Payap History: Presbyterian Mission History in Chiang Mai

1865 Presbyterian mission workers Daniel McGilvary and Jonathon Wilson came to Chiang Mai

1867 Two converts were killed by the prince of Chiang Mai.

The missionaries went to Bangkok and asked for religious freedom. The king proclaimed freedom for Thai people to follow any religion they choose.

Mission contributions:

-education for girls-medical help for malaria, small pox, leprosy-safety for people accused of witchcraft

1913 Speech at Prince Royal’s College speaks of dream of education from kingdergarten through

university – first dream of Payap University

Payap History: Payap College

Initially hoped to name Payap Christian College, but the government would not allow use of the word Christian, so it was called Payap (means Northwest)

Konrad Kingshill sent to Thailand in 1947 to start a college. Thai government legalized private higher education in 1972.

Payap College was granted its university charter in 1984, becoming Payap University, Thailand’s first private university.

Mission Statement

Payap University, the first private university in Thailand, was established by the Foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand to bear witness to the steadfast love of God, the faithfulness of humanity, and concern and support for one another.

Payap University strives to adhere to its motto, “Truth and Service,” by seeking academic and moral excellence in order to create understanding of the living truth and an attitude of service to all.

They flow out of our Christian foundation and undergird our mission statement and our motto Truth and Service.
