Cover Photo: It is not often we see British Sprint Champion Colin Calder competing on home turf, even if it is at the opposite end of Scotland from his Thurso home. He doubled with younger daughter Louise in her Jedi at Kames on the opening round of the Guyson Scottish Sprint Championship, losing to her on Saturday but being faster next day. Les Mutch set FTD both days in his Raptor.
The opening month of the 2015 season has thrown up more talking points than usual. The Guyson sprint weekend at Kames did not escape the Arctic blasts which swept the West of Scotland for most of April and while the contest itself did not suffer it was a reminder how unreliable the Scottish climate can be in April and October. The following weekend saw superb conditions at Doune but a number of incidents, some relat-ing to new wooden barriers on the top half of the hill caused delays which curtailed the programme both days.
But it was the problem at one of the top English hillclimbs which at-tracted most attention, when several leading contestants failed to meet the reduced noise limits imposed after a local complaint. We all have strong feelings on this but it does underline the importance of keeping on the right side of Joe Public, even when there does not appear to be an issue. Back to the sport, here are the National results:
The Calder family Gould had to be retired at the opening sprint round of the National championship in Wiltshire, handing victory to Mark Smith in a two litre Reynard he shared with runner-up Craig Sampson. There was a better entry for the second round at Croft where Colin Calder won with daughter Heather in the runner-up spot..
Scott Moran got off to a perfect start in defending his British Hillclimb title with a double win at Prescott. Taking the runner-up spot on both run-offs was his new co-driver Alex Summers, replacing Scott’s dad Roger. Wallace Menzies overshot on the first session but later finished sixth equal in the other run-off.

William Shakespeare’s word’s four hundred years ago would sum up this meeting to a “T”. Most people went home having enjoyed some excellent sport but the Arctic conditions on Sat-urday morning and the incessant rain which pre-vailed throughout Sunday practice could so easily have ruined the weekend completely as a contest. Fortunately the surface at Kames dries quickly and by lunchtime both days, spirits began to improve. Pity we have to begin the
season so early, though.
Aberdonian Les Mutch opened his 2015 account with a convincing double in these first two rounds of the Guyson Scottish Sprint Championship in his 1600cc GWR Raptor. He won outright on Satur-day from Russell Macfarlane of Currie in that remarkable one litre Nemesis with third place

going to young Louise Anne Calder from Thurso who pushed her dad Colin into fourth place overall in their shared 1,000cc Jedi racing car. No mere feat this as he happens to be the reigning British Sprint Champion, having a break from his National campaign with his 3.5 litre Gould
V8.
The blizzard conditions on Saturday fore-noon made for a treacherous practice, but only Ronnie MacGregor came a cropper, his Honda S2000 sports car ending in the gravel trap, without serious damage to the car. The rain made way at lunchtime for drier conditions but there was still a biting wind which added to the problems of com-
petitors in some of the lighter cars.
Sunday morning was even worse, but this time it was the rain, heavy and incessant right up to the lunchbreak making mar-shalling a miserable experience for those hardy volunteers. But once again, the clouds cleared and the track was mainly dry for the remainder of the meeting – there was even a hint of warm sunshine, drawing a light veil over the ordeals of
what had gone before.
As on the opening day Les Mutch proved a popular and convincing winner and Colin Calder took second spot from
Louise. Perth driver Graham Clark was
fourth in his Radical sports-racing car.
The Stratford bard was not the only ancient celebrity in attendance, I thought I saw An-tonio Vivaldi on that opening day writing
The Four Seasons.

It is always good to get the first event of the season out of the way particularly as these early competitions can throw up all sorts of unforeseen problems for competitors and organisers alike.
Unlike East Ayrshire the previ-ous weekend, Lothian Car Club found favour with the weather gods, but thereafter their luck ran out.
The popular Doune hillclimbs always attract huge entries and with no return road, the sched-ules can be tight even in normal circumstances. But over the winter a long stretch of wooden safety barrier had been erected from Junction to the top of East Brae and this seems to have caught out the odd competitor. As a result of this and the usual incidents elsewhere on the hill the programme was set back to such a degree that drivers got only one competition run each day.
That aside, the Championship got off the ground with results not straying too far from expec-tations, Les Mutch taking his GWR Raptor to a total of four FTDs in eight days and Jona-than Rarity coming second both days. Steve Marr was third on Saturday but lost out next day to a flier from John Mackenzie.
