The country has a rich cultural heritage with strong connections to the sea. The Irish Marine Summer School is a new and innovative offering from the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) which provides quality multidisciplinary training courses for students of marine-related sciences. The Summer School is unique in providing access to training on state of the art research vessels. The 2012 International Marine Summer School (IMSS) is based in the historic and cultural maritime cities of Galway and Cork, located in west and southwest Ireland. The IMSS courses are accredited by two premier marine research Universities in Ireland, National University of Ireland Galway and University College Cork. While it is possible to attend one course it is highly recommended that students enrol in both to achieve the full benefit of training in the diverse environments of the west and south of Ireland and to avail of the wide range of research and training opportunities along the Irish coastline. By attending both courses over a four week period, participants will have the opportunity to interact closely with expert marine scientists, professionals and naval personnel and will gain first hand experience of research at sea and the analysis and interpretation of marine data.
