In this edition of our newsmagazine - Imaging and Vision, we present exciting product launches from several of our suppliers, we put the spotlight on imaging computers and tell you more about the new USB3 Vision standard.

Both Neousys and Matrox have released several new models of industrial computers adapted for USB 3.0 and GigE cameras. Thanks to wide temperature ranges, configuration possibilities and fanless constructions, they are ideal for various vision applications. Whatever your interface need is, we have a solution.

Automation Technology has launched a new series of compact cameras for 3D applications. These new cameras are based on the same algorithms and sensors as the previous models but they come in a compact, ruggedized enclosure and with an excellent price/performance ratio.

Our camera supplier Basler, broaden their camera portfolio to emphasize their position as market leader in the GigE camera segment. With over 30 models available and a starting price from € 199, the cameras are suitable for both entry-level and high-end applications.

In addition, Basler has released their first cameras with USB 3.0 interface with resolutions from VGA to 5MP. For high-resolution applications, 10 and 14 MP cameras are around the corner.

We have summarized the facts about the USB3 Vision standard but a complete article and reasons for converting from other interfaces can be read in its entirety as a white paper on our website.Enjoy your reading!

The FLIR compact A-Series thermal

camera is compact enough to fit in the tightest spaces on your production line and is the perfect solution for those applications that require high perfor-mance at a low cost. Designed specifi-cally for machine vision, FLIR Compact A-Series provides the versatility and plug-and-play compatibility of GigE Vision and GenICam protocols.

Extremely affordable - The FLIR compact A-Series is an extremely affordable unit. From now on price is no longer an issue for deploying thermal imaging cameras to monitor continuous processes.

Compact - Extremely compact, measuring only 40 mm x 43 mm x 106 mm the FLIR compact A-Series can easily be integrated in every production line.

GigE Vision standard compatibility GigE Vision is a new camera interface standard developed using the Gigabit Ethernet communication protocol. GigE Vision is the first standard to allow for fast image transfer using low cost standard cables even over long distances. With GigE Vision, hardware and software from different vendors can interoperate seamlessly over GigE connections.

GenICam protocol support - The goal of GenICam is to provide a generic program-ming interface for all types of cameras. Regardless of interface technology (GigE Vision, Camera Link, 1394 DCAM, etc.) or features implemented, the Application Programming Interface (API) will always be the same. The GenICam protocol also allows use of third party software and makes the FLIR compact A-Series plug-and play.

Industrial camera & lighting enclosures for machine vision systems

Allison Park Group, Inc. manufactures camera & lighting enclosures

for harsh industrial environments. Their range consists of housings for food (FDA) applications, washdown and explosive

environments and support cameras from most manufacturers.

Cameras for industrial use, such as in machine vision applications, often have a low IP rating and need to be protected in

the environments that they are installed. Sometimes you might just want to prevent physical damage, idle hands or just make sure that the camera is working stable over time, even in hash environments.

SONY

In response to growing demand

for high-quality, high-resolution images, Sony have developed new color models to their wide range of block cameras.

The FCB-EV7500 employs 1/2.8-type Exmor CMOS image sensor with Full HD (1080/60p) performance, and

achieves excellent zooming performance with a 30x optical zoom lens. The FCB-EV7100 also delivers Full HD (1080/60p) performance with a 10x optical zoom lens with very light compact design.

These cameras inherit a multitude of features from Sony’s world-renowned FCB Series including wide dynamic range, Auto

ICR, and Spherical Privacy Zone Masking. These useful features make these cameras suitable for a variety of applications.

USB 3.0, also known as

SuperSpeed USB, is the next generation of the popular ‘Plug & Play’ Universal Serial Bus specification, building on the strengths of USB 2.0 while also correcting its weaknesses. When using the bulk transfer method, the effective available bandwidth provided by USB 3.0 totals approx. 400 Mbytes/s. This is roughly ten times the bandwidth of USB 2.0 and five times greater than the bandwidth of IEEE 1394b(FireWire-b). USB 3.0 also offers the potential for delivering a greater volume of power to the connected devices. At 900 mA (compared with 500 mA for USB 2.0), this is a major benefit since it allows for the operation of numerous devices with no active power supply. At the same time the energy management has also

been improved. USB 3.0 allows devices to be moved from various standby modes into a suspend mode, which saves a significant amount of energy

USB3 Vision Standard Although USB 2.0 has for years been accepted in the end customer segment, it failed to gain real traction on the industrial market and one reason was the lack of a standard to define the interfaces and interoperability. This resulted in all major manufacturers of cameras, cables and soft-ware solutions came together to establish the USB3 Vision Standard for the intro-duction of the USB 3.0 interface onto the industrial and image processing market.

One benefit of the standard is that the soft-ware and hardware can be swapped out interchangeably, and it is completely reliable

in terms of function and stability during image transmission. The USB3 Vision Standard ensures users stability and flexibility in the setup of a vision system.

Basler is convinced that USB 3.0 will gradually establish next to Gigabit Ether-net as an important interface technology for applications in the fields of industry, medicine and traffic. This interface com-bines high bandwidth, plug and play and real-time capabilities. With these benefits USB 3.0 has a good chance to take hold next to GigE as a user-friendly interface for mainstream applications. Since GigE continues to offer technical advantages with regard to cable length (100 m) and multi-camera capability as well as a wide acceptance in the market, they will co-exist on the camera market.

BASLER

USB 3.0 interface and USB3 vision standard

The USB3 Vision Standard offers the following technical benefits:

• Low CPU load: The use of zero copy (Direct Memory Access — DMA —is available) keeps the necessary CPU load for image retrieval very low

• Variable image size: Allows for the sending of images in variable sizes by providing the host with information about the image in advance

• Low latency and jitter times: The bi-directional communication possibilities allows the host to initiate actions at any time without any expectation of delays

• System stability: The uniform definitions of the requirements for the cable and other accessories prevent potential malfunctions during data transmission.

The new successful ace series of USB3 Vision-certified cameras feature various high-quality and field-proven CCD and CMOS sensors. Models range from VGA to 5 MP resolution and 120 frames per second (coming end of this year: 10 and 14 MP). All ace models have a 29 mm x 29 mm footprint and same bottom mounting options for easy FireWire, USB 2.0, or analog camera replacement.

It is completely USB3 Vision compliant, and provides – thanks to its 56 MB frame buffer – interference-free data transfer.

It offers a wide range of firmware features on the proprietary FPGA (field programmable gate array), including image preprocessing through debayering, color improvement, and automatic gain, as an additional bonus. Also on the list of benefits are

useful features such as triggerable image sequences with different exposure times (these can be used for HDR images).

The ace’s most distinctive advantage over its competitors is its extremely attractive performance-price-ratio.
