Boland Park-krieketstadion is vandag kalm, rustig en stil. Op 6 Maart sal dit ‘rock’. Die stadion sal weergalm op die maat van wilgerhout op leer wanneer die kolf die bal tref, en leer op hout wanneer die bal die paaltjies tref, gemeng met die polsende klanke van toeskouer-ondersteuning. Alles deel van die krieket-interskole.

Dit is voorwaar vir ons ‘n voorreg om hierdie baie populêre geleentheid aan te bied. Vanjaar is verskeie borge betrokke by die toernooi – wat ‘n bewys is van die waarde wat aan die krieket-interskole geheg word. Dit is ons wens dat hierdie jaarlikse interskole ‘n instelling sal wees wat net so gesog is as die rugby-interskole.

Sterkte aan elke speler wat deelneem. Verder hoop ons dat vanjaar se wedstryde deur almal geniet sal

word en dat elke speler mooi herinneringe hieraan sal koester. Alhoewel die hedendaagse tendens ‘n wen-bo-alles een is, weet ons tog dat mooi vriendskappe gevorm sal word en dat die wenmotief nie alles sal wees nie.

Laat ons onthou dat die spel ook vir die genot daarvan gespeel word.

Die voorreg om weer eens ’n interskole in die pragtige Paarl-natuurskoon te geniet, is ’n besondere stukkie genade waarvoor ons alle eer aan ons Hemelse Vader gee.

‘n Besondere woord van dank gaan in die eerste plek aan almal wat betrokke is by die reëlings vir die 2015-krieketinterskole, en veral aan Paarl Gimnasium wat vanjaar as gasheer optree. Die fenomenale kwaliteite en toewyding van beide personeelgroepe is maar weer ‘n bewys van die diverse bekwaamheid van hierdie kollegas! Laat ons ook hulde bring aan die lang ure van afrigting, en ook aan ons skeidsregters vir hul toewyding.

“It would be extremely difficult for me to choose between singing Elvis Presley songs and scoring a century for England, but I think I would choose a century for England!”

It is my sincere wish that the interschools matches will be played in the true spirit of sportsmanship, where everybody will produce beautiful tunes of their own!

ANDRE DE VILLIERSDie lewe gaan daaroor om geleenthede aan te gryp. Interskole is ook ‘n geleentheid, gryp dit met albei hande aan en maak die beste daarvan!

ELMAR VENTERWat ‘n wonderlike geleentheid om deel te vorm van die eerste dag/aand Interskole-krieket wedstryd tussen lewenslange vriende, maats en net so eenmaal ‘n jaar aardsvyande.

Baie sterkte aan albei spanne vir die wedstryd en kom ons koester hierdie tradisie vir die volgende generasie.

SCHALK BURGER (SNR)Die beste eerste span, is nie altyd noodwendig die span met die beste spelers of

meeste geluk wat Interskole wen nie maar, die span wie se individuele spelers “die wen” die meeste wil hê, en daarom alles in hulle vermoë doen om tot met die laaste bal, hierdie uitslag te bereik.

Daarom is BMT (big match temperament) so belangrik en dat die klein dingetjies jou nie afsit nie. “The desire to win must always be bigger than the fear of losing!”

JEAN BREDENKAMPAs ek terug dink dan dink ek outomaties aan die kere wat ons goed gedoen het. ‘n 50-tal, ‘n wen waar julle as span voor die wedstryd nie ‘n kans gegee was nie.

Maar die geleentheid wat uistaan vir my was matriek- interskole 2011... Ons het die lood gewen en eerste gekolf. Daar is gewoontlik nooit baie mense wat kom kyk nie behalwe maar jou ouers en een of twee vriende. na die derde bal geboul was, het omtrent 200 boishaaiers met

OLD BOYS ONTHOU AWSUM het by ’n paar old boys gaan kuier om oor die ou dae te praat. En onder andere te vra : “Wat is jou beste herinnering aan Interskole?”

LOUIS KOENInterskole 1985 ... Sjoe, dit is baie lank terug.

Die opbou na die wedstryd was vir my ‘n hoogtepunt ... Elke speler besef sy rol in die span en moet homself geestelik daarvoor voorberei. Die wakkerlê-aand voor die wedstryd, die butterflies ens. Dít was alles deel van interskole. Die intense emosies gedurende die wedstryd – alles net hoogtepunte! Ek dink elke speler droom dat hy sy span se wedtrydwenner wil wees, en natuurlik kan dit wees dat dit ‘n 100 tal, of 4 paaltjies, ‘n briljante vangskoot of run-out gaan wees. Dit is wat krieket so ‘n great game maak.

JUSTIN ONTONGEk wil graag van hierdie geleentheid gebruik maak om Paarl Gim se eerste krieketspan alle voorspoed en sterkte toe wens vir hulle interskole wedstryd teen HJS.

Die span moet weet dat krieket ‘n baie emosionele spel is en op so ‘n groot dag, is die span wat sy emosies in

swembaadjies en musiek en ‘n groot gees van die parkeerarea af gekom, om langs die veld te sit om vir ons te kyk.

Dit was so lekker om al daai ondersteuning vir ons te gesien het. Ons motivering was so hoog en ons kon nie daardie wedstryd verloor nie – ons het ook nie, nie eers naby nie.

Daai hele groep mense was tot die laaste bal daar. Ek het daardie dag gevoel soos ‘n trotse Boishaaier wat sy skool kon verteenwoordig en deel was van een van die beste instansie in die land.

Dit was so lekker om te weet hulle staan bankvas agter jou.

DAWID MALANMy fondest memory of interschools cricket is when I was playing for the first team in St 9.

It was the first time we played at Boland Park, and in such a large stadium. It was and awesome experience to.

The highlight of the day was that we also won that game.

SHOULDER INJURIES The first type is an “overuse” injury of the shoulder, associated with throwing, typically referred to as “thrower's shoulder”. The second type refers to acute, traumatic injuries, especially when players fall on a shoulder while fielding.

Thrower's shoulder is a chronic shoulder pain that gradually worsens when the player throws the ball, and, at a later stage, even when the player is bowling. There are a number of potential causes: poor throwing technique, shoulder muscle imbalance, previous injury, shoulder instability, too much or too little practice, and poor posture.

Thrower's shoulder involves injury to the tendons of the rotator cuff (the muscles around the shoulder joint), and may include weakness around the scapula (shoulder blade). There may be associated bursitis (inflammation of the joint sac) within the shoulder.

One specific mechanism for the development of thrower’s shoulder is the stretching of the anterior ligaments as a result of continuous throwing, which may lead to anterior instability. It may also involve posterior capsular tightness, leading to secondary damage: “SLAP” lesions and even partial tears of the rotator cuff tendons may occur.

Management of this injury includes appropriate diagnosis and identification of all the potential causes of the shoulder pain. Pain management and rehabilitation are the two mainstays of treatment for this condition.

Rehabilitation is focused on both stability and strength around the shoulder joint. It is essential that there is a balance of strength and stability

around the shoulder and surrounding joints. Rehabilitation and correction of the cricketer's throwing technique is important to prevent the recurrence of injury.

In cases where structural damage has occurred, the appropriate management would be referral to a shoulder specialist for possible surgical repair.

Injuries caused by overuse of the acromion-clavicular joint ( ACJ ) also occur in these players, due to repeated overhead movements. Initial physiotherapy often cures the problem, but in certain instances surgical management might be required.

Traumatic injury to the shoulder classically occurs when a fielder dives for the ball and lands hard on an outstretched arm. The injury could include damage in the form of tears to the tendons, and/or cartilage, in and around the shoulder, and, in isolated cases, dislocation of the shoulder may occur. Pain caused by this kind of injury usually limits participation in the game.

Management includes appropriate diagnosis, which, in some cases, will require referral to an orthopaedic surgeon. If the injury is significant, surgery may be necessary. It is imperative that the treating surgeon should be have the knowledge to manage shoulder injuries in overhead athletes, in order to ensure appropriate treatment, which will enable the player to return to the same level of play as soon as possible.

Following this, it is essential that the cricketer be appropriately rehabilitated to prevent weakness of selected muscles, which may in turn lead to future overuse injuries.

LOWER BACK INJURIESLower back injuries can take the form of stress fractures, and particularly adolescent fast bowlers are at high risk. Other areas that could be damaged include the disc, facet joint or surrounding soft tissue.

Spondylolisthesis, or the forward slipping of one vertebrae over another, affects younger cricketers more than older players. A specialist must be involved, as many fast bowlers have stress reactions in their spine as an adaptation to the bowling action, yet........ they are pain free!

Lower back pain is not a problem exclusive to the fast bowlers and is equally devastating when it happens to batsmen or wicketkeepers.

There are many potential causes of these injuries. Poor bowling technique (called a mixed-action technique), overbowling and relative youth are the common culprits. Other possible causes include poor physical preparation, the impact forces associated with the delivery stride, inadequate footwear, poor/hard/low shock absorption surfaces and previous injury.

Early detection and diagnosis are very important. Following this, treatment includes physiotherapy for pain and rehabilitation, which is undertaken by a physiotherapist and biokineticist.

In rare instances the injury may not respond to conservative management and require surgical intervention – usually as a last resort.

The focus of the rehabilitation is twofold. Firstly, it is essential to retrain the core muscles responsible for spinal stability. Secondly, and equally important, is strengthening the entire trunk, upper and lower body, in order to

The rehabilitation of these core stability muscles has to go hand in hand with bowling correction. Bowling correction on its own, however, is not enough. It has been shown that high intensity core stability activation/rehabilitation results in changes in positive changes to a player’s action.
