EDITOR’S NOTEExistential psychologist Rollo Reece May once said: “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” In this issue, our Special Feature explores how to be a skilful communicator with our loved ones, with useful tips such as the five rules of communication, the practice of active-listening, and how to give compliments.

One of the factors affecting communication is our ability to hear. In Singapore, the prevalence of hearing loss increases with age. Health is Wealth explains the different types of hearing loss and offers library titles to power-up your knowledge on how to protect and manage your hearing. Last but not least, indulge your wanderlust with the travelling tips in Simplicity Is Good for a truly fuss-free holiday experience.

The Time of Your Life Reading Kit for the 50plus is now three years old. When first launched in 2013, it took the form of daily book recommendations in our bimonthly reusable calendars. From mid-2014, we revamped the kit into the subscription-based reading kit, comprising a publication, together with mind-stimulating manipulatives, mailed directly to your home. Throughout this time, the aim of the reading kit has always been to provide you with good information, title recommendations for your reading pleasure and mental stimulation. We hope you have enjoyed the reading kits.

Your subscription is ending with this issue. The Time of Your Life Reading Kit will cease production from April 2016. However, we will continue with the publication of the Time of Your Life magazine. The new issue of the magazine will be available at all public libraries come June 2016. We look forward to your support. Do come to the library to join our programmes, borrow some good reads, and remember to pick up the magazine on your way out. May you continue to enjoy the Time Of Your Life!

Communicating wellwith your loved ones

Good communication is important in nurturing and maintaining healthy relationships within the family. This is especially so in the face of changes such as new additions to the family and changes in familial roles. Perhaps you are now a grandparent for the first time, or you find yourself struggling to communicate with your teenage grandchild. Maybe you wonder how you can provide support to your adult child who is struggling without undermining him or her.

5 Rules of Effective CommunicationAccording to the book Say This, Not That, there are 5 rules to effective communication:1. Knowing what you want to accomplish by asking that question or making

that comment. Before you speak to a child, spend a few seconds to decide if you are trying to convey a message to him or just airing your frustration.

The book Difficult Conversations talks about not focusing on “venting”, which only creates negative feelings in the relationship. Instead, you can tell the person how you feel and clarify with them their intentions so as not to make the wrong assumptions. Do they really mean what you think they said?

2. Saying what you need and nothing more – so as to avoid jeopardizing what you truly meant.

3. Don’t ask false or rhetorical questions just to vent your anxiety and resentment.

4. Do not use blame as it is made up of four toxic behaviours – “criticism, accusation, punishment, and humiliation”.

5. Know when to stop before the discussion becomes too heated.

3

Page 4: ISSUE 7 · It occurs due to changes in the inner ear, auditory nerve, middle ear, or outer ear; and a person may find it difficult to tolerate loud sounds or hear what others are

Demonstrate Good Listening SkillsCommunication is not just about conveying your thoughts but also being a good listener. The authors of Difficult Conversations share 3 main tips: a) learn to ask open-ended questions and to ask for more concrete information to understand where the speaker is coming from; b) paraphrase what you have just heard so as to check your understanding and show the speaker that you have heard him; c) acknowledge his feelings by showing that you are trying to understand the emotional state he is in – i.e. show empathy.

Compliment!Lastly, be generous with compliments. The compliments given should be meaningful to the person so that it will go a long way to acknowledge the person’s efforts, boost the person’s morale, and improve your relationship. The book The Art of the Compliment talks about how compliments need not be about something big but can be about simple everyday things. For example, “I learnt so much from you.” Sometimes, just listening attentively to the speaker can be a compliment too.

Praising your grandchild goes a long way in building the child’s self-esteem. Being praised by an adult often gives the child a sense of validation and self-worth. This is especially so if the compliment is about their effort rather than their abilities.

Can you hear me?

In general, there are two types of hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves cannot be transmitted properly to the inner ear. This may be caused by earwax build-up, fluid, or a punctured eardrum. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs as a result of damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve.

Hearing loss could range from a mild loss where one misses certain high-pitched sounds to a total loss of hearing. It can be hereditary, caused by acute and prolonged exposure to loud noise, or arise from infections, diseases, trauma, certain medications, and old age. Age-related hearing loss is one of the most common problems affecting older adults and the elderly. Among American adults, there is a strong positive correlation between age and reported hearing loss1. In Singapore, one in every five Singaporeans in their 50s has hearing loss. The occurrence rate is two in every five people in their 60s2. This prevalence is projected to increase with Singapore’s ageing population.

“What? I can’t hear you!”, “What did you say?”, “Can you repeat it louder?” Hearing difficulties pose a burden to everyday conversations and daily routines, which may gradually result in social isolation. Helen Keller said, “Blindness separates people from things, deafness separates people from people.” Losing the ability to hear can have a significant impact on your well-being and quality of life, as well as the lives of your family and friends. Hence, when faced with hearing loss, you should not deny or hide this impairment, which in turn will deprive you of the necessary support and knowledge you’ll need to cope with it.

One common form of hearing loss associated with ageing is known as presbycusis. It occurs due to changes in the inner ear, auditory nerve, middle ear, or outer ear; and a person may find it difficult to tolerate loud sounds or hear what others are saying. Another hearing disorder common among older people is known as tinnitus, a symptom described as a ringing, roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing sound in the ears.

Hearing loss can occur in various forms and spectrums. Awareness of this condition and early detection, therefore, are important. Consult an audiologist or ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor to seek professional advice and treatment if you think you may have any age-related hearing problems3.

Travel Safely!Going on a Vacation?Everyone looks forward to having an enjoyable holiday and getting a break from their routine. If you think vacations are meant for relaxing, think twice. In order to enjoy your trip, you have to plan well and have proper safety measures in place. If not, it will ruin your holiday.

Travel advisory and emergency Situations Always check if there is any travel advisory for your intended travel destination on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)’s website. This will help you in planning your trip and deciding on your destination.

To seek consular assistance during an emergency, you must contact the overseas mission’s office. Therefore it is important to note down the contact information of the overseas mission nearest to you, and also register online with MFA at https://eregister.mfa.gov.sg/. This will enable you to receive necessary consular assistance during an emergency, or during crises like natural disasters, civil unrest or terror attacks.

SiMpLiCiTY iS GOOD

Travel insuranceUnexpected things can happen anytime. To protect yourself from unforeseen emergencies, you should purchase travel insurance. Your vacation can turn ugly if your insurance plan has limitations. Ensure that it covers emergencies like accidents, medical conditions, flight delays, and loss of valuables or luggage.

Page 8: ISSUE 7 · It occurs due to changes in the inner ear, auditory nerve, middle ear, or outer ear; and a person may find it difficult to tolerate loud sounds or hear what others are

packing your LuggageTo identify your bag easily, place a tag or tie a bright-coloured ribbon on it. Place a sealed envelope in your bag with copies of your travel itinerary, passport and hotel accommodation. Give copies of the aforementioned to a friend or family member.

Always carry items such as glasses, medicines, and other important things with you, and do not pack them in your check-in baggage.

Money & Valuable itemsAvoid being an easy target by not carrying valuables, large sums of cash, or branded items when you travel. Carry a dummy wallet with just enough money, keep the rest in a waist band, and hide it in a safe place.

Taking these safety measures will ensure that you have a pleasant andsafe vacation.

Running through it all is the enigmatic Station Eleven comic, serving as a microcosm of life after the pandemic and a source of marvel and wonder for its readers.

An immensely moving story, Station Eleven is a testimony to the power of art, relationships and the endurance of the human spirit.

A Little Life tells the stories of four friends who meet in university and their various dreams and hopes, as well as struggles and insecurities. Komunikasi
