Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
GROW AS A DISCIPLE: I remember taking my oldest son on a tour of a technical 
theater program at a state university.  He had been considering an IT field – he’s eve-
ryone’s go-to whenever a technical  issue arises.   The theater professor said, “Enroll 
in our program only if you can’t do anything else.”  The implica on was clear: Choose 
this field if you love it so much you can’t imagine pursuing a different career.  My son 
tried  a  more  prac cal  direc on,  but  ul mately  came  back  to  theater,  where  he 
thrived! 
I  thought  of  this  story  when  listening  to  Paul’s  Le er  to  the  Corinthians:  He 
preached the Gospel because he had to – excuse the double nega ve, but he could 
not “not” share the Good News with everyone he met!  Once he encountered Jesus, 
he willingly devoted his life to sharing the story of love and salva on to all those who 
he encountered – the weak and the powerful, rich and poor, saints and sinners.  Let 
us pray that God helps us recapture the wonder the crowds must have felt in Jesus’ 
presence – wonder that compels us to share the Good News, too. 
GO EVANGELIZE: Wherever you happen to live, imagine “the whole town gath-
ered at the door.”   Even  in the smallest of villages, that would be a big deal!   So  it 
was with Jesus, where crowds seemed to follow him wherever he went, wan ng to 
catch a glimpse of  this  carpenter’s  son who cured  the  sick and drove out demons.  
When the disciples found him off by himself, praying, and told him “everyone is look-
ing for you,” Jesus tells them they need to move on to nearby villages. 
I  sense  an  urgency  in Mark’s  account  of  Jesus’  movements,  showing  Jesus  as 
compelled to reach as many people as possible during his public ministry.  As I hear 
this, I think how easy it is for us Catholics to remain in our comfort zones – whether a 
favorite pew, the same core group of “parish friends,” or even s cking with one min-
istry or one Mass  me.  But, as Jesus shows us, preaching the Good News – witness-
ing to the power of God in our lives – means we cannot stand idly by.  We must share 
this news. 
WITNESS: What if we tried to emulate Jesus, albeit  in a small way, by reaching 
beyond our “circles” to greet someone new at our parish, volunteer for the first  me 
or in a different way, or – yes – sit in a different spot! In doing so, we can challenge 
ourselves to “stretch” a bit and welcome others into our world.

World Day of the Sick The World Day of the Sick is celebrated annually on February 11th, the feast day 
of Our Lady of Lourdes.  As the pandemic con nues to wreak havoc worldwide, let us 
try our best to a end Mass, pray the rosary, and offer sacrifices that day to pray for 
everyone’s good health and a quick recovery for all the sick. 
Chinese New Year The first day of the Lunar Year 4719, the Year of the Ox, will 
fall on Friday, February 12th.  Due to the pandemic, our Chinese 
parishioners  will  celebrate  the  New  Year  with  a  simple  Mass 
followed by the rite of Ancestor Venera on on Sunday, February 
14th.    Together,  let  us  join  our  Chinese  brothers  and  sisters  to 
thank God  for his protec on  in  this past year and  to pray  for a 
be er New Year. 
 
National Marriage Week In  the  United  States,  the  Na onal Marriage Week  is 
celebrated annually from February 7th to February 14th, and the 
World Marriage Day  is  celebrated  on  the  second  Sunday  of 
February.    These  days  provide  an  opportunity  to  promote, 
celebrate  and  strengthen  marriage.    Our  marriage  ministry, 
Nacimos Para Amarnos, will  celebrate  the World Marriage Day
with a special Mass at 6:00 PM on Sunday, February 14th.  All are

Holy Hour for Vocations Next  Sunday,  February  14th,  at  7:00  PM,  in  the  Upper 
Church, our Parish Voca on Commi ee will hold a Holy Hour for
Voca ons.  All are invited. 
At  the  end  of  the Holy Hour, we will  present  our Voca on
Chalice to a family to take home and pray daily for voca ons un l 
the next month.  If your family would like to receive the chalice, 
please sign up with Consepcion Torres. 
 
Ash Wednesday This  year,  the  pandemic  changed  everything,  including  the 
way  we  receive  ashes  on  Ash Wednesday.    According  to 
instruc ons from both our Diocese and the Va can: 
1.  Ashes  can  only  be  given  at  a  Mass  or  a  Communion 
Service 
2. Ashes cannot be taken home for someone else 
3. Ashes will only be dropped on the head, not the forehead 
So, we will not be giving out ashes all day, or in the rectory, 
as  we  did  in  the  past.    We  will  schedule  Masses  and  Services 
throughout  Ash Wednesday  to  make  sure  everyone  has  an 
opportunity to receive ashes this year.

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
CRECER COMO DISCÍPULO: Recuerdo llevar a mi hijo mayor a un recorrido por un programa de teatro tecnico en una universidad estatal. Haba estado con- siderando un campo de informatica: El es al que todos pueden acudir cuando surge un problema tecnico. El profesor de teatro dijo: “Inscrbete en nuestro pro- grama solo si no puedes hacer nada mas.” La implicacion era clara: elige este campo si te gusta tanto que no te imaginas seguir una carrera diferente. Mi hijo intento una direccion mas practica, pero inalmente regreso al teatro, ¡donde prospero!
Pense en esta historia cuando escuche la Carta de Pablo a los Corintios: El predico el Evangelio porque tena que hacerlo – disculpa la doble negativa, ¡pero no poda “no” compartir la Buena Nueva con todos los que conoca! Una vez que conocio a Jesus, dedico voluntariamente su vida a compartir la historia del amor y la salvacion con todos aquellos con quienes se encontro: los debiles y los pode- rosos, los ricos y los pobres, los santos y los pecadores. Oremos para que Dios nos ayude a recuperar la maravilla que las multitudes sintieron en la presencia de Jesus, maravilla que nos impulse a compartir tambien las Buenas Nuevas.
IR A EVANGELIZAR: Dondequiera que viva, imagnese “toda la ciudad reuni- da en la puerta.” Incluso en los pueblos mas pequenos, ¡eso sera un gran proble- ma! As sucedio con Jesus, donde las multitudes parecan seguirlo dondequiera que iba, queriendo vislumbrar al hijo del carpintero que curo a los enfermos y expulso demonios. Cuando los discpulos lo encontraron solo, orando, y le dije- ron “todos te estan buscando,” Jesus les dice que deben irse a los pueblos cerca- nos.
Se siente una urgencia en el relato de Marcos sobre los movimientos de Je- sus, que muestra a un Jesus obligado a llegar a muchas personas como lo sea po- sible durante su ministerio publico. Mientras escucho esto, pienso en lo facil que es para nosotros los catolicos permanecer en nuestras zonas de confort, ya sea un banco favorito, el mismo grupo de “amigos de la parroquia” o incluso mante- nerse en un solo ministerio o en un solo horario de misa. Pero, como Jesus nos muestra, predicar las Buenas Nuevas – testi icar el poder de Dios en nuestras vidas – signi ica que no po- demos quedarnos de brazos cruzados. Debemos com- partir esta noticia.
TESTIMONIAR: ¿Que pasara si intentaramos emular a Jesus, aunque sea de una manera pequena, yendo mas alla de nuestros “crculos” para saludar a alguien nuevo en nuestra parroquia, ser voluntario por primera vez o de una manera diferente, o – s – nos sentaramos en un lugar diferente? Al hacerlo, po- demos desa iarnos a nosotros mismos a “estirarnos” un poco y dar la bienvenida a otros a nuestro mundo.

Día Mundial del Enfermo El Día Mundial del Enfermo se celebra anualmente el 11 de febrero, da fes-
tivo de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. A medida que la pandemia continua causando estragos en todo el mundo, hagamos todo lo posible para ir a Misa, rezar el rosa- rio y ofrecer un sacri icio ese da para orar por la buena salud de todos y una ra- pida recuperacion de todos los enfermos.
Año Nuevo Chino El primer da del Ano Lunar 4719, el Año del
Buey, caera el viernes 12 de febrero. Debido a la pandemia, nuestros feligreses chinos celebraran el Año Nuevo con una Misa sencilla seguida del rito de Veneración de los Ancestros el domingo 14 de febrero. Juntos, unamonos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas chinos, para agradecer a Dios por su proteccion en este ultimo ano y orar por un Ano Nuevo mejor.
Semana Nacional del Matrimonio
En los Estados Unidos, la Semana Nacional del Matrimonio se celebra anualmente del 7 al 14 de febrero, y el Día Mundial del Matrimonio se celebra el segundo domingo de febrero. Estos das brindan la oportunidad de promover, celebrar y fortalecer el matrimonio. Nuestro ministerio matrimonial, Nacimos Para Amarnos, celebrara el Día Mundial del Matrimonio con una Misa especial a las 6:00 p.m. el domingo 14 de febrero. Todos estan invitados.
Hora Santa para las Vocaciones
Proximo domingo, 14 de febrero, a las 7:00 p.m., en la iglesia de arriba, nuestro Comité Parroquial de Vocaciones celebrara una Hora Santa para las Vocaciones. Todos estan invitados.
Al inal de la Hora Santa, presentaremos nuestro Cáliz Vocacional a una familia para llevar a casa y orar diariamente por las vocaciones hasta el mes siguiente. Si su familia desea recibir el caliz, por favor regstrese en Concepcion Torres.
Miércoles de Ceniza Este ano, la pandemia cambio todo, incluyendo
la forma en que recibimos las cenizas el Miércoles de Ceniza. De acuerdo con las instrucciones tanto de nuestra Diocesis como del Vaticano:
1. Las cenizas solo se pueden dar en una Misa o un Servicio de Comunion.
2. Las cenizas no se pueden llevar a casa para otra persona.
3. Las cenizas solo se dejaran caer en la cabeza, no en la frente.
Entonces, no estaremos dando cenizas todo el da, o en la rectora, como lo hicimos en el pasado. Programaremos Misas y Servicios durante el Miércoles de Ceniza para que todos tengan la oportunidad de recibir cenizas este ano.
