•  R&E needs to once again create a new innovation space that is “way out in front”. !

•  Strategy 1: Invest in dramatically increasing capacity!–  Once again create massive capacity for innovation that breaks

from commoditized business models!–  Must be an end to end approach, not an aggregated approach!

•  Strategy 2: Open the network software stack itself to programmability to allow applications innovation!–  Adopt “Software Defined Networking”; push broad deployment!–  Adopt OpenFlow as the first open SDN tool, and focus on open!–  Create open national operating environments that welcome

disruptive technology at scale!•  Strategy 3: Promote a community applications

development activity!

Internet2 Innovation investment:

•  Create a national platform for applications innovation with 100G backbone links, 100G towards campuses and SDN throughout!–  First phase partnership with Stanford & Indiana (NDDI) underway!–  Build broader concepts of virtualization and inter-domain support!–  Expand collaboration with NSF/GENI for network SDN innovation!

•  Convene Community to encourage use as the primary platform!–  Development of middleware for an SDN “application store” allowing

innovators to offer their “products” to a wide user base for trial!–  Coordination with our industry partners to make Internet2 sticky for their

innovations and collaboration.!

GENI / Internet2 Agreement A major step towards campus expansion

•  Collaboration to implement national-scale infrastructure: –  sliced and deeply-programmable –  incorporating OpenFlow/SDN switches, GENI Racks,

university datacenters, etc. –  high-speed (10-100 Gbps initially)

•  With software that supports shared use by faculty, students, and campus IT organizations

•  Gradual migration from today’s “prototype GENI” backbone in Internet2 to a real, production system

•  Scaling to an envisioned goal of 100-200 GENI campuses

N  E  W  S

Note that this agreement does not exclude either party from additional collaborations.

Opens the door for “at-scale” GENI !

NSF Cyberinfrastructure Solicitation CC-NIE proposal deadline: May 30, 2012

•  Funds campus cyber-infrastructure for domain science and for computer science

•  Can fund “GENI enabling” your campus!

•  Can help build a coherent, end-to-end GENI across the United States

•  Interested? Talk to your CIO !

•  See: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12541/nsf12541.htm •  Internet2 and GPO can help you engage with your CIO and domain scientists. •  Contacts: [email protected] or [email protected]

•  Success depends on leading campuses becoming deeply engaged early in a joint effort.!–  By necessity of potential costs, focus on the top innovators at the

start, not necessarily all Internet2 members at the start (0-18 months)!–  NSF and GENI are investing in regional and campus projects!–  Campus IT, College of Engineering, Campus Tech Incubators!

•  Requires collaboration across campus, regional, national and industry partners!

•  Success requires thinking differently about commodity and innovation funding strategies throughout the ecosystem!–  This investment is is just that, at least in the short term!–  Ideally separate thinking about this platform from legacy business

models.!
