Data Integrity Check XP for the XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 user guide 9

1 Overview of Data Integrity Check

Function OverviewData Integrity Check insures validity and protects Oracle data stored on the array. Data IntegrityCheck has the following two purposes (see Figure 1):

• Preventing invalid data from being written to the array

When data is stored on the disk array, the data is transferred through many paths and can becomeinvalid. Data Integrity Check ensures that the Oracle data is valid before it is written to the diskarray. If the data is invalid, Data Integrity Check prevents the invalid Oracle data from being

written. Consequently, it provides high data reliability and increases data management efficiency byreducing costs and saving the time and resources required for the recovery of invalid Oracle data.

• Protecting existing data in the subsystem

Once Oracle data is stored on the disk array, Data Integrity Check protects the data from beingdeleted or updated by mistake. This is accomplished by checking the data to be stored on the samevolume. If data created in another application is being written to a volume where Oracle data isstored, an error is generated.

Overview of Data Integrity Check10

Figure 2 shows the Data Integrity Check components and their functions for Oracle data check. Forrequirements (such as product name or versions), refer to ”Data Integrity Check OperatingEnvironments and Prerequisites” on page 11.

Figure 2 Data Integrity Check components

Data Integrity Check and RAID ManagerData Integrity Check is configured and operated using Data Integrity Check commands in RAIDManager XP. For RAID Manager operations, refer to the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP User’sGuide .

You must specify the volume to be checked, and the type of check using RAID Manager (the typesare different depending on versions). The files (constructed in RAW volume) that are checked are:Data, Redo log and Control. If data is written from the host server to the array, the data check isinitiated by channel adapters (CHIPs) that support Data Integrity Check.

NOTE: The check is not started when the data is read.

When invalid data is detected, the error is reported from the CHIPs to RAID Manager, and a log(syslog) is generated from RAID Manager.

Data Integrity Check XP for the XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 user guide 11

2 Data Integrity Check Operating Environments andPrerequisites

Data Integrity Check requires the following:

•  A Command View XP array (see ”Requirements for the array” on page 11)

•  A Host server that supports an Oracle database and has RAID Manager installed (see”Requirements for the Host Server” on page 11)

•  An Oracle-data validation service (see ”Restrictions and Conventions” on page 12

Requirements for the arrayData Integrity Check requires a properly configured array and a channel adapter with the correctmicrocode.

Channel Adapter (CHIP)Data Integrity Check supports the following CHIP types:

• DKC-F510-32HS (16 ports/PCB)

• DKC-F510-16HS (8 ports/PCB)

CAUTION: If CHIPs are used that do not support Data Integrity Check are used with CHIPs that dosupport Data Integrity Check, the validity of the data is not checked when the data processed withthe unsupported CHIPs. HP recommends you to update all the CHIPs so that they would supportData Integrity Check.

Data Integrity Check License KeyYou need to install the license key for Data Integrity Check on the array using Remote Web Console. To install the license key, refer to the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide .

Requirements for the Host ServerYou will need the following items installed on the host server:

Fibre channel interface A fibre channel connection is required between the host server and the array.

RAID ManagerRAID Manager version 01-16-03/05 or better is required.

Operating SystemOne of the following operating systems is required.

Data Integrity Check Operating Environments and Prerequisites12

• Sun® Solaris™ 8 or better. For further information on the Solaris™ platform, refer to theHP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide for XP12000/XP10000

• HP-UX 11.0 or better. For further information on the HP-UX platform, refer to theHP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide for XP12000/XP10000

•  Windows 2000 Advanced Server (Service Pack 3 or later)•  AIX 5L Version 5.1 ML3

Oracle databaseOne of the following Oracle databases is required.

• Oracle8i

• Oracle9i

• Oracle9i Release2

NOTE: Oracle database needs to be constructed in RAW volume. Also, you need to setDB_BLOCK_CHECKSUM parameter to TRUE.

Logical Volume ManagerOne of the following Logical Volume Manager versions is required.

•  VxVM (for Solaris™)

• LVM (for HP-UX )

• LVM (for AIX )

NOTE:  Versions other than above may be supported in the future enhancement. For the

latest information, contact your HP account support representative.

Restrictions and Conventions When you use Data Integrity Check, or when Data Integrity Check is installed, the followingrestrictions and conventions are applied.

For arrays:• You cannot downgrade the microcode (DKCMAIN program) version.

• You cannot replace an existing CHIP which supports Data Integrity Check with a CHIP whichdoes not support Data Integrity Check.

• If you uninstall the Data Integrity Check license key, you need to delete the settings of the volumeto be checked by Data Integrity Check from RAID Manager in advance.

• The setting of Data Integrity Check can only be deleted using RAID Manager.

Data Integrity Check XP for the XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 user guide 13

• If you want to change the configuration of the LDEVs (for example, decreasing the set LDEVs,creating CVs), you need to delete the setting of Data Integrity Check using RAID Manager first, and then perform the change.

For host servers:• Do not write data other than Oracle data to the Oracle data check volume (LU). If multiple paths

are set to the same volume (LU), check if those paths are not all set as the target of Oracle datacheck.

• Do not set the data storage location of the Data or Control file and the Redo log file to the samevolume (LU).

• Do not store Oracle data of different block sizes in a volume (LU). Only write data of the sameblock size to a volume (LU).

•  When you change the configuration of logical volume manager to the volume (LU) which is setas the target of the Oracle data check, you need to delete the settings of the target LUs anddisable the Oracle check function (Data Integrity Check) once. After changing the configuration, you need to enable Data Integrity Check again and reset the LUs which are the target of thecheck.

•  When you restore the Oracle data which was backed up before Data Integrity Check wasinstalled on the array, you need to disable Data Integrity Check.

• To set the volume (LU) of the array as the target of the Oracle data check, you need to have aCHIP that supports Data Integrity Check.
