回收飲料罐的藝術比賽為了讓大家注意到回收工作的無限運用可能性, 城市藝術

和文化活動委員會將要舉辦一個以回收飲料罐為主題的藝術競賽。參賽的藝術品可以是任何一種媒介---從雕塑作品到海報設計---只要是在作品中利用回收的飲料罐, 或者促進飲料罐回收, 都符合規定。這個比賽開放給所有的人, 從幼稚園的小朋友到成年人都可以參加。藝術作品的評審也將按照年齡分組評分。團體合作的作品也可以參與比賽, 不過所有的組員必須在相同的年齡類別內。所有的提交作品都必須是原創的。並且所有的作品都必須是適合全家觀賞的。

Concurso de Arte para Envases Reciclables de BebidasPara llamar la atención sobre las posibilidades

ilimitadas de reciclaje, el Comité de Arte y Cultura de la Ciudad organiza un concurso de arte sobre el tema del reciclaje de envases de bebidas. Las obras de arte pueden ser de cualquier tipo — desde esculturas hasta carteles — siempre y cuando se usen recipientes de bebidas recicladas en el trabajo o se promueva el reciclaje de recipientes para bebidas. El concurso está abierto para todos, desde chicos de Kindergarten hasta adultos y las obras de arte serán juzgados por categoría de edad. Los proyectos de grupo están permitidos, pero todos los miembros del grupo deben estar dentro de la misma categoría de edad. Todas las presentaciones deben ser originales. Todo el contenido debe ser sano para todas edades.

Recycled Beverage Container Art Contest

To draw attention to the limitless possibilities of recycling, the City Arts and Cultural Event Committee is hosting an art contest around the theme of recycling beverage containers. The artwork can be in any medium — from sculptures to posters — as long as it either uses recycled beverage containers in the work or promotes beverage container recycling.

The contest is open to Kindergartners through adults, and artwork will be judged by age category. Group projects are allowed but all members of the group must be within the same age category. All submissions must be original. All content should be family friendly.

An Intent to Submit an Entry Form must be returned by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017. Artists whose works are approved for display will be invited to display their work for final judging at the 2017 Eco Fair on Sunday, April 30. Good food doesn’t belong in the trash, but sadly it often ends up there. We’ve all heard the saying, “One bad apple spoils the bunch.” Did you know that could be true with recycling, too? All of your recycling goes together into your blue All-in-One Recycling container. Your recycling container and all of your neighbors’ containers are emptied into a truck that compacts the recyclables. At the Materials Recovery Facility, that load is dumped and mixed with loads from many other neighborhoods. So imagine what happens when you or someone else has tossed in a nearly full can of soda or a half-empty ketchup bottle. You can see it, can’t you? Soda or ketchup gets

squeezed out and spills onto paper, cardboard, and other containers. Instead of being recycled, some of those items are now too contaminated to be reused by a manufacturer. And then? Well, they end up in the landfill instead of being made into a new product.

But here’s the thing — contamina-tion is a problem that we can quickly and easily solve. By taking three simple steps before you toss items into your recycling container, you can help keep everyone’s recycling clean. When you do this, you help ensure that your recyclables will become new products,

Recycle those paper shredsIt’s tax season, and a lot of people are shredding

old statements, receipts, and other documents. If you have paper shreds, you can recycle them in your blue All-in-One Recycling container. However, please follow these instructions:

1. Place paper shreds into a brown PAPER bag. (NO plastic bags!)

2. Fill the bag about two-thirds full and then roll the top closed.

3. Staple the top of the bag.4. Put the bag into your recycling container.

Holiday Collection ScheduleThere will be no trash and recycling collection services on these holidays:

• Memorial Day – Monday, May 29• Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4

If your weekly pickup is on or after the holiday, your pickup that week will be delayed by one day.

Have you been busy with your spring cleaning? Maybe you found an old computer tucked into the back of a closet. Or perhaps you realized that the cat had ruined a rug or the guest room mattress was worn out. Bulky items, such as furniture, appliances, and old rugs, don’t fit into your green waste container, and electronics don’t belong there. Republic Services will pick up bulky items and electronics at the curb, but you must call to request this service so that the correct truck can be sent out on the day.

If you live in a single-family home, you may set out up to four bulky items per week at no additional cost. Bulky items are picked up on the same day as waste and recycling. To receive this service, you must call Republic Services at 888-742-5234 at least 24 hours before your regular collection day to request a bulky-item pickup.

Republic Services will also pick up electronics, such as old TVs and computers, at no charge. No matter where you live in the city or what

your normal collection day is, electronics are only picked up on Wednesdays. If you have electronics for pickup, please call Republic Services at 888-742-5234 at least 24 hours prior to the Wednesday collection to request a pickup.

If you live in a multi-family complex, check with your property manager to find out how to dispose of bulky items.

Remember that household hazardous waste is NOT picked up at the curb. If you have unneeded household chemicals, such as tub and tile cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, paints, stain, paint thinner, used motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticides, and similar hazardous products, you may dispose of them for FREE at the Los Angeles County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection events, which are held weekly at various locations around the county, or at one of the permanent collection facilities. For locations and other details, visit CleanLA.com or call 888-CLEAN-LA.

Republic Services también recogerá aparatos electrónicos, tales como televisiones viejas y computadoras sin costo adicional. No importa donde viva usted en la ciudad o cual sea el día que le recogen la basura, los aparatos electrónicos se recogen solo los miércoles. Si tiene aparatos electrónicos que desechar, por favor llame a Republic Services al 888-742-5234 con por lo menos 24 horas de anticipación al miércoles en que desea recibir el servicio.

Si vive en un edificio de multi-familiares, por favor pregunte al administrador del edificio sobre como puede desechar sus artículos grandes.

Recuerde que la basura tóxica del hogar NO se recoge de los domicilios. Si tiene químicos del hogar que ya no necesite, tales como, limpiadores de tina, azulejo y del inodoro, pinturas, removedor de manchas, aguarrás, aceite usado del motor, anticongelantes, químicos para la alberca, pesticidas y productos nocivos similares, es que pueda desecharlos GRATIS en los eventos de colecta para basura tóxica del hogar (HHW) del Condado Los Angeles, que se llevan a cabo semanalmente en varios sitios alrededor del condado, o llevarlos a uno de los centros de colecta permanentes. Colecta de Basura Durante los Días FestivosNo habrá colecta de basura o reciclables durante estos días festivos:

• Día de la Remembranza – Lunes 29 de mayo• Día de la Independencia – Martes 4 de julio

Si el día de su servicio cae en o después del día festivo, su colecta esa semana se pospondrá por un día.
