THE PLAY “It’s not your typical love story: Doug and Kayleen meet at the nurse’s office in their elementaryschool; she’s got a painful stomach ache, and he’s all banged up from a running dive off the roof ofthe schoo l. Over the next thirty years, these scar-crossed lovers meet again and again, broughttogether by injury, heartbreak, and their own self-destructive tendencies. With great compassion andhumor, playwright Rajiv Joseph crafts a compelling and unconventional love story about the intimacybetween two people when they allow their defenses to drop and their wounds to show.”
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONSKAYLEEN (female, 28) independent woman, a protector- sometimes expressed through kindness,
sometimes through force, blunt, headstrong, has a “no fucks” side, life smart, “damaged” anddepressed- has been since childhood, scared of commitment but also sacred of being alone, motherleft when she was a child, father was verbally abusive and died when she was 23, deals with heranxiety and depression through alcohol, cigarettes, doctors, and a cocktail of prescribed medication- a
constant search to “get healthy,” emotions can turn on dime, has a shell around her, friends withDoug since they were 8, has unexpressed and possibly unrealized romantic feelings towards him, buteither way cares about him deeply (despite spending years apart at a time), Doug knows the mostvulnerable side to her which creates an indisputable and special bond between them
DOUG (male, 28) tough exterior, muscular, scraped up, likes showing off, adventuresome daredevil,known for his accidents and near death experiences, is currently in a coma after being hit by lighting
when standing on his roof during a thunder storm- may not wake up, a jokester, optimistic outlookbut has insecurities about himself and his relationships with others, loves Kayleen but scared to showit, would do anything for her, superstitious, went to college, had loving parents growing up as isexhibited by his kind heart, non speaking

Casting for a Non-Union production of ANIMAL STORY, a new children’s musical about a group ofanimals at the zoo.
Seeking acto rs in their 20s who sing for various animal (and a few human) characters. Some minor
doubling. Diversity strongly encouraged.Tech rehearsal Sunday 3/13, 10am-noon
Performances 3 consecutive Sundays: 3/13 at 12:30pm; 3/20 at 11:15am; 3/27 at 11:30am. Running
time approx. 40 minutes. Venue: Jewel Box Theatre, 312 W. 36th St. Part of Midtown InternationalTheatre Festival.
Rehearsals are mostly late afternoon (after 3)/evening, starting Monday, Feb. 29. Please submit onlyif these basic times will work for you.
