Intermodal and distribution centers are crucial to achievingthis goal. Expanding Port Botany will also provide many economic benefits to Sydney, the argest city of Australia.

Given its proximity to the dominant Sydney market, access to a dedicated freight rail line, good road links and deep waterchannel, expanding Port Botany will be the most efficient andenvironmentally favourable means of handling future containertrade. It also means that the local economic benefits broughtabout by the port -estimated to be almost 30,000 jobs in 2025 -are protected; and the benefits to New South Wales (NSW)province, Australia- AUD 400 million in household income in2025 - are consolidated.

Being one of Sydney’s biggest infrastructure projects, NSWGovernment’s $1 billion Port Botany expansion project’scontract was signed by H.E. Carruet represented Belgiancompany Jan De Nul and Ken Reynolds of Australian companyBaulderstone Hornibrook.

With its direct access to the region’s largest consumer market -Sydney, Port Botany remiains crucial for container trade. Forecastsshow that the demand for this trade in containers is expected totreble over the next 20 years. However, Sydney currently does nothave enough port capacity to handle this forecast level of containertrade and shifting these containers to another port outside Sydneywould not solve this problem. Since around 85% of these containerswould then need to be transported back into Sydney by road and/orrail, which will considerably increase the cost of the goods beingtransported; and will create significantly more environmentalimpacts and climate change inducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As Sydney continues to grow, so does the demand

for imports and exports and the associated

distribution and delivery of the goods. The goal has

been to move more goods by rail and manage the

growth in freight trucks on the roads.

For this reason, Sydney Ports Corporation (Sydney Ports)proposed to expand the terminal facilities at Port Botany tohandle increases in container trade for at least the next 20years. The Port Botany Expansion Project comprises a newcontainer terminal on the north-eastern shore of Botany Bay,about 12 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD (city). The $1billion development of Port Botany is the biggest expansion ofthe port since it was first constructed and will cater for tradegrowth forecast to double over the next 20 years.

The new terminal will be located between the existing port andthe parallel runway at Sydney airport, extending approximately550 metres west and 1,300 metres north of the existing TollHoldings (Patrick Stevedores) container terminal. It covers anarea of approximately 60 hectares with five new shipping berthscapable of handling large container ships which together withexisting facilities should meet Sydney’s container handlingrequirements for the next 20 years.

Project Summary

The key components of the project are:

• a new container terminal with approximately 63 ha of landextending approximately 550 m west and 1,300m north of the existing Patrick Stevedorescontainer terminal;

• approximately 1,850 m of additional wharf facewith five new shipping berths;

• dredging to create channels and berth boxesand provide approximately 7.5 million cubicmetres of fill material;

• dedicated road and rail access; and

• reclamation adjacent to Foreshore Road tocreate a tug and support vessel berth facility.

ENFIELD INTERMODAL

It was September 2007, when Sydney Portsreceived approval from the NSW Governmentto develop an Intermodal Logistics Centre(ILC) at its 60 hectare site at Enfield.

With the rapid increase in trade through Port Botany, the $150million ILC will play an important role in the logistics chain,moving containers closer to their final destination by rail - anoperationally efficient and environmentally sustainable way. The centre will include an intermodal terminal; railway lines,sidings and associated works; warehousing; container storageareas; a light industrial-commercial area; and a community andecological area. These facilities will provide the capability tohandle up to 300,000 teus annually.

Sydney Ports has focused on minimising the impacts of trucks,trains, noise and the visual effects from the Enfield development.The design of the facility is sensitive to the needs of theresidential neighbours with main operational areas buffered bybuildings and landscaping. The project is expected to bedelivered in partnership with the private sector, as an openaccess terminal and operational by 2010.

NEW OPERATIONS CENTRE AND PILOT CUTTER JETTY

A new Port Operations Centre is going to be developed atBrotherson Dock, Port Botany. Sydney Ports has receivedconditional local council approval for its development, which willshowcase an environmentally sustainable design based on SydneyPorts’ Green Port Guidelines. It is planned to comply with four anda half star Australian Building Greenhouse Rating (ABGR).

The new four storey centre will cater for future operationalrequirements with the majority of shipping operations to be at PortBotany. The existing building will also be refurbished and

ENFIELD KOMB‹NE TAfiIMACILIK MERKEZ‹

Bu tesisler y›l-da 300,000 teu konteynerin elleçlenebilmesine imkan tan›yacak.

In addition to that, Sydney Ports has recently awarded a $1.8million contract for the construction of a new Pilot Cutter jetty atBrotherson Dock. The new jetty will provide an additional twoberths for pilot boats to ensure pilot transport is available at alltimes. The design consists of a 35 metre long, 3 metre wide jettydesigned for two pilot boats and two smaller vessels. Theconstruction of the jetty is expected to be completed by mid-2008.

TRADE HIGHLIGHTS

Total container trade through Sydney’s ports for the first fivemonths of 2007/08 was 747,446 teus, an increase of 8.7 percent compared to the same period last year. Total trade for thisperiod was 12.5 million mass tonnes, an increase of 9.5 per cent.Container trade in October was the highest ever in a month forthe ports with over 158,000 teus traded, an increase of 10.5 percent on October 2006.

Sydney Ports Corporation CEO Grant Gilfillan explained that in thesix months from July to December 2007 container trade throughPort Botany increased by a record 8.5 percent when compared to thesame period in 2006, with approximately 906,600 teus (twenty-footequivalent units) handled at the port. “Sydney continues to be one ofAustralia’s leading container import ports with imports currently upto over 469,000 teus, an increase of 9.2 per cent on last year’sfigures”, said Mr Gilfillan. Container exports increased by 7.8 percent in the July to December period, totalling over 437,300 teus.Total trade through Sydney’s ports was 14.9 million mass tonnes,6.1 per cent higher than the corresponding period last year. MrGilfillan stated that “Cargoes other than containers have also beenperforming well, including imports of oil, up 5.0 per cent on last yearand imports of bulk liquids and gas products, up 15.3 per cent.”

The Rhapsody of the Seas visited Sydney on October 15 markingthe beginning of the biggest and most spectacular cruise season inSydney. 102 visits scheduled for the year. A total of 47international vessel visits are scheduled as well as 55 home-basedvessels marking an increase of 16 per cent over last year’s visits.

The maiden visit of the newly launched Queen Victoria was thehighlight of the season arriving on 23 February 2008. The dayalso coincided with the final voyage of the Queen Elizabeth 2before she retires to be a floating resort in Dubai. Other maidenvisits include the Oceanic Cruises Nautica and Amadea ofPheonix Tours. The arrival of Australia’s first SuperLiner thePacific Dawn provided a momentous occasion for this season.With a 2,050 passenger capacity the vessel replaced the PacificSun. The Sun Princess also replaced the Pacific Princess. Theseason will also include multiple visits by Sapphire Princess andthe Statendam. The season ends on 16 April 2008 with thedeparture of the Topaz from the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
