CARTA ABiERTA

Saludos afectuosos,

Dear Readers,

The editorial team of this new magazine has kindly given me the opportunity to send you this opening letter at the start of a new initiaitve.

Firstly, I must congratulate IML La Zubia for this magnificent effort and for having taken the initiative in offering this project to the people of La Zubia. Once again, IML shows that it is at the head of the language requirements of its students and, in general, of all those who may be interested in learning this language which is so essential in the world today.

Learning a language can never be restricted to neither a classroom, nor a magnificent English teacher nor to the latest electronic teaching equipment. The language must be absorbed at each and every chance that daily life offers us: films in English, TV programmes, songs, books, comics, computer games and … magazines. My congratulations on the start of this ambitious project which I wish good fortune; I am sure that it will be very well received by everyone who reads it.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Baum Director IML

Estimados lectores:

Current energy situation is influenced by the confluence of continuous

increases of fossil fuel prices, together with government ´s problems to achieve the right energy –mix.

The search for alternative energies free of fossil fuels, cheaper and safer to our environment is becoming the target of some of the politicians, and most of the population.

Domestic heating is the greatest energy demand; Biomass –either wood pellets, or olive stones- is coming from controlled growing forest, wood waste from manufactures, and residual product from olive oil manufacturing and has become an demanding alternative energy due to : is economic, sustainable, and safe to environment.

As technology improves, models are becoming more sophisticated and efficiency is improving enabling heat output to be better controlled and varied when needed; boilers are no longer something from the pass, but rather on they are leading boilers ready to be the solution of personal heating needs.

UNAS PALABRASPara comenzar, Jonathan Baum,

Welcome to my home state of wild, wonderful West Virginia.

Here you will find a land of green, rolling mountains, rivers, lakes, and charming small towns. Of the fifty American states, West Virginia is one of the most inconspicuous.

A SOUTHERN STATEYou’ve heard of New York,

California, Washington D.C., and probably Virginia. But West Virginia is not Virginia. The issue of slavery divided the original state of Virginia during the American Civil War. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln created the

Union state of West Virginia by separating it from the confederate state of Virginia. Although West Virginia sided with the north in the war, geographically, it is considered a southern state because most of its territory is south of the Mason-Dixon line- the invisible line that horizontally divides the United States. The state of West Virginia is neighbored by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia.

FOLK HERITAGEWest Virginia is the only state that

is entirely covered by the ancient Appalachian Mountains, and it does not have a coast. Once populated by Native American tribes, it was then settled mostly by immigrants

from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. These settlers brought with them their traditional music, folk ballads that, with influences from African Americans, evolved into Appalachian folk music. Fiddles, banjos, and guitars are the principal instruments. West Virginia is home to a large number of festivals that celebrate traditional music and culture. “Old-time” music is still popular and you can still find weekly square dances.

OUTDOORSWest Virginians are known for being

friendly and hospitable. The main industries in West Virginia are logging and coal mining. West Virginia’s residents are 75% Christian (60% Protestant, 8% Catholic), according to the 2001 Census Bureau. West Virginia does not have any larges cities or skyscrapers. The largest city is its capital, Charleston, with only 53,400 citizens. However, the state is known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and hunting.

In summary, if you’re looking for a big city adventure, West Virginia is not for you. But if you are interested in traditional local culture and music, the outdoors, and meeting friendly locals, it’s the place to go! . breathtaking: impresionante

Trick or treat! It’s Halloween!

Children celebrate Halloween around the world on the night of October 31st. They go out in macabre costumes of ghosts, witches or skeletons to knock

on their neighbours’ doors and shout “trick or treat”. The neighbours must give them sweets.

Halloween is a big business in the United States where people spend around seven billion dollars each year on Halloween products. Theme parks like Disneyland hold week-long festivals and many cities have parades. New York’s Village Halloween Parade attracts two million people who celebrate in the streets, dressed in stunning costumes. The tradition s strongest in the United States, bus interest is growing in Europe.

Actually, Halloween originated in Europe as a Celtic New Year celebration. For the Irish, in the Celtic calendar, October 31st was Samhain, a pagan festival. The Celts believed that the dead returned to posses the living during that night, and so they opened their doors and provided food for the wandering good souls, and wore costumed to scare off the evil ones.

Terror in the forest

A group of friends decided to go camping in the forest during a starry night. They caught their food, torches, and sleeping bags and started their trip.

When they arrived to the forest they made a bonfire and they sat around it.

It was the Halloween night and all of them started to tell terror stories.

Suddenly, they saw something strange. They saw some white shadows moving around them, the shadows hid over the trees when the boys looked at them. There were strange noises, shouts, howls… They were very scared, so all of them decided to go to discover what it was. No one wanted to go, so they decided to go from the older to the younger. The oldest got into the forest, he looked for a long time but he didn’t find anything. When he was getting ready to leave, someone took him and dragged him along the floor, diving into the forest. He tried to run, but it was too late, the curse of the ghost had reached him. In fact, he believed he was going to die, but someone started to laugh. He turned round himself and he discovered that all of his friends were there! Everything was a joke!

“The Girl of the Wrist” A Scary LegendA day of 1910 in Pradena a village in the mountain range the farmer’s

daughter was walking to school on a frozen track. In the track lots of animals were passing by. That day of winter, when the girl was walking on the track a pack of wolves appeared. The girl tried to escape from the pack but when she was arriving to school a wolf of the pack caught her and the pack ate the girl. When the finished eating the girl, the only part that remained was the girl’s wrist.

Currently in this track you can see her tomb and in this tomb there is her wrist. People from Pradena say: In Winter, when you walk on the track where the girl died you can still hear her screams.

The Fairies WorldTwo fairies are walking in the country. Their names are Celeste and Violeta.

They are great friends. They play together every day. The other fairies are always at home, cooking, cleaning, etc. Celeste and Violeta collect flowers and fruits in the forest. This forest is very nice. In the forest there are animals, for example: birds, rabbits, frogs and foxes. The fairies are very happy in the forest because they have everything they need. They are free in the forest.

Murder in the ConcertAs the concert finished, I heard someone call my name. —John, John! Quickly, we have something important to do, you don’t forget

it, right?—It was my friend Mark. — We have to catch the murderer before he kills somebody else. —I know, I know, but I’m so tired. I don’t feel like doing it now.—Stop the foolishness and let’s go!My friend looked crazy, but I followed him. Half an hour later, finally, we

saw the murderer. —His face….I think that I know him….oh! —Of course I knew who he was. He

was Paul, Mary’s boyfriend! How could he do something like that?—Now that I think, Mary told me yesterday that Paul was very strange

lately. I think she is right, he doesn’t look the same. Mark and I followed him the whole night until finally he went into an old

factory. —A strange place to meet with his colleagues —said Mark. We waited there and we could see how Paul gave money to a man, and the

man gave him something… it seemed…drugs! That explained everything.—A very sad end for someone like him, but we haven’t got any other option

than to arrest him —Those were my words to Mark just before catching Paul, and taking him to the police.

A trip to MarsOnce upon a time there were children that they wanted to go to Mars. But

they couldn’t go because they were so young, they were ten years old. One day there was a trip to Mars to investigate if there was “life” on Mars. Then, they decided to go with them. It wasn’t easy, they lied to the police and they went in.

Their dream would come true! They looked for clothes for the trip and they waited to take off. The engine

turned on and it wasn’t reverse when it took off. They saw a pretty view of the Earth but at that moment a meteorite hit the spaceship and the captain came back to Earth.

They were afraid but it was a fantastic adventure!

The Story of IMLA very, very long time ago a Spanish man, 4,000 years before Christ, tried to

communicate with one English man on a trip to the U.K. but he did not manage. The man was sad because in his city he was the cleverest. In the U.K., he found that he was not. Years passed and nine years later he had one son and his name was Mark. The day of his 40th birthday Mark’s dad died but before, Mark made him a promise to communicate with one English man. Mark tried very hard to learn English. Years passed and many years later he learned English. Mark reached his city and decided to teach in the city, and from there the I.M.L. began.

My time slowly is passing away, trapped in this emptinessthese tears do no help me anyway.

The moon is gone, her pale luster has faded. My memories have died.Is this my fate?

I’m playing wings with Paula, Paula is my friend”

Marcos de 4 años ha estado escribiendo palabras y me dice “I’ve finished now, can I go to lunch?”. Laura se marcha diciendo “See you tomorrow”. La profesora pregunta: “Paula would you like mandarine?” Paula contesta: “No, thank you. I want an apple please”.

Teacher: Today, we’re going to talk about the tenses. Now, if I say “I am beautiful,” which tense is it? Student: Obviously it is the past tense.

A: Meet my new born brother.B: Oh, he is so handsome! What’s his name?A: I don’t know. I can’t understand a word he says.

— HEELP! HEEEELP!Le contesta el español: — ¡¡GEL NO LLEVO, PERO SI QUIERES TENGO CHAMPÚ!!!

What did the traffic lights say to the car

Don’t look now. I’m changing!

When I was young I didn’t like going to weddings. My grandmother would tell me, “You’re next”

However, she stopped doing that after I started saying the same thing to her at funerals.
