[2ND SUNDAY OF LENT_2017_SOJOURNERS]

Lenten period invites us into deeper meditation and soul searching of the purpose and mission of life on earth. We are called to get into good relationship with God and

prepare ourselves for the final journey to our Homeland. As Abraham was asked to leave his homeland and country people for another land where God has promised to provide and protect him, the same way we are on earth as sojourners who rely on the

grace of God for sustenance, protection and prosperity. The sojourner/stranger, immigrant is among the three vulnerable people God takes special interest in their

welfare and protection. (ger-sojourner, almana- widow and anawin-poor) The Mosaic law prohibits the people of Israel from oppressing the sojourners in their midst (Ex.

22:21, Lev.19:33) rather they were mandated to provide for them and use a tenth of the tithe every three years to store food in the towns for the sustenance. (Deut. 26:12) The people of Israel were mandated to love the strangers in their midst. (Lev. 19:34) We are

all pilgrims and sojourners and will only rely on the grace and purpose of God as St. Paul would remind Timothy in the second reading. This world is transitory and

temporary and so we have to look towards the eternal abode where they would be peace and love. The Lord in the story of the transfiguration exposes the trio to the

beauty and reality of the REAL HOMELAND. (Beatific Vision) Peter could not contain his joy and wanted to build permanent tents to remain there eternally. We can only go

there if we have perfect union with God and Lenten observance offers us opportunity to make it. May His grace help us to make fruitful Lenten observance in order to enter the

beautiful bliss of the Resurrection we pray thee oh Lord.
