In mountaineering vocabulary a person who hasclimbed the highest peaks of the former SovietUnion is called a snow leopard. Conquering fivepeaks is required to gain the title and Zsolt Ersshas done that. Hungarys most successful mountain-eer, by May 2011 he had climbed 9 of the 14 exist-ing peaks over 8000 metres. In 2002 he was the fir stHungarian national to reach the top of the world,Mount Everest. Furthermore, he was the first mo-tor-disabled person to conquer Lhotse, the worldsfourth highest peak, at a modest 8516 metres.

A year ago Zsolts right leg had to be amputated due toa mountain accident. People were crossing their fin-gers for him throughout Hungary. With his charac-teristic laughing eyes and as a matter of course hesays he stood on his feet with the help of an artificiallimb two months after the operation and resumedmountaineering another two months later. Thatshow it goes at least for Zsolt. Maybe its because hedid as his friends and fellow mountaineers suggested

when they hung a c loth above his s ick bed with thewords: Be str ong, Zsolt!Its a love affair that began some time ago. At the age

What does it feel like standing on a peak?

First of all its a great relief to know youve made iYou usually have doubts about whether you can reacit when you attack a peak. Every metre matters; yomust manage your strength well. Then theres the dscent, which strangely is always more difficult thagoing up especially wit h my leg.

As to your question, in 2003 I was en-gaged in an expedition towards a peak on my own inPakistan. On the way you keep looking out for hidingplaces and escape routes, and I suddenly noticed thata huge avalanche was coming down. I had enoughtime to climb into a cranny in a rock wall that Idnoticed before. The avalanche fell a metre in frontof me with such force that I wouldnt have stood achance. It was the kind of situation when you knowit would be sure death.

How do you prepare physically and mentally for climb-

ing a high mountain?

Preparation for us is continuous, since mountaineer-ing is our life. We have many tours each year, skiingand climbing. You have to be absolutely fit all the t ime.

We naturally do harder training before an expedit ionto the Himalayas, but there are no special or extremetasks. Its something you can do at the age of 60. It is anextra challenge when you are 70, but there are somepeople of this age, too.

Is your family more worried for you since your acciden

No. I know what Im doing and they are used to iMy wife is a mountaineer, so at home its naturaMy two-year-old daughter is a real adrenalin addicShe often balances among the furniture at home. Shskied last year. Shes not keen on it yet, but shell gto like it this year.

Any adventures when flying?

Many. For example, in the former Soviet Union wtravelled a lot in crowded airplanes, standing in thaisles clutching our rucksacks like during the rushour on the No. 4 or 6 tram on Budapests Great Bou l

vard. Or f lying in a mi litary helicopter between thluggage and a goat in the Pamir Mountains. Its inteesting when you take off on a jet from a city in wesern Europe to Delhi. There you change for a smalleIndian aircraft to Katmandu and then you fly on a 8-1

person small plane to the airport of a small, isolatevillage in Nepal. Then you have to walk for a couple days to reach the foot of the mountain before off yogo upwards.
