DEBORAH ANCONA | 4-CAP+ MODEL

Decades of research by MIT Sloan Professor Deborah Ancona and her MIT colleagues have uncovered the four key capabilities of effective leaders—sensemaking, visioning, relating, and inventing. However, “no matter how exceptional, it is truly rare to see a leader exhibit more than two or three of these capabilities,” says Ancona. “Effective leaders know what their strong suit is and do not fall for the myth of the omniscient leader.”

Known previously as the “4-CAP model,” this framework has recently been updated to add “building credibility” to its center. Renamed “4-CAP+” accordingly, this revised model demonstrates the importance of gaining respect from others by keeping commitments, creating trust with subordinates, and operating with a strong sense of purpose. The 4-CAP+ model identifies those leadership capabilities needed to create a nimble organization for an exponentially changing world. Ancona teaches in Transforming Your Leadership Strategy (page 23), Neuroscience for Leadership (page 23), and Founder to Family (page 21).

COURSES POWERED BY FACULTY RESEARCH

NELSON REPENNING | DYNAMIC WORK DESIGN

“Poor work design and entrenched organizational behaviors can lead to work overload,” says MIT Sloan Professor Nelson Repenning. “Organizations that produce knowledge-based work can learn a lot from manufacturing, where managers have adopted a ‘pull’ system for controlling the number and the rhythm of tasks in a work process.” Repenning developed and teaches the practice of Dynamic Work Design, an effective method of organizing intellectual work that draws from lean and agile approaches and promotes visual management.

“Creating systems that allow people to see their nonphysical work more clearly—both when it’s moving and when it’s stuck—may represent the next frontier of improved organizational performance.”

Repenning teaches in Visual Management for Competitive Advantage (Page 33); Business Dynamics (page 19); Business Process Design for Strategic Management (self-paced online) (page 31); and the Advanced Management Program (page 17).

GEORGE WESTERMAN | DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

“Technology changes quickly, but organizations change much more slowly,” says George Westerman, Senior Lecturer with MIT Sloan. George is one of the pioneering researchers on the leadership challenges posed by digital transformation, including his 2014 book Leading Digital that helped to shape the global conversation on the topic.

According to Westerman, digital masters excel not only at digital activity but also at leadership. “Organizations must convert digital transformation from a project into a capability.” This includes creating a compelling vision of the digitally powered future, fostering conversations so that people can understand the vision and what it means for them, and creating governance mechanisms that foster sharing and coordination without getting in the way of experiments. “Vision sets the direction, engagement is the gas pedal, and governance is the steering wheel.” Iterating through these elements can change the culture of the organization. “When that happens, digital transformation never stops. Instead, it becomes an ongoing process in which employees and their leaders continually identify new ways to change the company for the better.”

Westerman teaches in Essential IT for Non-IT Executives (page 31), Internet of Things (self-paced online) (page 21), and Founder to Family (page 21).

FACULTY CORNER

ZEYNEP TON | GOOD JOBS STRATEGY

“Many retailers have been operating in mediocrity for decades,” says Zeynep Ton, Founder of the Good Jobs Institute and Professor of the Practice, Operations Management, at MIT Sloan. Her research explores how organizations can design and manage their operations in a way that satisfies employees, customers, and investors simultaneously. “A focus on minimizing retail labor costs has led to bad jobs, high employee turnover, and unreliable attendance,” she says. “Top management doesn’t realize how much it is losing every day and how seriously the company’s competitiveness is being undermined.”

Breaking out of mediocrity often entails increasing wages and benefits, improving work schedules, building systems to develop and promote employees, and improving the work employees do. “Such job improvement ensures that employees are productive and can contribute to higher sales and lower costs. We call this combination of investment in people with operational choices that allow for a motivated and capable workforce the Good Jobs Strategy.”

Ton teaches in Achieving Operational Excellence Through People (page 31) and Strategies for Sustainable Business (page 29).

Carmen Cecilia Cabrera Polo is the founder and CEO of Skole, the leading school uniform company in Ecuador. She is also the sales manager for a family-run textiles company, CC Jr. Sport Confecciones Cabrera. Carmen’s vision has been essential to

stabilizing these businesses in the context of fluctuating politics and policies in her country. Now she is transforming her companies with takeaways from MIT.

“I immediately fell in love with the structure, how practical the learnings are, and how you can apply them to every stage of business and life. It was an amazing experience.” Carmen

was hooked after her first course and went on to complete ten more programs over the next twelve months, earning her Advanced Certificate for Executives (ACE).

Throughout her MIT experience, Carmen has been most impressed with how approachable the faculty members are. “Here, in Ecuador, professors are unreachable. I have felt that

way in other places, too. But at MIT, they are very accessible, and they care about you.”

“The programs at MIT have been invaluable. The information and skills I have gained are momentous. They have shifted my mindset for

the better in both my personal and professional endeavors.”

THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE FOR EXECUTIVES

The ACE is a special Executive Certificate for participants who attend 25 program days and complete at least two programs from each certificate track within a four-year period. At least 10 of these program days must be attended in person rather than online. The ACE is not a single program with a single group of participants. Rather, you design your certificate plan by choosing the courses and schedule that work best for you.

In addition to the many perks of being an Executive Certificate holder, such as a 20% discount on future programs and invitations to select MIT Sloan events, ACE holders also receive:

■ MIT Sloan affiliate alumni status

■ An MIT Sloan email-forwarding-for-life address

■ A profile in the MIT Sloan alumni directory

■ A subscription to the MIT Sloan alumni newsletter

Because our portfolio includes programs that are scheduled back-to-back, some participants choose to earn their ACE in one month-long visit. This experience allows them to step away from the office and take an immersive, deep dive into the subjects they care about most.

Other executives pursuing their ACE decide to spread their course requirements out over time, giving them an opportunity to implement new learnings before returning to campus. They may also choose to enroll in one or more online programs that enable them to participate from anywhere in the world.

SAMPLE ACE PLAN Each course listed below counts as two program days unless otherwise noted:

Sometimes, executives come to MIT for a short course or even to earn a certificate and decide that they want more—more in-depth, hands-on learning experiences, more time with faculty and peers, more time in the dynamic ecosystem of MIT—and further recognition of their commitment to continuous education. These professionals often decide to earn their “ACE”: The Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology.

Mahua Mukherjee is the Co-Founder of The Star in Me, a professional platform for women and organizations focused on building business effectiveness with

diversity. Mahua is also a 2018 alumna of the MIT Sloan Advanced Management Program (AMP).

When Mahua enrolled in AMP, she was a director in consulting at Cognizant, a global IT services firm. However, transition and entrepreneurship were firmly on her mind.

“While I was at MIT, I leveraged this extraordinary network and sought validation of my start-up idea and advice on how to make it more concrete. The experience was

instrumental to the first phase of my venture.”

In March of 2019, Mahua launched The Star in Me, a platform for women to connect, learn, and grow, as well as a talent pipeline solution for organizations.

“The Advanced Management Program at MIT Sloan was my way to benefit from the broad perspectives of a cohort of global, senior

executives and a concise curriculum in a condensed amount of time. I couldn’t think of a better program for me

than that.”

Alejandra is based at the Agile Solution’s main development center in Honduras, where she is responsible for multiple projects and teams. She recently relocated to

Canada to help grow an office in Montreal, including defining strategies and priorities and aligning these priorities with the company operations.

Alejandra decided to enroll in courses at MIT Sloan Executive Education to learn the state of the art in specific topics that were critical to her present challenges. She completed four courses, including Visual Management for Competitive Advantage (formerly Implementing Improvement Strategies) and Neuroscience for Leadership. She earned her MIT Sloan Executive Certificate in

Management and Leadership in 2019.

“There are many frameworks that proved useful … Every time I’m struggling with something I can rely on these approaches.”

She can also reach out to the network she has established through her time at MIT. “The people attending these courses are as enriching as the program

Like many companies, National Grid is trying to invest in their future by bringing new ideas, new thinking, and new products to meet their

customers’ needs, says Fouad Dagher, Director of Customer Innovation for the energy company. “I came to MIT thinking the programs might help us get more

squarely on that path, and it did. I also felt that being associated with MIT, where innovation is happening every day, would be beneficial, as it has proven to be.”

Fouad took several innovation-themed courses as well as the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP), earning his MIT Sloan Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation. He says EDP sealed his fate. “[EDP] was a phenomenal class with

so much diversity of thinking and backgrounds represented. That’s when I decided to take more classes and go for my Advanced Certificate for Executives.”

Fouad said the ACE is for his career but also for his own edification and satisfaction. “These programs enhance my capabilities … and there is also the perk of being associated with the MIT—a very powerful

thing. But most important is the usefulness of the content, and that’s why I will continue to take programs.”

Daryoush Larizadeh is the President of Leviton Manufacturing Company, one of the largest privately held global providers of electrical wiring devices, data center connectivity solutions, and lighting energy management systems. In 2016, Dayroush (MIT

Sloan MBA ’93), enrolled Leviton in an Enterprise Account so that his leadership team could pursue professional development and bring MIT frameworks back to the company.

“Initially I attended several programs with my leadership team and found that very productive. As President, this was a chance for us all to learn, together.” Shortly thereafter,

Daryoush began to send leaders informally to attend courses.

“I wanted to find a way to bring more MIT learning and frameworks to Leviton, and the school suggested an Enterprise Account. Now our leaders can enroll in as many

programs they feel support their learning and their work. All I ask is that they present their learnings to the management team when they return.”

Leviton leaders have taken courses focused on a wide variety of topics, from negotiation to innovation to product development. “Leaders send an email

out to the group to recommend programs they’ve enjoyed. Everyone has been very positive about their MIT experience. The faculty

are outstanding, and their material is very prepared, high caliber, and unique to MIT. Nothing is rehashed.”

DESIGN YOUR EXPERIENCEMIT Sloan approaches each of our custom engagements as a lasting, mutually productive relationship, not an isolated educational transaction. We look for companies that are interested in making fundamental, strategic changes in the way they do business.

As a first step, your top executives will meet with a team of MIT Sloan’s senior faculty to share your own imperatives, culture, and purpose. We will partner with your stakeholders to tailor a program that addresses the key challenges you’ve defined. Programs may include multiple residential sessions, virtual sessions, and action-learning projects taking place over the course of a few months or years.

Our experience has shown that a cadre of approximately 30 participants provides optimal discussion and meaningful interactions among faculty and participants. Programs frequently draw participants from around the world who connect—often for the first time—in the classroom and then work virtually on team projects that translate newly acquired frameworks into action strategies for your company.

On the eastern edge of the MIT campus, you’ll find the intersection of Main Street and Broadway, an area known as Kendall Square. This point is more than just a location on a map, a business district, or a subway stop. It is the epicenter of an innovation ecosystem.

With its unparalleled concentration of tech ventures, life sciences companies, and startups, this hub of invention and ideas has been proclaimed to be “the most innovative square mile on the planet.”

Entrepreneurs, researchers, inventors, venture capitalists, and students thrive in this innovation ecosystem rife with incubator opportunities and fueled by its rich pioneering past. Behind any wall or within any doorway, some of the world’s top minds are designing AI robots, mapping neural pathways, and working to cure cancer. Many of today’s top

global tech companies have set up shop here, from Google to Amazon to Microsoft.

And, it didn’t happen by accident.

MIT has been instrumental in shaping the area since moving its main campus to Cambridge in 1916. Collaborating with various stakeholders, the Institute continues to transform the area through new housing, retail, and open space, while maintaining its promise to carve out “innovation space”—small, affordable offices for startup companies.

Our Executive Education programs are infused with this spirit. While you are here, make the most of this innovative square mile: network at the venture café, which opens its doors to the entire community every Thursday night; explore the MIT Museum; and meander the campus using the MIT Mobile app (mobi.mit.edu).
