Introduction to MathMagic

MathType™  Application developed by Design Science, #1 market share in

low/med-end word processors market since its debut in 80’s.   Similar interface with MathMagic. Targeted for word processor

quality. Insufficient quality & feature for heavy users and highend Desktop publishing.

No Quark XTensions/InDesign plugins available. Inconvenient switching between QXP/InDesign and MathType if dealing with many equations. Time consuming task for re-editing. Many unexpected EPS errors.

Free Equation Editor, limited version of MathType, was bundled with a few word processors like MSWord & AppleWorks.

Retail: $97.00. Academic version: $57.00 (No free upgrade)   MathMagic reads MathType equations (MathType 5.0 or newer)    30 day trial is available from www.dessci.com

Introduction to MathMagic

InMath  Developed by a 3rd party SW developer, sold by I.T.I.P.

www.itip-gmbh.eu    InDesign/InCopy CS3, CS4; No CS5 support.   No QuarkXPress support.   Should purchase separately for CS3 and CS4.   Equations and symbols are very limited   No import or export to other equation formats: MathML/TeX

support/EPS, …   Many compatibility issues: If InMath plug-in is not installed,

InDesign documents can not be opened/printed correctly    495.00 EURO

LiveMath™ Maker & MathEQ™ Expression Editor   Bought Expressionist from Waterloo Mape in 1999, By Theorist

Interactive, LLC.    Many platform including Mac & Win versions. Many localized versions.    LiveMath is mainly for live calculation and graphing. Not suitable for

high quality Equation Typesetting.    Equation quality is lower than MathType™. User Interface is less

intuitive.    www.livemath.com    LiveMath: $299.00 MathEQ: $199.00

Other   Adobe FrameMaker Equation editor (Discountined)

•  Integrated with FrameMaker, old UI & limitation for custom settings

Quark XTensions: PowerMath, Xmath, Mathable: Limited compatibility, Discontinued.

MathMagic Server Edition   Work with Linux/Windows based Web servers   Live generation/conversion among equation formats

MathMagic for iPad and iOS devices  Late 2011

Introduction to MathMagic

Can MathMagic import equations created with MS Word Equation Editor or MathType?    Yes, in many ways. Just copy and Paste MathType equaitons into MathMagic. Or, Copy

equation as TeX or MathML by changing clipboard format in Preference menu from MathType, and Paste it into MathMagic window..

MathMagic also supports Batch conversion of MS Word documents(.doc, .docx) to extract equations.

Do the Service bureaus need to buy MathMagic or its fonts for printing?   If the service bureaus just need to view and print QXP or InDesign documents with

MathMagic equations, MathMagic license is not required. Other documents containing MathMagic equations in PDF, PICT, WMF, JPEG, or EPS formats, can be printed without MathMagic.

If onsite equation editing is required, they need to purchase a MathMagic license.    Is MathMagic Mac file compatible with MathMagic Windows version, or vice a

versa ?   Yes. MathMagic file(.mmf) can be shared on both Mac & Windows. But there might be

some layout mis-match over platforms so the preflight checking is strongly recommended before any critical printing. Equation EPS files should be cross-platform if the same fonts are installed on both.
