PRESIDENT’S REPORT BY John Erskine

As our new members have probably observed, Germany has MANY celebrations during the year, each with its own customs. Some are celebrated differently by region in Germany, but all are enjoyed with gusto! On February first, Teutonia kicks off the pre-liminary event leading to Fasching or Karneval. You can read about the traditional celebration later in this issue. It is one of the biggest Celebrations. We have three events - you should try to attend at least one – or all three of them!

We have some interesting and delicious dinners coming up. First is the Singers’ Spaghetti Dinner, a fundraiser for them. Then there is

Schnitzel night with several styles of this German favorite. Next is our Jägerabend (Hunters evening), which is a fine game dinner.

FRIDAY, FEB 21ST 7:00PM – 12:00AM KOLNER KARNEVAL

Join us in the Ratskeller for a fun celebration of a centuries old tra-ditional festival that is held annually in Cologne, Germany. The week-long festival, also called “the crazy days”, takes place be-tween Fat Thursday and Ash Wednesday, the last days to celebrate before the beginning of Lent.

Due to space limitations, only 100 tickets are available at $30 per person. They are only available at the bar and must be purchased prior to the event. Please note that this is an adults-only (over 21) event. Our event will be in true Cologne style featuring authentic beverages for purchase (one complimentary beverage is included in the price) such as our Kölsch beer (the only beer served at Karne-val), Killepitsch Schnapps and Sparkling Wine (wine similar to Prosecco). A special light appetizer buffet will be served that in-cludes many Cologne favorites. This is not a sit-down dinner. There will be a large open space to accommodate dancing and over-all merriment. There will be lively German Karneval music mixed with American favorites.

Costumes are a tradition and are highly encouraged. Please note that Karneval costumes are colorful and fun (not scary, like Hallow-een). An additional complimentary beverage will be provided for a proper costume. We will also have a special prize for the best cos-tume!

The first meeting of the new year for The Pittsburgh Stein Society will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020 in the Ratskeller of the Teutonia Club. A sandwich buffet lunch, featuring German meats and side dishes, will be served at 12:00 noon followed by the club meeting, stein sales and a "show-n-tell" segment where members will show us and tell us about their favorite or most unusual stein. Our meetings, with lunch, usually last about two hours, and all members and guests of the Teu-tonia Mannerchor club are always welcome to attend. So, come and enjoy a great sandwich, have a cold beer, learn a little about our hobby of stein collecting, and perhaps become the newest member of The Pittsburgh Stein Society. Oh, did I mention that we also have a 50/50 raffle where the lucky winner at our last meeting took home $75.00? Hope to see you on February 22nd. FIRST FRIDAY LUNCH AT TEUTONIA – AS CLOSE TO OLD GERMANY AS YOU CAN GET! Teutonia serves buffet lunches every Thursday and Friday, but once a month they take on the “sights, tastes and sounds” of an 1800’s Bavarian Beer Hall. The great German food is there, as always, but everyone has a special “Friday feeling” set by the German folk tunes. They are provided by the accordion of Conrad Ostertag, a second generation Swiss-German musician. And he is given help by some of the old singers at the round table near the Stamtisch who sing songs and try to persuade Conrad to join them with a superb yodel. Bring guests, immerse them in this old culture and celebrate “erster Freitag”! Always on the FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH.

THURSDAY, MAR 5TH 6:00PM – 9:00PM GLUHWEIN NIGHT

Another winter-warmer! Come and enjoy some homemade Glühwein from an old German recipe from Southern Bavaria! A traditional winter favorite found at almost every winter fest through-out Germany, Glühwein will warm your insides and provide a brace from the cold.

BIER KRUGMEISTER CALLS FOR PAYMENT OF PEG

FEES

Director Bob Lorenz requests that the annual “peg rental” fee of $15

be paid for this year, and if you failed to pay for 2019, bring it up to

date. The Bier Steins hanging above the bar allow our members to

show off their favorite stein and have it “at the ready” when they

stop by the club.

The pegs are highly desirable and there is a waiting list for open-

ings. Please pay your fee at the bar ASAP so you do not lose your

spot! When you pay, be sure to tell the bartender which peg and

stein are yours for proper credit. Unpaid fees will release the peg to

the members on the waiting list in April.

FATHER - DAUGHTER DINNER SCHEDULED FOR SUN-DAY MARCH 29TH – EARLY REMINDER

The relationship between a Father and Daughter is a special one. This event honors that relationship and allows you to celebrate it with your daughter in the historic surroundings of Teutonia. The event will start at 2:30pm with a flower and a photo for your daugh-ter.

Alcoholic beverages, soft drinks and snacks can be purchased. There will be light musical entertainment appropriate to honoring our daughters.

Dancing will follow to the music of Bill and Tanya Dorfner. It is a celebration of the wonder of daughters, and we invite Fathers and Grandfathers to bring their daughters and granddaughters of any age, older Brothers to bring their sister (in honor of their father) and Fathers to bring their Daughters-in-Law. Guest fathers and daugh-ters are invited, with a member. Traditional Dress required TEUTONIA MÃNNERCHOR GENEALOGY GROUP FEBRUARY 24, 2020

How did your ancestors get to this side of the pond? In February, we will look at some of the ways we can find ship and arrival rec-ords of our immigrant ancestors.

Passenger lists, passport applications, and census records give us clues. Join us for sharing your stories and discovering new paths to information on Monday, February 24th.

We welcome new and returning members to join us for this evening in the Ratskeller. Bring your laptop or tablet, any questions you may have, brick walls you need to crack, and enjoy an evening of camaraderie, and even a beer or two.

In the mean time for questions or information, contact Carole [email protected] or Diane Clawson [email protected] PLAY BOARD GAMES & HAVE FUN AT SPIELE ABEND (GERMAN BOARD GAME NIGHT)

Thursday, February 13, 2020 in the Ratskellar from 7:30 - 10:00 pm Curious about board gaming? Spiele Abend is the place to be! The Teutonia’s next German board game night is on Thursday, February 13th. Hosts Jim Viel and Nancy Ott will bring their collection of German-style board games. Whether you’re young or old, a begin-ner or an experienced gamer, we have games you’ll enjoy. All you have to do is play! Try a new game or play an old favorite. All members, their families, and their guests are invited. Children are welcome with adult supervision. Spiele Abend is usually held on the second Thursday of each month. The next Spiele Abend is on Thursday, March 12. For more infor-mation, contact Jim Viel at [email protected]. Featured Game: Catan Every month, we’ll feature a different board game that you can play

at Spiele Abend. February’s featured game is Catan. You and your fellow players are the plucky settlers of the island of Catan. Re-

sources like wood, stone, and wheat are randomly placed as tiles on the game board. Everyone starts out with just a couple of villages

and roads. As you trade resources and expand your settlements, you’ll vie for control of the island. Build roads, upgrade your vil-lages to cities, and acquire culture cards to bring civilization to

Catan! Players get points for villages and cities, the longest road, and culture cards. Catan is the first in a series of games based on

trade and exploration. To find out more, visit www.catan.com.

FASTNACHT/KARNEVAL (CARNIVAL/MARDI GRAS) - TEUTONIA 2020

THREE EVENTS – ATTEND THEM ALL!

Fasching is one of the major annual celebrations in German speak-ing countries. It is the celebration before Ash Wednesday – a last party before Lent!

While it is quite popular in the Rhineland, from Basel in Switzer-land and North to Mainz and beyond in Germany, it is also celebrat-ed in other cities, including Cologne (Köln). The events in Europe pre-date, but are like the festivities enjoyed in New Orleans, with parades, masquerades, parties and festivities.

Here at Teutonia we have three events.

A “KICKOFF” PARTY CALLED THE KAPPENABEND HELD ON SATURDAY, FEB 1ST

Members wear their craziest hats and enjoy an evening of fun and laughter in the Ratskeller – and select the King and Queen of Kar-neval.

THE KÖLNER KARNEVAL ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST IS HELD IN THE RATSKELLER

This celebrates the centuries old traditional festival that is held an-nually in Cologne, Germany. Due to space limitations, only 100 tickets are available and are priced at $30 per person. They are only available at the bar and must be purchased prior to the event.

Please note that this is an adults-only (over 21) event. Our event will be in true Cologne style featuring authentic beverag-es for purchase

OUR FASCHING DINNER AND BALL. ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND We invite our members and guests to our Fasching Dinner and Ball.

We offer an opportunity to dress up for the evening, assume your favorite persona, and join us for the start of Lent! As they say in Germany, “Am Aschermittwoch ist alles vorbei” (After Ash Wednesday, everything is over!”).

Tickets for this Sängerhalle celebration will be available at the bar. A band will give the revelers a chance to dance and celebrate the event with the King and Queen! Costumes are encouraged!

Please make dinner reservations -tickets for the Sängerhalle are available at the bar.

NOTICE:

On March 31st, The Teutonia Homebrew Society (newly forming

this month) will be hosting a “Homebrew Evening” on March 31st at 7:00pm in the Rathskeller. A call is being put out to all homebrew-

ers who would like to showcase their efforts at this special event. A special trophy will be awarded to the favorite brew as voted on by our members present.

If you would like to enter your special craft brew in this event,

please email [email protected] and register with your name, type of brew, and any other pertinent details. There is plenty

of time for sufficient “lagering” time for your brew. Help make this a special event and register your favorite homebrew today.
