Academic Programs

The dierent programmes at IIT Bombay are designed to build the fundamentals and cater to the

industry needs. Exposure to real industry problems is given adequate importance. Students can also

parcipate in the current research underway through programmes like Undergraduate Research Award

(URA).

of the programme is 4-5 years.

Rigorous Internaonal Peer Review With a searchable database of the Ph.D. students’ research

proles, the process is extremely recruiter-friendly. To add to

this, the recruitment for Ph.D. students can happen through-

out the year, and the process is very exible to help the

IIT Bombay accords pivotal status to research and development in pursuit of excellence. The instute plays

a vital role in diverse facets of research and development addressing the needs of the naon and

catalogue of research projects funded by naonal and internaonal organizaons and industries.

Student Projects

Development and applicaon oriented projects, under the guidance of faculty are mandatory for students

of all Academic Programmes. Majority of these projects being industry sponsored, provide students with an

opportunity to understand and analyze real life problems pertaining to the respecve industry.

Publicaons

Students acvely publish their work in the form of papers in peer reviewed naonal and internaonal con-

ferences and refereed journals.

Patents

Students who have come up with innovave soluons to praccal problems are encouraged to le naonal

Research Assistantship

The three year research assistantship for postgraduate students involves working on ongoing research

projects, maintaining laboratories or system administraon.

IRCC

Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) coordinates sponsored research and industrial

consultancy projects at IIT Bombay. Through such projects, students and researchers at IIT Bombay solve

problems arising in industry and conduct basic and applied research.

The Internship Cell at IIT Bombay :

Students take up summer internships to gain rst-hand experience

of the professional world, aer second or third year of their

academic programme. The duraon varies between 8 to 10 weeks

starng from May and extending ll mid of July. The recruing

rms include Core Engineering Firms, Research Universies, Banks,Consulng and Analycs rms, FMCG majors and NGOs.

To familiarize the students with foreign

Life

Notwithstanding the ght academic schedule that students have, they manage to indulge in various

extra-curricular acvies. A host of acvies ranging from inter-hostel compeons and naonallevel

fesvals to managing facilies like messing and hostel infrastructure are enrely managed by

students. These acvies provide multude of plaorms for students to hone their technical and

managerial skills, which are imperave for one to excel in his/her workplace.

Students’ GymkhanaStudents’ Gymkhana plays the host to most of the acvies that are conducted round the year, be it cultural,

sports or college fesvals.

SportsIITB Sports has the infrastructure for various recreaonal, training and compeve acvies,

round the year, in various sports and games. Be it formal parcipaon in sports/games like

football, athlecs, chess, basketball and cricket, swimming, or such acvi es as walking, jogging,

cycling, mountaineering, gyming, one can always nd something to match one’s interests and

abilies.

Inter IIT Sports MeetThe Inter IIT Sports Meet, held annually in October/December. Every year one of the IITs host an inter IIT

Sports event in which the best athletes compete in various sports for the coveted Inter IIT Trophy.

Cultural Acvies

Performing Arts Fesval(PAF), inter-hostel compeons, professional performances and concerts

by renowned arsts, exhibions, talent shows, workshops to name are some of the acvies held

at IIT-Bombay. PAF is the annual inter hostel dramacs compeon in which students from 2-3

hostels combine as a group to develop and perform stage shows on a grand scale. The extravaganza

of cultural arts like dramacs, literature, music, ne arts, and debang that PAF is, it is an event that

everyone in the IIT community eagerly looks forward to!

ClubsTimely meengs throughout the year and students’ acve parcipaon are the most remarkable

characterisc of IIT-Bombay clubs. As a result, IIT-Bombay students outdo their peers at various

Inter-collegiate fesvals. Students are self-driven to leave a mark on big stages and it is thi s passion

of theirs which keeps the spirit of IIT-Bombay live and kicking!

The sheer variety of acvies that students are involved with is evident from the number of 

student-clubs - dramacs, lmmaking, dance, music (western and Indian), photography, ne arts,

hindi speaking, debang, literary arts, radio shows, astronomy and others.

There are also tech clubs like WnCC (coding), Robocs, Aeromodelling and the Maths & Physics club.

Mood IndigoCome December and Mood Indigo provides a pl aorm for youth talent across the country to converge and vie for

glory in a plethora of compeons. Professional performances and workshops by some of the world renowned

arsts and theater persons light up the environments.

The Entrepreneurship CellThe Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Bombay is a non-prot student organizaon with a vision to promote entrepreneur-

ship. E-Cell targets to help the development of India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by enabling interacon between

its major components; spanning students, entrepreneurs, mentors, angel investors, venture capital rms and

corporates.

Techfest

Techfest has over the years grown to become the biggest of its kind in A sia. Whether it is the latest and the best i n

R&D; lectures by some of the most eminent personalies of myriad elds in science, technology and management;

innovave and excing compeons or workshops on riveng topics, IIT Bombay’s Techfest is the desnaon.

SARCThe Student Alumni Relaons Cell, managed by the students of IIT-B, works towards enhancement of interacons

between students and alumni of IIT Bombay. SARC has launched many iniaves like the Alumni Student

Mentorship Program, Students Alumni Meet (SAM), Phonathon etc., which have acted as a common plaorm for

interacon between students and alumni.

Insight and Aawaaz

These are IIT Bombay’s monthly English and Hindi News Bullens meant for circulaon within the campus.

Video and audio interviews, panel debates and opinion polls on issues aecng the student community are someof the acvies carried out by the student team members of Insight and Aawaaz.

Research Scholars Forum

The Research Scholars’ Forum (RSF), established in 1998, is a voluntary organizaon aempng to address the

fundamental needs of the 1200 Research Scholars (PhDs) of the instute.

expectaons and student aspiraons. The team of student representaves consists of the Placement Managers

who coordinate the acvies of the other student members and ensure compliance with various Instute policies;

Company Coordinators who execute coordinaon with the recruing organisaons; and Department Placement

Coordinators who steer student preparedness and employability enhancement iniaves.

The Placement Oce is well-equipped with excellent infrastructure to support every stage of the

To support the placement process, the Placement Oce has an eecve online system in place. The procedure

for campus placement follows the following plan:

1The Placement Oce sends invitaons tocompanies/ organisaons along withrelevant informaon.

2The accounts are created for organisaonsinterested in recruing on the website:

3A Company/Organisaon lls a JobAnnouncement Form (JAF)containing details of the job and theoer using their online account.

they can send a request along withthe preferred dates.

Interested and eligible (as per the criteriaspecied by the organisaons) students show theirwillingness to appear for the recruitment process of a company by signing its JAF online. The veried re-sumes of all such students become available to theorganisaon for downloading or viewing throughtheir placement account.

7Organisaons can shortlist students. The organisaons are al so requestedto maintain a waitlist of students who can be interviewed in the event of 

non-availability of some of the shortlisted students.

8Placement Oce allots dates for recruitment procedure by considering fac-tors like student preferences, job prole, etc. Organisaons visit the campuson the alloed date(s) and conduct tests and/or interviews according totheir recruitment process.

9furnish the nal list of selected students in asealed envelope at the end of the assignedinterview slot. The organisaons are alsorequested to maintain a waitlist of studentsin case of non-availability of some of theselected students.

10The Placement Oce also coordinates the signing of oer leers by stu-dents who have been selected to ensure that they reach the company/

organisaon as early as possible.

The placement season begins in the month of July and goes up ll June of following year. However, the Place-ment Oce conducts several acvies throughout the year for the benet of students. Some of the acvi esare as follows:

Resume vericaonAll claims made by students in resumes submied for campus placement are duly veried by the PlacementOce. The vericaon standards are uniform throughout t he Instute.

Employability enhancement programmesIIT Bombay aims to give its students the grooming that they require not just for facing placement interviewsbut also to excel in their corporate careers in the future.
