Áprilisban három komoly változás történt velünk, nemcsak a tár-saság mindennapjaiban, hanem utasainknak nyújtott szolgáltatásainkat tekintve is. Tagjává váltunk a oneworld szövetségnek Közép- és Kelet-Európa egyetlen képvise-lőjeként, az eredményes privatizáció révén új, tőkeerős tulajdonossal, valamint forgalomba állt légitársaságunk történetének legnagyobb férőhelyű repülőgépe is.Alig egy hónapja csatlakoztunk a világ vezető légiszövetsé-géhez, és most büszkén számolunk be arról, hogy az átál-lás zökkenőmentes és sikeres volt. A oneworld hatalmas rendszere, a tag-légitársaságok összekapcsolt informatikai hálózata működik, a több mint kétszázezer alkalmazott teszi a dolgát, hisszük, az Ön megelégedésére is.A oneworld tagjaként nagyobb választási lehetőséget, ha lehet, még magasabb minőségű szolgáltatást és a koráb-binál lényegesen több kedvezményt tudunk nyújtani. The airline and our customers were recently pre-sented with some unique possibilities. In April we experienced three great changes both in the everyday life of the airline and in the services provided for our customers. We have become a member of the one-world alliance as the only representative from Central and Eastern Europe, we have a new capital-intensive owner due to a successful privatisation process, and we now have a new aircraft in service, which has the highest number of seats in the history of our airline.It was only a month ago that we joined the leading air alliance of the world, and now we are proud to say that the changeover process was smooth and successful. The huge oneworld system, the linked IT network between the member airlines operates well, more than two hundred thousand employees perform their tasks, and we trust that this is to your satisfaction too.As a member of oneworld we are able to provide a greater choice, higher quality services, if this is possible at all, and significantly more benefits than before. Our customers may now collect and use frequent flyers’ points on the network of routes covering most of the world, and the frequent flyers

belonging to the Malév Duna Club have access to 400 airport lounges offered by the member airlines of the alliance all over the world.Even during the months spent preparing for member-ship we experienced that oneworld and its member airlines are leading and dominant participants in the air transport industry, and their high quality services are recognised and appreciated by millions of passengers all over the world. Now, with our flights to more than fifty cities we are also able to contribute to the wide range of oneworld extending to 700 destinations in 150 countries of the world. Now there is only one single white patch left on the map of the alliance, and it is Russia. Through the new owner of Malév it will now be possible to link this vast country too into the network of the alliance. As the first step, at the end of April our airline started scheduled flights four times a week between Budapest and the capital city of the Urals, Ekaterinburg.Malév will continue to provide its customers with high quality services as expected by oneworld, so that an increasing number of people choose Malév both in and outside of Hungary, in the west and in the east.

sÁndorfI IstvÁn-életmű-kIÁllÍtÁsa franciaországban és az amerikai egyesült Államokban a legnépszerűbb kortárs festőművészek közé tartozó sándorfi István közel 70 alkotását mutatja be debrecenben a modem. ez az első alkalom, amikor magyarországon a világhírű alkotó egész eddigi életművét kiállítják. különleges az is, hogy nem-csak magyar, de amerikai, francia és olasz magángyűjtemények is kölcsönadták a nagyközönség számára nem hozzáférhető, féltve őrzött képeiket.(Debrecen, MODEM – Modern és Kortárs Művészeti Központ, június 3-ig)

desIgn and arcHItectUreBorn in the south Hungarian town of pécs, Breuer marcell, or as he is known worldwide marcel Breuer, was one of the most influential modernist architects and furniture designers of the last century. His personality and oeuvre is known differently in europe from overseas. In Hungary he is primarily regarded as a designer, in america as a teacher and architect. this large-scale exhibition is the first which jointly displays his designs together with models of his prominent buildings.(Ludwig Museum – Contemporary Art Museum, 4 May – 8 July)

IstvÁn sÁndorfI retrospectIvenearly 70 works by István sándorfi, one of the most popular contemporary artists in france and the Usa, are being exhibited in modem, debrecen. this is the first occasion that the internationally famous artist’s entire oeuvre can be seen in Hungary. It is also exceptional that not only Hungarian but american, french and Italian private collectors have agreed to lend their precious paintings, which otherwise are inaccessible to the public.(MODEM – Modern and Contemporary Art Centre, until 3 June)

marcUs mIller lIvenot many know that one of the greatest bass guitar stars of black american music, marcus miller, the enfant terrible of Brooklyn, originally played the clarinet then the saxophone and only took to the bass guitar later, having included a detour with the Hammond organ in between. miller is highly respected in jazz and funk circles. He played a significant role in the last years of miles davis as well as in the career of david sanborn, and he has also had a strong influence on the rap and hip-hop stars of today.(Petőfi Hall, 8 pm, 20 May)

25tH jUBIlee aUctIonthe virág judit gallery is holding its 25th auction in the patria Hall of the Budapest congress centre at 6 pm on friday 18 may. a star piece of the jubilee auction is the work Dancer by demetre chiparus, one of art deco’s most characteristic sculptors. this is a special item in his oeuvre, regarding both its material and composition. the other attraction is really unique – the impressionist armand guillaumin’s Damiette, painted in 1886, which is a companion painting to the world famous damiette landscapes found in large museums. 8. kortÁrs művészetI fesztIvÁla fesztivál résztvevői a kortárs művészet iránt elkötelezett, zöm-mel fehérvári alkotók, akik az általuk javasolt, nemzetközileg is elismert vendégművészekkel együtt nyírják fűbe ’land art’ kom-pozíciójukat, állítják ki művészzászlajukat vagy adnak koncertet. a rendezvény elsősorban a művészeti ágak határterületein meg-jelenő műfajokra fókuszál, mint például hangköltészet, szoborze-ne, mozgásszínház és művészkönyv.(Székesfehérvár, május 3–20., kísérőfesztiválok: 3. pécsI orszÁgosszÍnHÁzI talÁlkozÓaz idén hetedik alkalommal megrendezett színházi fesz-tivál versenyprogramját kivételesen egy filmrendező, dömölky jános válogatta összesen 123 hazai és határon túli darabból. a programba a nagy klasszikusok (Büchner, shakespeare, goldoni) darabjai mellett mai szerzők elő-adásainak is sikerült bekerülniük. BUdapestI Wagner-napoka tavalyi elsöprő sikerű parsifal után 2007 és 2008 a nibelungok éve lesz. sHrek 3Itt a várva várt harmadik epizód, melyben shrek trónt örököl, de mivel nem kenyere a felelősség, elindul, hogy felkutas-sa a legközelebbi élő trónörököst. s bár a nyár animációs slágerfilmjét itthon zömmel magyar szinkronnal élvezhetjük majd, érdemes az eredetibe is belehallgatni, hisz a figurák-nak mike myers, eddie murphy, cameron diaz, antonio Banderas, rupert everett, justin timberlake és julie andrews kölcsönzi a hangját.(Bemutató: június 14.)

Wagner daYs In BUdapestafter the sweeping success of parsifal last year, 2007 and 2008 will be the year of the nibelungs. this year the first two chapters of the ring will be performed directed by Hartmut schörghofer and conducted by Ádám fischer. Wagner fans can see and listen to “the rhine gold” on the 7th and “the valkyrie” on the 8th.(Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, Palace of Arts, 7-10 June)

Az 1500-as évek egyházművészeti alkotásaitól kezdve a Tüskevári madonnán, Mányoki Ádámon és Munkácsy Mihályon át egészen a Csontváry-festményekig álmélkodhatunk azon, hogy e remekművek miként menekültek meg az enyészet-től. Nos, most egy-egy kiállítási darab mellett, fotókkal gazdagon dokumentálva kísérhetjük végig az „ilyen volt, ilyen lett” fázisait hosszú, részletes magyaráza-tokkal tarkítva. Lenyűgöző, már-már megkapó az a heroikus küzdelem, amellyel egy szúette, gombamérgezett fadarabból, szétrothadt, málló vászonból évekig tartó, sziszifuszi munkával újra táblaképet, gótikus szent szobrot, patinás fest-ményt varázsolnak a hozzáértő, gondos kezek. Nemcsak komoly elméleti tudás, de végtelen türelem, tehetség, elhivatottság és lelemény is kell mindehhez. Ki hitte volna például, hogy a számtalan szakmai furfang mellett az olyan hétköznapi tár-gyak is jó szolgálatot tesznek, mint egy egyszerű cigarettapapír?A Budavári Palota C épületében bemutatott kiállítás, azon túl, hogy végigkalau-zol a műkincsek újjászületésének egyes fázisain, megismertet a helyreállításkor használt vásznakkal, fafajtákkal, festékekkel és aranyozási kellékekkel, valamint beavat a képkeret-restaurálás, a szobormásolat-készítés és a konzerválás apró, de annál hasznosabb fortélyaiba is. A több mint 100 műalkotás ekképpen nem kro-nológiai rendben sorakozik fel, hanem a hordozóanyagok és a beavatkozási mód szerinti tematikus csoportokban. Különlegességnek számít a Magyar Nemzeti Galéria legnagyobb méretű műtárgyának, a kisszebeni Keresztelő Szent János-főoltárnak kész, félig kész és a csupán konzervált részeinek bemutatása.

It is amazing how all these masterpieces have escaped annihilation, from religious art of the sixteenth century to the Madonna of Tüskevár, to Ádám Mányoki and Mihály Munkácsi, all the way to Csontváry's paintings. Now you can follow the well-documented restoration procedure through a series of annotated photographs and compare the "before and after" conditions of the exhibited artwork. You can witness the heroic, endless battle with a mouldy piece of wood eaten by woodworm, the battle with a rotten, crumbling piece of canvas. And you will be moved as you see how expertise turns all these into a gothic sculpture of a saint, into a panel, or into centuries-old paintings. This work requires that the restorer not merely have pro-found theoretical knowledge, but also requires painstaking work, lots of talent, enthusiasm and inventive-ness. Would you have ever imagined that apart from all professional tricks of restoration, simple everyday objects, for example, a piece of cigarette paper could be useful? The exhibition in Building C of the Royal Palace in Budapest guides the visitor through all phases of the rebirth of art treasures, displaying all kinds of wood, canvas, paint, and even gilding accessories. You are initiated into the small but useful secrets of restoring picture frames, of reproducing sculptures, of conserving artwork. Thus the exhibited objects are arranged according to method of restoration, and by the materials used for their restoration, rather than chronologically. The centre point of the exhibition is the Saint John the Baptist altar, which is the largest exhibit of the Hungarian National Gallery. Restored, not yet fully restored, and purely conserved segments of the altar can be seen next to each other.

A magyar srác kalandos élet-útja során eljutott New York-ba, ahol régiségkereskedést nyitott, lakberendezéssel is foglalkozott. Mígnem 1978 nyarán betoppant hozzá John Lennon és Yoko Ono. Először nem is hitte, hogy ők azok. Pe-dig ők voltak: kinéztek a kira-katban két egyiptomi széket, azonnal lecsaptak rájuk, jó sok dollárt hagytak ott. (Havadtoy azt szokta mondani, az árban

ő is benne van.) Attól kezdve egyre többet időzött fiatalkori bálványaival, akik három há-zuk berendezését is rábízták, s a munkakapcsolat egyszer csak átalakult barátsággá.Lennon meglátott egy XIX. századi, indiai elefántcsontból faragott sakktáblát Sam bolt-jában. Feleségét akarta meg-lepni. Mindjárt elő is állt egy különleges kéréssel: a vörösre pácolt bábukat ki kell fehérí-

teni, hogy hófehér legyen a készlet. Havadtoy teljesítette a kérést. Aztán a következőt is. A tábla aljára ezt kellett volna bevésnie: „From the kids to the queen” (A gyerekektől a királynőnek), ő viszont félreértett egy szót, és ez lett belőle: „From the king to the queen” (A királytól a ki-rálynőnek). Ennek is értelme volt persze, de John Lennon bepörgött a baki miatt.Yoko és Lennon soha nem sakko-zott. Yoko és Sam viszont igen.Merthogy a Beatles-legenda 1980. december 8-i tragikus halála után néhány hónappal az özvegy és a bel-sőépítész-üzletember barátságából szerelem lett. Mindketten megle-pődtek érzéseiken, aztán húsz évig együtt éltek, ám hivatalosan nem házasodtak össze. Yoko egy napon csomagot kapott a chicagói születé-sű Bobby Fischer sakkvilágbajnok-tól, aki egy míves sakktáblát küldött ajándékba, saját maga készítette bőr-ből. Mintha rímelt volna arra a bizo-nyos antik faragott készletre, melyet az asszony féltve őrzött, s amellyel nem múlt el nap, hogy Yoko és Sam ne játszott volna egy-két partit.Többször jöttek Magyarországra in-kognitóban. A rendszerváltás előtti időkben a titkosszolgálat figyelte őket, lehallgatóberendezést, „polos-kát” rejtettek szállodai szobájukba. Budapest belvárosában kortárs ga-lériát nyitottak, sajnos, néhány éve bezárták. Havadtoy Szentendrén házat épített, teraszáról csodás kilá-tás nyílik a Dunára, tágas műtermé-ben pedig igazán nem kell várnia az ihletre. Időnként Londonba repül, mivel ott is van lakása, s ha hiányoz-nak neki a New York-i barátai, gon-dol egyet és felkeresi őket. Hét éve szakított végleg Yokóval, azért köl-tözött Európába, hogy ne zavarják egymás köreit.De nem tud szabadulni tőle.Legújabb művein felsejlik a régi sakkélmény. És Bobby Fischer is újra képbe került. A szovjet Szpaszkijjal folytatott legendás meccsének 41 lépését örökítette meg a játszma ösz-szes lépését. Sam megmutatja ma-gát a világ kiállítótermeiben.John és Yoko nélkül sakkozik.

A young Hungarian man, open to the world, getting all the way to New York in a life full of adventure, there he opened an antiques business and began dealing with interior design. His days passed unremarkably and bu-siness started to pick up, and one day in the summer of 1978 John Lennon and Yoko Ono walked into his store. At first he couldn’t believe it was them. But it was: they chose two Egyptian chairs from the display, buying them immediately leaving a tidy sum in the store. Havadtoy usually says that he was included in the price. And it is not by accident that he says this, as from this point on he spent an increasing amount of time with the idols of his youth. They commissioned him with creating three houses, continuously consulting, making purchases together. And their working relationship eventually turned into a friendship.On one occasion Lennon noticed a 19th century carved Indian ivory chess set in Sam’s store. He wanted it for his wife.

Immediately he had a special request: he wanted to have the red-stained pieces bleached so that the whole set was completely white. Havadtoy complied with the request. And with the next one as well. On the base of the chessboard he should have carved:

“From the kids to the queen”, he, however, misunderstood and the inscription ended up as:

“From the king to the queen”. Of course, this also made sense, but John Lennon was annoyed at the mistake.Yoko and John never played chess. Yoko and Sam, however, did.Because a few months after the tragic death of the Beat-les-legend on 8 December 1980, the friendship between the widow and the interior designer-businessman turned into a love affair. Both of them were surprised by their feelings going on to live together for twenty years, although never officially marrying. One day Yoko received a gift from the Chicago-born chess champion Bobby Fischer, a little chess set that he himself had made from leather. It was as if it rhymed with that certain carved set that Yoko treasured so much, and never a day passed without Yoko and Sam playing a match or two on it.They visited Hungary incognito several times. In the times before the change of political regime they were watched by the secret service, their hotel room was bugged. They opened

a contemporary gallery in the heart of Budapest, which, unfortunately, they closed a few years ago. Yoko even performed a concert and Havadtoy built a house in Szentendre, he has a wonderful view of the Danube from the terrace, and in his spacious studio he doesn’t have to wait too long for inspiration. Occasionally he travels to Lon-don as he has a home there too, and if he misses his friends in New York, he just sets off and looks them up. Yoko and Sam were separated, for good, seven years ago with Sam moving to Europe so they would not disturb each other’s worlds.But he cannot be rid of her.His old experiences with chess can be felt in his latest works. And Bobby Fischer is back in the picture. He has placed the 41 moves of Fischer’s legendary match with the Soviet Spassky each in an individual picture. This was a sensation in the Cold War Soviet Union of 1972: an American beating a Soviet. And now the pictures of a Hungarian-American artist, soaked in light-coloured paints, recreate all the moves of the match. Pontosan 100 éve: 1907 május 12-én született Szingapúrban. Benne tisztelhetjük a világirodalom egyik legelső szuperügynökének/testőrének/detektívjének, Simon Templarnak a szülőatyját. Félig angol, félig kínai származású, aki leginkább bűnügyi, rejtélyes regényeket és forgatókönyveket írt. Világhírűvé a Simon Templar, alias „Az angyal” kalandjairól írt könyveivel vált. Apja kínai orvos volt, aki azt állította, hogy család-fáját a több mint háromezer éves Shang dinasztiáig tudja visszave-zetni. Gyerekkorától kezdve érdek-lődött az írás iránt, már kamasz-ként magazint szerkesztett.Amikor első könyvét kiadták, ott-hagyta a Cambridge egyetemet, és új karrierbe kezdett. Az volt a vágya, hogy gazdagon éljen

abból, amit igazán szeret csinál-ni. Angol thriller-regényeket írt, miközben sok másfajta munkát is elvállalt, mint például: csapos, halász, gyöngyhalász, aranyásó, bányász, buszsofőr is volt. Az 1930-as években Amerikába költözött, ahol feleségül vette Audrey Long Hollywood-i színésznőt. He was born precisely 100 years ago in Singapore, on 12 May 1907. He was the creator of Simon Templar, one of the very first super secret agents / detec-tives in world literature. He was of half British and half Chinese descent and mostly wrote crime and mystery novels and scripts becoming world famous for his books about the adventures of Simon Templar alias “The Saint”. His father was a Chinese doc-tor, who claimed that he could trace back his family tree three thousand years into the past to the Shang dynasty. Already as a child he took an interest in writ-ing, and as a teenager he even edited a magazine.After his first book was published he left Cambridge University and started a new career. His plan was to become rich doing what he really liked doing. He wrote English thrillers, while doing many other types of work as well, for example, he worked as a barman, pearl diver, gold miner, miner and bus driver. In the 1930’s he moved to America, where he married Hollywood actress Audrey Long. He wrote a great number of scripts, espe-cially detective stories, which were then filmed by Paramount Pictures. The series entitled

“The Saint” starring Roger Moore became the most famous. Between 1962-69 it was shown in nearly every country of the world, and in those days it was the longest-running televi-sion series of all time, with 118 episodes. The figure of Simon Templar with the ring of glory above his head was classed in

the category of mystery and fan-tasy stories and made hundreds of millions of people sit down in front of their television sets. The designer of the clothes worn by Roger Moore, the manufacturer of the car which he drove and the places he travelled to could be sure about their future: they all became world famous. And so did the writer, who after achiev-ing everything in his profession died on 15 April 1993.

Nem biztos, hogy mindenki tudja, hogy a zajtalan és robbanásmen-tes gyufát az emberiség a most 190 éve, 1817. május 17-én szüle-tett Irinyi Jánosnak köszönheti. Az erdélyi Nagylétán cseperedett, Nagyváradon végezte középiskolá-it, jogot a Debreceni Kollégiumban tanult. A bécsi Politechnikumban kémiai tanulmányokat folytatott. Tanárának, Meissnernek egy siker-telen kísérlete után jutott arra az ötletre, hogy a kálium-klorátot ólom-dioxiddal helyettesíti a foszfo-ros gyújtó fejében: így találta fel a

„zajongásmentes” biztonsági gyufát. Találmányát, nem kevés pénzért el- adta Rómer István gyufagyárosnak, a pénzből Németországban elvé-gezte a hohenheimi Mezőgazdasági Főiskolát. Irinyi János részt vett a reformkor iparfejlesztési mozgal-mában. 1840-ben gyufagyárat ala-pított Pesten, amely 1848-ig műkö-dött. Az 1848-as magyar forrada-lomban Irinyi testvérével, Józseffel együtt segített a forradalom legfon-tosabb követeléseit tartalmazó 12 pont megszövegezésében. Kossuth Lajos megbízásából a nagyváradi lőpor- és ágyúgyárban dolgozott.

A szabadságharc után bebörtönöz-ték. 1850-ben amnesztiával bocsá-tották szabadon. Családja vértesi birtokán gazdálkodott, de mezőgaz-dasági kísérleteiben minden pénzét elvesztette. 1863–1882 között a debre-ceni István gőzmalomban dolgozott, 1895. december 17-én hunyt el. Bár a gyufa feltalálását tekintjük élete fő művének, de tudományos tevékeny-sége a kémiára és a mezőgazdaság-tanra is hatott. Irinyi volt az első, aki a gipszet talajjavításra ajánlotta.

It is not widely known that noise-free, non-explosive matches were invented by János Irinyi, who was born 190 years ago on 17 May 1817. He was brought up in a Transylvanian village called Nagyléta, attended secondary school in Nagyvárad and was a student of law at the College of Debrecen, Hungary. He stud-ied chemistry at the Vienna Polytechnic. After seeing an unsuccessful experiment per-formed by his tutor, Meissner, he had the idea to replace potassi-um chloride with lead dioxide in the phosphoric heads of matches, and this is how he invented noise-less safety matches. He sold his invention for a remarkable sum to István Rómer, match factory owner, and from the money he received he completed his stud-ies at the College of Agriculture in Hohenheim, Germany. János Irinyi took part in the indus-trialisation movement of the Hungarian age of reforms. In 1840 he established a match fac-tory in Pest, which operated until 1848 and in the revolution of that same year, together with his brother József, he helped word the famous 12 demands asserted during the uprising. By the order of Lajos Kossuth he worked at the gunpowder and cannon fac-tory of Nagyvárad. After the war, he was imprisoned and then was released in 1850 under an amnes-ty. He started managing his family’s estate in Vértes invest-

ing all his money in agricultural experiments and lost everything. Between 1863-1882 he worked in the Debrecen steam mill and died on 17 December 1895. Although the invention of the safety match is regarded as his main life work, his scientific activity also had an influence on chemistry and agri-culture, as it was he who was the first to recommend gypsum for soil improvement.

A szinte felso-rolhatatlanul sok név helyett említ-sük meg Adolph Zukor (Zukor Adolf) a Famous Players, majd a Paramount; William Fox a Fox és Joe Pasternak (Pasternak Jakab), a Universal, majd a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer filmgyár mindenható urai-nak nevét. Fox még a mozi hőskorá-ban került kapcsolatba a filmmel, és jól látta meg az ebben rejlő üzleti lehetőséget. A döntő lépés a forgal-mazás megszervezése, megszerzé-se volt: a filmüzletben is megjelent a nagyipari módszerek alkalmazá-sa, egy kézbe került a gyártás, a for-galmazás és a mozihálózat, amely megteremtette az amerikai film máig is fennálló monopolhelyze-tét. Soha nem felejtette el, honnan indult. Talán élete mottója lehe-tett az 1927-ben készült, A hetedik mennyország című film nyitómon-data: „Azoknak, akik elindultak a mélységből a magasba, a csa-tornából a csillagok felé, a bátor-ság létráját kell megmászniuk”.

William Fox, one of the greatest American filmmakers, founder of the Fox Studio died fifty-five years ago, on 8 May 1952. He was born on 1 January 1879 in Tolcsva, Hungary with the name Vilmos Friedmann according to some sources or Vilmos Fuchs according to others. When he was 9 months old his family emigrated to the USA, where he took on his “American” name. When he was only 8 he had sev-eral jobs, he founded his first company at the age of 21, and at the age of 36 he established the Fox Film Corporation. Many people say that Hollywood, in those days, had been built by the Hungarians. Instead of trying to make a list of the great number of names let us just mention those of the powerful film stu-dio owners such as Adolph Zukor (Zukor Adolf) – Famous Players and then Paramount; William Fox – Fox and Joe Pasternak (Pasternak Jakab) – Universal and then Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Fox started in the film business in its golden age and immedi-ately realised the business pos-sibilities of filmmaking. The decisive step was to organise and obtain distribution: the meth-ods used in large-scale industry also appeared in the film busi-ness, with production, distribu-tion and the network of movie theatres being in one hand, and this is how the monopoly of the American film industry was cre-ated and still exists today. He never forgot where he came from. The motto of his life may have been the first sentence of his film

“Seventh Heaven” produced in 1927: "those who set off from the depths to the heights, from the gutter towards the stars, have had to climb the ladder of courage". In the legendary years of the dream factory it was definitely regard-ed as a plus, if someone came from Hungary, although at the entrance to Paramount Pictures there was a sign saying: “Here it is not enough to be Hungarian, you also need to be talented!”

Hetven éve: 1937. május 23-án hunyt el a vagyon szó egyik szinonimája-ként is ismert név tulajdonosa, a pet-róleumkirály, a Rockefeller-dinasz-tia megalapítója, John Davidson. Apja lókupec és vándorgyógysze-rész volt, aki az 1840-es évek máso-dik felében New York állam falva-iban lovakat, valamint olvasztott kristálycukorból és gyógynövények keverékéből készült csodagyógy-szert kínálgatott. Hét gyermeke közül az első 1839-ben született. Már 8 éves korában kacsákat és pulyká-kat tenyésztett, amit nagy profittal adott el. Kereskedelmi iskolát vég-zett, és még csak 16 éves, amikor segédkönyvelő lett Cleveland váro-sában, 19 éves, amikor önállósította magát. Bizományosi üzletet nyitott 1000 dollár tőkével. A pénzt apjától kapta kölcsön – akkoriban horribi-lisan magasnak számító, évi 10%-os kamatra! Alig egy évvel később súlyos gyomorbaj tört ki rajta. Több mint két évig csak kétszersültet és aludttejet ehetett. Az orvosok korai halálát jósolták. Haja és sze-möldöke kihullott, arca ráncos lett. Húszévesen éppen olyan ráncos volt, mint élete utolsó évében, ami-kor éppen 37. háziorvosát temette… 25 évesen megalapította a Standard Oil Company-t. Cége saját vasúti-tar-tálykocsi-parkkal és szállítóhajókkal rendelkezett. Az elsők között ismer-te fel a motorbenzin jövőjét, s 1863-ban olajfinomító vállalatot létesí-tett, majd 1870-ben megszervezte a világ első nagy kőolajipari monopó-

liumát, a Standard oil Company of Ohio-t. Ő hozta létre az első modern trösztöt. Kezében tartotta az egész amerikai olajipart, nála összpon-tosult az olajszállítás 90 százaléka. Létrehozta a világ egyik leghatal-masabb vagyonát, megalapozta a család hírnevét, s jelentékeny befo-lyással lett a politikára is. Életében több (üzleti) háborút vívott, mint egy hadsereg, eszközökben nem válogatva törte le ellenfeleit. Sok legenda kering Rockefellernek a leg-apróbb részletekre kiterjed figyelmé-ről, például hogy a munkanap befe-jezésekor végigjárta székházát, és eloltotta az égve hagyott lámpákat. Mérhetetlen gazdagsága ellenére sze-rényen élt, gyermekeit is így nevelte. Megszokott öltönyét a kifényesedé-sig hordta. Hatvanévesen vonult visz-sza, idejét kertészkedésnek, unoká-inak és a bibliaolvasásnak szentelte. Élete folyamán összesen 550 millió dollárt adományozott a tudomány, az oktatás, a művészet és az egész-ségügy támogatására. Ő létesítette például – 1913-ban – a Rockefeller-alapítványt, amelyből sok, később hírnevet szerzett magyar is részese-dett az évek során, s ő alapította 1891-ben a Chicagói Egyetemet. 98 éves korában halt meg.

His father was a horse-dealer and a travelling pharmacist trading horses and wonder drugs made from melted granulated sugar and a mixture of herbs for sale in New York State in the second half of the 1840’s. The first of his seven children was born in 1839. Already at the age of 8 he was raising ducks and turkeys sell-ing them at a significant profit. He attended trade school, and he was only 16 when he became assistant accountant in the city of Cleveland, and at the age of 19 he became independent.

He opened a store with a capital of 1,000 dollars. His father lent him the money with an annual interest rate of 10%, which was extremely high in those days! A year later he developed a seri-ous stomach condition. For more than two years he could only eat dry bread and drink sour milk.

Doctors said he would die early. He lost his hair and eyebrows and his face became wrinkled. At the age of twenty he was just as wrinkled as in the last year of his life, when he buried his 37th private doctor… At the age of 25 he founded the Standard Oil Company. His company had its own railway tanker fleet and tanker ships. He was one of the first to recognise the future of petroleum fuel, and in 1863 he established an oil refining com-pany, and then in 1870 he set up the Standard Oil Company of Ohio, the world’s first large mineral oil industry. He created the first modern trust fund. He held the whole of the American oil industry in his hands, he was responsible for 90 percent of all oil transportation. The for-tune he accumulated was one of the greatest in the world, he founded his family’s worldwide reputation and he also had a significant influence in politics.

In his life he fought more (busi-ness) wars than an army, and he used all means available to beat his enemies. There are many legends about how Rockefeller would pay attention to the small-est details, for example, how at the end of each working day he walked around his headquarters and turned off the lights people had left on. Despite his immeas-urable wealth he lived modestly and taught his children to do so, too. He wore the same comfort-able suit until it became shiny. He retired at the age of sixty and from then on he devoted his life to gardening, to his grandchil-dren and to reading the Bible. In his life he donated a total of 550 million dollars to science, educa-tion, arts and healthcare. In 1913 he established the Rockefeller Fund, which also supported sev-eral Hungarians who became famous later on, and he found-ed the University of Chicago in 1891. He died at the age of 98.

Várna állítólag a macskák városa. Amiben lehet is valami, hiszen az utcákon lépten-nyomon beléjük botlunk. Nem túlságosan szívelik az idegeneket, inkább csak messzi-ről hagyják magukat csodálni, bár egy-egy fényképezésre azért a legtöbbjük kapható.Ha valaki Európa keleti feléből származik, útban Várna felé nem tudja elfojtani azokat az emlékeket, amiket a legendás „bulgáriai nyaralás” címszó idéz fel. Hogyan is lehet-ne elfelejteni azokat a 26 órás vonatutakat, amikor hét utastársunkkal egy kupéban, fejünk felett a veszélyesen billegő bőrön-dökkel, kimerülten, izzadtan, de optimis-tán és tele várakozással zötyögtünk nya-ralni? Hát igen, akkor még vagy húsz évvel voltunk fiatalabbak, és egy teljes napot vé-gigzakatolni inkább tűnt jó bulinak, mint elviselhetetlen nyűgnek. (Bele se gondolok abba, hogy ma vállalkoznék-e erre az útra. Gondolkodás nélkül is tudom a választ.)

Varna is said to be the city of cats. There may be something in it, since in the street we tend to bump into them at every other step. They do not like strangers very much and rather let themselves be admired from afar, although most are inclined to allow a photo or two to be taken. On the way to Varna, someone coming from the eastern part of Europe cannot help reviving – and perhaps suppressing

– memories the legendary words “Bulgarian holiday” recall. How could those 26-hour train journeys be forgotten when, with seven fellow passengers in one compartment and dangerously wobbling suitcases above our heads, the train rattled along and we, exhausted, sweaty but full of optimism and anticipation were going on holiday? Well, yes, then we were twenty years younger and clitter-clattering a whole day seemed more like a good spree than an unbearable nuisance. (I’d rather not even think whether I would undertake that journey today. I know the answer without thinking.) If we have had an experience like that we are most likely to remember it as soon as we arrive in Varna. Then we look around and realise that it is not

Amikor ma, egy kényelmes repülőjárattal megérkezünk Várnába – kicsit mosolygunk a kelet-európai múlton. Aztán körülnézünk, és kiderül, hogy nemcsak a mi teherbíró képes-ségünk mutatja az idő múlását. Az a bizonyos

„bolgár tengerpart” sem ugyanaz, ami akkor – az összes ifjonti lelkesedésünk ellenére is – hagyott némi kívánnivalót maga után. A vál-tozás még azoknak is feltűnik, akik rövidebb várnai történelmet tudhatnak maguk mögött.

„Tavaly, amikor ideérkeztem, hiába kerestem például a kedvenc krémemet, egyszerűen nem volt. Ma, ha végigmegyek a bevásárló ut-cán, azt látom, hogy egyik világmárka a másik után nyitja meg a boltjait” – meséli Susanne Meinhard, az impozáns Kempinski Hotel igazgatója. – Szeretek itt élni: csodálatos a ter-mészet, hétvégenként a kutyámmal szoktam sétálni a közeli nemzeti parkban, és még egy év után is rácsodálkozom, milyen szép. Izgal-mas az éjszakai élet, ragyogó előadások van-nak az Operában és mindez nagyon kedvező áron. Az emberek pedig egyenesek, őszinték; könnyű megtalálni velük a hangot.”Márpedig az igazgató asszony tapasztalatára bizton lehet számítani: Várna előtt egyebek mellett Párizs, Dubai, Bangkok, Dublin és még számos világváros szállodáiban dolgozott…Az a Bulgária tehát, amelyre még egyetemista korunkból emlékszünk, már nem az a Bulgá-ria, amit most kapunk. Az emberszagú kupé-ban összezsúfolódott alvók Bulgáriája helyett megtalálhatjuk azt az Aranyhomokot, ami nem különbözik Európa egyetlen más felka-pott tengerpartjától. Várna jó néhány megle-petést tartogat azoknak, akik már hosszú év-tizedek óta elkerülték, de azoknak is, akiknek eddig még kimaradt az életéből.Természetesen egy tengerparti város legfon-tosabb vonzereje maga a tenger, ez a megun-hatatlan csoda. Az Aranyhomok csak néhány kilométernyire van a központtól, jó pár busz visz ki oda, de az a legegyszerűbb, ha beülünk egy taxiba, vagy a szolgálataikat szívesen fel-ajánló helyi sofőröket választjuk. Negyedóra alatt a város nyüzsgéséből hirtelen ott talál-juk magunkat a hamisítatlan tengerparti miliőben: a szállodák, éttermek, kioszkok és strandcikkárusok világában, ahol a konszo-lidált városi öltözéket felváltják az úszódresz-szek és a strandszoknyák, a napszemüvegek és a szalmakalapok, alattuk a napolajtól csil-logó nyaralókkal.Valamiért az emberek itt is mintha mindig igyekeznének valahová: hónuk alatt a napo-zómatraccal ugyanolyan céltudatosan vonul-nak végig a tengerparton, ahogy a minden-napi életben az aktatáskájukkal teszik. nem aggódunk. Ez itt nem a stressz helye. Ki ne érezte volna már úgy a tengerparton ücsörögve, hogy a gondok, amik előtte annyira nyomasztot-ták, nem is annyira drámaiak? Az Aranyhomok pedig, a maga érintetlenségével különösen jó hely arra, hogy lazítsunk és feltöltődjünk. A változás, ami már a városban is szembeszökő volt, itt a par-ton még látványosabb: egymás mellett nőnek ki a földből az egyre nagyobb és egyre csalogatóbb szál-lodák, apartmanházak. Látható, hogy Várna kellő-képpen felkészül a turistákra, akik évről-évre egyre nagyobb számban érkeznek. A hosszú szállodasor legimpozánsabb darabja, a Kempinski például több mint 700 szobájával a Balkán legnagyobb szállodá-ja. „Legalább egy hetet el tudnék tölteni úgy, hogy közben ki sem mozdulok ebből a hotelből” – mondja a kollégám, és valóban. Egy teljes este elmegy példá-ul azzal, hogy kiülök az erkélyre, alattam az orosz regényekre emlékeztető lépcsősor, amely a fák kö-zött levezet egészen a tengerpartig, és nézem a ten-gert, a naplementét, közben finom bolgár vörösbort kortyolgatok – a borokra még visszatérünk –, és egyáltalán nem gondolok semmire, csak élvezem a helyzetet. A hetedik emelet, ahol lakom, elég maga-san van ahhoz, hogy belátható legyen a csodálatos panoráma, viszont elég közel ahhoz, hogy nyitott ablaknál egész éjszaka hallani lehessen a hullámok morajlását. Vagy ha beteltem a tenger látványával, két vadonatúj étterem is csábít a Kempinskiben: az

„Apple Green” a fusion konyha remekeivel és az Al Dente, ami természetesen olasz, és – ahogy a neve is mutatja – éppen úgy készít el mindent, ahogy azt az olaszok szeretik. Erre egy hamisítatlan olasz sza-kács a garancia. A városban megtapasztalt „nyitás a világra” a Kempinskiben mintha megismétlőd-ne: az igazgató német, a resident manager francia, a főszakács pedig belga. Ide is – akárcsak Várnába

– beköltözött a világ, és kényelmet, figyelmességet hozott azoknak, akik itt nyaralva nyugodtan belefe-ledkezhetnek a pihenésbe.Mielőtt lesétálnánk a tengerpartra, érdemes megáll-ni a wellness-részlegben: némi kis edzés után pihen-tető úszás a friss vizű és majdnem kerek uszodában, majd következzen egy – vagy kettő… – a számtalan masszázs közül: a varázslatos kezek csodákat tesz-nek! Így tényleg könnyű eltölteni egy hetet.

only our ability to cope which shows the passage of time. The “Bulgarian seaside” of our memory, which used to leave some things to be desired, despite all our youthful enthusiasm, is no longer the same. The change will strike even those who have had a more recent personal history of Varna.

“When I arrived last year I was looking for my favourite cream in vain. They simply did not have it. Today, when I walk along the high street I see one famous brand after the other opening their shops,” says Susanne Meinhard, the director of the imposing Kempinski Hotel. “I like living here,” she adds. “The countryside is fantastic. I usually walk my dog in the nearby national park at weekends and even after a year its beauty strikes me as a constant surprise. Night life is exciting. There are excellent performances at the Opera House and all at very reasonable prices. People are straightforward, hon-est, so it is easy to communicate with them.” Her experience can be surely relied on, since before Varna she worked in hotels in Paris, Dubai, Bangkok, Dublin and several other major cities of the world.The Bulgaria we were looking forward to as students is no longer the country which greets us now. Instead of the Bulgaria of sleepers crammed in the perspiration drenched train compartment we can find the Golden Sands, which is just like any other popular European beach. Varna has quite a few surprises for those who have avoided it for some

long decades, and also for those who have given it a miss so far. The most important attraction of a seaside place is of course the sea itself, the miracle which is never boring. The Golden Sands is only a few kilometres from the city centre and there are a number of bus lines running there. Still, the simplest thing is to take a taxi, or even the locals are also pleased to offer their services. Within fifteen minutes of leaving behind the bustle of urban life we suddenly find ourselves in the authentic seaside milieu – in the world of hotels, restaurants, pavilions and beachwear traders, where decent city clothes are changed for swimming costumes and sarongs, sunglasses and straw hats covering holidaymakers shining with suntan lotion.Somehow, even here people always seem to be hurrying somewhere. They stride along the beach with their mats under their arms, displaying the same determination as they do with their briefcases in everyday life. And yet, everything is also somehow different. We don’t worry on the beach. It is no place for stress. Sitting on the beach, who can fail to think that the tiresome troubles of the past were not really so dramatic? The Golden Sands with its untouched nature is a particularly perfect place to chill out and relax. The change, which was also striking in the city, is even more spectacular on the beach, with ever bigger and more attractive hotels and apartment buildings popping up one after the other.

Vannak persze dolgok, amik nem változtak. Sze-rencsére. Ilyen például a tenger illata vagy a puha homok csiklandozó melege. Vagy a borok, ami-ket olyan jól esik elszopogatni az esti naplementé-ben. Bulgária nagyon izgalmas borokat tartogat a kíváncsiak számára – a kedvenceim a vörösek

–; a két kihagyhatatlan a Gamza és a Melnik. A bor-kultúra fontosságát jól jelzi, hogy az egyik legfon-tosabb bolgár ünnep, a Trifon zarezan is a sző-lőtőkék tavaszi metszéséhez kötődik. A tőkéket ilyenkor borral permetezik, hogy bő termésük legyen. A szintén változatlan csáberőt a közmondásosan hosszú, akár 3-4 órás bolgár vacsorák jelentik, amit szőlőpálinkával és zöldségsalátával illik indítani

– például a klasszikus sopszkával –, utána pedig jöhet minden, mi szem-szájnak ingere. Személy szerint én a grillételekre esküszöm, itt, a tengerparton kifeje-zetten a grillezett halakra. Érdemes rákérdezni, hogy melyik hal friss és melyik a fagyasztott – minden ét-teremben nagyon tisztességesen megmondják. Sőt olyan helyen is voltunk, ahol a mismásolás helyett egy másik étterembe irányítottak, ahol a legjobbat kapjuk az ilyesmiből – utólag is köszönet és elisme-rés –, így jutottunk el Cook kapitány éttermébe. Ahol

először is rámutathatunk a kiválasztott halra, majd végignézhetjük, ahogy a szakács impozáns gyakor-lattal és ördögi ügyességgel elkészíti számunkra. (Sose gondoltam, hogy a halat ilyen gyorsan ilyen omlósra lehet sütni.)Aztán másnap reggel irány újra az Aranyhomok. Visz-sza az ismerős érzéshez, ahogy séta közben a homokba süpped a lábunk – kicsit nehéz lesz tőle a lépés. Herseg a homok a talpunk alatt, csodáljuk a kagylókat és lép-ten-nyomon megállunk, hogy még pont azt az egyet felszedhessük: a gyerek nagyon fog örülni neki. Fehér vagy kicsit szürkés kagylók, mindegyik a természet egy-egy remekműve a maga tökéletességében, és ha néha el is törik egy-egy a papucsos lábunk alatt, sebaj, van még körülöttünk ezer. Herseg a homok, közben surrog a tenger megunhatatlan egyhangúsággal, és a megnyugtató csobogás szépen, lassan kisimítja az összeborzolt idegeinket. Elszántan süt a nap és ettől szinte érezzük, ahogy visszaköltözik belénk az erő. Valamit mégiscsak tudtak azok az ősrégi napimádók. Ilyenkor egyet lehet tenni: leheveredni a homokba és nagyot nyújtózni. Éppen mint a macskák. Elvégre Várnában vagyunk.

Varna is visibly getting ready to welcome the tourists who are arriving in growing numbers each year. The most remarkable of the long line of hotels is the Kempinski which, with its 700 rooms, is the largest hotel in the Balkans. “I could spend at least a week without leaving the hotel at all,” says my colleague, justifiably. I while away a whole evening, for example, simply sitting on the balcony. Below, a line of steps leading down among the trees to the beach recalls scenes from Russian novels. I gaze at the sea and the sunset, and sip fine Bulgarian red wine (we’ll return to the wines) and I am not thinking of anything in particular, only enjoying the situation. The seventh floor where I am staying is high enough to be able to take in the entire beautiful view, but also near enough to hear the sea all night when the window is open. Or, when the spectacle of the sea has fulfilled me, two brand new restaurants can tempt me in the Kempinski: the Apple Green with its delicacies of fusion cuisine

and the Al Dente, naturally Italian and which, as its name implies, prepares everything to the Italians’ preferred taste. The chef, himself Italian, guarantees that.The “opening to the world” experienced in the city seems to be echoed in the Kempinski. The director is German, the resident manager is French and the head chef is Belgian. The world has moved in here, just like into Varna, and has brought comfort and attentiveness to all those who, enjoying a holiday, can easily find true relaxation here. Before strolling down to the beach it is worth stopping at the wellness centre. After some keep-fit exercises, there is relaxing swimming in the fresh water, nearly round pool and perhaps a couple from among the numerous types of massage – Anna’s magical hands perform miracles! It really is easy to spend a week like this.There are, of course, things which do not change – fortunately. For example, the smell of the sea or the tickling warmth of the soft

sand. Or the wines, which are so pleasant to sip in the evening sunset. Bulgaria has some very tempting wines for the curious. My favourites are the reds Gamza and Melnik, which are certainly not to be missed. The importance of viniculture is well indicated by one of the most significant Bulgarian holidays, Trifon zarezan, which is connected to the spring pruning of the grapevines. At this time the vines are sprayed with wine in order to have a large crop. Another of the unchanged attractions is the proverbially long Bulgarian dinner, spreading over even 3-4 hours. The starting course of grape brandy and fresh salad, for example the traditional Shopska salad, is followed by everything the eyes and mouth can devour. I myself would definitely vouch for barbecued specialities, and here at the seaside definitely for fish. It is worth inquiring which fish is fresh or frozen. They tell you quite frankly. Moreover, we went to a place where, instead of beating about the bush, we were directed to

another restaurant where the best seafood would be served – a thank you and appreciation afterwards. We thus got to Captain Cook’s. Here we could first indicate the selected fish, then observe how the cook prepared it for us with imposing expertise and devilish skill. I had never thought that fish could be made tender so quickly.Then again to the Golden Sands the following morning. Back to the familiar feeling as our feet sink in the sand when walking, making steps a bit difficult. The sand scatters under our soles. We admire the shells and from time to time stop to pick yet another one. My son will be very pleased. White or somewhat grey shells, each a masterpiece of nature in its own perfection, and if one happens to break under our flip-flops, never mind, there are thousands around us. The sand scatters while the sea murmurs with pleasing monotony, its calming melody slowly and surely soothing our ruffled nerves. The sun is shining dauntlessly and it makes us feel we are regaining our strength. Those ancient sun worshippers must have known something. The only thing to do is to lie down on the sand and stretch out – just like the cats. After all, we are in Varna.

Hysterical crowds, glitterati and a circus for all – the Cannes Film Festival is the largest media event in the world after the Olympic Games. A record quantity of films, thirty thousand accredited people including a thousand film directors, four thousand distributors, a multitude of movie starts and nearly four thousand journalists press, argue, swagger and report from Cannes, famed as the jewel of the French Riviera. In this 60th, jubilee year of the festival George Clooney, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and Diane Kruger will replace Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Woody Allen and Juliette Binoche on the stage of temptation. “No return to the past, deadly commemoration or blissful self-congratulation,” said Festival Director, Gilles Jacob when he gave the take-off signal for 2007. For an anniversary film, thirty-five directors from twenty-five countries of the five continents were each asked to describe in three minutes their creative experiences with motion pictures.Each year the Golden Palm for the best film, de-signed by Jean Cocteau, is supplied by Chopard Jewellers. If we look back on the history of the in-ternational film gathering at the now abbreviated Festival de Cannes, the scenery of the mind encom-passes an emotional, political and artistic impres-sion of sixty years. It all began one gloomy autumn day in 1938 when a certain French historian and diplomat, Philippe Erlanger, conceived the idea of the festival while on the train from Venice to Paris. As a member of the jury at the Venice Film

Festival, he along with others had had enough of giving awards to German and Italian propaganda films, including Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. The counter event was christened the Cannes Motion Picture Exhibition with the blessing of the then Minister of Public Education and the Arts, Jean Zay. The launch of the film festival was taken so seriously that Louis Lumière was asked to preside over the jury. However, on the day of the planned opening, 1 September 1939, the Second World War broke out and the event was put off for some time.Europe’s glamour festival eventually got underway in 1947 in the grandiose nest of reclusion, as Lord Brougham, the founder of the spa’s fame, called it. The stars of Hollywood established Cannes as the capital of cinema – Billy Wilder, Charles Vi-dor (who was of Hungarian origin), Clark Gable, Gregory Peck and Lana Turner. In 1949 the former Casino was replaced by the Croisette Palace, whose chronicle includes many a story of sensation – Pablo Picasso dressed in sheepskin in the cold, Zsa Zsa Gabor’s jewellery collection, Yves Montand’s triumph in The Wages of Fear, Sophia Loren’s sex appeal in The Gold of Naples, the would be star Simone Sylva’s naked upper body at a champagne party, Elsa Maxwell’s juicy report on Hitchcock’s muse, Grace Kelly, whose romance happened to be unfolding with Prince Rainier of Monaco at the Cannes Festival. La Dolce Vita was finally victorious in the rivalry between Fel-lini and Antonioni. Monica Vitti was crying as she ascended the magic stairs covered with the red carpet in the Festi-val Palace. After all, Antonioni’s The Adventure had already been hooted down at the press screening. Melina Mercouri conjured up a truly Greek event by dancing on the table at the premiere party of Jules Dassin’s Never on Sunday. An extraordinary spectacle greeted the fans of Visconti’s The Leopard – Claudia Cardinale and Burt Lancaster training a real leopard on the Cannes beach. Catherine Deneuve be-came a star with the film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The former newsreel cameraman-director Claude Lelouch cast a spell on the festival with the theme tune of his A Man and a Woman. In 1968 politics suddenly broke into the festival city. The heat of the Parisian student movement reached Ro-man Polanski, sunbathing with his beautiful spouse, Sha-ron Tate, as well as François Truffaut, Louis Malle and Jean-Luc Godard. It fell to them to adjourn the festival.The 1970s mainly favoured the entry of the Americans, with films like Robert Altman’s and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and M.A.S.H. Robert De Niro received an ovation and was discovered along with Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Fellini and Marco Ferreri stirred the festival waters with their films Rome and Blow-Out (La Grande Bouffe). Few films were such a flop as Heaven’s Gate, directed by Michael Cimino. And only a few films were surrounded by as much admiration as Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. 1983 still counts as a memorable year in the history of Cannes. That was when the new palace of films, nicknamed the bunker, opened its doors on 60,000 square metres in Georges Pompidou Square, next to the hydrofoil port. Fashion-creating stars trooped to Cannes: the forever renewing Deneuve, Cher conquering with her sweeping wig, Cicciolina squeezing her soft toy teddy bear, Madonna making the headlines with her satin bra designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Sharon Stone infatuating with Basic Instinct, Sophie Marceau revealing her breast as her shoulder-strap slipped down, and Isabelle Adjani idolised with Queen Margot. Quentin Tarantino with Pulp Fiction won the Golden Palm with the greatest response ever. A good ten years later, when Tarantino presided over the jury, Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 attacking the policies of the Bush era evoked contradictory feelings. Many regarded the Golden Palm awarded to the French film Mankind with its amateur characters as the scandal of scandals. In 2007 Cannes is once again the festival of great challenges and glitter, with the stars treading on the magical red carpet towards the auditorium of Grand Théâtre Lumière – madness with champagne parties, get-togethers with music and dance, dolce vita until dawn in the inviting setting by the Mediterranean.

MAThIAS RUSTAmikor a vasfüggöny már érezhetően foszladozni kezdett, de a „szocialista világrend” – az egyre lö-työgősebb eresztékei ellenére – még kétségbeesetten tartotta magát, vagyis 1987 nyarán, Mathias Rust, 19 éves német fiatalember egy könnyed mozdulat-tal nevetségessé tette a világ egyik szuperhatalmát. Cessna 172B típusú kisrepülőjével ugyanis egysze-rűen leparkolt a moszkvai Vörös téren a döbbent tu-risták és a nem kevésbé döbbent szovjet hatóságok orra előtt. „A béke követeként érkeztem” – mondta ártatlan mosollyal a szemüveges Mathias Rust, akit, saját bevallása szerint, egy belső hang biztatott a repülésre. A világ közvéleménye enyhén szólva is gúnyos mosollyal figyelte, ahogy a szovjet elhárítás magyarázza a bizonyítványát, mely szerint „mező-gazdasági repülőnek” nézték a Cessnát. A magya-rázat senkit nem hatott meg, legkevésbé Gorbacsov akkori szovjet államfőt, aki egyetlen mozdulattal menesztette a honvédelmi minisztert, a légierő pa-rancsnokát, valamint 2000 olyan vezető tisztségvise-lőt, akik egyébként is ellenezték a reformjait…Mathias Rust röpülése tehát felgyorsította a szov-jetunióbeli változásokat, bár nem feltétlenül úgy, ahogy azt a fiatalember eredetileg tervezte. Rust egy darabig egy német kórházban dolgozik, ahol belesze-ret egy nővérbe. MAThIAS RUSTIn the summer of 1987, when the Iron Curtain was palpably beginning to break asunder, but when the

“socialist system”, despite its increasingly loose joints, still maintained itself in desperation, a 19-year-old German called Mathias Rust made a superpower look ridiculous with a playful movement. He simply parked his small Cessna 172B airplane on Moscow’s Red Square in front of surprised tourists and the astonished Soviet authorities.

“I’ve come as a delegate of peace,” the bespectacled Rust announced with an innocent smile, claiming he had been encouraged to fly by an internal voice. With sarcastic amusement to say the least did world public opinion observe Soviet intelligence explaining itself as having mistaken the Cessna for an “agricultural plane”. The explanation convinced no one, not least the then Soviet head of state, Mikhail Gorbachev, who with a single move fired the minister of defence, the air force commander and 2000 leading officials who anyway opposed his reforms.Thus the flight of Mathias Rust accelerated the changes in the Soviet Union, though not exactly as the young man had originally planned. Rust was sentenced to eight years in prison and not much could be heard of him. Those who still followed the unusual peace fighter’s life attentively say discouragingly that perhaps it was better that way, since Rust’s later activity profoundly tarnished the prestige of a hero whom many wanted to see in him.The eight years shrank to 14 months. On 3 August 1988, following a 432 day imprisonment, his cell door suddenly opened and Rust, who was first thought to have been taken to a labour camp, was asked to pack his belongings, given his suit and told that he was a recipient of presidential clemency. That same evening he arrived in Frankfurt.From then on events speed up, sometimes interpolated with quite unbelievable stories. For a while Rust works in a German hospital, where he falls in love with a nurse. However, the love story,

A few years later Mathias’s appearance with his second wife, Athena, whom he met in Trinidad is reported from Berlin. Exactly twenty years have passed since Mathias Rust shocked the world. The twists in history, he thinks, have proved him correct. “I’m still convinced that my idea was the right one,” he once said in an interview. “It showed anything is possible”.

A lapzártánk után sorra került verseny volt az első alka-lom, hogy az Air Race Dél-Amerika földjére költözött. A pilóták Rio híres sziluettjének lenyűgöző háttere előtt repültek. ThE AIR ShOWFLIES ONFollowing the exciting start of the 2007 Red Bull Air Race, when the Hungarian Péter Besenyei won the round in front of nearly 300,000 spectators in Abu Dhabi, the flying circus has turned to Rio de Janei-ro in Brazil. The competition, which took place after our magazine went to press, was the first time the Air Race was held in South America. The pilots flew with the enthralling silhouette of Rio behind them. Spectators were watching on the ground as the world’s top pilots swept along at speeds reaching 400 km per hour, resisting even 10 G of gravity while describing complicated formulas in the sky.The future timetable in brief:Saturday, 12 May, Monument Valley, which lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation in the

southwestern part of the USA. The Navajo name for the valley is Tsé Bii' Ndzisgaii meaning ‘Valley of the Rocks’. This is followed by Istanbul in Turkey, and on 23 June the fifth round will be held in Spain’s second largest city, Barcelona. On 15 June the location will be the mountain resort of Interlaken in southwest Switzerland, in the heart of the Alps. Red Bull flyers will arrive in Budapest for the greatest Hungarian holiday on 20 August and will present their hair-raising performances above the picturesque banks of the Danube, a location recognised as part of the world’s heritage.This will be followed by Porto, the second largest city of Portugal, then on 22 September comes San Diego, on the Mexican border of the USA. On 13 October the engines will roar in Acapulco, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and finally the 2007 race will end on 4 No-vember in the vibrant and modern city of Perth in western Australia.

MOZIbAN MANCS,A KUTYA-SZTÁRHamarosan játékfilmet készí-tenek a világhírű magyar men-tőkutyáról, Mancsról. A tavaly októberben elpusztult német-juhász élete 12 évében rengeteg embert mentett meg, a leghíre-sebb akciója mégis az 1999-es tö-rök földrengés idején történt. Egy hároméves kislányt talált meg, aki akkorra már 82 órát töltött a romok alatt. De Mancs kivette a részét egyebek között a 2001-es salvadori és indiai földrengések utáni mentésből is. Olyan külön-leges kiképzést kapott, hogy más-hogy jelezte, ha élő vagy halott embert talált akár tíz méterrel is a föld alatt, sőt, víz alatti hullát is tudott jelezni.Pedig kölyökkorában nem jósoltak neki nagy karriert: néhány hónapra rá, hogy 11 testvérével együtt meglátta a napvilágot, az állatorvos diszpláziát állapított meg nála. Gazdája, Lehóczki László, aki a 18 tagú Miskolci Speciális Men-tőcsoport alapítója és vezetője, azonban nem adta fel: elővette azt a kengyelt, amit a gyerekei kaptak még csecsemőkorukban csípőfi-cam ellen, és Mancs fél éven keresztül ebben aludt. A kezelés meghozta az eredményét: a kutya meg-gyógyult és minden idők egyik legjobb magyar mentőkutyája lett. A híres izmiti esetnél a hírtele-víziók egyenesben közvetítették Mancs hőstettét, és az egész világ megismerhette a nevét. A miskol-ci mentőcsoport kitüntetést kapott, Mancs pedig a legnagyobb ajándékot: gazdája ölbe vette, és Mancs megnyalogathatta az arcát… Az állat még életében szobrot kapott szülővárosában, Miskolcon, amely, miután Mancs tüdőgyulladásban elpusztult, való-ságos zarándokhellyé vált.

A filmben valós elemeket használnak fel kutya és gaz-dája közös életéből: a stáb már másfél éve dolgozik Lehóczki Lászlóval, a forgatókönyvet is a vele folyta-tott beszélgetések alapján írták. A filmkészítők jelen-leg az idomárt és a főszereplőket keresik. „Minden kutyás filmben legalább két, de néha több kutya is «játssza» ugyanazt a szerepet – mondja Kántor László, a film producere. – A kutya ugyanis szuverén lény, és ha olyanja van, nem csinál semmit. És mivel egy forgatási nap több millióba kerül, nem állhat addig a stáb, amíg megjön a kedve.” A magyar–német–osztrák–török kop-rodukcióban készülő film igazi családi film lesz és vár-hatóan jövő ősszel kerül az európai mozikba.

MANCS,ThE STAR DOGIN ThE MOVIESA feature film is soon to be made about the world famous Hungarian rescue dog, Mancs (Paw). The German shepherd, who died in October last year, saved many lives during the 12 years of his life. The dog’s greatest deed was in 1999 after the earthquake in Turkey, he found a three-year-old girl under the ruins. The little girl had been trapped for 82 hours. Mancs also took part in rescue operations after the earthquakes in Salvador and India in 2001. He received special training and gave different signals when he had detected a person alive or dead, even ten metres under the ground, and he could also detect dead bodies in water. When he was a puppy nobody thought he would have a great career: a few months after he was born as one of 12 offspring, he was diagnosed as having dysplasia. Its owner, László Lehóczki, who is founder and leader of the 18-member Special Rescue Team in Miskolc, did not give up: he found special straps that his children had had to wear when they were babies to correct dislocation of the hip, and for six months Mancs wore them when he was sleeping. The treatment was successful: the dog was cured and became one of the best Hungarian rescue dogs of all time. Mancs’s famous deed in Iz-mit, Turkey, was broadcast live on television, and his name became known all over the world. The rescue team in Miskolc was given an award, and Mancs was given the greatest gift ever: his owner took him in his lap, and he was allowed to lick his face… A statue of the dog was erected in Mis-kolc while it was still alive, and after he died of pneumonia, the place where the statue is located became a place of pilgrimage.In the film true elements are used from the life of the dog and his owner: the crew has been working with László Lehóczki for eighteen months, and the script was written on the basis of the conversations held with him. Presently the filmmakers are looking for the trainer and the leading actors. “In all films about dogs there are at least two or even more dogs

“acting” the same role”, said László Kántor, film producer. “A dog is an independent creature, and it doesn’t do anything it doesn’t want to. As one day of filming costs millions, the crew cannot just sit and wait until the dog feels like working.” The film is being made as part of a Hungarian–German-Austrian–Turkish co-production, it will be a real family film and is expected to come to European cinemas next autumn.

Ha egy külföldinek rövid idő alatt sokat szeret-nénk megmutatni abból, kik is vagyunk – vol-tunk, az út az Őrségbe vezessen! Az ember úgy jár ide, Vas megye délnyugati csücskébe, mi-ként a templomba. Miután itt nagyjából áll az idő, van mihez mérni az élet változásait.A határszélt az államalapítás idején – jó ezer esz-tendeje – népesítették be az őrizetet ellátókkal, akik ezért kiváltságokat kaptak. Ha pedig már vigyázásra lettek kiválasztva, hát ehhez ala-kították életformájukat is. A házak dombokra épültek, a lakóhelyek amolyan stabil szekértá-borokká váltak, amelyek közt nem kanyarog-tak utcák, a házak hátukat egymásnak vetve csoportokat alkottak, ezeket „szer”-nek nevez-ték el: Pityer-szernek, Kovács-szernek, egy-egy népesebb családnak vagy a praktikumnak ál-lítva emléket. A házak elejére épített családi erődítményekbe, a kastukba kis fantáziával ma is oda lehet képzelni a nyíllal, lándzsával hadakozó férfiakat. A ház végében a tavacska, a „tuka” a sürgős vízellátást szolgálta.A békésebb napokban az itt élőknek az erdők adták a kenyeret. Aztán az irtásterületen a földművelés, az állattenyésztés. The tuka, a small pond behind the house was used for water when urgently needed. In peaceful times woods provided a living for the residents. Then there was farm-ing and animal husbandry on the cleared patches. Cattle grew fat on the vivid green pastures. The farmers used to drive them to the market in Graz. However, land was not worth much. Clay was turned into a living

– one of the most important pottery centres was created in the valley of Velemér. If something counts as history here it should be calculated in a thousand years – the tra-de, the story of the first men producing clay pots goes back to the thirteenth century.

melyeket egy időben a grazi vásárra hajtottak a gazdák. A föld nem volt túl sokat érő, ám az agyagból is kenyér lett: megszü-letett Magyarország egyik leghíresebb fazekasközpontja a Velemér-völgyben. És ha itt valami történelem, akkor illik ezer évben számolni: a szakma, az első agyagot gyurmázó ember története a XIII. századik nyúlik vissza. A habánokról csak a XVI. század óta emlékezik meg a krónika. A legjobb kezű ke-ramikusok Delftben, az itáliai Faenzában tanulták a szakmát. Mai utódaikat Veleméren, Gödörházán, Magyarszombatfán ér-demes keresni…Ha egy alföldi magyar ember vetődik az Őrségbe, az első, ami megfogja, az a klíma maga. A Hortobágy környéki 500 milli-méteres évi csapadéknak itt a duplája esik. Ez aztán meglát-szik mindenen, ami vegetáció: a zöld aranylóan zöld, a gyü-mölcsfák terebélyesek, a szlovén határ környékén pedig még tőzegmohaláp is megtalálható, amihez fogható csak valahol az orosz tajgákon tenyészik. Egy vastag perzsaszőnyeg lebeg a víz tetején, amely még az embert is elbírja, ha éppen sétálni támad rajta kedve.És az államhatár… Itt állt az a bizonyos vasfüggöny, s a bögölycsípte tehenek vágtájának olykor egy-egy felrobbanó akna vetett véget. Az idősebbek még emlékeznek a jószágok ke-serves bőgésére.Az Őrség egyik csodája a veleméri Szentháromság-templom. A XIII. század utolsó éveiben épülhetett, ettől románosan zömök, de már gótikusan csúcsíves is. A freskóit Aqvilla János készítet-te, egyik képére saját magát is odapingálta. A betájolt ablakokon keresztül a Nap egy-egy kép megvilágításával hívja fel a hívők

Written documents mention Haban ceramics only from the 16th century. The most skilled potters learnt the craft in Delft and in Faenza. It is worth looking for their present-day successors in the villages of Velemér, Gödör-háza and Magyarszombatfa.If a Hungarian from the Great Plain happens to be in the Őrség what he finds surprising is the climate. The annual rainfall here is twice that of the 500 millimetres in the Hortobágy. That is clearly visible in the vegetation. Green is shiningly green, the fruit trees are patulous and even peat-moss swamp can still be found by the Slovenian border, the like of which occurs only in the Russian taigas. A thick Persian carpet floats on the water. It can even withstand a person should he happen to feel like walking on it. The state border, the Iron Curtain used to be here, and the bolting of the gad-fly bitten cows was sometimes halted by an exploding mine. The elderly still remember the desperate mooing of the cattle. The Holy Trinity church in the village of Velemér is a miracle of the Őrség. It must have been built in the last years of the 13th century, and so it is stocky in a Romanesque style but already Gothicly pointed. The frescoes were painted by János Aqvilla, who depicted himself in one. Through the appropriately oriented windows the sun would draw the attention of churchgoers to the figure of a saint, celebrated by the light cast on a picture. The bell in skirted belltowers would ring for the residents of poorer settlements. The belltower in Pankasz standing on the hillside of the Eastern-szer since 1754 is one of the most famous. The so-called paszita is a fine tradition of the region. Baptism is not celebrated by holding the baby under holy water, but a name-giving ceremony is often held for a school aged child, when perhaps even a dozen paszita parents vouch to keep an eye on the honoured person through whatever life may bring. At the family celebration the number of gifts on the table grows proportionately with the number of such parents. What a pity this admirable tradition is slowly disappearing from the village culture of Őriszentpéter, Szalafő, Ispánk, Nagyrákos, Szatta and Kondorfa.When the visitor gets tired of wondering into the past, he can find himself in the present from one moment to the next. If his stomach indicates it is lunchtime he will not remain hungry. The local dish of dödölle is still made in the Bodnár restaurant of Őriszentpéter. We can try eating it as a course on its own, although it is a delicious side dish with game. No cook can be heavy-handed enough not to be

Ezek közül az egyik leghí-resebb a pankaszi, mely 1754 óta áll a Keleti-szer dombján.A táj kedves hagyománya a paszita: a ke-resztelőt nem a csecsemő víz alá tartásá-val ünneplik, hanem olykor iskoláskorú gyereknek tartanak névadót, melyen akár tucatnyi paszitaszülő is vállalja az ünnepelt szemmel tartását az élet sod-rában. A családi rendezvényen az aján-dékok a paszitaszülők számával arányo-san gyülekeznek az asztalon… Kár, hogy ez a szép hagyomány lassan kikopik Őriszentpéter, Szalafő, Ispánk, Nagyrá-kos, Szatta, Kondorfa kultúrájából.Ha a vendég belefáradt a múltban való barangolásba, egyik pillanatról a má-sikra a jelenben találhatja magát. Ha a gyomra „kongatja a delet”, éhen nem marad. Az őriszentpéteri Bodnár ven-déglőben még ismerik a receptjét a dödöllének, aminek önálló fogásként is nekigyürkőzhetünk, bár a vadételek mellé is remek kíséret. Nincs az a két-balkezes szakács, aki el ne tudná készí-teni: a főtt krumplit összetörjük, liszt-tel keverjük, aztán a masszát hagymás zsírban megpirítjuk. Öklömnyi gom-bócokban tálaljuk, ám, hogy az éjsza-kánk semmiképp ne legyen nyugodt, tejföllel gazdagon meg is locsoljuk. Ha még néhány korsó sört is küldünk utá-na, biztos, hogy álmainkban lidércek táncolnak majd a pocakunkon…A táj jellegzetességének számít a vad-körtepálinka, ami már csak szájha-gyományokban él. Hiába kerestük, kutattuk, nem tudtunk egyetlen korty-nyinak sem a nyomára akadni. Min-denesetre legendának szép legenda a

In vain did we search and seek. We could not come across it. Nevertheless, wild pear pálinka makes for a nice legend. Those who feel like some goat’s milk find themselves at the right place in the Őrség Délicatesse Manufacture of Attila Sándor Buzás in the village of Magyarszombatfa. First, there are eighty goats as a spectacle – all clean and noble animals. Then one goes inside the plant, where all sorts of cheese delicacies are produced. The master brought the recipes from France. Then the fish restaurant of Bajánsenye serves such excellent catfish that the customer can only marvel and immediately look for the river Danube

under the window – of course, in vain.In summer Lake Vadása is peace itself. Green trees admire themselves in the reflection of the water. However, it is no longer specifically characteristic of the Őr-ség. Here the past mixes with the present, with second homes, pavilions serving fried meat and selling Gösser lager. Perhaps it is best to leave this experience to the end of the holiday, otherwise the traveller may take home this not quite authentic image of the Őrség.So what does stay with us? The saints of the Velemér church, the potters’ masterpieces, Haban ceramics, the church in Őriszentpéter from the stone-hard Romanesque time, the skirted belltowers in Pankasz and Magyarszombatfa, recalling the past in Szalafő, and the green of the countryside, which nature can only generate when satisfied. No wonder, when saying goodbye there is always an addition – I can tell you, I will definitely return.

Aki viszont a kecske nevű mekegő állat tejére szom-jazik, jó helyen jár, ha betéved Buzás Attila Sándor magyarszombatfai Őrségi Ínyes Manufaktúrájába. Bajánsenye halászcsárdája meg olyan kiváló ízű harcsákkal szol-gál, hogy a vendég csak álmélkodik és menten az ablak alatt folyó Dunát keresi – persze, hiába.Nyáron a Vadása-tó maga egy korty nyugalom. Zöld erdő nézegeti magát a víz tükrében, ám ez már nem őrségi specifikum: hétvégi házakkal, pecsenyesütők-kel, Gösser sörös pavilonokkal itt a jelen keveredik a múlttal. Jó ezt az élményt az utazás végére hagyni, mert az utazó ezzel a képpel búcsúzik az Őrségtől.De azért ami megmarad! A veleméri templom szentjei, a göröncsérek mestermunkái, a habán kerámiák, az őriszentpéteri templom a kőkemény román korból, a szoknyás haranglábak Pankaszról, Magyarszombatfáról, aztán a szalafői múltidézés, az egész tájnak az a zöldje, amit a természet csak jókedvében tud kikeverni. Nem csoda, hogy úgy búcsúzik innen az ember: Bizony, mondom néktek, ide még visszatérek!

Champs Beyond the menuapetito, celebrating its first anniversary this month, is situated near holy trinity square in the heart of the castle district. it is worth dropping in, even just for a short taster or a ‘bite’. however, we can also find authentic hungarian specialities here, made just like grandma used to, reproducing the flavours of the hungarian countryside. two kinds of menu, two restaurant interiors and two ex-periences – welcome to apetito! by the en-trance we are greeted by manager lászló jakabffy who defines himself as only a ‘res-taurateur’, in place of all sorts of high-flown titles. and that says everything.

On the menuwhy apetito? we will soon learn the an-swer. we may taste several pages worth of items, since 24 types of dishes are offered in quantities which are small to be filling but more than enough for a tasting, thus unselfishly leaving sufficient space for other choices. the 24 types of dishes call for 24 kinds of wine, which are stored in a device called enomatic, allowing wine to remain fresh in an opened bottle. those who wish for a more ‘homogenous’ dinner can select from the other menu which has just as deli-cious food but far more substantial portions with such promising items as knuckle of lamb en terrine with poached vegetables or our favourite roast fillet of pork matured in cigar smoke with wild mushrooms, red wine flavoured onion jam and potato tartlet.

– fácánerőleves fásgaluskával és füstölt fürj-tojással, főétel pedig egy bélszín kedvessy módra, juhtúrós sztrapacskával. ezekért tehát kezeskedünk… de érdemes alaposan tanul-mányozni az étlapot, amely további kulináris élvezetekre csábít. s amit ki ne hagyjanak, kérjék meg a tudós somelliere-k egyikét, hogy ajánljon a gazdag választékból bort is. nekünk sikerült vagy négyfélét is fogyasztanunk, hogy most az aperitívekről ne is beszéljünk…

Beyond the menuwant to experience the feel of 1920s ameri-ca? if so, do nothing else but visit jókai street behind the great boulevard in the heart of budapest’s city centre, which is one of the gastronomic high streets of the hungarian capital. in 2002 the hungarian cotton club pitched here and its ambiance echoes the world of the first cotton club, which oper-ated on 43rd street in new york. a fantastic world awaits visitors – an elegant restaurant, a cards room, a cigar room, an Orpheum hall where one of budapest’s most magnificent actresses happens to be on right now. and, first of all – music. the most noted hungarian jazz bands occupy the stage here. the best bet is to drive straight here from the airport and take one of the 23 rooms, each with a unique style and individually furnished.

On the menuthe reviewer’s choice? starter – smoked breast of duck carpaccio with seasoned salad and parmesan chippings; soup – pheasant consommé with dumplings and smoked quail egg; and the main course – beef steak a'la kedvessy with ewe cheese dumplings. thus we can vouch for these. however, the menu deserves to be studied longer, since it tempts towards further culinary delights. and what not to omit? certainly ask one of the connoisseur sommeliers to recommend wine from the rich selection. we managed to consume some four kinds, not speaking of the aperitifs.

Étlapon kívüla champs étterem nemcsak a nevében ünnepli a bajnokokat: tulajdonosai világhírű magyar sportolók és olimpikonok, nem csoda hát, ha az étterem tele van relikviákkal, kupák-kal, focimezekkel és focizászlókkal, ráadásul minden asztalnál külön televízióval, ahol – mi más mint – sportműsorok mennek. van itt jég-korong, vízilabda vagy krikett – ott jártunkkor agárverseny ment –, ám az igazi sláger ter-mészetesen a foci. egy-egy tétmeccs idejére már napokkal előbb érdemes asztalt foglalni. aki pedig mégsem rajong a sportért, annak kéthetente retroparty, a legfiatalabbaknak pedig a hétvégeken ricsi bohóc és játszó-ház – a megkönnyebbült szülők pedig végre nyugodtan végigehetnek egy ebédet.

Étlapon belülfogyókúra alatt étteremajánlót írni – tantaloszi gyötrelem, ráadásul ordító ellentmondás. de ami itt van, az egészséges és ráadásul nagyon finom. kevés helyen találnak ilyen választékot azok, akik vigyázni szeretnének a vonalaikra. a champsben pedig semmit nem bíznak a véletlenre: az ételek neve mellett nemcsak a kalória- és fehérjeadatok látha-tók, de az is, hogy mennyit kell bicikliznünk, futnunk vagy aerobikoznunk, ha szeretnénk azt a fogást ledolgozni. ellenőriztem: az ubor-kasaláta mindössze öt perc úszás, ellenben a libacomb párolt káposztával már közel négy óra. (csendben jegyzem meg, még így is megéri…)

Beyond the menuchamps restaurant not only celebrates champions with its name – it is owned by internationally famous hungarian sportsmen and Olympic champions; thus no wonder the restaurant is full of sports relics, cups, football club vests and banners and, in ad-dition, each table has its own tv set, where naturally sports programmes can be viewed. ice hockey, water polo or cricket – when we were there greyhound-racing was on – but of course football is the real hit. booking a table is advised when a top match is played. those who are not so much in for sports can enjoy a retro-party every other week. at weekends the youngest are entertained by richie the clown and a play corner. hence relieved parents can at last sit through their dinner in a relaxed manner.

On the menuto write about a restaurant when one is on a diet is tantalization itself, besides being a cry-ing contradiction. there are not many places to be found for those who want to watch their weight. what is on offer here is both healthy and delicious. and nothing is left to chance. the menu not only specifies calories and pro-tein quantities next to the dishes, but also informs us how long to ride a bike, run or do aerobics if we want to work off the meal. i have checked. cucumber salad is only a five minute swim. however, goose leg with braised cabbage requires nearly four hours. (let me quietly note it is still worth it.)

Étlapon kívüla várnegyed szívében, közel a szentháromság térhez találjuk az apetitót, amely ebben a hónapban ünnepli első születésnapját. akár egy rövid kóstolóra, egy „falatkára” is érdemes beugrani, de igazi magyar különlegességeket is találunk, úgy, ahogy valamikor a nagymama készítette: a magyar vidék ízeit. kétféle étlap, kétféle étterembelső és kétféle életérzés – üd-vözöljük az apetitóban. a bejárattal szemben jakabffy lászló, az étterem vezetője köszön ránk, aki a sokféle fellengzős titulus helyett egyszerűen csak „vendéglősként” definiálja magát. és ebben benne is van minden.

Étlapon belülhogy miért „apetito”, arra hamar választ kapunk. az étlapról akár több oldalnyit is megkóstolhatunk, hiszen 24-féle ételt kínál-nak olyan mennyiségben, ami a jóllakáshoz kevés, ám a kóstoláshoz bőven elegendő, és önzetlen módon a többi falatnak is hagy elég helyet. a 24-féle ételhez pedig 24-féle bor dukál, amelyet egy enomatic nevű szerkezet-ben tartanak, ahol a megbontott palackban is mindvégig friss marad a bor. tehát minden falatot kiegészíthetünk az annak megfelelő nedűvel. aki pedig „homogénebb” ebédre vágyik, annak természetesen ott a másik étlap, ugyanolyan finom, csak jóval emberesebb adagokkal és olyan ígéretes nevekkel, mint az agyagedényben sütött báránycsülök posírozott zöldségekkel vagy kedvencünk, a szivarfüstben érlelt szűzpecsenye erdei gombákkal, vörösboros hagymalekvárral és burgonyatortácskával.

KIS MAGyAR WALL STREETA magyar tőzsde legújabb kori története 1987-ben veszi kezdetét, miután 22 hazai bank megállapodik: elősegíti egy szabályozott formájú értékpapír-keres-kedelmi platform létrejöttét. A börze fogantatásának pillanata a Tőzsdetanács 1988-as megalakulása. 1990-ben az Országgyűlés elfogadja az új értékpapírtör-vényt, még abban az évben létrejön a Budapesti Ér-téktőzsde (BÉT), 42 évvel elődje bezárása után.A kereskedés 1990 júniusában kezdődik, kezdetben csak néhány részvénnyel. 1991-ben és 1992-ben az államkötvényekkel és a kárpótlási jegyekkel bővül a paletta; a börze forgalma ennek, illetve a kibocsátók száma növekedésének köszönhetően villámgyorsan emelkedik. Jelzi az ütemet, hogy míg 1990-ben a napi átlagos forgalom húszmillió forint, 1998-ban már bő-ven tízmilliárd forint fölött jár. A határidős piac 1995-ben indul, 1999-től pedig az egész börze áttér egy tel-jesen automatizált kereskedési rendszerre. 2004-ben döntés születik a BÉT és a Budapesti Árutőzsde egye-süléséről. SMALL HUNGARIAN WALL STREETThe most recent history of the Hungarian stock exchange began in 1987 when 22 Hungarian banks agreed to facilitate the foundation of a platform for dealing in stocks in a regulated way. In 1990 Parliament passed a new law on securities, which created the legislation for the establishment of the Stock Exchange. The Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT) was founded in that very year, 42 years after the closure of its predecessor. Dealing began in June 1990 with only a few shares listed at the beginning. In 1991 and 1992 the range was extended with government bonds and compensation coupons. The turnover of the exchange increased swiftly. In 1990 the average daily turnover was twenty million forints, while in 1998 it amounted to well over ten billion. The futures market began in 1995 and since 1999 the entire Stock Exchange has involved a completely automated trading system. In 2004 a decision was made to merge BÉT and the Budapest Commodity Exchange. BUX, the official share price index of BÉT was first published on 2 April 1991. The initial value was the thousand points of 2 January 1991.In March 2007 BÉT had 132 thousand transactions, with 159 million shares exchanging owners in a total value of 626 billion forints. The capitalization of the Stock Exchange amounted to 18,727 billion forints, in the form of 8504 billion forints worth of government bonds and shares amounting to 7414 billion forints.

a Malév a magas színvonalú fedélzeti kiszolgálás érdekében a légi-utaskísérők munkájának értékelésében az utasok visszajelzései mellett a kollégák véleményére is támaszkodik. a társaság légi-utaskísérő osztályán márciusban írták ki „az év légi-utaskísérője” választást. a maléves kollégák összesen 1719 szavazatot adtak le. a voksolás eredményeképp a „Malév 2006. év légi-utaskísérője” cím nyertesei dr. baloghné zácsfalvi alexandra, bátyiné polyák cecilia, csetneki csaba, endes péter, joó erzsébet, karády györgy, kecskés zsófia, kiss valéria, kovács Mariann, pálinkás györgyi, petőfalvi gábor, rezneki rita és terényi fanni lettek. a győztesek a kitüntető jelvényt egy éven át viselhetik.

Már ausztráliáig utazHat a Malévvel

a oneworld szövetség két tag-légitársasága, a Malév és az ausztrál Qantas 2007. április 16-án code-share, azaz közös üze-melésű járatok indításáról kötött kereskedelmi megállapodást. az együttműködés értelmében az első közös járat április 30-án szállt fel bangkokból sydneybe, a Malév kóddal ellátott Qantas által üzemeltetett járattal. a Malév utasai így májusban már egy bangkoki átszállással eljuthatnak budapestről ausztráliáig. a magyar nemzeti légitársaság a nyári menetrendi időszakban hetente kétszer repül bangkokba, ahonnan kényelmes és gyors csatlakozás kínálkozik a Qantas sydneybe induló járataira.

a new York-i repülőtér frissen felújított, legmodernebb és legna-gyobb terminálja fogadja és indítja a Malév járatait május 9-étől. a john f. kennedy repülőtéren a 9-es terminál az american airlines bázis-termináljaként szolgálja amerika és a világ legna-gyobb légitársaságának utasait május közepétől. az american airlines járatai mellett még két oneworld taglégitársaság kapott helyet a felújított terminálon, a finnair és a Malév. a magyar légi-társaság utasainak az új terminál gyors és egyszerű csatlakozást tesz lehetővé az american airlines belföldi és nemzetközi járataira, emellett élvezhetik a korszerű légikikötő nyújtotta előnyöket is.

invited to a joint celebration, parti-cipants of the air travel market were treated to a reception by Malév on board the ship la peniche to celebrate the Hungarian national airline joining the oneworld alliance. guests were delighted by the view of dublin and its city centre from the water. in lon-don, in the world famous stanfords map and travel book store the management and staff of the british offices of japan air lines and Ma-lév celebrated membership of the oneworld alliance.

neW aircraft in Malév’s fleet

a boeing 767-300 er, the latest aircraft to join Malév’s fleet, was put into service on 15 april 2007. as for passenger capacity, this is the largest airplane in the airline’s history. the first flight of the 229-seat craft was scheduled for the bu-dapest – bangkok route. the aircraft will be in service both for chartered and scheduled long-haul flights. the airplane’s entertainment system provides music on ten channels, and is able to project two films simultaneously in tourist class, and six films in business class on the lcd monitors built into the seats.

“fligHt attendants of tHe Year”

in order to achieve the best possible on-board service, Malév continuously evaluates the performance of the airline’s flight attendants. the evaluation is based partly on customer feedback, and partly on other employees’ opinions. in March this year the “flight attendant of the year” elections were proclaimed by the airline’s cabin crew department. 1719 votes were handed in by Ma-lév employees and Malév’s “flight attendant of the Year” title was awarded to alexandra zácsfalvi, cecilia polyák, csaba csetneki, péter endes, erzsébet joó, györgy karády, zsófia kecskés, valéria kiss, Mariann kovács, györgyi pálinkás, gábor petőfalvi, rita rez-neki and fanni terényi. the winners will be entitled to wear the award badge for one year.

noW You can flY Malév to australia

Malév and the australian Qantas, both members of the oneworld alliance, signed a code-share agreement on 16 of april 2007. the first flight of this cooperation, operated by Qantas and also having a Malév code, was scheduled for the bangkok – sydney route on the 30 of april. starting from May, Malév customers can fly from budapest to australia with a single transfer in bangkok. in the summer, Hungarian airlines will fly to bangkok twice a week, where a convenient and prompt connection to sidney will be awaiting them.

Malev Moves to a neWterMinal in neW York

beginning on 9 May, the Malév service is available in the newly reconstructed, largest and most modern terminal at jfk in new York. starting mid-May, terminal number 9 serves customers of american airlines, america’s and the world’s largest carrier. two other members of oneworld, finnair and Malév will operate flights to and from the same terminal. for Malév customers this will mean quick and comfortable transfers to the flights of american airlines, while they can enjoy the many advantages of a modern airport.

the monthly income from online ticket sales of the Hungarian national airline exceeded Huf one billion in March 2007. 50% of the tickets sold directly by the airline are bought over the internet, setting a new sales record every month. in comparison with the same period of last year, monthly average online sales increased by 150%. 35% of the tickets sold online are bought by Hungarian customers, but ireland, great britain, and germany also prove to be significant markets. data on internet sales indicate that – beside budapest – the most popular destinations are cities in germany, great britain and romania.

A magyar nemzeti légitársaság budapesti bázis-repülőterén látványos ünnepségekkel köszöntöt-te, hogy a szövetség teljes jogú tagjává válhatott. Malév joined oneworld, the world’s leading air alli-ance on 1 April, exactly a month ago. The Hungarian national carrier welcomed becoming a full member of the alliance with spectacular celebrations at its base airport in Budapest. Malév held an aircraft proces-sion, so far unique in the history of oneworld, where airplanes of four oneworld member airlines (Malév’s B737-800 aircraft, Royal Jordanian’s A321, Finnair’s A319 and a B757 British Airways aircraft) rolled to-gether under a celebratory water curtain in a stately manner. During the ceremonies besides the top leaders of our airline and oneworld, the ministers of foreign af-fairs and finance of the Hungarian government and high ranking representatives of the member airlines expressed their appreciation of the significance of Malév’s joining the alliance. Uniformed representa-tives symbolized each of the oneworld member air-lines at the function.

What is a slot-time?Sándor Devecz: Flying is an increasingly popular form of travel, and so traffic has increased signifi-cantly over the past few years, both in the air and at the airports. One of the most important ele-ments of the safety of flying is separation in terms of both space and time, as here we are talking about vehicles travelling at great speeds, the pilots of which can not necessarily see each other, just think of the importance of the braking distance between cars.

“Slot-time” is a predetermined time point when we have to fly past a location set by traffic control. Traffic control needs this to reduce the crowded-ness of the airspace and the airports, so that they can in some way cope with the situation. The traffic flying over a large airport like those in London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or New York is immense, and this local crowdedness also has to be controlled.A flight may get a slot-time, however, not only to reduce overcrowding but for service reasons

– this is the “airport slot” when there is simply no standing room to receive the aircraft, because, for example, the ground staff are on strike, the weath-er deteriorates, wind direction changes, there is storm activity, it is snowing heavily or the runway is icy. At such times, if possible, take-off is delayed, if though, these circumstances occur after take-off, we have to circle and wait our turn for traffic control to take us down.When you are late just remember it is always in the interest of your safety.

Mi az a slot-time?Devecz Sándor: A légi-közlekedés egyre népsze-rűbb utazási forma, ezért a forgalom is jelentősen megnövekedett az utóbbi néhány évben, mind a leve-gőben, mind a repülőtereken. A repülés biztonságának egyik fontos eleme a térben és időben történő elkülö-nítés, hisz itt nagy sebességgel haladó járművekről van szó, amelyeknek a pilótái nem feltétlenül látják egymást. Gondoljunk a gépjárművek közötti követési távolság fontosságára.A „slot-time” résidőt jelent, egy olyan megadott időpon-tot, amelyre az irányítás által meghatározott helyen kell átrepülnünk. Erre a forgalomirányításra azért van szükség, hogy a légtér, illetve a repülőterek zsúfoltsá-gát csökkentsék, egyáltalán kezelni tudják. Egy-egy nagy repülőtér, mint a londoni, a frankfurti, az amsz-terdami vagy a New York-i fölött az átrepülő forgalom is óriási, ezt a körzeti zsúfoltságot is kezelni kell.

Why should you drink a lot when flying?Andrea Pataki: We normally emphasise the importance of liquid intake on long-haul flights, but even on three-hour journeys we pay special attention to our customers having the opportunity to drink several times. Firstly, the air on aircraft is especially dry, you get dehydrated even without doing any physical exercise whatsoever. And more serious forms of dehydration can lead to you feeling unwell, a fuzzy state of consciousness and an existing illness can be made even more serious.Secondly, from experience we know that many times there is a long time up until the passen-gers get their first drink, as you have been travelling for hours to get to the airport, you have had to stand in a long queue before pass-port control and the security check, and there was no time in the transit lounge for a drink. No one should be misled by the lack of thirst, you have to drink.By liquid intake I mean alcohol-free drinks, water, soft drinks, fruit tea. A wide range of these is available in sufficient quantity. The thing with alcohol is that up in the air your alcohol tolerance goes down, and it goes to your head more quickly. You also may react differently in the stressful situation caused by travelling than when you are down on the ground. Cheers, but take it easy!

A de-hidratálódás súlyosabb formája pedig rossz közérzethez, tompult tudatállapothoz vezethet, egy meglévő betegséget pedig súlyosbíthat.Másodszor, tapasztalatból tudjuk, hogy sokszor hosszú idő telik el, mire egy utas az első pohár innivalóhoz jut, mert órák óta utazott a repülőtérre, mert hosszú sorba kellett állnia az útlevélkezelés, a biztonsági vizsgálat előtt, és már nem maradt ideje a tranzitban egy italra. A szomjúságér-zet hiánya ne tévesszen meg senkit, inni kell.A folyadékbevitelen alkoholmentes italokat értünk, vi-zet, üdítőket, gyümölcsteát. standard of services and its good international repu-tation. The requirements oneworld expects its future members to fulfil are high, and we fulfilled them com-pletely. And it is also significant that our base in Buda-pest provides the alliance with one of the best central distribution airports in this region of the world. Our network of routes significantly increases the presence of oneworld in the region, and Malév’s logo, Hungary’s flag will be now present everywhere in the world.”

“What were the main stations of the two-year project?”“As, apart from Finnair, we had no commercial or code-share partnership relations with any other oneworld members, in practice we had to start the negotiations from the very beginning. We concluded commercial agreements with all oneworld airlines with which we found good connections in our network, we harmo-nised our frequent flyer system, which had nothing to do with anybody or anything before, we aligned our information technology systems, our reservations. This work was extremely detailed and thorough, and it had to be, too. As a result of this harmonisation now all oneworld customers, including the customers of Malév, are provided with exactly the same service, under the same conditions, on all flights of the alliance whether they are from Los Angeles or Budapest or Sydney or any-where else. The last step was the unification of certain elements of appearance and communication, such as the design of information signs on prominent airports or mentioning the name of oneworld when making on-board announcements. I also find it important to men-tion the introduction of the e-ticket, which means that instead of paper-based tickets we can issue e-tickets in connection with each other’s flights.”

“Finnair acted as Malév’s sponsor. What does the word sponsor mean in this case?”

“It is common practice within oneworld that an old member airline helps future members during their preparations for accession. When we were informed that Finnair would be our sponsor, we were pleased not only because of our traditionally good relations with Finnair, but also because the Finnish airline operates one of the most advanced information technology sys-tems, so we could profit from their experience.”

“What comes next?”“Well, life must go on. Within the alliance, there are teams working continuously, and I will continue to co-ordinate their activity at Malév. I am also in charge of contracts concluded with airlines outside the alliance. We intend to carry on developing our present network and establishing good relationships with other airlines even outside the alliance. As opposed to other global al-liances, oneworld does not prohibit or restrict such re-lationships. And after the last two years I may also now consider having a short break. My family and I are plan-ning to travel to the Far East. It will be interesting to test how the system works as a passenger, in real life…

Nem mellesleg pedig budapesti bázisunk a szövetség számára az egyik legjobb központi, elosztó repülőteret biztosítja a világnak ebben a régiójában. Útvonalhálózatunk jelentősen megnöveli a oneworld jelenlétét a térségben, de a Malév logója, egy zászlónyi Magyarország is jelen lesz a világ minden pontján.

Melyek voltak a kétéves munka legfőbb állomásai?– Mivel az egyetlen oneworld tag Finnairen kívül más lé-gitársasággal nem volt kereskedelmi, illetve code-share partneri kapcsolatunk, gyakorlatilag a nulláról kellett kezdeni a tárgyalásokat. Minden olyan oneworld tag-légitársasággal, ahol jó csatlakozásokat találtunk a há-lózatunkon, kereskedelmi szerződést kötöttünk, har-monizáltuk a törzsutasrendszerünket – amely addig senkihez és semmihez nem kötődött – összehangoltuk az IT, azaz az informatikai rendszereinket, a helyfogla-lásunkat. Ez a munka elképesztően részletes és alapos volt, annak is kellett lennie. A harmonizációval elértük, hogy a oneworld utasok, így a Malév kedves utasai is, pontosan ugyanazt a szolgáltatást kapják, ugyanolyan feltételek mellett Los Angelestől Budapesten át Sydney-ig, mint a szövetség valamennyi utasa. Az utolsó lépés a megjelenés és a kommunikáció egyes elemeinek egysé-gesítése volt, például a kiemelt repülőtereken az eligazí-tó táblák designja, a fedélzeti bemondáskor a oneworld említése. Nem szeretném kihagyni az e-ticket beveze-tésnek jelentőségét sem, hisz sikerült megvalósítani, hogy egymás járataira papírjegyek helyett e-ticketet tudunk kiállítani.

A Finnair volt a Malév szponzora. Mit jelent ebben az esetben a szponzor szó?

– oneworld gyakorlat, hogy az újoncok csatlakozási felkészülését egy már régóta tag légitársaság segíti. Amikor megtudtuk, hogy a mienk a Finnair lesz, nem csupán a hagyományos jó kapcsolatok miatt örültünk, hanem mert a finn légitársaság az egyik legfejlettebb informatikai rendszert működteti, így nagy hasznát tudtuk venni tapasztalataiknak.

A következő feladat?– Az élet nem áll meg. A szövetségen belül az egyes szakterületeken a munkacsoportok folyamatosan dolgoznak, ezek tevékenységét a továbbiakban is én koordinálom a Malévnél. A szövetségen kívüli légitár-saságokkal kötendő szerződésekért is felelős vagyok. Igyekszünk tovább fejleszteni jelenlegi hálózatunkat, és üzletileg előnyös kapcsolatokat kiépíteni más, eset-leg szövetségen kívüli légitársasággal is. A oneworld, szemben más globális szövetséggel, nem tiltja és nem is korlátozza ezt. És, két év után, talán most gondolha-tok egy rövid pihenőre is. Családommal úgy tervez-zük, hogy Távol-Keletre utazunk. Érdekes lesz utas-ként, élesben kipróbálni a rendszer működését…

Nemesné Kanyó Anikó okleveles közgazdász, a Malév szövetségi és nemzetközi kapcsolatokért felelős igazga-tó asszonya. Rövid megszakítással 1992 óta dolgozik a nemzeti légitársaságnál. Két gyermeke van, angol nyel-ven tárgyal. Jelenlegi pozícióját 2005. júliusa óta tölti be.

A oneworld csatlakozás a magyar nemzeti légitársa-ság életében a közelmúlt fontos, ha nem a legfontosabb eseménye. A projekt vezetőjeként hogyan élte meg a már-cius végi csatlakozási ünnepségeket?

– Felemelő érzés volt látni a ferihegyi betonon guruló oneworld gépek között a Malév B-737-esét, és a gép a törzsére felragasztott oneworld logót. Bevallom, elér-zékenyültem. Ott és akkor tudatosult bennem, mekko-ra munkát végeztünk. Egy nagyon izgalmas és moz-galmas időszak zárult le azon a napon.

A Malév régebben már próbálkozott globális szövetség-hez kötődni. Miért a oneworld és miért most?

– A korábbi csatlakozási próbálkozásaink alkalmával csupán társult tagságot érhettünk volna el, ami kevés-bé előnyös feltételeket jelent. 2005-ben minket keres-tek meg, ráadásul a világ vezető szövetségi csoportosu-lása, a oneworld, és a teljes jogú tagságot ajánlották fel. A megkeresés és a tárgyalások egész ideje alatt tapasz-talt egyenrangú partneri viszony minden bizonnyal

Ekaterinburg is Russia’s fourth largest city and one of central Russia’s most important industrial centres. The city was named in honour of tsarina Catherine I. From 1725 up to the October Revolution Russia’s coins were produced in the local mint. The name of the city is primarily known for being the place where 89 years ago the Bolsheviks murdered Nicholas II, the last Russian tsar of the Romanov dynasty and the whole of his family. Ekaterinburg is also known for being built on the meeting of two continents, on the border between Asia an d Europe.The city is an important transport hub. Its international airport, Koltsovo, was opened to civil air traffic in 1943. The city is also an important railway junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway with seven main lines starting out from its central station to the large towns of the region (Perm, Chelyabinsk, Tumeny, etc.).On 27 April 2007 Malév started direct scheduled flights between Budapest and Ekaterinburg, which strengthens the Eastern European market presence of the airline and ensures an important link between Russia and Europe. For transfers between ter-minals use the Port Author-ity JFK Train which operates frequently between all ter-minals at JFK as well as to stations that connect to the various New York railroad transportation systems (New York City Subway, Long Is-land Railroad).

How long does it take to transfer between termi-nals?

Allow up to 60 minutes to connect between American Air-lines and British Airways or Cathay Pacific. This should allow for sufficient time if you are clearing customs/immi-gration, transferring your baggage and navigating from one terminal to another.

The Corinth Canal shortens the sailing distance between Athens and the Adriatic Sea by more than 300 kilometres. The construction of the channel began exactly 125 years ago, in May 1882. Its plans were drafted by the Hungarian Béla Gester, in collaboration with István Türr, also a Hungarian. As the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf are separated by only six kilometres of land, even the ancient Greeks pondered over the possibility of constructing a channel to connect the two waters. No wonder that a number of monarchs made plans for the waterway. Still, it was not until the end of the nineteenth century, that the Hungarian István Türr – a general in Garibaldi’s army – asked for and obtained the permission of the Greek gov-ernment to begin the work. Béla Gester, who had already gained experience with the Panama channel, employed four thou-sand workers for the excavation. However, the gods seemed to disapprove the idea of the channel. The capital collected for the construction was lost and the contractor went bankrupt. A year and a half had passed before they were able to start over again. This time an earthquake shook the area: a 30-metre stretch collapsed and many of the workers died. But thanks to the labourers’ heroic struggle, the con-struction, which was considered a great technical achievement of the era, was eventually completed. No locks were built and highway traffic crosses the channel through submersible bridges. This means that the bridge simply submerges in the water as a ship approaches. No wonder that both George, king of Greece and Franz Joseph, Austro-Hungarian emperor proudly attended the opening ceremony in 1893. Taking a look at the statistics, we get a picture of the dimensions of the construction. During the 6345-metre excavation 1200 tons of gunpowder and 450 tons of dynamite were used to mine out 11 mil-lion cubic metres of stone. 11 thousand vessels sail through the Corinth Canal every year.

Nem csoda, hogy számos uralkodó fejében született terv a csatorna megépítésére, ám a megvalósításra egészen a XIX. század végéig kellett várni, amikor is Türr István – aki egyébként Garibaldi tábornoka volt – megkérte és meg is kapta a görög kor-mány engedélyét a csatorna megépítéséhez.A Panama-csatornánál már gyakorlatot szerzett Gerster Béla négyezer munkással kezdte meg a munkát, amelyet rossz szemmel néztek az égiek. Elveszett a beruházásra szánt pénz, az első kivitelező csődbe ment. Másfél évvel később folytatódott az építkezés, amelyet hamarosan földrengés zavart meg: egy 30 méteres sza-kasz beomlott, többen meghaltak. Ám hosszú vajúdás után végül mégiscsak elkészült a csatorna, amely kora technikai csúcsteljesítményének számított. Nem zár-ták le zsilipekkel: a közúti forgalmat ún. merülő hidak-ra terelték. Vagyis ha a csatornához hajó érkezik, a hidak egyszerűen csak alábuknak. Nem véletlen, hogy mind György görög király, mind pedig Ferenc József osztrák császár és magyar király büszkén vett részt az 1893-as ünnepélyes átadáson. Az építkezés volumenét jól jelzik a számok: a 6345 méteres csatorna építése során 11 millió köbméter követ termeltek ki, 1200 tonna lőport és 450 tonna dinamitot használtak fel. A Korinthoszi-csatornán évente 11 ezer hajó halad át.
