе нам убачыць Беларусь такой, якой паўстае яна перад вачыма іншаземцаў, але ў той жа час разумець і тлумачыць, чаму ўсё так, як яно ёсць.

Назва «Гэта Беларусь, дзетка» нарадзілася як тыповая рэакцыя на каментары і пытанні людзей пра Беларусь. “ЧАМУ спадарыні за касай выглядаюць быццам яны злыя?” ці “ЧАМУ ўлетку гарачую ваду адключаюць на два тыдні?”, або “ЧАМУ беларускія жанчыны выглядаюць быццам зоркі кіно?” Наш сябар заўсёды адказваў «гэта Беларусь, дзетка»: проста прымі гэта, прызвычайся ды руш далей. Так мы і зрабілі: мы не толькі прынялі, але і пачалі з задавальненнем гэтым карыстацца! Разам з нашымі чытачамі мы хацелі б уславіць беларускую самабытнасць і ўнікальнасць.

З гэтай кнігай пра часам дзівакаватыя, незвычайныя і мілыя сэрцу рэчы, якія мы сустрэлі ў Беларусі, мы накіруем вас у падарожжа, каб дапамагчы зразумець, чым адметная краіна, якую мы так любім. «Гэта Беларусь, дзетка» ілюструе, даследуе, святкуе ды трошкі жартуе з нацыі бульбаманаў, кубічнай нацыянальнай бібліятэкі, супержанчын ды шчодрасці людзей — усё дзеля забавы ды з вялікай пяшчотай.

Таму мы запрашаем прачытаць гэтую кнігу кожнага, каго хоць трошкі цікавіць Беларусь, — замежнікаў, якія жылі, жывуць, або плануюць жыць тут, А ТАКСАМА беларусаў, якія хутчэй за ўсё ніколі не задумваліся над тым, што такія штодзённыя рэчы вартыя свайго аповеду. Мы спадзяёмся, што менавіта мясцовы люд здольны як след ацаніць наш гумар ды не надта ўжо сур’ёзна да сябе паказаных тут паставіцца.

here are many inaccurate and funny stereotypes concerning Belarus.

According to a humorous world atlas created by Yanko Tsvetkov1,

The French think of Belarusians as “White-skinned Russians”, while

the Germans label Belarus simply as “Gas Transit Country”, the

Italians prefer the term “Terra Incognita” and Latin Americans refer

to it as “Cuba Europea”. But probably the most common stereotype that

foreigners hold towards the Belarusians is closely linked to the French

version: White-Skinned Russians.

Many foreigners often get confused between Russia and Belarus and think

that we are talking about one and the same country, that Belarus is Russia

and Russia is Belarus; others just think that Belarus is a place inside Russia.

This confusion often causes much frustration to many Belarusians living within and outside Belarus. Besides the almost non-existent media coverage on Belarus (except on some political occasions), the cause of much confusion derives from the wrong way the country’s

name is translated in many countries, namely ‘White Russia’ instead of the legal name of the Republic of Belarus. Many countries in Europe and beyond make this mistake.

So if it is not White Russia, I hear you think, what is it then?! To keep it

short and simple, while ‘Bela’ does mean white, ‘Rus’ has a different

geographical and political meaning than Russia. ‘Rus’ refers to Ruthenia, the

Eastern Slavic lands that nowadays mostly belong to Belarus and Ukraine. In

the modern Belarusian language there is a clear distinction between Ruski

(referring to Ruthenia) and Rasiejski (referring to Russia). Therefore, it would

be correct to call Belarus “White-Rus” rather than White Russia — or just

stick to Belarus.

So be careful when you compare the two countries: they may share the

same history, language and gas, but they are two completely different

nations! Heta Belarus, Dzietka!
