Pappas auto hungary ltd. has opened a new unit at its albertfalva centre. It will make the transaction of picking up a car a real experience. the so-called "experience showroom" is an exclusively designed building on several floors. Clients are welcomed with a pleasant environment, up-to-date furnishings and the latest technical facilities. the three-storey building has been specially designed around a huge atrium. Customers receive their car on the ground floor and while waiting can admire a vehicle equipped for the season. on the first floor the buyer enters a tuning centre where the most modern equipment, special wheel trims and fine-tuning packages can be observed, since here a tuned mercedes-Benz with extras is on show. on the second floor customers can relax from the excitement of waiting for their car in a lounge furnished as a living room or on a terrace overlooking the danube. there is a mercedes-Benz boutique here offering a wide range of gifts, including watches, key-rings, men’s and women’s wear, stationary, accessories, model cars, suitcases and sunglasses.

tépelődött már valaha is azon, hogy meny-nyire vannak cége adatai biztonságban? Internetes betörés, vírusok, hackerek. hát persze, gondolhatja magában, sok-szor felmerült már a kérdés, és amit lehet, meg is tettünk a védelem érdekében. de vajon az eszébe jutott, hogy maga a szer-ver, amin az anyagai vannak, mennyire van biztonságban? ezen szinte soha nem gondolkodik senki, mivel természetes, hogy ha egy számítógépet bekapcsolnak, az – pláne ha van a cégnek egy rend-szergazdája – megy. Pedig nem így van! megeshet, ha a szervergéppel szomszé-dos konnektorba bedugnak egy porszí-vót, és azt bekapcsolják, az egész gép tönkremegy, és itt nem is a gép, a „vas” ami fontos és az igazi értéket képviseli, hanem az adat, a cég működését jelentő információ, amit tárolnak rajta.

KönYv • booK Bazar magyar By vIvIane ChoCasviviane Chocas, a French writer of hungarian origin, appeared at the 7th european First novel Festival during the Budapest International Book Festival with her autobiographically inspired short novel, which has an individual voice. although the book was primarily writ-ten with the French in mind, it is rather informative for hungarian readers. the story is quite simple and its style is pre-cise – what can a girl of hungarian origin born in France do if she wants to discover her origins, which are treated as a taboo subject? nothing is more obvious – she cooks and enjoys delicious dishes.(Palatinus Publishing House, 150 pages,

FerenCvárosI FesztIvála korábban Ferencvárosi ünnepi Játékok névre hallgató fesztivál az egyik legjelen-tősebb nyári rendezvénysorozat. a Bakáts téren felépített színpad Pest legnagyobb szabadtéri színpada, és jó ideje itt látható nyaranta Budapest egyik legnagyobb sza-badtéri operabemutatója is. a fesztiválon mindig van minimum egy templomi hang-verseny (idén haydn nelson miséje és mozart három motettája), egy-egy szabadtéri könnyű- és komolyzenei koncert, táncjáték vagy balettelőadás (27-én Frenák Pál és társulata), musical- vagy rock-produkció (22-én la mancha lovagja).(Budapest IX., Bakáts tér)

FerenCváros FestIval the festival, formerly called Ferencváros summer Festival, is one of the most excit-ing series of events in the summer. the Bakáts square open-air stage is the largest on the Pest side of Budapest and an impressive opera has been premiered here on several occasions over the years. the festival always hosts a minimum of one church concert (haydn’s nelson mass and three motets by mozart this year), open-air pop and classical concerts, a dance or ballet performance (the Pál Frenák Company on the 27th) and a musical or rock production (man of la mancha on the 22nd).(Bakáts Square, 9th district, Budapest)

mIsKolCI nemzetKözIoPeraFesztIvála Bartók+… nemzetközi operafesztiválon a kelet- és közép-európai operaprodukciókon kívül olyan vi-lágszerte ismert művészek koncertjei is hallhatók, akik a scala, a metropolitan és a Covent garden színpadain lépnek fel rendszeresen. Idén, az éven-te megújuló állandó Bartók-repertoár mellett a ren-dezvény a francia operairodalomból is szemezget. a moliére-kortárs lullytól a Bartók-kortárs Poulenc-ig közel kétszáz évet ölel át a június 13–24. között megrendezett fesztivál zenei programja.(Miskolci Nemzeti Színház, június 13–24.)

International opera Festival also features concerts of internationally famous art-ists who regularly perform on the stages of la scala, the metropolitan and Covent garden. this year, in addition to the annually changing Bartók repertoire, French operas have also been selected. the musi-cal programme of the festival, held between 13-24 June, encompasses nearly two hundred years from lully, who lived at the time of moliére, to Poulenc, a contemporary of Bartók.(Miskolc National Theatre, 13-24 June)

múzeumoK hosszú ÉJszaKáJaIdén ötödik alkalommal rendezik meg a múzeumok hosszú Éjszakáját a szent Iván-éjhez legközelebb eső szombaton. Június 23-án számos budapesti és vidéki múzeum tart nyitva késő éjszakába nyúlóan, s a kiállítá-sok mellett rengeteg programmal (a tárlatvezetéstől a koncerten át a táncelőadásig) várják a látogatókat, akik a fővárosban igénybe vehetik a múzeumok között közle-kedő különbuszt is.(Június 23., szombat)

Breuer was born in 1902 in Pécs. He left the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and his career as a painter when he was invited by Alfréd Forbáth to the joiner-workshop at the recently founded Bauhaus School in Weimar and study furniture design and manu-facture. The real breakthrough in his life took place when after a short period spent in Paris, in 1926 he became a teacher at the same workshop and inspired by the frame structure of Adler’s bicycle he designed his world-famous furniture constructed from flexible, cheap tubular frames. His first signifi-cant customer was Vasily Kandinsky, and he named his B3 type construction, still manufactured today, after him as the “Vasily chair”.The exhibition starts with early Bauhaus wooden furniture, then the legendary tubular-frame furni-ture is shown together with the original documents describing its design, and in the end we can see Breuer’s furniture from his later periods made using bent aluminium brackets and then from plywood.Breuer was not satisfied by design only. He wanted to build. In 1934 the Hungarian authorities refused to recognise his Bauhaus certificate as a real diplo-ma of architecture and he was not allowed to work as an independent designer. After a short period of living in different locations in Europe he accepted the invitation of his former master Walter Gropius to teach at Harvard University. Soon afterwards he became a celebrated and fashionable villa architect in the USA, and by the end of the fifties’ he was one of the world’s most recognised architects. In 1968 Time Magazine listed him among the thirteen most significant artists dominant in modern architecture. In the Ludwig Museum the retrospective exhibition can be seen until 2 September, and the twelve build-ing models of pure and beautiful design clearly dem-onstrate the connection between the bracket tubular structure and the concrete buildings radiating a floating impression due to the brackets.The material of the exhibition was selected and compiled by Vitra Design Museum situated in Weil am Rhein, Germany.

– Mióta foglalkozik a Demeter család szőlővel?– Valószínűleg már több generáció óta, de amit biztosan tudok, az az, hogy a dédszüleim 1898-ban telepítettek szőlőt Eger környé-kén, és azóta folyamatosan itt vagyunk. Én édesapámtól vettem át a pincét 1996-ban. Tizenévesen még egyáltalán nem akartam ezzel foglalkozni, olyankor még mások az értékek, más a tradíci-ók súlya. Aztán kezdtem külföldre járni, láttam, hogy ott hogyan gondolkodnak, és hogy milyen irányban kell fejlődnöm, ha a ha-gyományt akarom folytatni és építeni. Addigra már tudtam, hogy ez utóbbinak mekkora jelentősége van. Úgy éreztem, hogy nagyon komoly szemléletváltásra van szükség ahhoz, hogy ez a pince mű-ködjön: ha valaki bejön a pincédbe, akkor nemcsak a borodat adod el, hanem egy kicsit Magyarországot is. És ha nem ízlik neki, akkor nem azt mondja, hogy a te borod nem jó, hanem hogy a magyar borok nem jók. Az egész országot képviseljük – nagy felelősség ez.

– Hol van a magyar borok helye a vi-lágban?

– Jobb hely illetné meg, mint ahol vannak. Magyarország nagyon ki-csi ország: a világ bortermelésének 1,5%-át adja. Ez annyira kevés, hogy csak minőségben szabad gondol-kodni, mennyiségben nem. Viszont az adottságaink nagyon különle-gesek: különleges mikroklímáink vannak, különlegesek a talajok, amelyek akár 10-20 kilométeren-ként változnak. Ha megnézzük például az egri borokat és a tokaji borokat, nagyon különböznek egy-mástól, pedig csak 100 kilométer van a két hely között. Ettől külön-legesek, és ami különleges, annak értéke van a világon.

– Az a hír járja Önről, hogy kevés jobb marketinges van a borszakmában. Tehát mégis kell a jó bornak cégér?

– Az emberek egyre jobban ismerik a világot. Éppen azon nevettünk a minap, hogy 50 évvel ezelőtt egy faluban csak a második szomszéd-jukig láttak az emberek, de most itt a televízió, itt az internet, így már ellátnak a (világ)falu végéig is. Képesnek kell lennünk arra, hogy globálisan lássuk a dolgokat. A vi-lágon nagyon sok jó bor van, ezért jó pozíciót kell építenünk, el kell helyeznünk magunkat. Én „lázadó borásznak” hívom magam. Meg-próbáltam például olyan arculatot felépíteni, ami nem hagyományos: nincsenek cirádák, nincsenek régi motívumok. Ez persze nem jelen-ti azt, hogy szakítottam a múlttal. Igyekszem nagy hangsúlyt helyez-ni az internetes kommunikációra is, ami Magyarországon még nem jellemző. A marketinget rendkívül fontosnak tartom, hiszen a stílus-ban és minőségben az enyémhez hasonló francia borok ára jó más-félszer magasabb, és még csak nem is a legdrágább borokról beszélek. Az ismertség rendkívül fontos ami-kor bort választanak az emberek, ehhez pedig marketing kell. És még egy dolog, amiért lázadó vagyok: nem gondolom, hogy Magyaror-szág a világ közepe. Sokat utazom külföldre és próbálom hasznosítani azt, amit ott jónak látok. Ami nem jelenti azt, hogy utánzom őket.

where they are at today. Hun-gary is a very small country accounting for 1.5% of the world’s wine production. This is so small that we must think only in terms of quality, not quantity. Yet our natural conditions are exceptional. We have unparalleled microclimates and the soil is very special, which may even vary every 10 or 20 kilometres. If we compare wines from Eger and Tokaj they are very different from one another, although they are produced only 100 kilometres apart. That is what makes them exceptional, and what is unique is highly valued in the world.

Rumour has it that there aren’t many better at marketing in the wine trade than you are. Does a good wine still need a bush?People increasingly know the world. We were laughing the other day saying that 50 years ago people only saw as far as their next door but one neighbour in a village, but now there is television and the internet, so they can see to the end of the (world) village. We have to be able to see things in their globality. There are many good wines in the world, therefore we must reach a good position and establish ourselves. I call myself a ‘rebel winemaker’. I have tried to generate an image which is not conventional, without any

of the old paraphernalia or trappings. This doesn’t mean, of course, that I’ve broken with the past. I try to lay great emphasis on Internet communication, which is not yet characteristic in Hungary. I find marketing extremely important since the price of French wines similar to the style and quality of my own is one and a half times higher, and I’m not even talking about the most expensive ones. The name is very important for people when they choose wine and that requires marketing. And there is another reason why I’m a rebel. I don’t consider Hungary to be the centre of the world. I travel abroad a lot and try to utilise what I think is good there, which doesn’t mean I imitate.

You said recently you wanted to undermine the misconceptions concerning Eger wines.For a long time Bull’s Blood wines were not consumed because they were acidy. However, the point is that Eger wine should not be drunk young because what is its disadvantage when young, for example its acids, will become an advantage in the long run. Very many wine regions would be happy to have wines with such acid content. I mature each red wine in the cellar for a mini-mum of three years – I don’t put them on the market until then.

How long has the Demeter family worked with grapevines?Probably for several generations, but what I know for sure is that in 1898 my great- grandparents planted grapevines in the environs of Eger and we have been active here ever since. I took over the winery from my father in 1996. In my teens I had no desire to become a winemaker. At that age values and traditions are viewed in a different way. Then I began going abroad and saw how people thought there and realised in what direction I had to develop if I wanted to continue and shape the tradition. By then I understood the significance and meaning of tradition. I thought a serious change of view was needed for this winery to operate – when someone enters your cellar you sell not only your wine but also Hungary to a certain extent. If he doesn’t take to the wine he won’t say your wine is no good but that Hungarian wines are not appealing. So we represent the whole country – it’s a great responsibility.

How do you see the position of Hungarian wines in the world?They deserve a better place than

A bordeaux-i nemzetközi borversenyen a négy nyer-tes borom közül kettő leány-ka volt, ami igazi magyar fajta. – Mi a kedvence?– Sok kedvencem van, de eléggé kékfrankos párti va-gyok, az olyan egri bor: tö-mör, megvan a maga lágy-sága, bársonyossága, de benne van a borban a sav játékossága is. Bár lágy, ked-ves és behízelgő, ott van egy pici savas érzete is, ami ke-rekké teszi.

– Egy borász szokott mást is inni a boron kívül?

– Abszolút! Sört iszom, egy borásznak kötelező. Nagy sörkedvelő vagyok, de legin-kább a cseh sörök imádója. Látja, az sem véletlen, hogy pont azon a környéken talál-ták ki a sört.

– Folytatódni fog a borász tradíció a családban?

– Bízzunk benne. Hol-napután lesz egyéves az első gyermekem, aki lány, de vannak női borászok is! Úgy

építettem fel min-dent, hogy a bor a szívem és a lelkem, de ráerőltetni nem fogom. De még ha el is adom, az biz-tos, hogy veszek egy hektár szőlőt meg egy kis pincét. Mert ezt nem lehet megszakítani: ha az ember egyszer csinálja, akkor nem tudja abba-hagyni. Bor nélkül nem lehet élni.

And, let’s be honest, Hungarian types are needed. I exchange the international types like Chardonnay, Rheinriesling or Cabernet, for Hungarian ones like Kadarka, Kékfran-kos and Turán. As we are Hungarians we should have our Hungarian wines. At the international competition in Bordeaux two of my four award-winning wines were Le-ányka, which is a real Hungarian type. It also shows that attention is required and that in Hungary Hungarian flavours must be found. For example, if I go to Vienna I will surely choose Wiener Schnitzel and not goulash soup. Already 50 kilometres from the border authentically good goulash cannot be made because everything has its own place. It’s no accident that Hungary had Kékfrankos and Kadarka for several centuries because that is what fits here. Another misconception concerns sweet wines. Many people come to the row of cellars and look for Medoc because they think that Eger wines are sweet, although sweet red wines have never been heard of in most countries. It’s as if I took a glass of dry wine and add a lump of sugar. That is what ruins the image and market of Eger wine – it seems a good idea at present, but what’s going to happen in ten or fifteen years?

Do you have a favourite?I like many wines, though I am rather a fan of Kékfrankos. It’s a real Eger wine – stout, velvety with its own softness, but also with the playfulness of the acid. Although it is soft, kind and flattering it also has that bit of acidy feel to it, which together make it rounded.

Does a winemaker like yourself drink anything apart from wine?Absolutely. I drink beer – a winemaker must. I am a great beer enthusiast and very keen on Czech beers. You see, it’s not by chance that those beers are produced exactly there.

Will the tradition of winemaking continue in the family?Let’s hope so. My first child will be one year old the day after tomorrow. She is a girl, but there are women winemakers, too. I have built up everything such that wine is in my heart and soul, but I will not force her into it. But even if I sell up, I will certainly buy two and a half acres of vineyard and a small cellar somewhere. You see, it cannot be stopped. Once you are doing it you cannot quit. You cannot live without wine.

Antoni Plácid Gaudí i Cornet, vagyis Antoni (katalánul), illetve Antonio Gaudí 155 éve: 1852. júni-us 25-én született Reusban, a spa-nyolországi Katalóniában. Korai épületeire jellemzők a mór, majd a gótikus stílus arab–perzsa, illet-ve a francia neogótika elemei, ám jellemzően az organikus építészet képviselője. Legtöbb művéhez ő maga készítette a belsőépítészeti munkákat, bútorokat, sőt, míves csempéket is. Barcelona Gaudí katalán építészetének legismer-tebb színhelye, épületei, köztük a Parc Güell-ben lévő háza (Casa de Gaudí) a leglátogatottabb neveze-tességek közé tartoznak. A Gaudí-művek közül hét került fel a világ-örökség-listára.Világhírű épülete a Sagrada Família temploma. A keleti szárny 1891 és 1900 között, a nyugati szárny 1954 és 1985 között épült. Az ország egyik leghíresebb, leg-népszerűbb, dinasztiateremtő írója, Karinthy Frigyes 120 éve: 1887. június 25-én született Budapesten. Már 11 évesen ír: színműveket, kalandos történeteket, verses mesé-ket; emellett naplót vezetett. 15 éves volt, amikor a Magyar Képes Világ folytatásokban közölte a Nászutazás a Föld középpontján keresztül című regényét. Érettségi után matemati-ka–fizika szakon, bölcsész karon és sebészeten hallgatott egyetemi elő-adásokat. Noha diplomát soha sem szerzett, egész életében élénk érdek-lődéssel és feltétlen tisztelettel for-dult a tudományok felé. 1906-ban Az Újság című lap munkatársa lett. A következő években sorra jelentek meg novellái, paródiái, humoros írásai a különböző budapesti lapok-ban, de az ismertséget az Így írtok ti című paródiakötete, amelyben a korszak valamennyi íróját utánozza a csak rá jellemző humorral hozza meg számára a teljes ismertséget. Frigyes Karinthy, one of the most well-known, popular and dynas-ty-creating writers of Hungary, was born in Budapest 120 years ago on 25 June 1887. As early as 11, apart from keeping a diary, he was already writing plays, adventure stories and rhymed fables. He was 15 when his novel

A Honeymoon Journey through the Centre of the Earth was seri-alised by Magyar Képes Világ (Hungarian Picture World). After finishing grammar school, he read mathematics and physics, studied at the faculty of humani-ties and attended lectures on sur-gery. Although he never obtained a university degree, he was deep-ly interested in and had great respect for science all his life. He joined the staff of Az Újság (The News) in 1906. In the following years he wrote numerous short stories, parodies and humor-ous pieces for various Budapest papers, but he really became famous for his collection of par-odies That’s How You Write, in which he imitated all the writers of his age with his unique char-acteristic humour.He had two sons by his two wives. Gábor Karinthy became a poet, while Ferenc (Cini) continued his father’s legacy, becoming a noted playwright and writer. (His son, Márton Karinthy, is today a writ-er and theatre director.)In 1936 Frigyes Karinthy was operated on for a brain tumour by Herbert Olivecrona in Stockholm. His novel A Journey Round My Skull is about the surgery and generated interest throughout the world. He died of a stroke in 1938. Karinthy wrote an incredible number of novels, plays, short sto-ries, parodies, sketches and poems. Among his translations perhaps his most popular work is A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, which is generally thought to be better than the original. Frigyes Karinthy was known and loved by an entire country and all of Hungary was concerned for him during his brain surgery. Soon after the whole country mourned him.Once, when he was walking along the street an omnibus stopped for him and the driver asked, “Mister Karinthy, may I take you somewhere?” What could characterise his popularity more, particularly as there was no television at the time?

Jeruzsálemben, 1961. április 13-án megkezdődött Adolf Eichmann pere. A volt SS-alezredes a Harmadik Birodalomban a zsidókérdés „végső megoldásának” volt a felelőse. Eichmann nyomaira hosszú évek után bukkant az izraeli titkosrend-őrség, a Moszad. Autóval egy titkos, előre kiválasztott házba szállították Eichmannt, aki mint egy fegyel-mezett katona, úgy tűrte elrablását. Egyetlen valami érdekelte, mi van a kisfiával, Hansival? Tíz nappal később az izraeli sportolókat szállító EL-AL repülőgép pilóta-egyenruhá-jában csempészték ki Argentínából. A per végén 1961. december 15-én halálra ítélték, majd 1962. júni-us 1-én Izraelben felakasztották. Elhamvasztott porait a Vörös tenger-be szórták, hogy nyoma se maradjon ezen a földön ennek az emberbőrbe bújt szörnyetegnek.A pernek óriási nemzetközi vissz-hangja lett. A bosszún túl a legfonto-sabb eredmény az volt, hogy ismét a figyelem középpontjába állította a holokausztot. A több mint egyéves per során túlélők megrendítő tanú-vallomásai hangzottak el, a világ valójában ennek a pernek a révén szembesült a nácik rémtetteivel.Eichmann golyóálló üvegkalitká-ban ülte végig a tárgyalást, egy percig sem tanúsított megbánást. Hatmillió életért hogyan kell bocsánatot kérni? A vád minden pontjára így válaszolt: „a vád értel-mében nem bűnös”, mert az ink-

Népünk legszentebb imája, minden hithű zsidó halálos ágyán mondott hitnyilatkozat: „Halld, ó, Izrael, mi Urunk Isten, az egyetlen Úr…” Remegni kezdtem dühöm-ben.

– Eichmann, van magának fogalma egyáltalán arról, hogy mit jelentenek ezek a szavak?

– Ja – mondta szívélyesen, és elmondta a precíz német fordítást.

– Talán néhány másik szó is ismerősnek tűnik – kérdeztem –, Aba? Ima? Beugrik ezekről valami?

– Aba, Ima – ismételte, emlékeze-tében kutatva –, nem, nem emlék-szem. Mit jelentenek?

– Apu, anyu. Ezt sikították a zsidó gyerekek, amikor a gázkam-rába menet kitépték őket szüleik kezéből…

Képtelen voltam türtőztetni magam:

– A nővérem kisfia ugyanany-nyi idős volt, mint a maga fia. Ő is szőke volt és kék szemű. És maga megölte.

Igazi zavarba jött a felismerés-től.

– Igen – mondta végül. – De zsidó volt, nem?

The trial of Adolph Eichmann began in Jerusalem on 13 April 1961. The former SS Lieutenant

Colonel had been in charge of the ‘final solution’ of the Jewish ques-tion in the Third Reich. The Israeli secret police, Mossad, tracked down Eichmann after many years. His home was found in a suburb of Buenos Aires where he lived under a false name with his wife and three children. After several months of preparation Mossad agent Peter Z. Malkin was appoint-ed to capture Eichmann. He bore his kidnapping as a disciplined soldier, showing interest only in what was happening to his son, Hansi. Ten days later he was smug-gled out of Argentina in a pilot’s uniform on board an EL-AL plane carrying Israeli sportsmen. On 15 December 1961 he was sentenced to death and hung in Israel on 1 June the following year. His cre-mated ashes were scattered in the Red Sea so that no trace on earth would be left of the monster in human disguise.The trial received huge interna-tional publicity. Its most important accomplishment besides revenge was to re-focus attention on the Holocaust. During the trial numer-ous items of evidence were revealed and astonishing testimonies of sur-vivors were heard. It was this trial which confronted the world with the atrocities of the Nazis.Eichmann sat in a bullet-proof glass cage throughout the trial and did not show any remorse. How is one to apologise for the lives of six million people? In his answers to each point of the pros-ecution he said, “not guilty in the sense of the prosecution”, argu-ing that the incriminating actions reflected “acts of state”, which no other state has the right to judge. “You must understand,” said Eichmann, “times were differ-ent then compared to now. I was a soldier. Just like you, I also had to obey commands.” He pon-dered for a moment. “Just think, I learnt Hebrew with a rabbi in Berlin. Unfortunately I have for-gotten nearly all I learnt.”

“Why did you learn it?”“No one can understand the Jewish people’s troubles without under-standing its original language. I remember a prayer the rabbi taught me. Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad ...” The most sacred prayer of our people, the declaration of faith recited by every faithful Jew on his death bed, “Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.” I began shaking with anger.

“Eichmann, have you the slight-est idea what those words mean?”

“Ja,” he said amicably and he gave the exact German translation.

“Some other words may seem familiar,” I said and asked, “Aba? Ima? Do you happen to remem-ber them?”

“Aba, Ima,” he repeated searching his memory. “No, I don’t. What do they mean?”

“Dad and mum. Those were the words Jewish children screamed when they were torn from their parents’ hands on the way to the gas chambers…”I was unable to hold myself back.

“My sister’s son was the same age as yours. He was also blond with blue eyes. And you killed him.”Showing some recognition, he was really embarrassed.He said in the end, “Yes, but he was Jewish, wasn’t he?”

most visited sights. The World Heritage List contains seven of his designs.The Church of Sagrada Família is Gaudí’s world famous mo- nument. Its eastern wing was built between 1891 and 1900, the western wing being construct-ed from 1954 to 1985. According to the original plans, the high-est tower among the ones still under construction will be 170 metres tall. When finished it will be the world’s largest basilica. Like organic architec-ture itself, which was not fully understood by the twentieth century, the church is being built for the future. According to Gaudí, “the material will reveal itself in the wealth of its astral curves and it will be like a vision of Paradise.”

On 7 June 1926 Gaudí was hit by a tram. He was so badly injured that he was not recognised for some time and was treated as an unknown person. He died three days after the accident and on 12 June was buried, with a papal licence, in the crypt of Sagrada Família. Since he himself directed the construction of his main opus, only a few usable plans and notes were left; the majority of those as well as the models were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Contemporary architects are using computer aided design for the statical plans of the fantastic sizes and enormous spaces. Gaudí himself estimated it would need 200 years to accomplish the cathe-dral. If that time began with the laying of the foundation stone in 1882, there are still 75 years left.

Az út a Malév és a Qantas légitársaság kö-zös járatának köszönhetően immár jelen-tősen lerövidült, Budapestről egy gyors thaiföldi átszállással lehet közvetlenül Ausztráliába jutni. lépve a vonatból egy pillanatra megszé-dül az ember, azonnal és hirtelen az ölé-be huppan a város: itt van a kompkikötő, a busz- és a vonatvégállomás, de ugyanitt található a híres Operaház, az öblöt át-ívelő híddal, a „Harbour Bridge”-dzsel.A „Rocks”, amely Sydney fennmaradt tör-ténelmi városnegyede, igazi kontraszt a modern világvárosban: XIX. századi kis házak sorakoznak néhány száz méteres körzetben a hatalmas felhőkarcolók lába-inál, pár perc sétára az Operaháztól.A Bondi Beach-re érdemes busszal ki-menni. A belvárostól háromnegyed órányi útra levő homokos tengerpart a célpontja azoknak a helyi fiataloknak is, akik sorban kapaszkodnak fel a buszra, hogy munka vagy suli után még szörföz-zenek egyet. After a nearly twenty-hour flight, about half a dozen films and admiring two sunrises we arrive in Syd-ney, the city with the largest population on the Aus-tralian continent. Although during the long journey we often ponder whether a country deserves so much travelling, the following day in the glittering sun-shine or bathing in the waves of the Pacific Ocean, an emphatic ‘yes’ is the only answer. Moreover, we would be willing to have travelled longer.Due to the Malév-Quantas joint flight the jour-ney has significantly shortened, with just a quick change in Thailand between Hungary and Aus-tralia. The trip, nicknamed ‘the Kangaroo route’ has been reduced by a third. On arrival the sight of people in shorts and knee-high socks busying them-

selves on the airport tarmac is a bit unusual to the European eye and we are also amused by the dogs sniffing our suitcases for food in the arrivals hall. A „Hi, how are you?” (Szia, hogy vagy?) már-már köszönésként is használatos.Egy thai éttermemben kötünk ki Bondion, ahol érkezésünk után kérés nélkül egy kancsó víz ke-rül – ingyen – az asztalra, de azon már kissé mi is elcsodálkozunk, mikor kiderül, hogy B. Y. O. (Bring Your Own) étteremről van szó, azaz ha szeretnénk bort vagy sört is inni a vacsorához, azt hozhatjuk magunkkal is. A pincér készsé-gesen berakja a hűtőbe a vendégek által hozott bort, majd poharat ad hozzá, és a legnagyobb ter-mészetességgel szolgálja fel a vacsorához, némi dugópénz fejében…Bár nagyon élvezzük Sydneyt, Ausztrália igazi csodái mégsem a városokban várnak ránk, ha-nem a természetben. A közlekedésben „balra tarts” van, de az első ötszáz méter megtétele után ez már természetesnek tűnik. A rengeteg körfor-galom és az egyértelmű táblák miatt nehéz té-veszteni. Sydneyt elhagyva észak felé haladunk a Csendes-Óceán partján. A városok közti távolság olykor meghaladja a száz kilométert is, anélkül, hogy akár csak egy benzinkúttal is találkoznánk. port, the bus and train terminals are here, as is the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge, which spans the bay. The remaining historical quar-ter of Sidney, the Rocks, is a true contrast in the modern city. Small, 19th-century houses line the streets in an area of a few hundred square metres by the feet of the skyscrapers, a short walk from the Opera House. It is worth taking the bus to Bondi Beach. This sandy beach, three-quarters of an hour from the city centre, is where local young peo-ple are also heading. They board the bus to go surfing after work or school. The mood is absolutely easy-going. A few jovial hippies also get on, with a view to enjoy-ing the sunshine and the waves together with managers, students, locals and tourists. People are open, tolerant and ex-tremely friendly in this multicul-tural country. If we ask a ticket seller at the bus stop or a waiter in a cafe to show us the way they will soon ask how we like it there, where we come from, how long we are staying and what our plans are in Australia. “Hi, how are you?” is used almost as a form of greeting.We end up in a Thai restaurant on the Bondi where a jug of water is immediately placed on our table, free of charge, but what surprises

It is left-hand-drive in Australia, but after five hundred metres it al-ready becomes natural. It is not easy to miss the way due to the many roundabouts and clear road signs. Leaving Sydney be-

hind we drive along the Pacific coastline towards the north. The distance between towns often exceeds a hundred kilometres without even seeing a petrol sta-tion. Signs warn us to stop for a rest regularly, since the long stretches of road dull alertness. So, in the Australian way, we en-joy a picnic on the beach.The national food, fish and chips, is superb in its simplicity and freshness. A family barbecue is un-derway on the benches next to us. A true OZ (that is Aussi, as they call themselves) spends the time outdoors and is a real barbe-cue virtuoso. A barbecue can be found in nearly every Australian

The kangaroos dare to come out from the cover of the eucalyptuses after dusk and therefore driving in the country is not recommended after dark unless the front of the vehicle has a steel kangaroo grid. We turn into one of the many mo-tels situated by the roadside. They are somewhere between the quality of a hotel and a German guesthouse. Reasonable in price, each room has air conditioning, a video and a DVD player. They are clean and safe, and after an exhausting drive we can even dive into the pool, a facility usually offered by motels.As we proceed northwards, the flora gradually becomes sub-tropical with the result that we can experience somewhat surrealistic images, such as a herd of cat-tle grazing by banana trees. Meanwhile we cross into Queensland, itself four times as big in size as the United King-dom. The words ‘Sunshine State’ feature on the car number plates – here the sun really shines almost all year round.Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland with its more than a million residents, practically consists of family houses with gardens, apart from its business centre of skyscrapers standing on a few square

kilometres. Thus its geographical area competes with that of Los Angeles. Why shouldn’t the Australians live in houses? Land is plentiful. Otherwise Brisbane is a significant tourism centre, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast being nearby with their resorts, sandy beaches, apart-ment blocks with sea views, atmospheric cafes, shopping centres, aqua parks and fun fairs, numerous golf courses and an infinite number of surfers.

“Slip, Slop, Slap!” we were told when we inquired about the strangely dressed children in long-sleeved swimming cos-tumes up to their neck and with caps splashing around in the sea. “Wear a T-shirt, use sun cream and have a hat on” – that is what the widely advertised health campaign essentially says from as early as childhood. Although the ozone hole no longer threatens Australia, protec-tion against the sun must be taken abso-lutely seriously here. Otherwise you can become painfully sunburnt with blis-ters. It is no wonder that local chemists primarily stock suntan lotion of factor 30, f15 being rarely sold. The enormous Australia Zoo, established by the most well-known Australian, croc-odile hunter Steve Irwin, who tragically passed away, is situated on Sunshine Coast. Almost all the Australian species of animals can be found here. We can stroke kangaroos, have our photographs

taken with a koala bear on our lap, and there are crocodiles, wombats, dingoes, emus, tortoises, birds and several other animals.Near the northern end of Sunshine Coast there is the town of Gladstone, which is noted as the be-ginning point of the Great Barrier Reef. This, the largest coral reef on Earth and a World Heritage site, is 2600 km long and consists of nearly three thou-sand individual reefs and nine hundred islands of varying sizes. On the Reef, as the locals say, we can swim among millions of colourful fish and corals and admire the undersea world. Most travellers get as far as Cairns on the west-ern coast via Brisbane, but real adventurers take themselves to the interior of the country, to the homeland of the indigenous aboriginals, mostly for no other reason than to see the sun rise from the top of Uluru (Red Rock) or Ayers Rock.The Outback, that vast red desert, the Kakadu National Park, the Melbourne trams, the Twelve Apostles, the wine growing regions of southern Australia, Canberra, the capital of the nation with its parliament buildings, both old and new, the black swans of Perth and the green hills of Tasmania – these are just some of the most well-known sights for which one craves to return to this wonderful continent again and again.

Van itt föld bőven… Brisbane amúgy igen je-lentős idegenforgalmi központ, közelségében talál-hatók a Gold Coast (Aranypart) és a Sunshine Coast (Napospart) üdülőközpontjai, homokos tengerpart-okkal, tengerre néző apartman-házakkal, hangu-latos kávézókkal, bevásárlóközpontokkal, aqua- és vidámparkokkal, számtalan golfpályával és szörfö-sökkel minden mennyiségben.Slip, Slop, Slap! – válaszolták érdeklődésünkre ezt az igencsak nehezen lefordítható jelmondatot, mikor furcsának találtuk a tenger hullámaiban nyakig érő, hosszú ujjú fürdőruhában és sapkában pancsoló gyerekeket. „Húzz trikót, kend magad napkrémmel és nyomj egy sapkát a fejedbe”: gyakorlatilag ez a lé-nyege a már kisgyerekkorban is széles körben tuda-tosított egészségügyi kampánynak. Bár az ózonlyuk már réges-régen nem fenyegeti Ausztráliát, a napsü-tés elleni védekezést itt nagyon komolyan kell venni. Húsz-harminc perc alatt hólyagosra lehet égni véde-kezés nélkül, és ezek után az sem csoda, hogy a helyi drogériákban a 30-as faktorú krém a leggyakoribb, a 15-ös már-már ritkaságnak számít.A Sunshine Coaston találhatjuk Ausztrália egyik leg-ismertebb arca, a tragikus sorsú Steve Irwin kroko-dilvadász hatalmas állatkertjét, az Australia Zoo-t. Ebben gyakorlatilag valamennyi ausztrál állatfaj megtalálható egy helyen: kengurukat simogathatunk, koalákkal az ölünkben fényképeztethetjük le magun-kat, de vannak krokodilok, wombatok, dingók, emuk, teknősök, madarak és számtalan más állat is.Nem messze a Sunshine Coast északi végétől fekszik Gladstone városa, amely egyebek között arról neve-zetes, hogy itt kezdődik a Great Barrier Reef (Nagy Korallzátony). A Föld legnagyobb és egyben a világ-örökség részét képező, közel háromezer szirtből és kilencszáz kisebb-nagyobb szigetből álló korallzá-tonya 2600 km hosszú. A „Zátony”-on – ahogy a he-lyiek hívják – milliónyi színes hal és korallok között úszhatunk és csodálhatjuk a tengeralatti világot. Ilyen Brazíliában a riói karnevál, Né-metországban a müncheni sörfesztivál, Olaszor-szágban a velencei karnevál vagy Pamplonában a bikafuttatás.A magyaroknak is megvannak a maguk nemzeti tradíciói. Ezek közül az egyik igen régen és mé-lyen gyökerező hagyományunk népünk lovas kultúrája. S bár legújabb korunkban erről mint-ha már mi magunk is megfeledkeznénk, most egy nagyszerű új kezdeményezés emlékeztet minket és a világot a magyar lovasok, a magyar huszárok hírnevére.Különleges fesztiválra invitáljuk Önöket, a Nemzeti Vágtára, amelynek célja, hogy felelevenítse a nem-zeti lovas hagyományokat, hogy egy nagyszabású kulturális fesztivált hozzon létre, hogy a magyar városok ünnepe legyen. NATIoNAL gALLoPEach country has its own national traditions that are soaked into the culture of the given people so deter-mining its general image. Examples of such traditions are the Rio Carnival in Brazil, the Munich Beer Festi-val in Germany, the Carnival of Venice in Italy or the running of the bulls in Pamplona.Hungarians have their own national traditions as well. One of our very oldest of traditions with very deep roots is connected to our culture of horse riding. Al-though in the present day we ourselves seem to have forgotten about it, there is now a great new initiative to remind both us and the world of the reputation of Hungarian riders and hussars.We invite you to a special festival, the National Gallop, the aim of which is to revive national horse riding tra-ditions and to organise a large-scale cultural festival involving Hungarian towns. The National Gallop is a large-scale horserace with a historic atmosphere based on Hungarian traditions, a cultural event aimed at both preserving and creating traditions at the same time.At the National Gallop horses and horse-riders nomi-nated by Hungarian towns and counties can measure themselves with each other on 22 September in Buda-pest, on Heroes’ Square, which is our national memori-al site, in a spectacular and magnificent environment. All towns and all districts of Budapest can nominate one horse and one rider. The riders will wear clothes representing Hungarian hussar traditions. The total amount of prizes awarded will be 50 million forints (EUR 200,000) and the main prize 30 million forints, (EUR 120,000) which will be awarded to the town whose rider wins the final race.At the same time, between 20-23 September the towns participating in the National Gallop will be provided with the opportunity to present themselves in the scope of a four-day national festival named “The Vil-lage of Towns” and all towns will introduce their typi-cal characteristic features, tastes, products, culture and customs. At the Village of Towns the participants may also entertain visitors as their guests to make them-selves attractive and interesting with their own pro-grammes. The Village of Towns will be a special tourist event, a family programme lasting for several days and also a country-image festival, the most exciting event and peak of which will be the National Gallop.

So it is no accident that an increasing number of workplaces are offering monthly passes to the sports centre, and even building gyms for their staff, as it is in their interest for their staff to remain healthy.So it may happen soon that we get a step closer to the solution and the gym will move to the office. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Minne-sota have created a device that is a cross between an office desk and a treadmill and makes it possible to exercise your muscles on the rubber treadmill under the desk while working at your computer. While sitting at a desk you hardly burn off more energy than 70 calories an hour, while at the so-called vertical workstation you burn 200. So those of you who spend just two hours a day at the new treadmill could get rid of even 30 superfluous kilos a year. Additionally you don’t have to spend a fortune on going to the gym frittering away your precious free time, as you can go training in the office while you are at work.There is already a lot of interest in the new desk, which is understand-able as the United States on its own spends more than 100 billion dollars a year on illnesses caused by obesity. And aside from its usefulness it is not a negligible aspect that all the overweight people who had tried out the desk enjoyed working and jogging at the same time so much that they would have gladly continued to use the workstation. heRÓdeS SÍRjAVilágszenzáció: Ehud Netzer, az izraeli Héber Egye-tem professzora bejelentette, hogy megtalálta Nagy Heródes király sírját. A sírra Jeruzsálemtől délre, a Júdeai-sivatagban, Heródes palotájának, a Heródiumnak a feltárása közben bukkantak. A ku-tatók már korábban is sejtették, hogy valahol itt kell keresni a Krisztus előtt 4-ben, Jerikóban elhunyt ki-rály nyughelyét, ugyanis Josephus Flavius A Zsidó Háborúról szóló művében erre tett utalást.A Heródium Jeruzsálemtől 12 kilométerre délre, a Holt-tengerhez vezető út mentén, egy 758 méter magas dombtetőn épült. Flaviusnál azt olvashat-juk, hogy ezt az erődöt Heródes Kr. e. 40-ben, a pártusok felett aratott győzelmének emlékére építtette. Két jól elkülöníthető részt emeltek, egy körkörös erődöt a domb tetején, és valamivel északabbra egy uralkodói épületkomplexumot. A külső fal átmérője mintegy 62 méter lehetett. Az erőd maga eredetileg 30 méter magas volt 7 szinttel, amelyből kettő a föld alatt helyezkedett el. heRod’S gRAVeA world sensation! Professor Ehud Netzer of Israel’s Hebrew University has announced that he has located the grave of King Herod the Great. The burial site was found dur-ing excavations of Herodium, Herod’s pal-ace south of Jerusalem in the Judean desert. Previously archaeologists had already sus-pected that the resting place of the king, who died in Jericho in 4 BC, might be found in this location, given a reference in the noted work of Josephus Flavius, History of the Jewish War.Herodium was built on a 758 metre high hilltop along the road leading to the Dead Sea, 12 kilometres from Jerusalem. Flavius writes that Herod had the fortress built in memory of his victory over the Parthians in 40 BC. Two clearly separated parts were constructed – a circular fortress on the top of the hill and a building complex for the ruler somewhat to the north. The diameter of the external wall must have been about 62 metres. The fortress itself was originally 30 metres high with seven levels, of which two were underground. In four directions towers were built on the walls, the tallest of these being the eastern one with a diameter of 18 metres. Since Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Masada fortress to the east were all within eyesight, in the case of danger sig-nals could be sent with the help of mirrors.For a long time Ehud Netzer and his team believed they would find Herod’s grave along the former walls of the building. Then a geophysicist’s technical test called attention to the central part where the out-lines of a shaft-like formation were detect-ed. That was where they found the looted grave, the sarcophagus broken into pieces and without the bones. Herod ruled in Jerusalem between 37 and 4 BC. At the time the territory was already under the protectorate of Rome, and al-though Herod could have no independent foreign policy the empire did not interfere in his internal affairs. Herod’s name is as-sociated with several huge constructions, including that of the New Temple in Jerusa-lem. He also features in the New Testament in connection with the story of the three wise men who brought him news about the birth of Christ. Fearing that Jesus would be a threat to his power, Herod ordered the killing of all the children in Bethlehem un-der the age of three.

A különlegesség érzését csak növeli, amikor először ül be a bérelt autójába és észreveszi, hogy nincs előtte kormány. Akkor kicsit za-vartan, kicsit ijedten átcsusszan a másik oldal-ra, és viszonylag rövid időn belül megszokja, hogy sebességváltáskor ne az ablakot nyissa

Most people, especially when they come from a land-locked country like myself, will sigh with satisfaction as soon as they arrive on an island and see palm trees – at last I am on holiday! And when the exit is signed ‘exodos’ it is absolutely sure that some ex-ceptional place has been reached.This feeling of exceptionality is further in-creased when I sit in the rented car for the first time and notice there is no steering wheel. A bit embarrassed and alarmed I slide over to the other side and within a rel-atively short time get used to not opening the window when changing gears and firm-ly sticking to the side where at home a po-liceman would ban me from driving. When I reach the hotel and slump in an armchair the strained muscles in my shoulders relax and it is only then that I realise how hard I was clinging to the wheel. But that signals the end of my trials. After all, this is Cyprus, the island of Aphrodite, love and eternal spring, and why worry about how I man-aged to cover the last 30 kilometres. I hap-pily lean back and think “Yes, I’ve resolved that, too. The holiday may begin.”In the morning as I draw the curtains the sun is shining brightly, making the already snow-white houses look even whiter. Cities, of course, are like cities anywhere – cars, traffic and familiar shops. Yet in Cyprus they have retained much of their past. In the capital, Nicosia, for example, public trans-port does not quite work. Buses run, only not too regularly, but in return the fares are reasonable. However, there are no trams or underground trains and rumour has it that it will remain so for a while. Perhaps

De ezzel véget is értek a megpróbáltatások, hiszen ez itt Ciprus, Afrodité, a szerelem és az örök ta-vasz szigete, ugyan kinek jutna eszébe azon aggódni, hogy hogyan is úszta meg az elmúlt 30 kilométert? Bol-dogan hátradől és azt gondolja: igen, ezt is megoldottam. Kezdődhet a vakáció.Reggel, ahogy elhúzom a függönyt, ragyog a napsütés, s ettől még fehérebbnek tűnnek az egyébként is hófehér házak. A nagyvárosokban természetesen minden úgy zajlik, mint a többi nagyvárosban: autók, forgalom, is-merős boltok – a ciprusi nagyvárosok mégis sokat meg-őriztek érintetlenségükből. Nicosiában, a fővárosban például csak ímmel-ámmal működik a tömegközleke-dés: buszok még csak-csak járnak – állítólag nem túl rendszeresen, de cserében nem is drágán –, viszont se villamos, se metró, és a hírek szerint ez így is marad még jó darabig. Talán így van ez rendjén: egy 5000 éves város nem adja meg magát olyan könnyen. A forgalmas bevásárlóutcában, világszerte ismert híres márkák bolt-jai előtt fejkendős néni kínálja a portékáját: paradicso-mot, mogyorót, gyümölcsöket – az egyikről csak annyit sikerül kiderítenem, hogy „nagyon finom” (tényleg az), a narancsokon pedig, amikor kibontom a zacskót, még

Csak a turisták róják rendü-letlenül az utcákat, néha vizespalackot húz-nak elő, és megpróbálják összepasszítani az utcanévtáblák feliratait a térképük neveivel. A déli csendben még jobban megmutatkozik a város, nem takarják el az emberek, most ő a főszereplő, és ettől mintha visszaugrottunk volna egy másik századba. Semmi kétség, hogy ezek a házak már nagyon régen állnak itt, és pontosan így, ahogy most is. A népte-lenségük ellenére mégsem tűnnek halottnak, inkább mintha az estére töltekeznének fel. És valóban: amikor kicsit hűvösebb lesz az idő, a város megtelik élettel, mindenki kimegy az utcára, elfoglalják a padokat, a parkoló autók motorháztetejét, a rutinosabbaknak saját szé-kük van a házuk előtt. This spectacle is what makes people who come from the far north smile to themselves.By noon it is boiling hot and the streets sud-denly empty. Only tourists wander around persistently, sometimes pulling out a water bottle while trying to match the street names with those on their maps. In the midday qui-et the city reveals itself even more. It is not shrouded by people. Now it has the leading role, taking us back into another century. No doubt, these houses have been here for a long

time, standing exactly as they do now. De-spite the absence of people, they do not seem dead, rather as if they were preparing for the evening. Indeed, when it cools down the city fills with life. Everyone is out in the streets. People occupy the benches as well as the bon-nets of parked cars, while those in the know have their own chairs in front of their houses. Small children play tag as if it was not 10 at night – they deserve a bit of evening fun.When I get in the car again, a little bit more daringly, and leave the cities behind I suddenly find myself surrounded by picture postcard scenes. By the roadside there are oleanders and cypresses. Small churches greet me at every turn and there are countless monaster-ies on top of the hills and mountains. I wonder whether anyone has ever counted the number of monasteries in Cyprus. Surely someone has. The arrows showing the direction for the Stav-rovouni monastery suddenly point at a bridle-way, so with a bold movement I turn onto the small road between the trees. The curving way reaches a steep rise and the car gets obstinate. In no way can she go up. I show mercy, get out and continue on foot. Mountains surround me, the silence becomes palpable and the expres-sion “not a soul in sight” receives a new mean-ing. As an over-civilised urban person I am al-most embarrassed. I have not seen such beauty for a long time.As I continue on my way in the car, the picture postcard scenes follow one another – a tiny church in the middle of nowhere, in front a priest is sitting with a woman, head bowed lis-tening under an olive tree. By the road there is Father Kallinikis’s icon studio where, as the no-tice says, even women may enter. In the small sleepy village two old men are sitting in the shade. One has an enormous key in his hand and he proudly shows that it opens the door to the local 15th-century chapel. Everywhere, everyone has a kind word for the visitor.The cities also have their fair share of remark-able churches. In Larnaca, not far from the seaside, we can find the Church of St. Lazarus, which is also the resting place of its patron saint. This was the Lazarus raised by Jesus from the dead, who later fled to Cyprus to escape the per-secutions of Christians. The church was built 1200 years ago, according to the leaflet so that it could be the second and also the final rest-ing place for Lazarus. It is so impressive I am almost afraid of stepping in. However, I don one of the shoulder covering gowns hanging at the entrance and venture in on tiptoe. I de-cipher the Greek letters and look at the saints with raised fingers until a noisy French group floods in. Then I quickly nip out.

kolostor van Cipruson? Biztosan. A Stavrovouni-kolostor felé ve-zető nyilak hirtelen egy föld-útra mutatnak, úgyhogy egy merész mozdulattal bekanyaro-dom a fák közé. A kacskaringós út egyszercsak egy emelkedő-höz ér, és az autó megmakacsol-ja magát: ezen már nem tud felmenni. Megkönyörülök rajta, kiszállok és gyalog megyek to-vább. Egymást érik körülöttem a hegyek, szinte tapintani lehet a csendet és új értelmet kap a

„sehol egy lélek” kifejezés. Túl-civilizált urbánusként szinte za-varba jövök, mert régen láttam ilyen szépséget.Ahogy autóval folytatom az utat, egymást követik a képeskönyv-jelenetek: a semmi közepén ap-rócska templom, előtte egy olajfa alatt pap ül és egy lehajtott fejű asszonyt hallgat; az út mentén Kallinikis atya ikonfestő műhe-lye, ahova – ahogy a tábla hir-deti – még nők is beléphetnek. Az álmos kis falucskában, az árnyékban két öreg ül, egyikük kezében hatalmas kulcs – büsz-kén mutatja, hogy ezzel nyílik a helyi, 15. századból származó kápolna ajtaja. És mindenhol, mindenkinek van az idegenhez egy kedves szava.A csodálatos templomokból a városokba is bőven jutott. Lar- nakában, a tengerparttól nem messze találjuk a Szent Lázár-templomot, ami egyben a szent végső nyughelye is. Ő volt az a Lázár, akit Jézus feltámasztott és aki a keresztényüldözések elől később Ciprusra menekült. A templomot 1200 évvel ezelőtt építették, a brosúra megfogal-mazása szerint azért, hogy má-sodik és egyben végső nyughelye lehessen Lázárnak. A templom annyira lenyűgöz, hogy szinte félek belépni. Azért magamra terítem a bejáratnál felakasztott válltakaró köpenyek egyikét és lábujjhegyen bemerészkedem. Silabizálom a görög betűket és nézem a felemelt ujjú szenteket egészen addig, míg egy hangos francia csoport be nem zúdul. Akkor gyorsan kiosonok.

Larnaka elsősorban annak köszönheti a hirtelen fellendülést, hogy a főváros, Nicosia repülőtere a város megosztottsága óta nem működik, ezért a nem csekély nemzetközi forgalmat a larnakai re-pülőtér vette át. About Larnaca itself, the town, which has devel-oped from a small sleepy place into a confident seaside resort, definitely deserves more time. This sudden boost is primarily due to the fact that since the division of the island Nicosia air-port has not been operating and therefore the rather large volume of international traffic has been taken over by Larnaca. It has made the town itself international. Larnaca’s promenade can compete with that of any elegant seaside resort. The long sandy beach is impressive and the water is already nicely warm even before the high season. In the streets churches and mosques comfortably rub shoulders.On the way to the airport I observe a clumsy driv-er in front of me with a sympathetic smile and overtake on the right with a decisive movement. With my left hand I drop back into fourth. I will miss this small car. And I will also miss Cyprus.

BeiJingto paris returnOne hundred years ago, on 10 June 1907, the world’s first international car rally got underway. The task of the participants was nothing less than to drive from Peking to Paris. The race – sensational for its time

– was devised by the Italian Prince Scipione Borghese, who organised the journey with the help of the French newspaper Le Matin. He also managed to ‘generate’ the cost of his automobile ‘by fundraising’. In addition to the prince’s Itala, two De Dions, a Spyker and a three-wheel Contal lined up at the start. There were no accompanying crews or check points. Information about the whereabouts of the competitors was forwarded with the help of telegraph messages sent from post offices and railway stations. The participants experienced hair-raising adventures through China, the Gobi desert and Russia. One car burst into flames, a bridge collapsed under another, but in the end all reached the finish. Orientation was assisted by compass and telegraph poles, but most of all they trusted the sun, since that was obviously a goal in that it falls below the horizon in the west. The winning Itala arrived in Pa-ris with a seven-day lead over the second, Dutch car. With its 4-cylinder 40 horsepower engine, Borghese’s vehicle reached a speed of 60 kilometres in the Gobi desert and consumed 30 litres per 100 km, but when necessary it could also use kerosene. The racers used up a total of sixteen tires on the 15,000 kilometre journey. Without a doubt the competition’s most elegant participant was the Vuitton company. It made the suitcases for one of the

Beyond the menuin the shade of parliament, in the busi-ness quarter of the city there is a unique restaurant where guests are served in a completely novel way. in the restaurant, with its subtle eclectic atmosphere, there is a special combination of running sushi and

Beyond the menuapetito, celebrating its first anniversary this month, is situated near holy trinity square in the heart of the castle district. it is worth dropping in, even just for a short taster or a ‘bite’. however, we can also find authentic hungarian specialities here, made just like grandma used to, reproducing the flavours of the hungarian countryside. two kinds of menu, two restaurant interiors and two ex-periences – welcome to apetito! by the en-trance we are greeted by manager lászló jakabffy who defines himself as only a ‘res-taurateur’, in place of all sorts of high-flown titles. and that says everything.

On the menuwhy apetito? we will soon learn the an-swer. we may taste several pages worth of items, since 24 types of dishes are offered in quantities which are small to be filling but more than enough for a tasting, thus unselfishly leaving sufficient space for other choices. the 24 types of dishes call for 24 kinds of wine, which are stored in a device called enomatic, allowing wine to remain fresh in an opened bottle. those who wish for a more ‘homogenous’ dinner can select from the other menu which has just as deli-cious food but far more substantial portions with such promising items as knuckle of lamb en terrine with poached vegetables or our favourite roast fillet of pork matured in cigar smoke with wild mushrooms, red wine flavoured onion jam and potato tartlet.

milliárdos onlineértékesítés a malévnél

a malév internetes értékesítési csatornájának forgalma hónapról hónapra rekor-dokat dönt, a légitársaság online jegyeladásból származó bevétele 2007. márci-usában átlépte a havi 1 milliárd forintot. az online értékesítés átlagosan 150 szá-zalékkal nőtt az elmúlt év hasonló időszakához képest. az interneten értékesített jegyek 35 százaléka a magyar piacon talált gazdára, de jelentős az online forga-lom az ír, az angol és a német piacokon is. a malév áprilisi oneworld csatlakozásának köszönhetően bővült a légitársaság interneten elérhető úti céljainak száma is. budapesti kiindulással jelenleg 77 vá-rosba foglalható repülőjegy a malév honlapon. 2007 februárja óta pedig már 24 órával a járatindulás előtt is lehetséges jegyet váltani az interneten keresztül, így azoknak sem szükséges jegyirodába fáradniuk, akik esetleg a legutolsó pillanat-ban döntenek az utazás mellett.

2007. április 25-én lezárult a malév zrt. privatizációja. a magyar állam képviselője, a tulajdonosi jogokat gyakorló ápv zrt. vezérigazgatója ünnepélyes keretek között, jelképesen nyújtotta át a malév-részvényeket a privatizációs pályázat győz-tesének, az airbridge zrt.-nek. a tranzakció a hitelek átvállalásával együtt az idei év egyik legnagyobb magyar vállalat-privatizációs üzlete. az új tulajdonos által vállalt teljes befektetés értéke mintegy 102 millió euró, azaz 26 milliárd forint. a magyar nemzeti légitársaság magánosítása egy olyan konstrukcióban került lebonyolításra, amely egyben az állami va-gyon megőrzésének biztosítéka is.

malév Has a neW oWner

the privatisation of malév was concluded on 25 april 2007. in a special ceremony the ceo of the state Holding company, ápv zrt., representative of the Hungarian state, handed over its malév shares to airbridge zrt., winner of the privatisation procedure. the transaction, including the assumption of loans, is one of the greatest Hungarian company-privatisation deals this year. the value of total investments undertaken by the new owner amounts to eur 102 million, which amounts to Huf 26 billion. the privatisation of the national Hungarian airline was realised under an arrangement that also guarantees the preser-vation of state property.

malév online revenue tops one billion forints

the turnover of the malév internet sales channel sets up new records month after month, and in march 2007 the airline’s revenue from tickets sales was more than 1 billion forints (eur 4 million). on average online sales have increased by 150 percent as compared to the same period last year. 35 percent of tickets sold on the internet were purchased by customers on the Hungarian market, but online turnover is also considerable on the irish, british and german markets.due to malév joining the oneworld alliance in april the airline’s destinations accessible on the internet have expanded, too. pres-ently air tickets can be booked on malév’s website to 77 cities departing from budapest. from february 2007 it has also been possible to purchase tickets on the internet 24 hours before departure time, so even those who decide to fly at the last moment do not need to go to a ticket office.

one million malév customers in five montHs

on 21 may 2007 malév was able to welcome its one-millionth passenger, nearly two weeks earlier than the previous year. the lucky passenger selected by the computer system, mr. antal burián travelled on malév flight no. 90 to new york, in business class, and was awarded malév’s gift by mr. andrás zboray, cco of the airline, which includes free tickets for two persons to any european destination.

“Do you get stressed from the responsibility? Who do you call to account when the numbers turn out dif-ferently?”

“When you do everything according to the best of your knowledge, very carefully, there is nothing to feel stressed about. Obviously in the air transport business there are always unknown factors, political situations, extreme weather conditions, which you simply cannot calculate into the numbers. Malév’s passenger traffic is increasing dynamically, and the small team I am in charge of also contributes to this with their work. In May we had our one millionth paying customer, earlier than last year, and it makes us feel good.”

“You would think that the possibility of buying tickets on the Internet makes all other forms of purchase un-necessary.”

“Well, there is definitely no risk of that for a long time. Although it is true that the turnover of the Internet sales channel sets up new records month after month and consists of about half of our sales. For example, in March it was more than one billion forints (EUR 4 mil-lion) a month, but from a technical aspect complicated reservations cannot be made on the Internet.”

“Don’t you find that customers would still prefer to go to traditional Malév offices like you used to have in Dorottya utca?”

“I think that now only those who used to work there feel nostalgic about it. People have less time now, they pre-fer to organise things quicker using the Internet, credit cards, and mobile phones. And also there is a different approach. Airlines are not rich enough to maintain a whole network of offices, when they can organise their sales in a more cost-efficient way.”

“What changes has the joining oneworld brought about in the area of sales?”

“It has resulted in significant growth in every respect, as, for example, the whole network of oneworld has become accessible on the Internet, so we have become more easily accessible too. With one single Malév ticket you can get to Australia changing to a Qantas flight in Bangkok. The tariff system of the oneworld air alliance offers many special features, for example trips around the world for Hungarian customers too, which is a novelty.”

“Have you sold any tickets like that?”“Considering the fact that we have only been selling this unique ticket combination for a month, we already have a good few customers. And I hope their numbers will increase continuously.”

Amikor aláírok egy szerződést sincs hátradő-lés, ez nem jelenti azt, hogy van egy nyugodt évünk, hiszen folyamatosan reagálni kell a piac kihívásaira. Általában gyorsan kell dönteni, és ha nálam a labda, szeretem is bedobni…

Nem nyomasztja a felelősség? Kin kérik számon, ha mégsem úgy alakulnak a számok?

– Ha az ember mindent legjobb tudása szerint, körül-tekintően tesz, nincs, ami nyomassza. Persze a légi közlekedésben mindig vannak ismeretlen tényezők, politikai helyzet, extrém időjárás, amit nem lehet belekalkulálni a számokba. A Malév utasforgalma dinamikusan nő, s ebben valamelyest az általam irányított kis csapat munkája is benne van. Május-ban a tavalyinál korábban sikerült köszöntenünk az egymilliomodik fizető utast, és ez jó érzés.

Az ember azt hinné, hogy az internetes jegyvásárlás minden más formát fölöslegessé tesz.

– Ettől még jó ideig biztosan nem kell tartani. Az in-ternetes értékesítési csatorna forgalma ugyan hónap-ról hónapra rekordokat dönt, s már a saját eladásunk mintegy fele. Márciusban például átlépte a havi egy-milliárd forintot, de a bonyolultabb foglalásokat tech-nikailag még nem lehet a neten végigfuttatni.

Nem hiányolják az utasok az olyan tradicionális Ma-lév-irodákat, amilyen a Dorottya utcai volt?

– Nosztalgiát már talán csak a valaha ott dolgozók érezhetnek. Az embereknek ma már kevesebb az idejük, szeretik gyorsan elintézni a dolgaikat. In-ternet, hitelkártya, mobiltelefon. Meg aztán a szem-lélet is változik. Egyetlen légitársaság sem annyira gazdag, hogy egész hálózatot tartson fenn irodák-ból, amikor az értékesítést költségtakarékosan is meg tudja oldani.

Milyen változásokat hozott a oneworld csatlakozás az értékesítés területén?

– Minden ponton jelentős növekedést eredményezett, hiszen például az interneten keresztül elérhetővé vált az egész oneworld hálózat, így mi is elérhetőb-bek lettünk. Egyetlen Malév-jeggyel, Bangkokban a Qantasra történő átszállással Ausztráliáig el lehet már jutni. A oneworld légi szövetség tarifarendszere számos különlegességet kínál, például világ körüli utakat a magyar utasoknak is, ami újdonság.

Adtak már el ilyen jegyeket?– Ahhoz képest, hogy még csak egy hónapja értékesít-jük ezt az egyedülálló jegykombinációt, máris szép számban van rá utasunk. Remélem, a számuk folya-matosan bővülni fog.

A Malév magyarországi értékesítési szervezetének ve-zetője, marketing- és reklámmenedzser. 1985 óta dol-gozik a légi közlekedésben. Képezte magát London-ban és Frankfurtban, angol nyelven tárgyal. Hobbija a kosárlabda, szenvedélye a főzés, a tánc.

Magas, vékony, igazi manökenalkat. Visszafogott elegancia, decens öltözet. Finom, női rafinériával be-lakott, kellemes környezet, asztalán laptop, vázában virág. Irodájában beszélgetünk. Ritkán dolgozik nyolc órát, mondja, inkább többet. Hetente egyszer azért min-denképpen elmegy kosarazni, bedobót játszik. A tánc, a salsa új „őrület”, az egész napos iroda utáni levezetés. Ebben a legkevésbé sem nőies piaci környezetben, ho-gyan boldogul egy női vezető?

– Köszönöm, jól. Soha nem volt hátrány, hogy nő va-gyok. Az is igaz, hogy a szakma szinte minden terüle-tén dolgoztam, jól ismerem a részleteket, tudom, mit, mennyiért lehet eladni, kitől mit várhatok el, ahogy mondani szokták: képben vagyok. Amikor utazási irodákkal ülök le tárgyalni, tudom, meddig mehetek el egy árvitában, és ezt a partnerek értékelni szokták. Meg aztán senki nem kérdőjelezi meg, hogy láttam-e már repülőt, ki tudok-e állítani egy repülőjegyet.

Mit szeret ebben a munkában?– Sokkal izgalmasabb terület ez, mint első hallásra tűnik. Állandóan figyelni kell a versenytársakat, mit

“Quite well, thank you. I have never found being a wom-an a disadvantage. I have worked in nearly all the fields of this profession, I know all the tiny details, I know what I can sell and for how much, what I can expect, so I think I am fully informed. When I sit down to negoti-ate with travel agencies, I know where I need to stop during a price debate, and my clients usually appre-ciate it. And no one really has doubts that I have seen aeroplanes and I can issue air tickets.”

“What do you like about your work?”“My field of work is much more exciting than it may first seem. I continuously need to keep abreast of what our competitors are offering and how their activities affect our routes. If the competition comes out with some-thing new, we must examine how it affects our mar-ket share and decide whether we should also come up with something, taking into consideration what serves Malév’s interests the best. When I sign a contract, it

Although the dangerous nature of lightning on the ground is more or less well-known by every-one, in order to understand why we are safe in the air we must engage in a bit of study concerning electricity. In other words, lightning happens between two ‘objects’ when their electric charge differs greatly and this difference quickly levels off. The electric charge of an aeroplane flying at high speed changes continuously due to friction, while during the flight it passes through areas with dif-ferent electric charges. In order to avoid any sudden discharge all the metal parts of the plane are con-nected by so-called static cables and sharply pointed metal spikes on the tips of wings and the stabilisers are installed through which the electric difference evens out on the principle of ‘corona discharge’. Despite such protective measures, lightning may hit an aircraft, although this is rare. This can happen when the plane flies through an area of opposite charges (for example between two clouds or a cloud and the ground) and the lightning is transmitted through the aircraft body. Although it produces strong light and sound effects, passengers are in no danger since the aeroplane behaves like a Faraday cage and protects us. This means that the lightning transits via the aircraft skin, completely avoiding the inside. For the sake of increased safety we keep well clear of thunder clouds, in whose proximity lightning is characteristically manifested. So lightning may hit an aeroplane, but in view of the Faraday principle both the aircraft and the passen-gers are completely safe. Thus lightning represents only a harmless spectacle during a night flight.

Do you always serve Hungarian food on board?Cecilia Bátyi Polyák: Mostly we aim to do so. Fortunately, there is a lot of feedback concern-ing how much our customers like the food we serve on board. Not only foreigners but Hungarian customers returning from abroad are pleased to experience Hungarian flavours. Therefore, when a menu is designed it is a cen-tral criterion to offer traditional Hungarian dishes as far as possible, while simultaneously taking into account international trends. The kitchens on board are suitable for storing, but cooling is not possible on all types of air-craft. Thus in the summer or at destinations where it is hot during a turn-around or after a night stop-over we use local catering firms for the return flight. This happens on long-haul flights like those to New York, Toronto and Bangkok. Nevertheless, customers often comment how nice it is to have the tastes of Hungarian cuisine, and they are quite sur-prised when we reveal that the food on their tray is not from the Ferihegy catering unit. This is possible since our various departmen-tal specialists always check with the catering managers of foreign destinations and try to select meals which are similar to our own. Hence we can always serve our customers fresh dishes in a Hungarian style appropriate for the time of day.

Mindig hazai, magyar ételeket kínálnak a fedélzeten?Bátyiné Polyák Cecilia: Többnyire erre törekszünk. Sze-rencsére sok visszajelzést kapunk arról, hogy utasaink mennyire kedvelik a fedélzeten kínált ételeinket. A ma-gyaros ízeket nemcsak a külföldi, hanem az utazásból ha-zatérő magyar utasok is szívesen fogadják. A menüsor összeállításakor ezért is fő szempont, hogy le-hetőség szerint hagyományos, magyar ételeket kínáljunk, szem előtt tartva a nemzetközi trendeket is. A repülőgé-peink fedélzetén lévő konyhákban a tárolás igen, a hűtés azonban nem minden típuson lehetséges. Ezért nyáron, illetve azokon az állomásokon, ahol magas a hőmérséklet az állásidő, illetve az éjszakázás ideje alatt, inkább a he-lyi cateringtől vételezünk visszaútra. Ez a hosszú távú já-ratok – New York, Toronto, Bangkok – esetében is így van. Ennek ellenére nem egyszer halljuk utasainktól ilyenkor is, hogy milyen jó, hogy hazai ízekkel várjuk őket, és csak amikor eláruljuk, hogy a tálcán lévő étel nem a ferihegyi cateringből származik, lepődnek meg igazán. How do you transfer be-tween terminals?

For transfers between ter-minals use the Port Author-ity JFK Train which operates frequently between all ter-minals at JFK as well as to stations that connect to the various New York railroad transportation systems (New York City Subway, Long Is-land Railroad).

How long does it take to transfer between termi-nals?

Allow up to 60 minutes to connect between American Air-lines and British Airways or Cathay Pacific. This should allow for sufficient time if you are clearing customs/immi-gration, transferring your baggage and navigating from one terminal to another.

The advertising fundamental principle that half of all advertising is money thrown away is now a common place – the only trouble is you don’t know which half it is. Those ordering television spots and radio advertisements are in a more fortunate position, as the number of viewers/listeners of the electronic media can be measured. But what about a billboard? To this question advertisers can now get a reassuring answer from the Eyebox2 device: when you look at the billboard the billboard “looks back” at you and from the signals from the human pupil it measures how long you look at it and what part of it. Even from a distance of 10 metres it is able to measure interest in a billboard from several people at the same time or the lack of interest. The advertising industry has already used such sys-tems but their high price has restricted their appli-cation to a great extent. The designers, on the basis of the measured data, are now not only able to decide which poster was the most interesting and eye-catching but also what part of it got the most attention, in other words where it is worthwhile positioning the more important messages, logos or animations. It can also be used effectively in stores as well, where the Eyebox2 quickly determines which shelves, areas are the most frequented by the customers’ glances.According to the developers of the camera it can be used to good effect in the case of home theatre systems as well. The device “senses” if you are not watching the screen and simply turns it off, and then continues the film when you start watching again. Farewell, good old remote control.
