The wide garden of House Bergsma needs to be reorganized and reshaped, so that the existing courtyard, parking area, tennis courts, stables, pool and pond are linked and the whole context reveals an homogeneous identity.

Geometric shapes break into the wildness, in order to appropriate and arrange the landscape. One only concept is presented through different strategies, providing a variety of atmospheres.

A platform system starts in the pool-playground area, follows the topography down the slope, towards the tennis courts and extends until the main stable and entrance, creating an organic pond to water the garden and horses. The terraces in the steepest area allow a grandstand for the courts. The fruits trees and greenery along the existing pond, adopt formalized shapes. The courtyard is envisioned as a parcelled planted space that changes with seasons. The parking area is formed by a grid pavement of gravel and grass.

YOUNG HABITATTowards a New Ecosystem.

7

The 13th-century Old Town of Plentzia, defined by its compact blocks and narrow, steep streets, is suffering a physical and functional degradation nowadays, which is causing the loss of local identity.

In order to avoid degeneration and social exclusion in this area, foster tourist capabilites of a coastal summer village and provide affordable housing for young generations, a mixed use complex is envisioned. The new community includes a cultural and

entertainment centre, a youth residence and collective housing. In this way, interaction between local population, new inhabitants and visitors is promoted.

The ambition of the project is to explore the limits between built-void, outside-inside, individual-collective, public-private. These dichotomies are expressed by non-fixed perimeters: glazed volumes, porous façades, movable enclosures, outside common spaces, undefined functions, appropriable spaces, ...

Page 8: IRATI LASA AMO | PORTFOLIO + CV

8

The primary volume follows the topography and perimeter of the plot, achieving the best orientation and views, but also creating an inner square. To favour integration into the urban morphology, the building is shaped by the surrounding houses. A new axis crossing the plot, devides the volume and provides access and communication. Thereby, three public builidings and four acommodation blocks are defined. All functions are connected creating a new cosmos.

Communication elements are conceived as 'voids': a glass Gallery in the public building; and a System of outside Walkways & Staircases in the accommodation area. These strategies abet encounter and communal living.

Rehabilitation. Buildings with architectural or historical value are preserved or renovated, so that the new inhabitants will feel linked to the past of the plot. Three old traditional houses are rehabilited.

The Gallery: a 'Covered Street'. The glazed volume acts as an extension of the public space, where a variety of flows collide. This interstice provides access and appropriable space to all functions.

Auditorium: Breaking the 'closed box'. The volume opens to the outside, interacting with the street. Themed terraces, disassembling grandstand and sliding enclosures offer different layouts, providing maximum flexibility.

A home designed as a Community. Accomodation buildings are based on the idea of minimazing the private surface, to achieve a greater common space. The main goal is to foster communal living. A minimum living unit - 4,5x4,5m - is proposed. This layout enables a non-hierarchical organization of the shared space, erasing corridors. The collective space has no defined function, so that users are free to appropriate the space as they like, encouraging initiative and cooperation.

Structure. Steal structure system allows open plan and free spaces. The use of castellated beams gives an industrial aesthetic to the building, but also enables installing lights and piping, avoiding faux ceilings.

Construction. In contrast with the industrialized structure, traditional and fair materials are used in the

façades, such as, bricks and ceramic prefabricated panels. Main elements identified in the façades of the old town are reinterpreted, vertical rhythm, framing, horizontal lines, porosity.Double-skin façades allow solar shading and visual connection with the outside.

The trapezoidal shaped plot, surrounded by narrow streets and five-level-buildings, is limited by an existing party wall and a small public space. It is located close to a big square in the old city centre of Coimbra.

The aim of the project is to promote social tissues and to develope activities for the inabitants. The building is envisioned as an articulating element that will encourage integration of architecture in the city.

The main challenge is how to bring light into the interior spaces. The volume is shaped by the surrounding houses and broken in two by a crack. The void draws the path of the sun allowing light through the builing, during the main hours. It also provides access, vertical communication and ventilation. The opaque envelope accentuates the idea of the crack, but also creates an exciting inner world isolated from the outside, with the exception of the two only openings.

Page 16: IRATI LASA AMO | PORTFOLIO + CV

16

Industrialized architecture. Construction time, energy efficiency, material and labour streamlining were key to choose the construction system. Furthermore, the lifecycle of the building, from the fabrication of the materials until the footprint, has been defined. The structure is built with prefabricated wooden panels and the façade is made of cork panels, since Portugal is one of the most important exporting countries of this raw material. The building is designed to be constructed in 6 days.

19

The coastline of the turisctic summer village of Portorož is bordered by a ring of tourist services and facilities, creating a boundary between the seaside and the inland. Moreover, the beach is parcelled into private lots and a pedestrian way creates a secondary ring, separating the sea from the sandy area.

The organic shapes of the proposal, like a hand coming out of the sea, break the rings and connect the separated areas, either physically or visually.

A radial system enables to organize the cost from the existing buildings and references, and open or close paths or views to the inland or the shore.

The inner space is created by the elevation of the public space. Besides, the waved surface enables access from roof to roof, allowing a promenade above the ground level. To promote function diversity, turistic shops are placed among public facilities and local businesses.

Located in the Biosphere of Urdaibai, Isla is a small neighbourhood surrounded by marshlands, with low population and the remainings of a rural past. Most fields fell into disuse since farming or ranching are no longer a source of income. Therefore, Isla has suffered a loss of identity, becoming a 'dormitory town'.A centre for the study of birds and regeneration of vegetation is proposed as catalyst. In order to promote Geotourism, experts will live together with 'active tourists'. To ensure inhabitant's participation,

residents must make proper use of their farmlands; otherwise, unused lands will be invaded. The Interpretation Centre consist on two glass boxes erected between the stone walls of an Old Farmhouse. Prefabricated units disposed randomly take the function of temporary housing and workshops. A network covered by a plastic mesh leads people along different spaces and allows birds fly freely. Vegetation will grow around the labyrinth, netting and wrapping the mesh. The building will be swallowed by nature.

WALKING ON THE WALLHow to conquer the vertical surface?

Page 23: IRATI LASA AMO | PORTFOLIO + CV

23

The project takes place in the old quarry of Ereño. On this outstanding artificial landscape the vertical surface -13.293 m2 - is greater than the horizontal one - 6.289m2 -. The key challenge is how to make the vertical surface usable and for which activity.

Two kind of walls have been identified: the stepped wall and the flat wall along the canyon. Therefore, two systems are proposed to appropriate both type of walls.

The main program includes temporary housing linked to any special event: cinema, fashion or music festival.

The skin. The proposal consist on light platforms and staircases held by steal grids that are fixed to the wall. Two layers cover the structure, to provide shelter. The capsules. Prefabricated light units are piled up to form the structure. Each unit - 3,7x3,7 m - has a movable staircase and two folding panels, in order to allow communication.

The plastic generates place and landscape. Places created by the tectonic and tactile membrane disposition that prepare inhabitable spaces climatically. Landscapes created by the construction of modulated skeletons and surrounding skins to delimit a crystalline topography, a sea of plastic.

The project approaches the climatic comfort of a light skin, the incorporation ready-made objects to low cost housing, the visual intervention on a

slope, ephemeral constructions and landscaping operations.Architecture finds in the greenhouse a strategy to experience sustainable construction and infinite space possibilities.

In order to guarantee maximum profitability, lots of farmland are replaced by temporary tourist housing and services in summer. The grid suffers a distortion and embraces the remainings of the old factory and the railway.

To illustrate the aim of this exercise it is pointed out the bus stop project for Kultur Verein Krumbach of de Vylder Vinck Taillieu. The studio has been fascinated for years by a drawing of Sol Lewitt - a specific viewpoint on a destroyed drawing - without any precise outcome. The bus stop project was the first time where the drawing played a significant role. It became a roof; a mountain; a shelter or even a chapel. The meaning of small - simple, daily, unexpected, not related - references is the topic of this workshop.

The exercise began by choosing one prepared drawing and photo, a context to be prepared and an unprepared program. Starting from an A6 format to arrive to an A1 image and model, a cutout framed image was presented, so that it may become reference for a future project.

The proposal explores light and shadows, full and voids in Siza's building. The first drawings turned into the project itself, creating an endless metallic grid.
