matoes, chillies and eggplant. In Rabi and Zaid

Rabi (winters followed by spring) season alone

Mahendra earned USD 289 (INR 13,000) by selling

his produce in the local market. With an enhanced

confidence, Mahendra sowed seeds of kharif

(summer season) crops- okra and other greens

in the month of May- June. He earned USD 178

(INR 8,000) from this second round of yield.

Access to irrigation water is a critical issue facing

most smallholder farmers across India. Even in

areas where groundwater is abundant such as

parts of eastern and northern India, smallholder

farmers do not have the means to access this

groundwater. IDEI is promoting low-cost bore-

wells in such areas with high water table. These

bore-wells are cheap enough and can be afforded

by the poorest farmer and be easily installed.

IDEIs water lifting technologies are driven by

human energy with a combination of lifting and

pumping device. Delivery arrangements allow

the water to be dropped into a channel or de-

livered under pressure into a pipe. All technolo-

gies provide rated water discharge (specified for

each technology) and are reliable requiring least

maintenance. There are no recurring costs. The

Rope & Washer Pump is a human powered hand operatedpump used to lift water open water source with appliedhuman power in between 40-100watt. The unique charac-teristic of rope pump is that rope together with the pistonsfunctions as an endless band transporting water.

& drinking purpose.

It increases the efciency of water use in irrigation in com-bination with drip line in the gravity fed drip system.
