What’s going on? 解 說When the bottle is placed in air, light from the soft drink refracts when it travels from the walls of the glass bottle to the air. Light from the coke appears to come from the outer edge of the glass bottle and it appears that the glass bottle is much thinner than it really is.When the bottle is placed in the liquid, light from the soft drink does not refract and passes straight through the boundary between the glass and the liquid. Hence, the view in this case shows a better approximation of the amount of soft drink in the bottle.

當玻璃瓶置於空氣中時,從汽水而來的光在通過玻璃瓶壁進入空氣時會發生折射,從汽水而來的光線就好像從玻璃瓶的外側而來,令我們產生錯覺,誤以為瓶壁比實際上的薄 (見圖)。當玻璃瓶浸沒在液體中時,從汽水而來的光直線通過玻璃瓶壁進入液體,而不會發生折射。在這個情況下,所顯示的就較接近汽水真實的分量了。

What’s going on? 解 說The olive oil used in this experiment has a refractive index very near to that of the glass. Initially, we can see the small beaker because light undergoes reflection and refraction when it travels from air to glass and from glass to air. When the small beaker is fully immersed in the oil, there is little refraction when light passes oil-glass boundaries. As a result, the small beaker seems to disappear in the oil.

實驗中所使用的油跟玻璃的折射率非常相近。當兩個燒杯內並未注入油時,我們可清楚看見小燒杯,是因為光從空氣進入玻璃,或從玻璃進入空氣時,會發生折射和反射。當小燒杯完全浸沒在油中時,光從油進入玻璃,或從玻璃進入油時便幾乎不會發生折射。結果,小燒杯便好像消失在油中。

What’s going on? 解 說The images formed by the acrylic rod mounted on a holder should be inverted regardless of the colours of the words. Since the words ‘DIOXIDE’ and ‘富貴’ are symmetrical about the axis of the rod (shown as the dashed lines in the figure), their images are apparently not inverted.

紙條上的文字通過透明膠棒所形成的像都是倒置的,不會受文字的顏色影響。「DIOXIDE」和「富貴」兩字看似沒有倒置,因為它們對稱於圓柱的中軸 (圖中的虛線)。

The sphere is just like a convex lens and forms an inverted image. Note that the image is not only laterally inverted, unlike the one formed by a cylinder.
