Malawian Scouts Reach out to Visually Impaired Children in Ekwendeni

9 visually impaired children (25 boys and 24 girls) from the CCAP School for the Blind situated at Ekwendeni in the north-ern Malawi got introduced to Scouting during a visit by some Rover Scouts.

The school which cares for children living with visual impair-ment as well as albinism, HIV/AIDS among other disabilities is supported by only two teachers. Having noticed the challenges faced by these teachers, including the high teacher-learners ratio and managing children with multiple disabilities, the Rov-er Scouts decided to introduce Scouting as a way of helping to bridge the gap.

Apart from inducting the children into the movement they also committed to mobilizing support for the school to help meet the children’s basis needs of food, clothing, soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads for girls.

Excited about the prospect of getting exposed to new knowl-edge and experiences the children expressed their interest and willingness to become Scouts.

Scouts Saving Lives Through BloodDonation in Botswana

As part of their reaching out activities, the Scout Group Les Fourmis Laborieuses in Cameroon initiated a fun, educational and humanitarian outing to the Bafoussam Central Prison. The prison which hosts 32 juvenile offenders was pleased to open its gates to the 33 Scouts who brought great cheer and moti-vation to the young offenders. These young offenders are most often abandoned by society and rarely visited or given the chance for interactions with other young people leading to them sinking into despair. The situation deprives them of the opportunity enjoy being young and do a lot of the things young people would do at their age. Realizing so, the Scout Group chose this activity as a way of helping them regain their self-esteem.

Scouts Spreading Love and Good Cheer to Juvenile Offenders in Cameroon

In response to a national call to citizens by the Botswanan Ministry of Health to help replenish the national blood bank, the Botswana Scout Association last year mobilised 53 Scouts from around the capital Gaborone. The Scouts marched into the country’s largest national referral hospital, Princess Marina Hospital to donate blood. They were among other citizens who heeded to the Ministry of Health’s call to support patient’s improve response to treatment hence increasing their chances of healing.

“This activity taught us that it is vital for us to assist our fellow citizens whenever we are called upon. Community service al-ways brings great recognition to Scouting and the nation, so as Scouts we ought to be ready to help,” said one of the Scouts, Bakang Kenosi.

Through this selfless gesture the Scouts were able to save lives of their fellow countrymen and women, many of whom they would even never get to meet. It also provided them an opportunity to be identified by other citizens as people of good deeds. The gesture caught the attention of the media who invited Scout representatives to Radio Talk Shows to highlight the work of Scouting in the country, further arousing the inter-est of other young people in the movement.

Since 2018, the Scouts in partnership with the Ministry of Health have continued to conduct an annual Blood Donation Drive on the 27th of February to help save more lives.

WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS

The UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office and WOSM Africa have entered into a collaboration focused on pro-moting innovative, data-driven adolescent and youth engage-ment on climate change awareness and mitigation, promotion of adolescent nutrition and other common programme priori-ties.

The partnership which builds upon previous engagement on the U-Report platform aims to leverage UNICEF’s innovative platforms for learning, information sharing and engaging adolescents by working Scouts in 21 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. More information will be shared in due course.

The Scouts were welcomed and spent a day with the young offenders, engaging them in prayers, games and other learning activities. They played team games in the form of challenges such as arm wrestling, tug-of-war, basketball (with blindfolded eyes), left-foot football and so on. This helped to create a unifying spirit among the Scouts and the minor detainees.

The educational activities were punctuated with inspirational talks on values such as discipline and respect for people and their property. A few of the young prisoners also had the op-portunity to share their stories which hinged a lot on following bad influence as the main cause of them spending time under confinement. Through this sharing the Scouts also got first-hand experience of how bad behaviour can directly or indirect-ly deprive them of their freedom. Towards the end of the day the Scouts and the young offend-ers exchanged gifts as a sign of new-found friendships. The gifts consisted of art drawings with messages inspired by the Scout Law and Promise. On their part, the young prisoners made kits from plastic waste such as rice wrapping bags and knitting thread. They also shared a meal and donated to the institution some foodstuffs to support the nutritional needs of the young offenders. To the Scouts, this was a very enriching experience that they committed to doing annually over the Easter period as a way of reaching out to young people living in difficult circumstances.

Africa Scout Day Action Week 2020 Launched to mark Africa Scout Day

On the 22nd February 2020, Kenya Scout Association (KSA) invited Scouts to celebrate the Founders Day in Nyeri where Baden Powell is buried. Scout units came from all over the country as well as Scout representatives from the Boy Scouts of America, Denmark, Burundi and Madagascar. The local administration and religious authorities were also present to mark the day.

The day started with a visit to the Baden Powell’s House at Outspan Hotel with some historical explanations and signing of the visitors’ book. Thereafter Scouts, led by a brass band, went on a procession from Paxtu to go to the BP grave site where guests laid wreaths on the grave followed by a prayer and speeches.

The Governor of Nyeri County, H.E Mutahi Kahiga said that as a county they want to make Nyeri a place where all Scouts can call home. He invited KSA to revive discussions on how to get a good camping site in Nyeri where Scouts can camp and visit Paxtu at their convenience. He committed to supporting the Association’s drive to ensured that there is a trained Scout Leader in every school in the county.

Young Scouts were actively involved in the ceremony with ren-ditions of song and dance – showcasing their talents and skills.

Blending the Indomitable African Spirit and Scout Values for a Better AfricaIt has been 25 years since the African Union set aside the 13th of March as Africa Scout Day. Since then, we as a continent have experienced many changes, challenges and successes in our journey. One thing that is constant, however, is that Scout-ing has been an ally to youth education and progress at the community and regional level. Africa Scout Day is an opportu-nity for all Scouts and Scouters to celebrate our successes, re-flect on where we have been and where we are going, and how we can work together internally in our Movement and expand our impact in the communities we live in.

The African Spirit is an indomitable one – in our continent we find appetite for life, largeness of spirit and a culture blessed with a strong passion for community. We are the birthplace of humanity and with our abundant resources, both human and material along with our amazing young people, we can be the birthplace of the future. Scouting has a demonstrated ability to bring together peo-ple from different cultures and backgrounds and to lead that team to making a better world. We have the ability to use our shared values and sense of brother- and sisterhood to bridge our differences so that we can work to realise the best that each and every one of us brings to the table. We have the tools and the skills to make our diversity and difference a source of massive strength and energy. We just need to take the first step and keep walking as the people join us in our journey to a better world.

Following the cancellation of the Africa Scout Day celebrations initially scheduled for 13-16 March 2020 in Uganda, the Africa Scout Region launched a week-long mobilization campaign dubbed “Africa Scout Day Action Week”. The campaign which ran from Monday, 9th March 2020 to Sunday, 15th March 2020 under the theme “Unravelling the Africa Spirit” was modelled around the Africa Scout Day celebrations marked annually on the 13th day of March. The sub themes include: the Spirit of Solidarity, the Spirit of Service and the Spirit of Community.

The ASD Action Week campaign was a platform for mobili-zation of Scouts, volunteers and partners towards strength-ening Scouting and increasing support for its work in the value-based non-formal education of young people in Africa and around the world. The campaign called upon NSOs and Scouts to implement and showcase community service actions that increase recognition of the contribution of Scouting to the development of young people and their communities across Africa.
