Esmeralda captures the hearts of many men, including thoseof Captain Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire , but especiallyQuasimodo and his adoptive father, Archdeacon Claude Frollo . Frollis torn between his obsessive lust and the rules of the church. eorders Quasimodo to !idnap her, but the hunchbac! is captured byPhoebus and his guards, who save Esmeralda. "he followingday, Quasimodo is sentenced to be #ogged and turned on the pillory for one hour, followedby another hour$s public e%posure. e calls for water. Esmeralda, seeing his thirst,approaches the public stoc!s and o&ers him a drin! of water. 't saves him, and she captureshis heart.

Esmeralda is later charged with the attempted murder of Phoebus, whom Frollo actuallyattempted to !ill in (ealousy after seeing him trying to seduce Esmeralda, and is tortured andsentenced to death by hanging. As she is being led to the gallows , Quasimodo swings downby the bell rope of )otre *ame and carries her o& to the cathedral under the law ofsanctuary , temporarily protecting her from arrest .

Frollo later informs Gringoire that the Court of Parlement has voted to remove Esmeralda$sright to sanctuary so she can no longer see! shelter in the church and will be ta!en from thechurch and !illed. Clopin, the !ing of the "ruands +criminals of Paris , hears the news fromGringoire and rallies the "ruands to charge the cathedral and rescue Esmeralda.

-hen Quasimodo sees the "ruands, he assumes they are there to hurt Esmeralda, so hedrives them o&. i!ewise, he thin!s the /ing$s men want to rescue her, and tries to helpthem 0nd her. 1he is rescued by Frollo and her phony husband Gringoire. 2ut after yetanother failed attempt to win her love, Frollo betrays Esmeralda by handing her to the troopsand watches while she is being hanged.

Quasimodo bellows out in despair and grabs Frollo by the nec!. olding him up in the air,Quasimodo sighs with grief and then throws Frollo down to his death. oo!ing at aEsmerelda hanging o& in the distance and Frollo$s wrangled corpse down below, Quasimodocries out3 4"here is everything ' ever loved54 "hen,Quasimodo is never seen again. 6earslater when a gravedigger stumbles across a Esmerelda$s remains, he 0nds the s!eleton of ahunchbac! curled around her.

SUMMARY

Events unfold around these characters. TheDuke ofBuckingham sets his sights on the married Queen Anne of

France, but she sends him back to England. Feeling bad, shegives him a pair of diamond earrings she got from herhusband, the King. The ardinal, !ho !as also spurned b"the lovel" Queen Anne, learns about the diamonds. #o hetells the King to ask Anne to !ear the diamonds to a part".Queen Anne dissolves into tears, terri$ed that her husband!ill reali%e the earrings are gone.

onstance promises the Queen she&ll help her get theearrings back in time for the part". #he corrals D&Artagnan,!ho !orships the ground she !alks on, into traveling toEngland !ith her. 'e grabs his ne! friends (orthos, Athos,and Aramis and brings them along. Each of them is stoppedalong the !a", so D&Artagnan eventuall" sees the Duke alone.The Duke blocks all ships from leaving England )and declares!ar on France in the doing*, and produces the diamonds.D&Artagnan hurries back to (aris, and the Queen !ears theearrings to the part".

!as kidnapped. Kno!ing he needs help to get her back, he sets o+ !ith a man named(lanchet to $nd out !hat happened to Aramis, (orthos, and Athos. 'e $nds the $rst t!o!ounded at inns, so he leaves them horses and goes in search of Athos. 'e $nds Athos, !hotells him the stor" of a man !hose heart !as broken b" a !oman !ho turned out to be acriminal.

'o!ever,she cleverl" corrupts her /ailer, convinces him )a religious puritan fanatic* that Buckinghamdeserves to be put to death, and he obe"s her. #he then escapes to France, !here she isdetermined to complete her revenge against d&Artagnan. #he goes to the convent !here the3ueen has placed onstance Bonacieu4, d&Artagnan&s beloved, for protection, and there
