Audio Physic gehört mit Sicherheit zuden mir bekannten renommiertestenLautsprecher-Produzenten. Das giltnicht nur für Deutschland, sondern ohneÜbertreibung weltweit. Auf Anhieb fälltmir die "Caldera" ein, die selbst in denVereinigten Staaten höchste Anerken-nung fand und sich nicht einmal hintergut beleumundeten Wandlern wie derWilson Puppy 3.1 oder 5.1E zu ver-stecken brauchte. Das liegt nun einigeJahre zurück. Viele neue Modelle sindinzwischen hinzugekommen. Verant-wortlich für die Entwicklung in der edlenManufaktur Audio Physic aus dem sau-erländischen Brilon zeichnet ManfredDiestertich. In der Szene ist er keinUnbekannter und ist unter anderemauch verantwortlich als Entkopplungs-künstler für die klangfördernde String-technologie. Nach der größeren Schwester "Avanti 5"gibt es eine Neuauflage der "Scorpio",Modellvaraiante II. Auf den ersten Blicksieht sie aus wie eine zu heiß gewa-schene Avanti (Paarpreis um 10.000Euro). Mit 4.500 Euro kostet die ScorpioII nur knapp die Hälfte des größerenSchwestermodells. Mit einer Gesamt-höhe von 110 cm und 22 cm Breite wirkt

die Scorpio zwar schlank, aber die sorg-fältige Auswahl der Hoch- bis Tieftönerlässt bereits das gesteckte Ziel erahnen.Alle Chassis sind der Avanti sehr ähn-lich. Im Hochtonbereich arbeitet aller-dings eine Gewebekalotte, im Mittel-tonbereich ist es der "Hyper HolographicCone Midrange". Die Besonderheit istder Kunststoffkorb, der zusätzlich miteinem äußeren Metallkorb umgeben ist.Der innere Korb soll Schwingungendämpfen, der äußere sorgt für die nötigeStabilität und leitet gleichzeitig dieWärme ab. Vier seitlich abstrahlende Tieftöner jeLautsprecher sorgen für eine gewaltigeMembranfläche. Denn selbige ist in ihrerWirkung bekanntlich durch nichts zuersetzen. Diese Treiber, je zwei auf jederSeite, arbeiten im Push-Push-Betrieb.Auf diese Weise will Diestertich möglicheResonanzen der 18 cm-Basschassisverhindern. Das Terminal wird in Shot-Gun- und gegen Aufpreis auch in Bi-Wiring-Ausführung geliefert. Ich bevor-zuge Bi-Wiring, weil ich im Laufe derJahre damit die besten klanglichenErfahrungen gemacht habe. Außerdembringt Bi-Wiring leichte Vorteile bezüg-lich der Dynamik.Da die Scorpio II in der Breite sehrschmal ausfällt, steht sie auf Querstre-ben, in die Spikes zur Justage eingelas-sen sind. können als alternative Unterlagezum Bodenbelag dienen, wobeifestangezogene Spikes Pflichtsind.Fein-Tuning ist im Hause AudioPhysic immer schon ein festerBestandteil des Gesamtkonzepts.So wundert es mich nicht, dassselbst das Anschluss-Terminal indieser Hinsicht nicht verschontbleibt. Audio Physic spricht sogarvon einem "Vibration ControlTerminal" mit der Abkürzung VCT.Die Besonderheit besteht auseiner elastischen Lagerung desTerminals. Diese soll eine wir-kungsvolle Entkopplung der An-schlussklemmen vom Gehäusemit sich bringen. Als Anschlusssind Kabelschuhe, aber auchBananenstecker möglich. DieAufstellung der Boxen richtet sichgrundsätzlich nach der Zimmer-größe. Da mir die Räumlichkeitenüber die Jahre bekannt sind,bereitet die optimale Positionkeine Schwierigkeiten mehr.

zwölf Titeln herausgekommen ist, grenztan Zauberei. Ohne Mischpult zu arbei-ten, ist fast unmöglich. Doch ThomasLöffler hat es geschafft, den Indoor-Poolfür den nötigen Hall zu nutzen; der Kellermusste beispielsweise Clubgefühl ver-mitteln. Wahrlich eine Meisterleistung,was er da im September 2006 vollbrachthat. Und wer jetzt noch das Glück hat,diese Musik über die Scorpio II zu hören,wird begeistert sein. Besonders bemer-kenswert sind die natürliche Akustik unddie tolle Atmosphäre, die ich in dieserForm über die Wandler aus Brilon nurselten gehört habe. Und wenn, dann nurmit Lautsprechern, die erheblich teurersind als die Scorpio II. Vom ersten biszum zwölften Stück nimmt mich diesecharismatische Box an die audiophileHand und ich begebe mich auf einemusikalische Weltreise. Die drei Back-round-Vokalisten aus Zimbabwe gebendem ganzen Album noch eine besondersbetörende afrikanische Note. Ich bin mirim Klaren darüber, dass ich diesesHörerlebnis in erster Linie dem hohenAuflösungsvermögen der Scorpio II ver-danke, die mich zudem mit ihrer authen-tischen Wiedergabe davon überzeugthat, einen in allen Belangen überzeu-genden Lautsprecher zu hören, dessenKonkurrenz aus meiner Sicht - selbstweltweit gesehen - gering sein dürfte.Um die bisherigen Eindrücke nochmalszu vertiefen, greife ich zu John LeeHooker. Die CD "Chill out" mit den Songs"Deep Blue Sea", "Serves Me Right ToSuffer" (Medley mit van Morrison), "TooYoung", "Talkin' The Blues" und "IfYou've Never Been in Love" verschafft

einer Box überprüfen. Die stimmgewalti-ge Power-Frau erlebe ich gleich imersten Titel so lebensecht, dass mir fastder Atem stockt. Natürlich habe ich dieganze CD durchgehört und bin überwäl-tigt, wie die geballte Energie ihrerStimme von der Scorpio II wiedergege-ben wird.Das hatte ich der formschönen Wand-lersäule nicht zugetraut. Bei der näch-sten CD-Auswahl schaue ich schongenauer hin. Mir fällt der Name HansTheessing ein, der mir bei seinenAufnahmen hinsichtlich der räumlichenAbbildung immer sehr gut gefallen hat.Der gebürtige Holländer mit dänischemPass hat seinen Wohnsitz in Österreich.Seine Bandbreite reicht von Blues,Country, Jazz, Weltmusik bis zu kom-merziellem Pop. Als Gitarrist hat er sichinzwischen weltweit einen Namengemacht. Seine Vielseitigkeit und Rei-feentwickung verdienen hohe Anerken-nung. Denn er ist ein ewig Reisender,auf allen Kontinenten zu Hause, immerauf der Suche nach neuen Wegen. So istauch die spezielle Aufnahmetechnik von"Slow Train" nachvollziehbar. Wo andereMusiker gute Tonstudios aufsuchen,geht Hans Theessing lieber in Kirchenund arbeitet mit hochwertigsten Mi-krophonen. Für die Aufnahme der "SlowTrain"-CD hatte er eine geniale Idee. Ermietete in der Südsteiermark (Grenz-gebiet Österreich zu Slowenien) mit sei-ner Band ein Riesenhaus mit achtAufnahmeräumen. Toningenieur Tho-mas Löffler nutzte die unterschiedlichenRäume, um je nach Bedarf die richtigeAtmosphäre einzufangen. Was bei den

mir wiederholt sowie letztendlich dieGewissheit, einen dieser echt rarenAusnahmelautsprecher zu hören. In derStimme von Lee Hooker spürt manHingabe und Leidenschaft. Das vermit-telt die Scorpio II mehr als glaubhaft.Was andere Lautsprecher sehr mono-ton, fast teilnahmslos abbilden, höre ichmit der Scorpio II nun anders. Sie trumpftauf mit Lebendigkeit, vermittelt derartviele Gefühle, was bei anderen Her-stellern mit Sicherheit Frustrationen her-vorrufen wird. Mein Pflichtprogramm mitder Burmester-Vorführ-CDII ist dannauch noch an der Reihe. Von RadkaToneff (Frauenstimme), konzertanteBarockmusik, das Saxophon von BenWebster, die Orgelmusik aus der Sym-

phonie Nr. 9 (Wiener Symphonie-Orchester), Mariengesänge von Händel- Sophie von Otter und schließlich "An-other Brick in the Wall" von Pink Floydlassen für mich nur eine Einschätzungzu: Die Scorpio II ist ein überragenderLautsprecher.Die Avanti V ist zwar 13 kg schwerer undinsgesamt voluminöser als die kleinereScorpio II. In großen Räumen mag dasvon Vorteil sein. Doch wenn nicht unbe-dingt saalfüllende Lautstärke gefragt ist,steht die schlankere Scorpio II bereits für

ein großes, erwachsenes Klangbild.Dabei ist sie schnell und flexibel.Grundsätzlich hat die Avanti mehr Luftzum Atmen, klingt souveräner. Auch beiÜberlautstärke ist ihr keine Anstrengunganzumerken. Allen Avanti-Fans, die sichdie 10.000 Euro nicht leisten können, seigesagt, mit der Scorpio II bietet AudioPhysic eine mehr als interessanteAlternative. Die Lautsprecherchassissind perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt.Die Tonalität ist extrem ausgewogen.Plastizität bei gleichzeitig extrem homo-gener Wiedergabe sind weitere Plus-punkte. Einerseits kann die Scorpio IIfeingeistig, hochauflösend aufspielen,andererseits versteht sie es aber auchmächtige, druckvolle Klangbilder zu pro-duzieren. Im Grunde besitzt sie dieFähigkeit, sich punktgenau anzupassen,je nachdem, was ihr abverlangt wird. Sieist ein Lautsprecher, der mit jeder Art vonMusik bestens zurechtkommt. Ein audio-philer Auftritt gelingt ihr überragend,wenn der Toningenieur seine Sache gutgemacht hat. Selbst Großorchester gibtdie Scorpio II in meinen Hörräumen miteiner Dynamik wieder, die Live-Atmosphäre versprüht. Bei fulminanten,komplexen Passagen behält sie stets dieÜbersicht, bleibt stimmig und vor allemmusikalisch. Mit diesem doch kleinenGehäuse bringt man diese antritts-schnelle Urgewalt nicht automatisch inVerbindung. Die perfekte Raumabbil-dung und besonders die Tiefenstaf-felung, die jeden Winkel des Aufnah-meraums ausleuchtet, sind so gut, dassmir nichts mehr fehlt.

In den oberen Frequenzbereichen sorgtder Kalottenhochtöner mit Gewebemem-bran für bestmögliche Auflösung. DerMitteltöner ragt aufgrund seiner neuenTechnologie besonders heraus. DerBassbereich ist trocken, stimmig undmarkant, aber nie überproportional groß.Da die Scorpio II auf jede kleine Ver-änderung reagiert, möchte ich Klassik-Liebhaber, die fast ausschließlichStreicher hören, bei der Kabelwahl raten,mit Bedacht vorzugehen. In jedem Fallwürde ich analytisch, präzise klingendeKabel meiden und mehr neutrale biswarm abbildende ausprobieren. Solltedann noch ein passender Röhren-verstärker ins Spiel kommen, werdenauch diese Hörer unendlich glücklichsein. Für mich ist die Scorpio II einegeglückte Synthese aus den Geschwis-tern Tempo und Avanti. Die Zielsetzung,mit der Scorpio II - unter Berücksichtungder genannten Einschränkungen - klang-lich sehr nahe an die Avanti V heranzu-kommen, ist Audio Physic erschreckendgut gelungen. Manches Mal hatte ichsogar den Eindruck, sie sei die bessereBox von beiden.Die Scorpio II hat mit entsprechenderElektronik und Verkabelung ein überra-gendes Klangpotential. Der Begriff "HighEnd" beginnt für mich an der Schwelleder sogenannten Referenzklasse. Undtrotzdem heiße ich diese Box im Clubder ernstzunehmenden High-End-Laut-sprecher herzlich willkommen. DiesesGütesiegel für 4.500 Euro pro Paar warfür mich lange Zeit undenkbar. Denn dieScorpio II hat in der Summe ihrer positi-

ven Eigenschaften diese Würdigung ver-dient. Sie entlarvt jeden Zuspieler oderVerstärker, deckt gnadenlos Stärken undSchwächen der übrigen Komponentenauf.Die Philosophie von Audio Physic istunüberhörbar. Neue Modelle oder ihreNachfolger werden nicht mehr kompro-misslos auf noch höhere Auflösunggetrimmt. Ab sofort haben Natürlichkeitund auch wichtige tonale Abstimmungenscheinbar den höheren Stellenwert.Damit bricht Audio Physic für mich ein-deutig mit der bisherigen Tradition. DerLautsprecher Scorpio II ist nicht nur eineinnovative Entwicklung. Das ästhetischeDesign und erlesene Verarbeitungs-qualität, wo man auch hinschaut, rundendas überaus positive Gesamtbild ab.Dieser Lautsprecher ist nicht nur einAlleskönner, sondern im Speziellen einechtes Highlight - hier hat Audio Physicalles auf den berühmten Punkt gebracht.Ihr glanzvolles Klangbild ist wie eine

by Stefan RüterAudio Physic is without a doubt one ofthe most renowned loudspeakerproducers I know of. I'm not exaggera-ting when I state that this does not justapply to Germany, but worldwide. Its“Caldera” first comes to mind, a loud-speaker that was showered with thehighest of praise, even in the UnitedStates, and never had to hide behindreputable models like the Wilson Puppy3.1 or 5.1E. That was a few years agonow. Since then many new models haveentered the market. The man respon-sible for development at Audio Physic,the quality manufacturer based in Brilon,Germany, is Manfred Diestertich. He isnot a stranger to the loudspeaker scene,being, alongside his many otherachievements, the decoupling expertresponsible for string technology,promoting sound to the maximum.Following in the footsteps of its bigsister, the “Avanti V”, the “Scorpio”model has been redesigned, giving usversion II. At first glance it looks like anAvanti (which costs 10,000 Euro perpair) that has shrunk in the wash. At aprice of 4500 Euro, the Scorpio II costsjust under half as much as its big sistermodel. Indeed, the Scorpio is ratherslim, with a total height of 110cm andwidth of 22cm, but its carefully-selectedassortment of tweeters and woofers

already gives an impression of theproduct goal. All of the Scorpio's driversare extremely similar to those of theAvanti, with a soft dome forming part ofits tweeter system and the "HyperHolographic Cone Midrange" used in themidrange area. It boasts the specialfeature of a plastic basket, which isadditionally encased in an outside metalbasket. The inside basket is designed todampen vibrations, while the outerbasket simultaneously provides thenecessary stability and dissipates theheat.Four side-firing woofers per loudspeakerdeliver an enormous membrane surface,which, as is well known, has an effectthat just cannot be substituted. Thereare two of these drivers on each side ofthe speaker, working in push-pushconfiguration. Diestertich uses thismethod to prevent any possible reso-nances of the 7'’ woofer driver. Theterminal is delivered suitable for shotgunwiring, but can also be made suitable forbi-wiring at an extra cost. Personally, Iprefer bi-wiring, which has given me thebest sound experiences over the years,whilst also offering slight advantageswhere dynamics are concerned.Given that the Scorpio II is extremelyslim, it is mounted on cross bars intowhich the spikes are inserted for adjust-ment. You can also use a granite slab orhardwood board as an alternative to

standing the speaker on the floor,but firmly tightened spikes mustbe used if you choose to do so.Fine-tuning has always been akey element of Audio Physic'soverall design concept. Ittherefore comes as no surprise tome that even the connectionterminal has undergone this fine-tuning treatment. In fact, AudioPhysic even speaks of a VCT,the abbreviation for its “VibrationControl Terminal”. This specialfeature involves the terminalbeing fitted with elasticsuspension, designed to ensurethat the binding posts of theterminal are effectively decoupledfrom the cabinet. Both spadesand banana plugs can be usedas connectors. How theloudspeakers are positionedbasically depends on the size ofthe room. Seeing as I havebecome familiar with room sizesand spaces over the years,finding the ideal layout no longerposes a problem.

My CommentsAfter successfully connecting theloudspeakers I turned to my CDshelf and picked a case atrandom for the warm-up trial. Thelucky winner was a CD by TinaTurner, “Simply the Best” to beprecise. I hadn’t listened to this old,but yet eternally young rock lady

for donkey's years. Nevertheless, herprominent voice would be ideal fortesting out the dynamics of aloudspeaker. Hearing the strong-voicedpower woman as if she were standingright next to me practically took mybreath away, and that was just the firstsong. Of course, I continued listeninguntil I had finished the whole CD andwas overwhelmed at how the Scorpio IIreproduced the concentrated energythat is Tina Turner’s voice.I hadn’t expected such a result fromsuch exquisitely designed pillars ofsound. I put in a little more effort whenchoosing my next CD, closely examiningthe candidates. Then the name HansTheessink came to mind, an artist whohad managed to impress me with thespatial imaging of his recordings. Thenative-born Dutchman has a Danishpassport and lives in Austria. Hismusical spectrum ranges from blues tocountry, jazz and world music, rightthrough to commercial pop, and he hasreally made a name for himselfworldwide as a guitarist. He is worthy ofhigh praise for the versatility andmaturity that he has developed over theyears as a constant voyager, at homeon all continents and always on thelookout for new routes. This is mirroredin the special recording engineeringused on “Slow Train”.While other musicians seek out goodrecording studios, Hans Theessinkprefers to frequent churches, puttingmicrophones of the highest quality touse. He had an absolute brainwavewhen recording his album “Slow Train”.He and his band travelled to SouthernStyria, a region on the Austrian-Slovenian border, where they rented a

huge house with eight recording rooms.Sound engineer Thomas Löffler usedthe various rooms to capture each of theambiences required. The twelve tracksthat emerged from this method are asclose to magic as you can get. It'spractically impossible to work without amixing desk, but Thomas Löffler carriedit off, using the indoor pool as the hallthat was needed, while, for example, thecellar was chosen to give a club-likefeeling. The final product that resultedfrom this project in September 2006 isnothing short of a masterpiece. Anyonelucky enough to listen to this musicthrough the Scorpio II can’t help but beenthusiastic. The natural acoustics andwonderful ambiences deserve a specialmention, reaching levels that I have onlyrarely experienced with other loud-speakers from the Brilon-basedmanufacturer and even then, only withloudspeakers considerably moreexpensive than the Scorpio II. From thefirst track right through to the twelfth,this charismatic loudspeaker grabs mymusic-loving hand and guides me on amusical journey around the world. Thethree Zimbabwean backing vocalistsadd a particularly charming touch ofAfrica to the entire album. I’m certainthat this audio experience is primarilydown to the high resolution performanceachieved by the Scorpio II, which,alongside its authentic sound repro-duction, convinced me that I waslistening to a loudspeaker that isconvincing in all respects and that, in myopinion, can barely be challenged, evenon an international scale. My listeningexperience didn’t stop there, and next Igrabbed a John Lee Hooker CD tofurther develop my first impressions of

the Scorpio II. His “Chill Out” Album,including songs such as “Deep BlueSea”, “Serves Me Right to Suffer" (amedley with Van Morrison), "TooYoung", "Talkin’ The Blues” and “IfYou’ve Never Been In Love" reassertedand even confirmed my assurance that Iwas listening to one of those truly rareexceptional loudspeakers. I could feelthe commitment and passion in LeeHooker’s voice, which the Scorpio IIreproduced at a quality beyond belief.What seems to sound very monotonousand almost lethargic through otherloudspeakers sounds different whenplayed through the Scorpio II. It puts ona lively show, releasing a multitude offeelings which will surely lead tofrustration on the part of other manu-facturers. After this, it's time for some

compulsory listening: my BurmesterDemo CD II is next in line. Listening tothe female singer Radka Toneff,Baroque concerto music, Ben Websteron the saxophone, organ music fromSymphony No. 9 (by the ViennaSymphony Orchestra), Marian Cantatasby Handel, sung by Sophie von Otterand finally “Another Brick in the Wall” byPink Floyd led me to one sole conclusion:the Scorpio II is a loudspeaker in a class ofits own.The Avanti V is indeed 13kg heavier andaltogether more voluminous than the smallerScorpio II. This may be an advantage in

larger rooms, but when a hall-fillingvolume is not necessarily required, theslimmer Scorpio II is the ideal model foran ample and mature sound, with theadded bonus of being fast and flexible.The Avanti basically has more breathingspace and a more sovereign sound to it,effortlessly reaching even the highestvolumes. But here’s a pearl of wisdomfor all Avanti fans who cannot afford tofork out 10,000 Euro: with the Scorpio II,Audio Physic are offering an alternativethat is far more than just interesting. Theloudspeaker drivers form a perfectpartnership and you won't find a morebalanced tonality. An additional pluspoint is the degree of plasticity in placealongside an extremely homogenoussound reproduction. While the Scorpio IIhas the ability to play in a sophisticatedmanner with high resolution, it also fullyunderstands what it means to blast outpowerful and punchy sounds. It hasfundamentally mastered the chameleonability, precisely adapting to whatever isrequired of it. It’s a loudspeaker that isthe best of friends with all types ofmusic. And if a sound engineer hasdone his homework and produced agood piece of music, the Scorpio II willperform it in an outstanding manner thatwill please all music lovers. Itreproduced my big band CD with suchdynamics that I thought the musicianswere playing live in the room. It alwayskeeps track of intense, complexpassages, remaining harmonious and,above all, musical. Indeed, an elementalforce attacking at high speed does notautomatically come to mind when youlook at its small cabinet. I find theperfect spatial sound image andespecially the fully-balanced bassresponse, which illuminates all nooksand crannies of the recording studio,simply so amazing that nothing seemsto be lacking.

The soft dome tweeter ensures the bestpossible resolution in the upperfrequency ranges, the midrange driverstands out as a result of its newtechnology and the woofer is dry,harmonious and prominent, but neverdisproportionately overpowering. Giventhat the Scorpio II reacts to everyglimpse of a change, I wouldrecommend that classical music lovers,who listen almost exclusively to stringmusic, think carefully when choosingtheir cable. I would definitely avoidchoosing analytic, precise-soundingcables and instead try out somethingwith a more neutral to warm soundreproduction. If these listeners can alsoget hold of a suitable tube amplifier,then you won't be able to wipe thesmiles off their faces. As far as I’mconcerned, the Scorpio II is a successfulsynthesis of two of its siblings, theTempo and the Avanti. Audio Physic’saim to give the Scorpio II a sound asclose as possible to that of the Avanti V,whilst taking the aforementionedrestrictions into account, has reachedextraordinary levels of success. Isometimes even got the impression thatthe Scorpio II was the more superiorloudspeaker of the two.With the appropriate electronicequipment and connection the Scorpio IIoffers outstanding sound potential. Inmy opinion, the notion of “high-end”products starts at the threshold of theso-called reference class. Nevertheless,I am delighted to welcome the Scorpio IIinto the club of high-end loudspeakersthat should always be taken seriously.For a long time it seemed unthinkablethat I would ever bestow such an honourupon speakers that cost just 4500 Europer pair. However, when you put all ofits positive features together, theScorpio II is certainly worthy of suchspecial treatment. It exposes each and

every music player or amplifier,mercilessly revealing the strengths andweaknesses of any other componentsand devices.The Audio Physic philosophy isunmistakable.
