INVITATION

With excellent human resources and vigorous entrepreneurial spirit, the Korean economyhas in the span of 60 years become the world's 10th largest economy. Its core industries,such as semi-conductors, automobiles and shipbui lding, boast world-classcompetitiveness.

Despite such a remarkable achievement, the uncertainties in and outside of the country,such as the rapid emergence of the BRICs economies, the change in the global tradeenvironment and the slowdown of the growth of core industries, Korea must once againlook to new opportunities to transform into a more advanced economy.

The Korean government has invited scholars and experts from home and abroad toevaluate Korea's strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and threats and todiscuss a vision to make Korea an advanced industrial nation by 2015.

I hope that you will take part in this meaningful forum to share your views in planning abrighter future for the Korean economy.

Alvin Toffler is an American writer and futurist, known for his works discussing the digital revolution,communications revolution, corporate revolution and technological singularity. A former associateeditor of Fortune magazine, his early work focused on technology and its impact (through effects likeinformation overload). Then he moved to examining the reaction of and changes in society. His laterfocus has been on the increasing power of 21st century military hardware, weapons and technologyproliferation, and capitalism. His publications are ‘Future Shock’(1970), ‘The Third Waves’(1980),‘Powershift: Knowledge, Wealth and Violence at the Edge of the 21st Century‘(1991) to mention af e w .

Jeffrey Pfeffer Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior

Graduate School of Business, Stanford UniversityJeffrey Pfeffer received his B.S. in Administration and Management Science and his M.S. in IndustrialAdministration from Carnegie-Mellon University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administrationfrom the Stanford Graduate School of Business. From 1994-1996, Dr. Pfeffer served as Director ofExecutive Education, responsible for all of the Stanford business schools’ executive educationactivities. He has taught executive seminars in 27 countries including Australia, New Zealand,Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium,Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Israel, Turkey,South Africa, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico in addition to lecturing in management developme n tprograms and consulting for many companies, associations, and universities in the United States.

앨빈토플러는디지털혁명, 통신혁명, 기업혁명및 기술지식의지배에대한논의로유명한

미국의작가이자미래학자이다. 이전에는‘미래’지의부편집장이었으며그의초기작업은기술과

고도 정보화로 인한 영향에 초점을 맞추었다. 그러나점점 사회문화변동으로관심의 초점을

옮겨 갔으며 나중에는 2 1세기의 군사 장비, 무기, 기술급증, 자본주의의권력확대로 관심을

옮겨갔다. 저서로는‘미래의충격’(1970), ‘제3의물결’(1980), ‘권력이동’( 1 9 9 1 )이있다.


미국의카네기멜론대학에서석사를, 스탠포드대학에서조직행동분야의논문으로박사학위를

받았다. 일리노이대학과버클리대학의교수를거쳐1 9 7 9년부터는모교인스탠퍼드대학에서

연구해 왔다. 1981~1982년에는하버드 경영대학원의교환 교수를 역임하기도했고, 현재는

스탠포드경영대학원의석좌교수로재직하고있다. 그는지금까지1 0권의저서와총 1 0 0여편에

이르는학술논문을발표하는등 왕성한 연구활동을하면서, 미국은물론전 세계적으로가장

영향력있는경영학자중의한 사람으로평가받고있다.

Paul A. Laudicina is Vice President and Managing Director of A.T. Kearney’s Global Business PolicyCouncil. Prior to joining A.T. Kearney, Mr. Laudicina was Vice President of SRI International (theformer Stanford Research Institute) and founder of its Policy Division. Previous positions held by Mr.Laudicina also include: Legislative Director in the United States Senate; Director of pre-investmentstudies for Mobil Corporation; Associate Fellow of the Overseas Development Council, and researchassociate for the United Nations’ Center for Economic and Social Information. Mr. Laudicina wasappointed by the President of the United States to the Board of Directors of the Western NewlyIndependent States Enterprise Fund. Beom-Do Heo Deputy Minister of Commerce, Industry and EnergyBeom-Do Heo received his B.S. degree in Business management from Pusan National University and completed theM.A. program in Public Enterprise at the Institute of Social Studies (I.S.S.), The Netherlands. He obtained his Ph.D.degree in Business Management from Soongsil University. He passed the 17th national examination for high-ranking government officials, and has served as the Deputy Director, the Head of the North/South America Tradedivision, and the Director of Asian Affairs, UNCTAD (Geneva, Switzerland) while serving at the Ministry ofCommerce (presently the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). He has served as the Director-General of theSmall & Medium Business Administration of the Pusan Regional Administration, the Director-General of GyeonggiRegional Administration, the Deputy Administrator, Small and Medium Business Administration as well as theStanding Commissioner of Korea Trade Commission (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). He is currentlyserving as the Deputy Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

Lester C. Thurow Professor, Economics and Management, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyLester C. Thurow is a Jerome and Dorothy Lemelson Professor of Management and Economics, SloanSchool of Management, Coordinator of MIT Asia-Pacific Initiatives and Chairman of the TechnionInstitute of Management, MIT. He has been the Dean of Sloan School of Management from 1987 to1993. He received B.A in Political Economy at the Williams Collge, M.A in Philosophy, Politics andEconomics at Oxford University and Ph.D. at Harvard University. Changmo Sung President, Inje UniversityChangmo Sung has been working as President of Inje University, Gyungnam Province for 18 monthsafter 23 years residence in the United States. He is also serving as Presidential Committee on BalancedNational Development, Presidential Commission on Policy Planning, and National Special Committee ofInnovation Science Technology. Based on his engineering faculty experience of Academia-Industrycollaborative, technology transfer, and commercialization in Boston Route 128 and 495, Dr. Sung isinvolved in planning and execution of Korean high tech clusters for advanced regional economicdevelopment. Dong Sung Cho Professor, College of Business Administration, Seoul National UniversityDong Sung Cho is Dean of the College of Business Administration, and Professor of Strategy andInternational Business, at Seoul National University. When he graduated from SNU, He attended HarvardBusiness School and earned doctorate degree. He was with Boston Consulting Group and Gulf OilCorporation before joining the SNU faculty in 1978. He served as an economic advisor to the SocialistRepublic of Sri Lanka. In 1995, he helped the Republic of Honduras in promoting exportation andattracting investment from overseas. He led the project for privatizing Korea Telecom in 1995 and KoreaHeavy Machinery Company in 2000. During 1993-98, he was President of the Institute of IndustrialPolicy Studies, a policy advisory board for the Korean government. He has published thirty-eight booksand over ninety articles.

조동성교수는서울대학교국제전략및 경영학교수이다. 1971년에서울대를졸업하고1 9 7 6년

에하버드경제학부박사학위를취득했다. 보스턴컨설팅그룹과걸프코퍼레이션에서일한바있고

1 9 7 8년부터서울대에서교편을잡아왔다. 1990년부터1 9 9 1년에는스리랑카경제고문을역임

하였고, 1995년에는수출장려 및 해외로부터의 투자유치에 있어 온두라스 공화국에 도움을

주었다. 1995년에한국통신, 2000년에한국중공업의민영화 프로젝트를이끌었으며, 1993년

최운열 서강대학교대외부총장

His role is toencourage employer engagement in learning and skills development. He has principal responsibility forthe development of (a national network of employer-led) and (UK wide Sector Skills Councils) whichprovide strategic leadership and action to meet their sector's skills development and business needs. Inreturn, they receive substantial public investment and greater dialogue with government departmentsacross the UK. As part developing and delivering the UK Skills Strategy, Simon leads policy on thedevelopment of new national Skills Academies and Centres of Vocational Excellence based in the furthereducation sector.
