Character biography
A character acts;
She does something.
Dramatic Conflict• When a character is prevented from
getting something she wants. • Action is the result of conflict: I want,
I cannot have, therefore I act.• I try to remove the obstacle so I can
get what I want.
Dramatic ActionWhen something happens - an event - that makes or permits something else to happen - another event. Action is two ‘something happenings,’ one leading to the other.
• An event is a concrete occurrence that takes place in time and space among characters. (But what if there’s only one character?)• Find the first event, then the second event,
then the connection between the two. • The connection is the action, distinct from
the events. When we name the connection between two events, we name the action.
1st event: I say, “How are you?"
2nd event: You respond, “Fine, thank you."
Connection: I am greeting you.
1st event: I call you a 混蛋 .
2nd event: You hit me.
3rd event: I hit you back.
Connection: We are fighting.
1st event: He goes to kiss her.
2nd event: She puts her lips next to his.
Connection: They are kissing, or making out, or 缩颈 .
1st event: He goes to kiss her.
2nd event: She pushes him away and says “What are you doing?!”
Connection: He is courting (求爱 ) her; she is rejecting him.
