At the end of 1957, the German Shipyard Mützelfeldtwerft Gmbh of Cuxhaven in the North Sea, launched and finished fitting out a new powerful “Motor Schlepper” (Tugboat) registered as “Neubau 152”, which a few month later came to be bought and consigned to the “Società di Navigazione, Rimorchi e Salvataggi – Tripcovich & C.” of Trieste (Italy).
In the first months of the next year, Tripcovich arranged to have its own crew transferred to the shipyard in Germany, in order to make the long voyage from the North Sea to the Adriatic Sea. Aboard, among the ship’s papers, there still remain receipts for the expenses of that trip.
In May 1958, the new tugboat baptised “Impetus”, strengthened by full 750 horsepower delivered by a six cylinder mastodon of a motor “Deutz” (type S8V6M545), came to be inscribed in the Registry of the “Direzione Marittima di Trieste”, for uninterrupted service in that port until August 1984, when she was ceded to the “Società Panfido & C.” of Venice.
There then began for Impetus a new, long period of intense work at Chioggia. And then, in the tranquil fishing poet at the extreme south of the Lagoon of Venice, she passed another eighteen years of honourable service as a rescue tugboat, before being
st“put out to pasture” on the 31 of March 2002, having reached the age limit and above all in consideration of her limited tugging power (barely eight tons), having become by then insufficient for the towing of giants which today plough the sea.
Thus, from the next May, having again changed owners, this aged gentlemanly lady of the sea was put through an intense rejuvenating cure comprised of lakes of detergent, and tons of paint, which have brought her (whit a few little embellishments of interiors decoration) to the old, original splendour of her youth.
The hull and motor apparatus, newly submitted to rigorous examination and verification on the part of the Ships Register, have passed all the tests brilliantly, showing a perfect state of conservation, even far above the rosiest predictions, which is all to the honour of the Cuxhaven shipyard which constructed her with an extremely Avant-garde technology for those times (certainly derived from their experience with the famous “U-Boats”).
However, il is not only to the honour of the Cuxhaven builders, but also to the merit of the sailors aboard her, who for over a good 44 years cared for the ship by careful, daily maintenance.
