Charm Holden lives with her parents on a property adjacent the corner that in the past 11 years has seen 12 cars go over the bank, crashing through their fence. Miss Holden said her parents, Wayne and Bronwyn Holden, were fearful that someone was going to be killed if something was not done to make the corner safer. Miss Holden said, while some of the crashes had probably been the result of silly driving and speed, the majority of the crashes were more likely caused by the sharpness of the corner and poor lighting. Mr Holden has made a number of suggestions to council, all of which have not been acted on. Suggested safety measures include ‘car-eyes’ in the road surface, lights on one of the two powerpoles right on the corner, a crash barrier and a speed hump before the corner. “So what do we have to do, wait till someone dies before the issue is addressed,” Miss Holden said. The latest crash happened at night, during a heavy downpour. The 18-year-old woman driver was not speeding, however her car went too far to the left and lost control, leaving the road and going down the bank. Her car crashed through the Holden’s fence and then rolled on to its roof. “Luckily she wasn’t hurt but we called the ambulance anyway, they (ambulance staff) checked her over and let her go home,” Miss Holden said. The Holdens use the front paddock for their sheep to graze, but every time there is a crash their fence comes down and they have to muster the sheep into another paddock so they do not stray on to the road and cause another accident. The family are urging Horowhenua District Council to act. Council roading manager Kevin Peel said council were looking into the corner and would be looking at introducing measures to increase the safety. He said nothing had been done due to the possibility of Roslyn Road becoming a heavy traffic bypass but they will be addressing the issue.

Horowhenua College studentLong Van Nguyen found a schoolvisit to Vietnam bittersweet.

“My family left Vietnam to livein New Zealand two years ago,” hesaid.

“I have opportunities in NewZealand but I miss Vietnam, Iwant to live in both countries.”

In 2013, Long and his familyhosted a student from Nguyen TatThanh School.

Her family reciprocated whenLong went to Vietnam as part of aHorowhenua College studentdelegation. Long enjoyed thereunion, but undoubtedly thehighlight of his ‘home’ visit wasstaying two days in his formerfamily home with hisGrandmother.

“Our house hadn’t changed atall but I met up with friends frommy (former) school,” Long said. “Ithas only been two years but they

have totally changed, they havegrown up so much.”

Hanoi hadn’t changed but Longsaw it through new eyes. “Hanoi isvery busy and noisy, I notice thatnow that I am living in NewZealand where it is so quiet.”

Long enjoyed local cuisine, something he misses sincemoving to New Zealand.

“The food is so good, there are alot of things we can’t get in NewZealand that I miss,” he said.Being the only male on the trippresented some challenges but thenine girls who completed theHorowhenua student delegationappreciated having an interpreterin the group. While they had thechallenges of communication andbecoming accustomed to thetraditional food, the biggest issuefor Long was bidding farewell tohis friends and relations.

By TANYAWOODLIZARD CANARY

The lizard canary is one of the oldest canary breeds, believed to have arisenas a mutation from canaries in France during the early 1700s.By the mid-1940s, only about 40 of these canaries existed in Europe due to theravages of two world wars and disease epidemics.A closely monitored breeding programme in Great Britain brought the birdback from the brink of extinction, and today lizard canaries are one of themost popular canaries, bred specifically for the “spangled effect” of itsfeathers— black crescent-shaped spots running down its back and breast, which resemble the scales of a lizard. There are four base colours of lizard canaries— gold, silver, blue and red –and they are also characterised by a ‘cap’— a single circular pattern offeathers on top of the head, ideally oval. For exhibition purposes, the legs, tail, wings and beak should be as dark aspossible, spangles regular, the oval cap distinct, clear and neat, and thefeathers tight and silky.

Birds of a feather are judgedtogether.

Chirps, tweets and twittersfrom budgies, canaries, finchesand foreign hook beaks(including parrots) made for anoisy weekend at the 39thannual Levin Bird Show lastmonth.

More than 30 exhibitors fromaround the lower North Islandshowed a total of 520 birds at theMemorial Hall, packed with rowafter row of cages.

Levin’s only winner wasGraham Pilling, who took theAlbert Spaak Memorial for BestLizard Canary.

Graham has been breedinglizard and red factor canariesfor just two years, as aretirement hobby.

In his first year showing‘Reds’, he “cleaned up” in acouple of regional shows.

“I was a novice breeder butjust blew away all thechampions. Even thechampions were asking me howI fed them.”

This year, again in his firstyear showing them, it’s hischampion lizard which hastaken the top prize for its type.

Graham said it all comesdown to starting with quality

birds for breeding.“A lot of people breed

quantity to get quality. I startedoff with quality so I don’t needto carry a lot of birds.”

He has about 30 birds in totalin his aviaries.

His father kept a large aviaryand, as a child and teenager, it

was Graham’s job to clean outthe aviary and feed the birds. Hebought his first pair of redfactors two years ago and joinedthe Levin Bird Club at the sametime.

“Canaries are beautifulsingers. On a nice sunny day,I’ll be sitting outside and I can

hear them singing away, it’squite spectacular to listen toand to see them.”

He said budgie owners wereknown to use toothbrushes andhair driers to groom feathersbefore a show, but all he had todo was give his birds a bath twodays before a show. “Canarieslike to have regular baths andthat gives them plenty of time topreen their feathers.”

Graham estimates his birdseat their way through between70 and 100 kilos of seed a year.

“The bird club gets adiscount for buying bird seed inbulk, nearly half the price in petshops, so it doesn’t cost as muchas it could.”

Levin Bird Club showmanager Merv Johnson said theclub was great for anyone whokeeps birds.

“You don’t have to be abreeder, just have a love ofbirds.

“We’re a friendly bunch ofbird fanciers and our moreexperienced members arealways happy to help newmembers and novice breederswith advice.”

The club has about 45members and is always lookingfor new and younger people tojoin, he said.■ For more information about theLevin Bird Club contact ChristineWarren on ph (06) 368-8740.

Another Sandwich

LVN040714splhaggis-two

HAGGIS Sandwich were a huge hit when theyperformed in Levin last year and they are coming backby special request.

Experienced musiciansand songwriters AndrewLondon and SteveMcDonald are on stage inTe Takere for their repeatperformance on SaturdayJuly 12.

Drawing on Scottishhistory and the migrationto Canada, Australia andNew Zealand, SteveMcDonald’s musicinspires patrioticnostalgia in anyone ofCaledonian descent.

With more than threemillion CD sales in theUnited States alone, hecan be regarded as anational treasure.

He began taking pianolessons at the age of fivebut soon becameinterested in pop and rockmusic, joining his firstband when he was 12 toplay the drums because itwas the only slot open.

Reverting tokeyboards, he has been amember of many bandsand groups ever since, including Dizzy Limit andHuman Instinct in the1960s and 70s.

Andrew Londoncontributes guitar andbouzouki, as well as alsohis own satirical andhumorous songs.

He is involved in manymusical collaborations, inparticular the AndrewLondon Trio, which is themain vehicle for hissatirical and whimsicalsongs.

Together they offer awide-angled and oftenirreverent approach to

Kiwi culture. Food fads, youth culture, maleinsecurities, weddings, rugby, coffee — all of theseand more are explored andexploited in HaggisSandwich.

■ The show is at 7.30pm atTe Takere. Tickets are $25and available from theservice desk at Te Takere oron-line atwww.tetakere.org.nz/whats-on/events/tickets/

Hotrods ready to rumble into townLVN040714splhotrod

THEY look spectacular, andsound even better, TararuaRodders will be out cruisingtoday.

By PETER FRANKLIN

American Graffiti comes toLevin tonight with members ofthe Tararua Rodders hotrod clubcelebrating the United States’Independence Day (July 4) with arun from Levin to Otaki and backagain.

Club president BruceChambers said it was a chance tocelebrate the mighty AmericanV8 — whether it be Chevrolet,Ford or Mopar, the sound is justfantastic.

Mr Chambers said theIndependence Day run wouldstart with club members meetingoutside Barton’s Furniture onOxford Street north at 6pm, fromthere the hotrods, classic

Americana and muscle cars, willhead south on State Highway 1 toOtaki where they will park up forat least half an hour beforereturning to Levin, where they

intend to park in between thelights on Oxford Street.

Mr Chambers said, apart fromhaving a good time cruising, theaim of the run was to give the

public an opportunity to look atthe cars and talk to the owners.

“We are a family orientatedclub and always looking for newfamilies to get involved,” hesaid.

Mr Chambers said a lot of themembers went to the annualBeach Hop in Waihi and to seeso many great cars cruising upand down the main road was abrilliant sight.

“So to see a crowd of hotrodsin town, parked up or cruisingwill be a lot of fun,” he said.

WHEEL DEAL: Levin resident Del Podmore is a regular user of theTotal Mobility scheme, seen here with driver Colin Finlayson.

PHOTO: TANYA WOOD

MOBILITYMATTERSThe TotalMobility schemewas set upin the early 1980s, developed out of aTelethon initiative. The scheme is funded in partnershipbetweenHorizons Regional Council(40 per cent) andNewZealandTransport Agency (60 per cent). Thescheme is designed tomake it easierfor peoplewith disabilities to getaround the region, by providingdiscounted taxi rates for peoplewhose ability to use public transportis impaired. It also assists taxi companieswithfunding to install wheelchair hoists.Current TotalMobility users in Levinare 1297 and 63 in Foxton. There is no longer a taxi service inFoxton and Foxton Beach, howeverresidents can still use their vouchersin neighbouring towns. All newusers of the schemeneed tobe assessed first for eligibility. Thiscan be arranged by phoning one ofthe following organisations:Contact Inc, Jack Allen CommunityHouse – Ph (06) 368-1195.Arthritis Support Group – Ph (06)368-1114.Stroke Foundation – (06) 368-9933Idea Services – Ph (06) 368-7313.Parkinson’s Society – Ph (04)904-4240.■ Formore information visitwww.horizons.govt.nz or callHorizon’s Totalmobility Co-ordinatortoll free on 0508 800 800.

By TANYAWOOD

The Total Mobility scheme willnot be opened up to includeprivate hire vehicles.

Horizons Regional Council, which organises and part fundsthe scheme, narrowly votedagainst a motion citing concernsaround affordability for counciland the potential for fraud asprivate hire providers did notrun meters, which reducedcouncil’s ability to auditproperly.

This was despite a submissionmade by Horowhenua MayorBrendan Duffy on behalf of theDisability Forum and OlderPeople’s Network to open up theservice. He said the currentservice did not provide what isneeded by some people.

“A taxi takes you from A to B,the driver will take yourgroceries in but won’t walkaround the supermarket withyou, wait outside while you go inand get your prescription, ormake a cup of tea for you athome. It’s about using theexisting budget to provide a newopportunity with a greater levelof service for an obvious need inour community. Horizons clearlydo not understand or appreciatethat and have not supported it,and for that we are verydisappointed.”

Levin taxi company, TaxisDirect, currently provides theTotal Mobility service inHorowhenua.

Levin resident Del Podmorecan remember the name of everytaxi driver since she startedusing the Total Mobility schemeback in 1993.

One of the drivers, who hasbeen picking her up for the past

two years, “probably knows meinside and out”, she said.

Ms Podmore has had cerebralpalsy from birth and, though shecan walk a little, the mobilitytaxi service makes life a loteasier.

“It’s not like I can run to townand back. I use the taxi serviceevery Tuesday and once a monthon Thursdays for shopping andgetting to appointments. I can’tremember a time I couldn’t get ataxi when I needed it.”

She said all the drivers she’shad were nice and friendly, andwould go the extra mile if theycould.

“There has been the odd timewhen I’ve got one of them tochange a lightbulb for me.”

Eleanor Gully, president ofContact Inc which regularlyassesses people for the scheme, said it was a fantastic service butdifficult to say if the decision toexclude private hire cars waswrong.

“I suppose it’s about peoplehaving choices but I’ve not heardany complaints about peopleunable to get a taxi when theyneeded it.”

She said it could be “feast orfamine” with people wantingassessments.

“One week it can be just twoand then another week we’reseeing eight people.”

The age and disabilities varybut the majority of people areaged over 60, she said. “We seemany older people who arehousebound. They don’t want torely on friends and family, theywant to be independent in themost part. We decline very fewpeople.”

She said it was possible manymore people may be unaware of

the scheme or did not think theywould qualify.

Taxis Direct Levin managerCindy Heihei said the Horizonsvote was a good outcome forthem.

“We can [easily] cope with thework and a lot of what they wereasking, we already do for free, such as taking people’s groceriesinto the home and walkingpeople into their appointments.A taxi service has a lot moreoverheads than a private hiredoes and we just want to be on aneven playing field.”

The taxi firm takes more than100 calls a week from peopleneeding to use the service,

generally for shopping, appointments, church andsocialising, mostly within Levin.Taxis Direct Levin employ 13drivers and has three mobilityvans with hoists.

The Total Mobility discountprovides for up to a maximum of$10. Ms Heihei confirmed themajority of rides within Levinwere under $10 (the firm chargesby the kilometre). There was noextra charge for using themobility hoist for scheme users.

Ms Heihei said they did have adriver working in Foxton abouttwo years ago. “We gave it a goodgo for almost three years but theservice wasn’t used enough. The

driver might not get any worksome days, it just wasn’teconomical for us.”

Horizons Regional Councilchairman Bruce Gordon said thecurrent Total Mobility Schememodel, allowing only approvedtaxi organisations, was the mostefficient course of action at thisstage pending a review of thePublic Transport Plan in 12months’ time.

Aquatic centre wants kids to swimLevin Aquatic Centre is running aSplash For No Cash promotion.

All Horowhenua children swim freefor an entire term as long as theirparents or caregivers sign up and pay infull for swimming lessons in Term 3.

Some schools can no longer afford tomaintain pools and teach kids how toswim. “Drowning is consistently thethird highest cause of unintentionaldeath in New Zealand,” said AquaticsHorowhenua Programmes and eventssupervisor Rachael Miller.

“Knowing the basics will enhanceyour child’s experience in learning toswim confidently and competently.”

Swimming lessons are not a luxury.

“They are a necessity if parents wanttheir youngsters to be safe at the beach,in local rivers or pools,” Ms Miller said.

Lessons start on Monday July 21 andrun for nine weeks, there is a $10incentive discount if lessons are paid forbefore the end of week one and TheSplash for no Cash promotion allowschildren to visit the pool and swim asmuch as they like during Term 3providing all lessons are paid for in full.

Looking for the best tyres to puton the family car?

With winter really starting toflex its ‘wintry’ muscle, Craig atFoxton Tyre and Lube saysdon’t take the chance with thefamily — make sure the car hassafe tyres, come in and see himand get them checked.

“If they need replacing orborderline, we can fix it on thespot,” he said.

Not only do they supply agreat range of tyres for thefamily car, they have just aslarge a selection of tyres forcommercial and farm vehicles, even mobility scooters.

With the latest wheel align-ment technology onsite, theycan increase the life of yourtyre. Craig says a wheel align-ment is critical to good hand-ling, with all four wheels cor-rectly aligned means longertyre life, safe steering and saferbraking in an emergency.

Having trouble starting yourcar on these cold mornings?Well, it could be that a newbattery is in need. Pop down toFoxton Tyre and Lube see Craigand let him sort out a newbattery.

In fact, for any mechanicalrepairs see Craig at Foxton Tyreand Lube.

Craig says the biggest prob-

lem people have is that theyare not sure what to buy. Justask, he will explain what is bestfor you and your car, truck ortractor.

The other great thing aboutgetting your tyres changed orgetting a service at Foxton Tyreand Lube is that, while youwait, you can walk around thecorner and relax in the cafe atTasman Fish supplies, enjoy acoffee, a meal or sit back andwatch stockcar racing on thebig screen.

Craig says to him service isall about making sure yourcustomers have all the rightinformation to make the rightchoices.

Regular tyres, brakes andsuspension checks save lives.Don’t become a statistic, dropin and see Craig at Foxton Tyreand Lube. Drive happy thiswinter.

Athletic Premiers refuse to be denied

LVN020714TWrugbyprem4

PREMIER Athletic winger Sani Ulu-Kini pushes past Levin College Old Boy first-five Stewart McGregor, withAthletic players open side flanker Peter Antonio, far left, and fullback Simon Black in support.

By TANYAWOOD

Levin Athletic Rugby Club hadsomething to celebrate onSaturday with both Premier andSenior Reserve teams scoringwins over Levin College Old Boys.

In a highly-chargedatmosphere at Levin Domain, thePremier teams gave theirsupporters a truly nailbiting gameas they battled to stake their claimon fourth place, in the pointstable, and a chance to play in thesemifinals.

During the first half, the twoteams were try-for-try. LCOBscored two tries, one conversionand one penalty, while Athletic, with two players in the sinbin atone time, managed to score twotries, both converted, and onepenalty. First-five Matt Eastonwas given time out for aprofessional foul and No 8 LouieTovo for a questionable tackle.

Starting the second half, withAthletic leading 17-15, LCOBmissed two penalty kicks but itwas third time the charm with thenext kick clearing the bar to giveLCOB a one-point lead.

That lead was shortlived asAthletic struck back with twopenalties of their own to nudgeahead, 23-18. It was game on as atry and conversion by Athletic inthe last 15 minutes took the scoreto 30-18.

Undeterred, LCOB pushedhard and, after two attempts, gotthe ball over the tryline.

However, Athletic had doneenough to hold their lead, with thefinal score 30-23.

Athletic coach Peter Hirinisaid every win was an epic win.

“We managed to hold on to theball for longer phases of play andturned pressure into points.

Unlike previous games, we wereable to sustain that pressure for 80minutes rather than dropping offin the last 20.”

He said they would have a fullyfit squad going into their nextgame against Levin Wanderers.

“We need to hold on to ourfourth and we’ve got Old Boys stillbreathing down our necks.”

LCOB manager Dean Thomassaid his team had a good start tothe match. “We raced out but letAthletic score a couple of timesand failed to capitalise when they

had two players sinbinned. Togive them their credit they cameback at us, which teams tend to dowhen they’re down players.”

He said, on the whole, it was agood game. “I felt we had thesuperior scrum but it just seemedwe went off the boil a little. In thelast quarter of the game though, the boys pulled finger and pushedmore which got us that last try.”

In fifth place with two gamesleft to play, against Shannon(leading the competition) andParaparaumu (defending

champions), Thomas said LCOBhad to beat both teamsconvincingly. “In this grade anyteam can win on the day. We’vebeaten both these teams beforeand there’s no reason why wecan’t do it again.”

In the Senior Reserves match, played at Levin Domain, it was asweet moment for Athletic as theysavoured their first victory thisseason.

Athletic got the jump on LevinCollege Old Boys early, leading12-8 at halftime, having notched

up two tries and a conversion. In a close run second half, two

more tries, both converted, put thefinal score at 26-23.

Athletic tryscorers wereforward Abraham Jackson in theforwards, winger CameronHalbert and No 8 SebastianJackson, who also kicked thethree conversions.

Athletic manager Gerald deCastro said the boys won in style.“They were running and passingthe ball, everything just went well.It was an excellent game towatch.”

He said the team had improvedweek-on-week, despite previouslosses. De Castro said they wouldnot be able to field a full team thisweek and would default the lastgame of the season to Ngati Toa,currently unbeaten and top of thesenior reserves points table. “Myguys are happy to go out on ahigh,” said de Castro.

Athletic remain at the bottomof the table with five points, sixbehind LCOB at fifth place.

Dean Smith, LCOB manager, said, with just three pointsbetween the teams, it was anunceasing battle.

“The score was goingbackwards and forwards, theleads swapped a number of times. It was a real hard fought, closebattle.

“We had our opportunities onthe attack but failed to capitaliseon them.”

Sitting five points behindfourth-placed Paraparaumu,LCOB meet Shannon (lying thirdon the table) on home ground thisweekend.

Smith admits it will be a toughgame and the team would need tofocus on set pieces and minimiseerrors.
