Polisielede van die Lydenburg Polisiestasie besig om die vleis en karkasse te weeg. Bo en Onder: Karkasse van verskeie boksoorte, tierboskat en ape.

SKOKGOLWE en afgryse is verlede week deur die hele land ervaar met die beslaglegging van wildsvleis ter waarde van bykans R150 000. Die meeste vleis is beskermde spesies. Twee mans van Lydenburg is gearresteer. Een van die verdagtes, mnr. Willie Richards, het aan die polisie vertel hy doen dit want “my kinders is honger.” Daar was baie teenkanting met die beslaglegging by Richards se huis in Lehmanstraat. Die polisie, Mpumalanga Toerisme en Parke Agentskap en ander groepe hou die betrokke mans al ’n geruime tyd dop. Daar is na hul arrestasie deur wildsplase bevestig dat die mans al op hul grond betrap is. Daar was egter altyd ’n verduideliking.

Die polisie het op agt vrieskaste beslag gelê. En ’n kameelperdkarkas het in Richards se koelkamer by sy huis agtergebly. Dit huis is as ’n slagpale ingerig en die wildsvleis is in pakkies verpak, net reg om te verkoop. Richards se saak het Woensdag in die Lydenburg Landdsroshof voorgekom Sy saak is uitgestel tot 2 Augustus. Mnr. Hoffeld (medebeskuldigde) is op R500 borg vrygelaat. Deel van Richards se klagtes is jag sonder permitte, jag van bedreigde en beskermde spesies asook bedryf van ’n onwettige abatoir.Monsters van die vleis gaan vir ontleding gestuur word.Dit is onwetting om bedreigde spesies te jag.

On Mandela Day (18 July 2011) Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) took on the 67 minute challenge! Patrick Sichlangu and Davida van der Walt left the Winterveld Offices at 14h00 with the intent to deliver f o o d t o t h e l o c a l communities. They first visited Itereleng Home Based Care who are situated in Makgemeng Village. Theresia Makofane and Shonaphi were very happy to accept the food donation on behalf of ECM. From there they went to the Civil Soc ie ty Deve lopment Initiative (CSDI) based in Riba Cross. Their main objectives are:1. To promote social support to communities where the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is high2. To identify bedridden clients who need care3. To identify child headed families and refer them appropriately4. To offer physical and e m o t i o n a l c a r e f o r bedridden people and5. To provide food for orphans and vulnerable childrenS o l l y R a m o g a y a n e expressed their sincere gratitude to ECM. FOOD shortages and poverty in Zimbabwe have been a huge concern for decades. For the past four years, a Zimbabwe Relief Program has been managed by Rev. Riaan Botha from Tubatse. The programme includes donations of food, clothes and bedding. Rev. Botha is usually a part of a group that take the donations through to Zimbabwe.

The Op-en-Wakker group of Ohrigstad hosted an event last Wednesday to contribute to this fund. They were joined by the Lydenburg Dienssentrum, Gryse Jeug and other organisations. The guests showcased their talents by singing and other cultural events. “We have dec ided to send cash donations to Zimbabwe this year, as it gets more and more difficult to cross the border. The food received on Wednesday will be distributed to other poor communities with the help of Solidarity,” said Mrs Amanda Brits.

WAAR ek kom, kla sakemense oor die ekonomie. Ek weet dit is ’n globale krisis. Ek weet as ’n internasionale bank vou, dan stort beleggersvertroue in duie en dit raak jou en my. Die ekonomie is so geglobaliseer, dat as ’n voëltjie in Siberië op ’n motor blerts, dan raak iemand paniekerig.As jy, soos ek, skuld het, dan ondersteun jy ’n laer rentekoers. Maar as jy soos ek ook, ietsie iewers belê het, dan soek jy weer ’n hoër rentekoers. Ja, die ekonomie raak ons almal. Punt is, of jy nou naels doen vir ’n lewe, ’n koffiehuis bedryf, kontrakte met groot myne het, of ’n koerant bedryf, almal is dit eens dat dit tans maar beroerd gaan met almal se geldsake.Almal sit en wag dat die ekonomie verbeter. Almal wag

dat toerisme verbeter. Almal wag dat werk geskep word. Almal wag dat die slapgat regering ons vrot paaie regmaak en ons waterbronne oppas.My vraag vandag is egter eenvoudig: Wat doen ons; ek en jy, aan of vir die ekonomie? Hoe kan ons ophou sit en wag vir die wêreldekonomie om te herstel?Die antwoord is nie so moeilik soos jy dink nie. Ons kan dit self “kickstart”. Doen eerstens sover moontlik plaaslik besigheid. Diens jou motor plaaslik. Koop jou onderdele plaaslik. Ondersteun plaaslike koffiehuise. Soveel van ons ry oor die berg “Mall” toe as ons iets wil koop. Hoekom koop ons nie plaaslik nie? Dit is wel waar dat Lydenburg “verwagtend” is. Soek ’n alledaagse item en die antwoord is: “Jammer, ons het dit nie in voorraad

nie, maar verwag dit nou enige dag”. Twak. As jy iets oor die Internet koop, is dit binne twee dae by jou, per koerier. As jy ’n bepaalde item nie in voorraad het nie, vra ’n deposito, tel die telefoon op, bestel die item en laat dit hiernatoe koerier. Meeste kliënte sal hiermee tevrede wees en die koerierkoste betaal, want dit bly goedkoper as om Nelspruit toe te ry.Plaaslike besighede moet hierdie etiek aanleer en dié diens aan hulle kliënte aanbied. Vriendelik, effektief en met ’n “smile”. Diens bring meer besigheid as die produk self.Die ander ding wat my dwars in die krop steek, is mense wat jou nie betaal nie. Volgende week is nie oor ’n maand nie. Dertig dae is nie 90 dae nie. Baie van ons moet vooraf vir ons voorraad, dienste of materiale betaal. Hoekom moet ons jou vir 90 dae smeek, lek en dreig om ons te betaal? En dan gee mense voor hulle is jou pel, maar misbruik jou vriendskap? Kom mense, ons eie ekonomie is in ons eie hande. Koop by mekaar, ondersteun mekaar en betaal mekaar op tyd. Plaaslik is paslik!

JP van Dyk skryf:Drie weke gelede het 'n kollega en vriend van my op sy motorfiets op die Longtompas gesterf. Tydens die begrafnis maak die pastoor bekend dat hy 'n hartaanval gehad het. 'n Paar dae later hoor ek h o e ' n w e r k n e m e r v a n ' n p l a a s l i k e begrafnisondernemer in die kroeg sê dat hy dood is omdat hy op die berg verkluim het. Ek begin wonder en vra 'n paar vrae. Ek weet dat sy my vriend se gewese vriendin is, ek weet ook dat hy tot en met sy dood in 'n gelukkige verhouding was met sy nuwe meisie of soos hy haar genoem het: “sy droomvrou”. Ek maak dit af as suurdruiwe – tot sowat twee weke gelede. Ek sit reg agter die eks-meisie en hoor hoe sy vir almal vertel: “my man is dood want die h**r met wie hy deurmekaar was, verwag 'n tweeling en daarom het hy selfmoord gepleeg. Hy kon dit nie hanteer nie.” (En sy is nie eers swanger nie). My hare staan regop! Ek vra sy kinders wat die oorsaak van sy dood was. Hulle weet nie want die doodsertifikaat het by die “duifnes” weggeraak. So ook sy selfoon wat aan haar oorhandig is toe die lyk verwyder is. So ook die ruiker in die kerk ( die eks-meisie wat by die ondernemer werk het erken sy het dit gevat), die valhelm in die kerk, 'n foto in die kerk, 'n skootrekenaar, horlosie, beursie en bankkaarte. Die kinders kry 'n nuwe doodsertifikaat by Binnelandsesake en afskrifte van die ongeluk – en nadoodse verslag. Oorsaak van dood: “Veelvuldige beenbreuke.” Hy het nie 'n hartaanval gehad nie, hy het 'n motorfietsongeluk gehad met erge kopbeserings, borsbeserings en ander. Hoe kan 'n begrafnisondernemer sulke leuens aan familie en naasbestaandes versprei? Hoe kan dokumentasie weerhou word? Hoe kan iemand wie se werk dit is om 'n lyk en sy besittings met respek te behandel, geld onttrek uit sy bankrekening, al is sy iemand uit sy verlede? Dis oneties, dis onwettig – Dis diefstal. Die nuutste storie wat die rondte doen is dat my vriend se wens om in sy gunsteling geel en swart leerbaadjie veras te word, verontagsaam is. Dat die eks dit van die lyk verwyder het en gehou het en dat dit tans in besit is van motorfietsvriende, so ook die valhelm van die kerk. Laasgenoemde kon nie bevestig word nie, alhoewel die bron geloofwaardig en bekend is in die gemeenskap. Gaan die familie ooit die regte as kry? Ek vra maar net. Ek hoop van harte dat my vriend se kinders hierdie ongeruimthede sal rapporteer, sodat hierdie dinge aan die liggebring sou word om sodoende vrede te bring – net soos die ondernemer se duif dit uitbeeld. Hoe kan iemand gaan rus met al die tipe dinge wat aangaan? Brand vir Piet Moolman 'n kersie, want hy het dit nie verdien nie.

Hoe kan die dooies rus?

Apartheid systemhad its merits M.J Matemane writes: We all agree that the apartheid system of government was demonic and inhuman. But some of the practices that this government put in place were sound and good. For example there was proper law and order, albeit one-sided. The officials were competent and dedicated. Their teachers were well-qualified and highly inspired. That is why they left footprints that no amount of rain or tempest can erase. These teachers could inspire their learners in such a way that the latter aspired to greater heights. They were highly motivated. Teachers who regarded teaching as a calling. Teachers, not cheaters, who did not question the inspectors' visit to their schools. Teachers who appreciated such visits. For they were aware that such visits would benefit their school tremendously. These are aspects that are lacking at present in all spheres of life-in education in particular. This was worsened by the introduction of the OBE system at schools. That a learner can read and write without knowledge of the letters of the alphabet. That a learner can write an essay or answer grammatical questions without the knowledge of the building blocks such as parts of speech. Impossible. The learner must know and differentiate between different parts of speech. He must be able to know that an adjective qualifies a noun, and that an adverb modifies a verb. He must know that there are referring words as well as connecting words. Examples of the latter are conjunctions and the former are: the, it, she, he, etc. These are indispensable in as far as the study of any living language is concerned. The learner must know that there are words denoting similarities and those denoting differences, e.g. Similarities: similarly, the same as, Differences: on the contrary, whereas, on the other hand. Words denoting examples: such as, like, to mention but a few. Without a thorough knowledge of the above, forget about learning any language. To say learners can do without them, is a fallacy. Yet the department of education says we can do so without them. What a misconception.

Liewe mnr. Mandela. Ek hoop jy het ’n rustige verjaardag gehad en ek dink dit is heel gepas om jou ’n lewe vol vreugde toe te wens. Ek hoop dat die leiers wat in jou voetspore volg jou naletenskap en voorbeeld kan vereer deur dieselfde deursettingsvermoë te hê teenoor die land as 27 jaar in die gevangenis…In dieselfde asem kan ek met alle eerlikheid sê dat dit nie besig is om te gebeur nie.Malema, Zuma en Mbeki se swak regeringstyl gee ’n baie slegte indruk. Die prentjie wat jy begin skilder het vir ons toekoms is drasties besig om te vervuil.Madiba, alles waarvoor jy so hard geveg en bereik het in jou leeftyd kan ongedaan gemaak word. Dankie dat jy vir ons so ’n goeie voorbeeld was. Ons het iemand verwag wat baie haat en vergelding gaan uiter toe hy uit die gevangenis kom. Maar ons almal het gou besef dat daar net ’n wesenlike liefde vir ander mense in jou hart is. Dat jy ongelooflik hart en siel in Suid-Afrika gaan sit om veranderinge vol vrede te laat verloop. Ek is net jammer dat daar al wel so baie bloed geloop het. Ek is bang ons sal doodgaan in ons geboorteland. Daar is baie mense wat vermoor word. Ek weet nie of jou raadgewers vir jou die regte getalle deurgee nie. Daar is baie mense wat verkrag word, besteel word, aangeval word. Duisende mense Madiba. Daar is baie misdaad, baie korrupsie en baie haat in die nuwe geslag (post 1994). Dit maak my bang om te sien hoe millitant almal is.Ek dink hulle word nie meer geleer waarvoor jy staan nie. Hulle word net geleer om meer te wil hê en alles in hul vermoë te doen om hul eie lewens te verbeter. Hierdie stakings is baie erg Madiba. Ek dink nie jy ry meer so baie rond nie, so jy sal nie weet hoe erg dit is om sonder petrol te sit nie. Baie mense se brood-en-botter hang van petrol af. En nou word die stakers 7% aangebied wat nie vir hulle goed genoeg is nie. Madiba, as ek maar net ’n 7% verhoging kon kry! Jy het 27 jaar in die gevangenis gesit in vyandige toestande en nie in die buiteland weggekruip en in weelde gelewe op skenkersgelde soos 70% van vandag se regering nie! Die meeste het in herehuise in Europa weggekruip. Vra asseblief vir jou mense om nie die land meer te vertrap nie Madiba. Hulle sal vir jou luister.

Sweden. During the process of adjudicating the judges noted that “there certainly are budding scientists in our schools; the passion that we see here is amazing. We have great thinkers who tackle serious threats to water sustainability.” The judges added, “With guidance and polishing of some aspects of their projects, the learners can be developed to make a difference in their communities and the water sector. Some of these inventions are excellent, showcasing engineers in the making.”Among the projects that were showcased were those that address water pollution, saving water and preventing water wastage. Through the SAYWP, youths get the opportunity to interact with their peers, share

knowledge and experiences related to water and the environment. Through the competition, learners identify problems related to water in their schools or communities, do research and recommend solutions to those problems. It has the awareness and invention categories. Various prizes that the top three winners get include; bursaries from DWA for careers in the water sector, tickets to Stockholm – Sweden, subsistence allowances during the trip, cash prizes and computers or laptops.The Departmental Water Use Efficiency (WUE) unit runs workshops all over the country to schools that apply to participate in the SAYWP competition by assisting them how to go about the competition.

TOYOTA’s immensely popular Hilux pick-up has received a cosmetic makeover for its 2012 model year, but don’t let the new face fool you – Toyota assures us it will remain just as robust and practical as ever.The bulk of the stylistic changes to the new bakkie occur forwards of the A-pillar – the prominent air scoop remains but it sits upon a new, sculpted bonnet that tapers to a nose more closely reminiscent of the company’s high-end Land Cruiser models – especially those re-styed headlamps and the slatted chrome grille (no doubt directed at higher-spec models). The front bumper has also been revised, as have the rear wings and side mirrors, while redesigned alloy wheels will be offered in both 15- and 17-inch versions.Toyota claims to have made significant improvements to the perceived quality within the new model’s cabin through the use of darker trim colours and the adoption of silver-effect trim elements. The upper facia has been redesigned to accentuate the cabin’s width and a Toyota Touch infotainment system with a 6,1-inch full colour screen will also be offered on certain models.Depending on the market, Toyota has decided to create a stronger differentiation between its workhorse, dual usage and more leisure-orientated models. As such, the Hilux 2012 will overseas be available in four grades: DLX, the new DLX+, SR and SR+ encompassing three body styles, two engines, a choice of manual or automatic transmissions as well as 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. It remains to be seen what the local line-up will look like when the new model debuts around September.The workhorse/dual usage DLX+ model comes in 2WD or 4WD guises powered by a revised version of the company’s 2,5 D-4D powert ra in. Using var iable-nozzle turbocharging, the 2,5 D-4D now develops an additional 18 kW over the current unit for total outputs of 107 kW at 3 600 r/min and 343 N.m of torque at 2 000 r/min. Despite this power increase, the combined cycle fuel consumption has been reduced by 1,0 litres/100 km to 7,3 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions lowered by 26 g/km to 193 g/km. FORD’s Focus has been a brand favourite since its introduction in 1998 with more than 10 million units sold globally to date. The Focus has remained the popular older brother to the Fiesta, even if the latter has claimed much of the limelight since its hugely successful introduction in 2008. The new Focus is launched in SA with two body shapes, and three engines and specification levels; a hatchback and sedan variant offered with either 1.6 or two-litre petrol engines and a diesel option for the three-box.The three levels are the entry level Ambiente, high-spec Trend and a 125kW Sport version only available on the two-litre hatchback.In terms of design, the third generation Focus has completely changed when compared with its predecessor. At the front the new model sports an assertive “grinning” grille and new wrap-around headlights. At the rear the styling is rather tame, at least in the sedan version. The hatchback sports a new rear spoiler which gives it way more sporty appeal over the sedan. Overall it borrows some elements from the Fiesta’s Kinetic design concept, but Ford has enabled the new Focus to come into its own with a unique design to help set itself apart from other models. Ford’s 1.6 engine (available on sedan and hatchback) produces 92kw at 6000rpm with a torque peak of 159Nm at 4000rpm. The two-litre GDi produces 125kW at 6600rpm with a maximum torque figure of 202Nm at 4450rpm for both body styles. The 2.0 TDCi engine, only available in the sedan, produces 120kW at 3750rpm with a torque peak of 340Nm at 2000-3250rpm.The 1.6 powerplant is mated to a five-speed manual transmission while both the petrol and diesel two-litre engines are mated to Ford’s six-speed PowerShift auto.Fuel economy on the hatchback is rated at a claimed 5.9 litres/100km (1.6) and 6.7litres/100km (2.0). Fuel consumption figures for the sedan is rated at a claimed 6.0litres/100km for the 1.6 engine and 6.4litres/100km for the petrol 2.0 Gdi.The fuel economy is much lower on the diesel auto compared to the petrol 2.0, with a claimed fuel consumption of 5.3litres/100km. If you’re really keen on saving yourself trips to the filling station, you could probably consider the 2.0 TDCi. On the road, it feels a lot like Volkwagen’s Golf, though a lot more refined compared to the model it replaces. The ride is great, being a lot more comfortable and forgiving compared to the outgoing model, and in terms of handling it reacts with a gentle shrug to your every attempt to be a lunatic behind the wheel. This is courtesy of Ford’s torque vectoring system that enables weight distribution to be spread from the inner wheel to the outer during cornering. It’s a lot less obvious or intrusive than conventional traction control systems.Having said that, some of the magic of the Focus' predecessor seems to be missing, especially in the steering feedback. The new model seems a little reserved, as if it's determined to deter any boy racers. The new PowerShift Auto is fantastic with seamless gear shifts making it perfect for city or extra urban driving need. It’s a shame that the auto isn’t offered with paddle shifts, though a semi-

automatic option is available in the form of manual gear shift buttons located on the side of the gear stick. Ford’s Focus caters for both road worriers and warriors in terms of its ability to match safety with the oomph needed for a pleasurable ride. Driver, passenger and side airbags are offered as standard across the range, along with ABS and EBD.In the cabin, the Fiesta influence can be seen right away especially with the cloned dials and centre console. The funky four-spoked steering wheel is a great touch as well as the styling on the auto 'box. Ample head and leg room, intuitive controls and a boot that’s capable of swallowing any luggage load are all traits of a great family car. The Focus hatchback has nearly 60 litres less boot space compared to the Volkswagen Golf, but at 316 litres it’s still pretty ample.The 2.0 Sport hatchback’s interior is quite different from the “busy” Fiesta-inspired design and personally I think it’s a lot better, as the piano-black finishes are just the icing on an already great interior designIs there an ST version in the works? Well Ford remains tight lipped on a sportier Focus, though we will see a Fiesta ST model unveiled in 2012. As far as competition goes, the new Focus hatchback will have to face-up against VW’s Golf, Opel’s Astra, Citroen's C4, Toyota's AurisX and Honda’s Civic. The sedan will have to contend with Honda’s Civic sedan, Toyota's Corolla and VW's Jetta.Overall the new model is a perfect example of evolution over revolution. The Focus is a stylish family-oriented sedan and although it’s got a new makeover, it doesn’t skimp on practicality or quality. If you don’t buy one of these, an annoying work mate or a loves-to-rub-it-in-your-face neighbour will, and you’ll kick yourself for not buying it, as it’s quite simply a superb vehicle. The Focus is offered with a five-year or 90 000km service plan, with 20 000km service intervals.Wheels24.co.za

WHILE attending a press function for the new Focus, a Ford representative admitted that the Ford Bantam half-tonner is about to be handed the death knell. The main reason given is that in line with Ford's latest globalisation strategies, in which maximum efficiency of scale is sought, South Africa's Silverton assembly plant outside Pretoria will become a one-platform factory in which only the new Ranger will be built - for local consumption and wide-scale export. Ford could not give an exact date for the end of production, but speculated that it would be around September this year - meaning there should still be stock available until at least the end of the year. The aforementioned globalisation strategy is also expected to spell the end for other unique niche products developed for specific regions, such as Australia's Ford Falcon. Ford's representative would not divulge any details about how the company plans to plug the void left by the Bantam in the popular half-tonne segment, besides saying that they will bring something into the small commercial market. Currently there is no half-tonne Ford bakkie available overseas, besides the outdated Ford Courier that's similar to our Bantam in a number of ways, so unless a replacement is created in Brazil, that other vehicle may just be the Ford Transit Connect panel van, which competes with the VW Caddy in Europe. The death of Bantam spells the end of an era for a vehicle that's almost as South African as pap and wors, considering that the three generations of Bantam that have been on our market since

TODAY’s extended service intervals, while a good thing in most ways, can also mean neglecting servicing altogether and that can prove very expensive in the long run. Even basic jobs such as spark plug changing tend to be forgotten. This is understandable with recommended change intervals of more than 100 000 km in some instances. But it’s not all bad news. When a little old lady (she’d kill me if she heard that!) brought her misfiring Golf to me, a few minutes’ work and renewing the spark plugs got it running sweetly again. If only things were always that simple. You would imagine that such a basic and inevitable part of servicing would be easy on any vehicle, however sophisticated, but one car in particular proves that it just ain’t so. In fact, when I was asked to do a service and plug change on an early V6 Jaguar S-type, I was fortunately too busy to take the job and passed it on to a guy I know who is a bit of a masochist. The offside bank of plugs is underneath the inlet manifold - which has to be removed. The rear bolt tends to become corroded by water from the windscreen and is also a bit awkward to get to. It’s definitely not a job to be rushed because a steel bolt into aluminium threads can easily damage the softer metal when being removed, especially if the vehicle has been neglected. In fact, a prudent mechanic will probably warn you of the danger - and probable cost involved if the worst happens. Whatever the recommended plug change intervals, they should be adhered to. Remember also that on twin-spark engines you’ll incur extra expense when it comes to a plug change, so it’s best to investigate servicing and running costs before buying any vehicle that is slightly exotic or out of the ordinary. Servicing can be horrendously expensive and this is no doubt part of the reason that some owners allow it to lapse. Of course, with a modern, luxury vehicle a full service history is desirable if you wish to sell it. But it is wise to enquire about servicing costs when buying. You will not get much change out of R6000 for some car services. In fact, it is well worth investigating one of those special service schemes. They certainly save you a good deal of cash on services, but remember that you will be paying at least a couple of hundred bucks a month for the privilege, whether having a service done or not. Like plug-change intervals, I feel that manufacturers tend to be on the optimistic side with cambelt and camchain changes. Some break at only half the distance suggested, leading to extensive damage, while some go on for a great deal longer. I suppose a lot depends on how the belt or chain was fitted, tensioned and even the way the car was driven and maintained. The cause of rapid wear or breakage need not be down to the belt or chain itself. Tensioners can fail, idler pulleys break or seize. Study a workshop manual before beginning the job. Remember that with a belt or chain removed it is essential that crankshaft, camshaft and distributor drive do not move. - Star Motoring

DURBAN’s Sapref refinery - the largest in Southern Africa - has no intention of shutting down during the countrywide fuel workers' strike, although several pumps in Gauteng have already dried up. Oil companies wouldn’t comment on possible fuel shortages, directing further enquiries to Shell SA Refining spokesman Dennis Matsane, and BP Southern Africa spokeswoman Glenda Zvenyika - neither of whom were available for comment. Sapref is a joint venture between Shell and BP, and provides 35 percent of South Africa’s refining capacity.Fuel Retailers' Association chief executive Reggie Sibiya said he was concerned that more petrol stations could run dry during the strike. Sibiya urged motorists to be prepared and not panic. About 70 000 fuel workers from the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood, and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu) and the General Industries Workers Union of SA (Giwusa) joined the strike as it entered its third week on Monday. They were demanding a minimum salary of R6 000 a month and a 40-hour work week. Ceppwawu policy co-ordinator John Appolis said hundreds of companies would be affected, including Sasol, Engen, BP, Caltex, Total, Adcock Ingram and Tiger Foods. Giwusa has members in the pharmaceutical, glass, chemical and fast-moving consumer goods, fibre and particle board industries. The union's president, Charles Phahla, said workers marched to the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg. About 170 000 engineering and steel workers from the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), the Metal and Electrical Workers Union (Mewusa), the United Association of SA (Uasa), Solidarity, and the SA Equity Workers Association (Saewa) downed tools two wweks previously. That strike has been resolved. They were demanding wage increases from 10-13 percent and a ban on labour brokers. Police said violence had erupted resulting in several deaths and people being injured. In Lydenburg, most pumps were still operational on Monday 18 July, though some filling stations reported that they may soon run out of diesel. The bigger trucks could fill up their huge tanks with up to 1000 litres of diesel in one go, so the demand is high. Certain grades like MRP (red nozzle) where demand is less, are still available. The Highlands Panorama News urges motorists to keep their vehicles filled up, as supply might take a few days to catch up, once the strike is called off. Also, if your car does not have a catalytic convertor, one tank of MRP would not harm your engine, provided that the red nozzle fits your car, but beware, if you have a cat, the MRP will destroy it. - Sapa and Andre Coetzee.

Activities Approved: Activity no. 1(e) listed in Regulation R. 387 of 21 April 2006 “The construction of facilities or infrastructure, including associated structures or infrastructure, for any process or activity which requires a permit or licence in terms of legislation governing the generation or release of emissions, pollution, effluent or waste and which is not identified in Government Notice No. R.386 of 2006.” and

Activity no. 1(j) listed in Regulation R.387 of April 2006 “The construction of facilities or infrastructure, including associated structures or infrastructure for the bulk transportation of dangerous goods using pipelines, funiculars or conveyors with a throughput capacity of 50 tons or 50 cubic meters or more per day”.

Background to Project: The proposed tailings storage facility and associated infrastructure will cover a total footprint of 8 hectares with a final tailings storage height of approximately 35m. The following infrastructure will be established as part of the proposed development: • A 4m wide road that will allow for light vehicle travel and equipment delivery;• A clean and dirty water separation facility for the prevention of unnecessary deterioration of water resources; and• The return water management system for the containment of contaminated water.

Record of Decision: The Department approved the project in terms of the National Environmental Management , 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) on the 09th July 2011

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the position of Explosives Coordinator at Modikwa Platinum Mine, situated in the Eastern Bushveld near Burgersfort. The incumbent will report to the Safety Health & Environmental Leader. Requirements:• Grade 12 or equivalent NQF 4 qualification• Course for Inspector of Explosives• On appointment need to obtain Certificate in explosives or Blasting Technology• Commercial Explosives System (CES)• Explosives Ordnance Course (mod A & B )• Post Blasting Investigation Techniques (Forensic investigation of blasting incident scenes)• Advanced Computer Literacy in Microsoft environment• Course in Explosives Control• Code 8 Drivers License

Technical Work Responsibilities:• Effective legal compliance and governance regarding explosives• Effective and efficient Explosives Control systems• Support of the overall operational management of the operation• Zero Tolerance on all safety initiatives• Explosives budget and cost control• Implement and sustain the Modikwa Explosives Startegy • Submit reports for the operation to stakeholders as required• Represent operation on relevant forums• Ensure explosives licenses and permits are regularly reviewed, updated and resubmitted to the CIE and DMR licensing, approval or re-issuing.• Independent review of serious incidents and all accidents (Explosives related)• Implement short term control measures to prevent over expenditure, over ordering and wastage• Develop and manage explosive department talent in the operation• Source explosives specialist as required to support achieving operation objectives• Conduct periodic full discipline audits and procedural reviews of all protocol pertaining to explosives• Decide on best practice, operation risk profile based on SHE internal audits and risk assessments, Safety, Health and Environment initiatives and programmes, codes of practice based on risk assessments and systems audits

Work DescriptionThe Explosives Coordinator will be the legally appointed representative and the custodian of explosives utilisation at Modikwa. His role supports the role of the Explosives Licensee (Business Leader), with the responsibility and accountability of ensuring legal compliance, continuos improvement and the effectiveness of the Explosives Management System. The appointee will be responsible for occasional liasons with the Divisional Explosives Engineer to ensure that all Divisional directives are implemented and sustained. The appointed person will be the contact person between the operation, the local Inspector of Explosives, department of Mineral Resources, manufacturers and suppliers of explosives.
