Gianyar (Bali Post)Condition of Gianyar Library, Ar-

chives and Documentation Office isnow very apprehensive. The officecomplex located on Jalan CiungWanara, Gianyar, no longer looks rep-resentative to store important docu-ments. If it rains heavily like duringthis season, the roofs of building leakeverywhere.

This apprehensiveness was de-livered by the Head of Gianyar Li-brary, Archives and DocumentationOffice Ida Ayu Suci in the midst ofthe opening of the archival techni-cal guidance in Gianyar, last Sun-

Badra said why until that momentthe Community Health Center ofKarangasem I situated at Seraya usedfor inpatient care could not be oper-ated because there was no residentialhouse for physician. As a result, thephysician of local health center founddifficulty to live at Seraya. In fact, forthe community health center handlinginpatient treatment, the physician incharge should remain to stand by andwas not allowed to leave the center.

Since the community health centerhad not been functioned for inpatientcare, many residents of three villagesat Seraya namely Central, East andWest Seraya should take inpatient ser-vices to Karangasem Hospital. It wasreally a very long distance. Badraasked the government to provide phy-sician assistance along with residen-tial house at Seraya. He hoped that lo-cal residents needing inpatient treat-ment could be treated at the health cen-ter located within easy reach fromSeraya.

In the meantime, Badra also added, the condition of Seraya undergoingdroughts for hundreds of years causedmany local communities remain to liveunder poverty line. The problem layon the majority of local residents thatearned their livelihood as dry landfarmers where they could only grow

In fact, the Bahasa Indonesia sub-ject featured as a ‘killing machine’ inthe main national examination (UN) forsenior high school (SMA/MA) in this2009/2010 academic year. The major-ity of students from the Language Pro-gram, Social Sciences/Natural Sciencesand Religious Program were declaredto have not passed the exam becausethey failed to meet the standard with aminimum score at 4.25 for this subject.Subdivision Head of Secondary Edu-cation, Bali Educational, Youth andSports Services (Disdikpora), IGKNgurah Widiartha, revealed the matterlast Sunday (Apr 25).

According to Widiartha, the num-ber of UN participants for SMA / MAbelonging to Social Sciences / ReligiousSciences in Bali was recorded 11, 328students where 9,339 students (96.86percent) passed and 293 students (3.14percent) did not pass. Out of the 293students who did not pass, 206 of whomfailed to reach a minimum score of 4.25for graduation in Bahasa Indonesia sub-ject, 31 students failed in English, 34students failed in Math, 70 studentsfailed in Economics, 117 students failedin Sociology and 35 students failed inGeography.

For the Language Program fol-lowed by 4,895 participants, he said,5,542 students (92.79 percent) passedand 353 students (7.21 percent) did notpass. In details, the subjects causingthe failure included Bahasa Indonesia(288 students), English (7), Mathemat-ics (72), Indonesian Literature (24),other Foreign Languages (3) and An-thropology (74).

Meanwhile, participant of the UNfor the Natural Sciences program wasrecorded 11,328 students where11,272 students (99.51 percent) passedand 56 students (0.49 percent) failed.Subjects causing the failure included

Village Chief of Seraya Tengah, Karangasem, I Ketut Badra, reported to the State Ministerfor Acceleration of Backward Region Development (PDT) H Ahmad Helmi Faishal Zaini andwife, last Thursday (Apr 22) about inpatient services at Seraya community health center untilnow had not been functioning. State Minister of PDT was received at local Tenggang Village Hall.In addition, Badra also conveyed that Seraya had faced drought and local residents were underserious water crisis for hundreds of years during the dry season.

crops for one time a year by plantingcorn as the main crop. Currently, morepeople wished there would be more as-sistance of gamelina (Gamelinaasiatica) seed for greening the area withthe extent of 1,300 hectares at SerayaVillage. Gamelina tree was known bythe public to have a lot of benefits wherethe leaves were good for fodder and itsgreat quality wood was good enoughfor sale. His party needed 200,000 moregamelina seeds.

Meanwhile, the Regent ofKarangasem I Wayan Geredeg beforethe Minister said the not-functioningof Seraya Community Health Centerfor inpatient treatment was caused bythe center was prepared in stages. Thenumber of physician was still limitedand this year would be proposed tothe central government for new ap-pointment of physician as civil ser-vants. In 2009 his party did not re-ceive civil servants including physi-cians because of the budget for sal-ary and allowance stayed limited. Headmitted the residential house in-tended for the physician assigned atSeraya community health center wasnot available and would be builtgradually.

Similarly, Geredeg also recog-nized that Seraya encountered hun-dreds of years of drought. On that

account, his party would initiate thepipeline project for clean water fromits source at Embukan, Tirtaganggawith capacity of 6 liters per second.Installation of the new pipelineprojects had reached Tegallinggah.Related to the limited fund availabil-ity for the clean water pipeline worthIDR 27 billion and only left approxi-mately IDR 4 billion, Geredeg ex-pected there would an additional helpfrom the ministry of PDT, so the pipe-line project could reach Central andEast Seraya.

Meanwhile, regarding to the de-mand of Seraya Village Chief and Re-gent Geredeg, State Minister of PDTsaid such public input had been logged. Then, concerning with the assistanceon the procurement of physician, offi-cial residential house and seedlings ofgamelina (Dutch teak) to be planted bySeraya community Seraya were ex-pected could be allocated in the 2011national state budget.

Given, other than at Seraya, theavailability of physician and medi-cal facilities in other regions, includ-ing the remote areas and borders withother countries such as in Kalimantanand Irian Jaya, was also still very lim-ited. It required a large amount ofbudget to supply it so the central gov-ernment should think hard. (013)

Nevertheless, she attempted to per-sistently maintain the national and re-gional archives in order their condi-tion stayed safe. The technical guid-ance was also intended to equip theparticipants on the importance ofmaintaining the records.

Similarly, she explained that only asmall portion of government offices, agencies and other institutions storing

their archives in the office they chaired.?This could happen in the library of-fice with deplorable condition. In thefuture, it will be directed that all de-partments, agencies and governmentoffices to save their files in the officeof the Regional Library,? she said.

In the meantime, Sriyanto remindedthat archival documents were very im-portant to be saved for the sake of fu-ture generations. Regarding to the ap-prehensive condition of the office, allparties had to provide an appreciationso that Gianyar could have a represen-tative office and a comfortable libraryfor storing the archives. Bahasa Indonesia becomes‘a killing machine’

Bahasa Indonesia (34), Mathematics (8students), English (31 students), Phys-ics (9), Chemistry (4) and Biology (36).If the causes of failure were accumu-lated for the three programs held at thehigh school, the Bahasa Indonesiamight be cited as the ?main killing ma-chine.? This condition was very differ-ent from the national exam in last yearwhere the highest cause of failure to stu-dents was English. ?The appearance ofBahasa Indonesia as a killing machineis quite surprising considering thatBahasa Indonesia is our national lan-guage,? said Widiartha regretfully.

In vocational education, saidWidiartha, Bahasa Indonesian also fea-tured as a ?killing machine.? The num-ber of UN participant in Bali for voca-tional high school (SMK) was re-corded 15,425 students where 15,034students (97.47 percent) passed andremaining 319 students (2.53 percent)did not pass. Out of the 319 partici-pants who did not pass the exam, therewere 235 students stumbling in thesubject of Bahasa Indonesia, 135 stu-dents failed to reach a minimum scorein English subject, 138 students failedin Math, 76 students failed in the Vo-cational Theory and 4 other studentsfailed in Productive test.

In order to achieve the UN passedpredicate, said Widiartha, UN partici-pants of SMA / MA level should ob-tain a minimum average score of 5.50for all subjects tested with a minimumscore of 4.00 for at most two subjectsand a minimum of 4.25 for another sub-ject. Especially for vocational school, the score of skill competency test shouldreach minimally 7.00 and they wouldbe used to calculate the average of theUN. The standard of minimal averagescore was imposed in exactly the sameas that applied to the UN in the last year2008/2009. (ian)

The Yemeni officials said thevehicle was passing through a poorneighborhood in the eastern part ofSan’a when an explosion went offnearby. They said they believed theattacker was wearing an explosivesbelt and that he was killed in theexplosion.

There was no claim of responsi-bility for the attack, but it bore thehallmarks of al-Qaida.

Witnesses said the attacker wasa young man who wore a schooluniform, apparently as a disguise. The officials said the neighborhoodwhere the attack took place waspopular with militants.

The officials spoke on conditionof anonymity because they were notauthorized to speak to the media.

The Foreign Office in Londonsaid the embassy has been closedto the public and warned all Britishnationals in Yemen to “keep a lowprofile and remain vigilant.”

Last Friday, a half dozen police of-ficers showed up at the Qinghai Na-tionalities Publishing House, where heworked, and escorted him away, ac-cording to a blog post written by afriend. They searched his home and li-brary, confiscating his computers.

Afterward, they showed his arrestwarrant to his wife, and asked her tobring bedding for him. When his twodaughters went to the police station theywere not allowed to meet with him, theposting said.

There was no way to independentlyconfirm the accusation. On Monday, the Xining Police Department refusedto answer questions regarding hiswhereabouts, saying it had no com-ment. The police referred questions to

BANGKOK – Thailand’s “RedShirt” protesters, wary of a pos-sible crackdown, told their follow-ers to ditch their signature crimsonattire so they can go undercover asmore bomb threats rattled the tenseThai capital Monday.

There was no violence in thecentral Bangkok shopping areawhere protesters remainedcamped for a 24th day, but an ex-plosion injured eight people lateSunday near the home of formerPrime Minister Banharn Silapa-archa, who is allied to the rulingcoalition, police said.

A bomb disposal team rushedearly Monday to the city’s finan-cial district amid reports of an-other explosive device at the edgeof Silom Road, where five gre-nade blasts last week left one per-son dead and more than 80wounded. It was a false alarm.

the Ministry of Public Security. It’s unclear whether the open letter

was the direct cause of his detention. The Chinese government has been atpains to quash any criticism of its reliefefforts in the Tibetan region.

Zhogs Dung, 45, is considered a lead-ing intellectual and thinker who in thepast has written books that largelyaligned with the Chinese government’sviews on modernization, religion andculture in Tibet. However, he publisheda book this year that was far more criti-cal of the government in the wake ofanti-government riots in Tibet in 2008.

The letter urged people to help vic-tims by offering food, clothes and medi-

cine but warned them not to donatefunds to relief organizations, warningof possible corruption.

“Better to send (money) to the di-saster zone with people you trust, be-cause nobody can tell where there’s nocorruption,” said the letter, which wasposted on several websites, includingthe overseas Boxun.com, which is criti-cal of the Chinese government.

“Just as the news from the mouth-piece for the (communist) party orga-nizations cannot be believed, we darenot believe in the party organization, which issued the order stopping peoplefrom going to the disaster zone for po-litical reason,” it said.

Yellow Shirts have stepped up de-mands that authorities crack downon the demonstrators, implyingthey might take matters into theirown hands if nothing is done soon.

“The government has the re-sponsibility to protect the people, but instead shows its weaknessand inability to enforce the law,”said Suriyasai Katasila, a leaderof the Yellow Shirts.

He also called on his support-ers to join up with civic groupsaround the country to take actionagainst the Red Shirts and theirenclave in the city.

Red Shirt leaders have urgedtheir supporters in provincial ar-eas to confront security forcesbeing brought in to help crackdown on the protests.

More than 1,000 protesters setup a roadblock over the weekendalong a major highway, deflatingthe tires of 13 police vans and pre-venting police reinforcementsfrom reaching Bangkok from thenortheast province of Udon Thani, the government said.

Another 300 protesters set uproadblocks on the outskirts of thecapital Sunday afternoon to stophundreds of other police from en-tering the city, police officialssaid.

Protesters in the Nong Kaiprovince also tried to block policefrom heading to Bangkok, but thesecurity forces changed theirroute, the government said.

The conflict has been charac-terized by some as class warfare.

The Red Shirts consist mainlyof rural supporters of formerPrime Minister ThaksinShinawatra and pro-democracyactivists who opposed the militarycoup that ousted him in 2006.They believe Prime MinisterAbhisit Vejjajiva’s government —backed by the urban elite — is il-legitimate because military pres-sure and complex legal maneuver-ing brought it to power.

Over the weekend, Abhisit re-jected a compromise offer by theRed Shirts dashing hopes for apeaceful end to the standoff.

If we view the roots of the termGeothermal, we will find that it comesfrom the Greek language; Geo andThermos. Geo means earth and Ther-mos means heat. So, geothermal meanenergy that generated from the earth.

The use of geothermal energy in theworld is already very popular. In fact, based on articles from Wikipedia, theuse of geothermal has been done sincePaleolithic era. At that time, the geo-thermal water used for bathing. Nowa-days, this energy is utilized for gener-ate electricity.

Worldwide, geothermal powerplants have capacity to meet the needsof approximately 10 Giga Watt ofpower at the year 2007. But on its prac-tice, it was only supplying 0.3 percentof global electricity demand. While asmany as 28 Giga Watt of thermal en-ergy used for heating, spa, industrialprocesses, and other agricultural ap-plications.

Geothermal energy is energy thatis affordable, reliable, renewable, andvery environment-friendly. It is alsoadmitted by the head of geology in theMinistry of Energy and Mineral Re-sources (ESDM) R. Shukyar.

Shukyar said the geothermal energyis commonly found in path of the vol-cano, as one of renewable energy. Infact, the potency in Indonesia is enor-mous. Currently Indonesia is alreadyutilizing 1,194 MW of geothermal

Geothermal; clean energy, environment-friendly,and renewable resource

World geothermal con-gress (WGC) is held in Balistarting from April 25th to30th. Located in NusaDua, it is estimated thataround 2500 participantsparticipated in this so-called mega event ofgeothermal field. They willbe present and provideconceptual contribution ofscience related to geother-mal development. Be-tween the hustle andbustle of the world-levelmeeting, many people stilldon’t have a clue aboutgeothermal. Actually whatis Geothermal and why it isconsider as an environ-mentally friendly and cleanenergy?

energy that being use as electricity. In2014, Indonesia plan to increase theuse of geothermal to meet the demandfor electricity into 4,000 MW. Thistarget was already expressed by Presi-dent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in ameeting with governors all aroundIndonesia that had been took place atthe Palace View Siring, Gianyar. ‘’Ofthe ten thousand MW that will be pro-duced according to National Electric-ity Road Map in 2014, 4,000 MW ofwhich came from geothermal,’’ saidSukhyar.

Currently, Indonesia is the thirdlargest country that uses geothermalenergy as a power source. UnitedStates and the Philippines the twocountries ranked in the first and sec-ond in the utilization of geothermalenergy. Based on the data, ‘’The U.S.utilized around 2,900 MW whiles thePhilippines utilizing around 1,300MW,’’ cleared Sukhyar.

In realizing the benefits and theclean energy that being produced bygeothermal, it is why geothermal be-come the energy choice of many coun-tries. But not all countries have asource of geothermal energy. Indone-sia is one of the lucky countries be-cause it is located in the path of thevolcano and has this renewable energysources in massive quantities.

Sukhyar expressed that many re-gions in Indonesia have been kept this

source of energy. Indonesia’s geother-mal potential reached about 35-40percent of existing geothermal re-sources in the world. Bali is one of theareas that have potential of geother-mal energy.

For the utilization of geothermalenergy into electricity in Indonesia, one company focusing on these areasis Pertamina Geothermal Energy(PGE). Pertamina subsidiary that wasestablished in 2006 was mandated todevelop 15 concession working areasof geothermal energy in Indonesia.PGE know have nine locations to tapthe geothermal resources into electric-

ity, ie Sibayak, Full River, Ulubelu,Lumut Balai, Hululais, Tompaso,Lahendong, Kotamobagu, andKamojang.

With the presence of the latest tech-nology of geothermal energy utiliza-tion, the number and magnitude of theresource to be managed are expectedto be larger. Geothermal wells capableof releasing greenhouse gases that aretrapped in earth. However, emissionsare much smaller per unit of energycompared the emissions from fossilfuels. As a result, Geothermal has thepotential to help mitigate global warm-ing if developed widely. (iah)

KUWAIT CITY - KuwaitOil Minister Sheikh AhmadAbdullah al-Sabah said on Mon-day that current oil prices of 75to 85 dollars a barrel do not ham-per the global economic recovery.

“So far in 2010, we havewitnessed a stable level of oilprices at between 75 and 85 dol-lars a barrel,” the minister told theopening session of the 18thMiddle East Petroleum and GasConference.

“This price will not createhurdles for the world economicrecovery,” said Sheikh Ahmad.

Oil prices extended gains inAsian trade Monday after a risein US home sales stoked optimismfor a firmer rebound in the world’sbiggest economy, analysts said.

New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery inJune, rose 41 cents to 85.53 dol-lars a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude forJune was up 35 cents to 87.60 dol-lars.

The Kuwaiti minister, whosecountry is OPEC’s fourth largestexporter, said the OPEC cartelwill step in to raise output if oilprices soar above 100 dollars abarrel.

Sheikh Ahmad said Kuwaitwill continue to invest in crudecapacity increases to reach its tar-get of four million barrels per dayby 2020.

targeting 3.5 million bpd in 2015and four million bpd by 2020 and“we plan to sustain it until 2030.”

Kuwait, which discoverednon-associated natural gas for thefirst time in 2006, is still on targetto produce one billion cubic feet(28 million cubic meters) per dayof non-associated, or free gas in2016.

The emirate currently pro-duces around 140 million cubic feetper day of non-associated gas, butthis is way behind its original tar-get for 2010 of 200 million cubicfeet per day.

As a result, Kuwait in Febru-ary signed a technical serviceagreement with Shell to develop itsdifficult free gas reserves.

Sheikh Ahmad said Kuwait“encourages other IOCs (interna-tional oil companies) to follow theShell example,” adding that theemirate is in talks with a numberof oil majors and hopes to make anannouncement shortly.

The chief executive officer ofKuwait Petroleum Corp. (KPC)Saad al-Shuwayeb told reportersthat Kuwait also produces one bil-lion cubic feet of associated gasalongside its crude oil output.

But despite its abundant re-serves, the emirate still has a gasshortfall due to rising domesticpower consumption and started toimport liquefied natural gas by ves-sel in significant quantities at thebeginning of April.

It plans to import an average500 million cubic feet per day ofLNG until the end of October, ac-cording to Shuwayeb.

PARIS - The price the Greek government must pay to borrow fresh funds shot above 9.0percent on Monday for the first time since Greece joined the eurozone in 2001, despite an appealby Athens for EU-IMF help.

record high of close to nine percenton Friday.

Greece now has to offer morethan double the rate the eurozonebenchmark country Germany needsto offer to raise new funds.

On Friday, after months of un-certainty, Athens called on the Euro-pean Union and the IMF to activatea rescue deal worth about 45 billioneuros (60 billion dollars) at about fivepercent in a first year.

The Greek issue dominatedweekend IMF and Group of 20meetings in Washington, with offi-cials trying to nail down the detailswell before May 19 when some 8.5billion euros of Greek debt falls due.

Analyst Padhraic Garvey at INGsaid that the prospect of Greece hav-ing eventually to restructure its debt— meaning holders of its bonds willlose money — cannot be ruled out.

“For the (debt) restructuringidea to go away, the market has gotto play ball and facilitate a fall inGreek yields,” Garvey said.

“The higher that Greek ...yields go the bigger is the hole that

Greece finds itself in and that is whyinvestors are fearing the worst,” headded.

Greek officials insisted overthe weekend that there was abso-lutely no question of Athens seek-ing to restructure its debt.

The rate on Portugal’s 10-yeargovernment bond rose to 4.958 per-cent on Monday from 4.893 percenton Friday. The yield on Spanishbonds rose 4.017 percent, and onIrish 10-year debt to 4.815 percent.

At BNP Paribas bank in Paris, analysts said: “It is clear that near-term doubts will remain on the abil-ity of Greece to exit the crisis viaonly drawing the EU-IMF assis-tance plan.

“In addition, ratings agenciescould decide further downgradeeven if an agreement on a financialsupport is reached.”

They remarked: “Greece willremain under the spotlight withspeculation about debt reschedul-ing-restructuring and concernsover the contagion effects to per-sist for a while.”

Details of the new tax were notyet finalised, the report said, suchas whether it would be levied againstall homes or merely on additionalresidences purchased by an indi-vidual home-buyer beyond the firstproperty.

The report came after Beijingrecently announced a range of newmeasures to prevent the growth ofasset bubbles and soaring propertyprices.

Official data showed real es-tate prices in 70 cities jumped 11.7percent in March, the fastest year-on-year rise for a single month infive years.

The government has recentlytightened restrictions on advancesales of new property developments, introduced new curbs on loans forthird home purchases, and raisedminimum down payments for sec-ond homes.

State media reports last weekalso said banking regulators had or-dered lenders to conduct quarterlystress tests on mortgages as the gov-ernment tries to clamp down on badloans and rein real estate specula-tion.

The new property tax was alsoexpected to help replenish the cof-fers of local governments, whichhave been severely depleted by thegovernment-led investment binge ofthe past year linked to an economicstimulus programme, the report said.

ACTOR-turned-environmental-ist Pierce Brosnan is urging U.S.government officials to take a stron-ger stand against whale hunting ininternational waters. The Irish ac-tor has become passionate aboutpreserving marine life since narrat-ing new Disneynature documentaryOceans, which explores the seas andwhat lies beneath them.

And he’s outraged after learningwhale hunting has continued in Ja-pan, Norway and Iceland despite aglobal whaling moratorium, whichtook effect in 1986. The U.S. andother anti-whaling countries re-cently sought to strike a deal to cre-ate an international monitoring sys-tem to ensure a steadily-decliningwhale hunt.

But Brosnan wants officials totake a no-tolerance policy: “They

(U.S. government) seem to be in favor of allowing Japan and Norway togo out and hunt whales again. It means they can go out there and startkilling whales. It’s in moratorium so it’s not determined how many theycan kill. Normally, there’s no justification for killing these creatures.Scientifically, there’s no justification. So if you want to do somethingabout stopping the possible slaughter of whales, then you have to pickup the phone and call The White House.”

And the movie star hopes his new nature film will encourage young-sters to fight to save the world’s whales. He adds, “That is why this filmis so important to be seen. I think it will inspire many young people todo good things for the ocean... That is why I’m so passionate about thismovie, so people can go see it and hopefully oppose this deal agree-ment. “These creatures are in jeopardy once more.”

She says it has greatly helpedher psychotherapeutic treatment foranxiety from her advanced ovariancancer. BERLIN – Tired of spinning thatsteering wheel? Try this: Germanresearchers have developed a newtechnology that lets drivers steercars using only their eyes. Raul

AP Photo/Gero Breloer

Scientist David Latotzky of Freie Universitaet Berlin sits in a car turn-ing the steering wheel with his eye movements in Berlin, Friday, April23, 2010. The scientists developed the software ‘EyeDriver’ to steertheir car ‘Spirit of Berlin’ just by the movement of the eyes.

New way to guide a car: With your eyes, not handsRojas, an artificial intelligence re-searcher at Berlin’s Free University, said Friday that the technologytracks a driver’s eye movement and,in turn, steers the car in whateverdirection they’re looking.

Rojas and his team presented the

technology-packed prototype undera clear blue sky at an airport in theGerman capital. The Dodge Caravancrisscrossed the tarmac at the aban-doned Tempelhof Airport, its driverusing his line of sight to control thecar. The car’s steering wheel wasturning as if guided by ghostlyhands. The technology calledeyeDriver lets the car drive up to 31mph (50 kph). “The next step willbe to get it to drive 60 miles perhour,” Rojas said.

Ultimately, however, the Mexi-can-born researcher is aiming foreven more: “The biggest challengeis of course to drive in a city withpedestrians and lots of obstacles.”For now, exercises remain relativelysimple. The Dodge chases a pedes-trian or another car across the tarmacand shows his agility and even drivesbackward — the driver only has tolook into the rear mirror to guide thecar. However, it remains unclearwhen — or if — the technology willbe commercialized as questionsabout safety and practicabilityabound: What about looking at a cutegirl next to the road for a few sec-

onds? Not to mention taking phonecalls or typing a text while driving.

But the researchers have an an-swer to distracted drivers: “TheSpirit of Berlin” is also an autono-mous car equipped with GPS navi-gation, scores of cameras, lasers andscanners that enable it to drive byitself. “The car can do everything. Itcan drive autonomously or it can beguided by a driver’s eyes,” Rojassaid. The compromise is a mode thathas the car driving on its own, bas-ing its decisions on input from scan-ners and cameras, and only requiresthe driver to give guidance at cross-roads. “The car stops at intersectionsand asks the driver for guidance onwhich road to take,” the researcherssay. A few seconds of attention withthe driver looking in his desired di-rection get the car flowing again.

To demonstrate the car’s au-tonomy, Rojas at one point jumpedin front of the car — which was atthat moment driving at perhaps 10miles per hour — and the Dodge wasimmediately stopped by the camerasthat had detected the obstacle. “I waslucky this time,” Rojas said jokingly.

While Rojas escaped, driver DavidLatotzky sat calmly on the passen-ger seat, wearing a bicycle helmet thatis key to the functioning of theEyeDriver: One camera mounted ontop of it monitors the street, a secondone constantly keeps track of thedriver’s eyes’ movements. “We chosea bicycle helmet because they’re themost ergonomic ones,” Rojas said.Selling that technology to customers, however, might be a tough call — itthe driver look like he or she camestraight out of a Star Wars movie.

But if using your eyes for steer-ing seems to tricky anyway, the re-searchers already have an alterna-tive: Use your iPhone instead. In falllast year they presented a technol-ogy that allows to use Apple’s smartphone as remote control for the car.“Autonomous driving systems mayconsiderably change our mobility inthe future,” Rojas said. And shouldthe technology-packed vehicle havea major bug, there’s still an old fash-ioned way of stopping it. Two bigexternal emergency buttons at therear of the car allow people outsideto shut down all systems.

NEW YORK – The big white pill was brought to her in an earthenware chalice. She’d already heldhands with her two therapists and expressed her wishes for what it would help her do. She swallowed it, layon the couch with her eyes covered, and waited. And then it came. “The world was made up of jewels andI was in a dome,” she recalled. Surrounded by brilliant, kaleidoscopic colors, she saw the dome open up toadmit “this most incredible luminescence that made everything even more beautiful.”

search is not easy, Doblin and oth-ers say, with government funders stillleery and drug companies not inter-ested in the compounds they can’tpatent. That pretty much leaves pri-vate donors. “There’s still a lot ofresistance to it,” said David Nichols,a Purdue University professor ofmedicinal chemistry and president ofthe Heffter Institute, which is sup-porting the NYU study. “The wholehippie thing in the 60s” and mediacoverage at the time “has kind of lefta bad taste in the mouth of the pub-lic at large.

“When you tell people you’retreating people with psychedelics, the first thing that comes to mind isDay-Glo art and tie-dyed shirts.”Nothing like that was in evidence theother day when Edlich revisited theroom at NYU where she’d takenpsilocybin. Landscape photos andabstract art hung on the walls, flow-ers and a bowl of fruit adorned a tablenear the window. At the foot of thecouch lay an Oriental rug. “Thewhole idea was to create a livingroom-like setting” that would be re-laxing, said study leader Dr. StephenRoss. Edlich, whose cancer forcedher to retire from teaching French ata private school, had plenty of rea-son to seek help through the NYUproject. Several recurrences of herovarian cancer had provoked fearsabout suffering and dying and howher death would affect her family.

She felt “profound sadness that mylife was going to be cut short.” Andshe faced existential questions: Whylive? What does it all mean? Howcan I go on?

“These things were in my headand I wanted them to take a back seatto living in the moment,” she said.So when she heard NYU research-ers speak about the project at hercancer support group, she was inter-ested. Psilocybin has been shown toinvoke powerful spiritual experi-ences during the four to six hours itaffects the brain. A study publishedin 2008, in fact, found that even 14months after healthy volunteers hadtaken a single dose, most said theywere still feeling and behaving bet-ter because of the experience. Theyalso said the drug had produced oneof the five most spiritually signifi-cant experiences they’d ever had.Experts emphasize people shouldn’ttry psilocybin on their own becauseit can be harmful, sometimes caus-ing bouts of anxiety and paranoia.

The NYU study is testing whetherthat drug experience can help withthe nine months of psychotherapyeach participant also gets. Thetherapy seeks to help patients livefuller, richer lives with the time theyhave left. Each study participant getstwo drug-dose experiences, but onlyone of those involves psilocybin; theother is a placebo dose of niacin, which makes the face flush.

The pill couldcould either contain a placebo or psilocybin, the psychoactive ingre-dient in hallucinogenic mushrooms. To insure a positive outcome forthe patient, the study relies on historical and cultural rituals that sur-round the taking of a hallucinogenic drug.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT’s sis-ter publication Autocar at theBeijing Motor Show on Friday,Felisa says that F1 could improveits relevance to the road car indus-try by adopting such engines. “If F1has to develop something helpful forreal driving conditions, then the bestsolution is for an engine that is tur-bocharged and GDI,” said Felisa.

“That is what we would support.“It is the best solution for driv-

ing efficiency and utilisation ofthe engine in a positive way.” Ear-lier this week, Mercedes Benzmotorsport boss Norbert Haugsaid he too expected smallerpower units to be adopted - buturged caution for those whothought it would be possible tomake the sport totally ‘green’.“The fascinating thing about For-

“We need to be mind-ful that we are buildingthe cleanest cars we can.The engine will bedownsized in 2013 be-cause the fuel consump-tion has to go down, andwe need to cut carbonemissions. But we mustnot think that a 700bhpengine is going to be thegreenest car ever, becausethat’s not great.”
