As Artistic Director of our little Music Festival at Sea I am personally delighted to welcome back so many friends whom I had the pleasure of getting to know on previous Music Cruises, and I look forward to greeting some new music-lovers who

will doubtless become part of the Music Cruise ‘family’ by the end of the week.

What can I say about our wonderful guest artists this year? Musicians of international status, who will be playing works spanning almost three centuries and including two legends of music making, Maxim Vengerov and Kiri Te Kanawa. We have many musical treats in store this week!

I will be with you throughout the week and I look forward to being able to talk with you about music and much more.

All of us at Travel for the Arts are delighted to see the 2012 ECO Music Cruise come to fruition, the 4th under our administration, carrying forward this fine marriage of world class music and relaxed

luxury cruising. Each year we enjoy welcoming back the “aficionados” and meeting and getting to know enthusiastic newcomers. Music lovers join us from every part of the world, bound together by the delight of seeing and hearing wonderful music-making in special and intimate surroundings.

Quin and Pauline have used their enormous wisdom, experience and contacts to great effect yet again to assemble a stellar roster of soloists with cleverly structured and contrasting repertoire chosen for each recital and concert.

Regular ECO cruise-goers will not need to be reminded of the immense contribution of Marianne and André each year. In addition to their effortless and stylish hosting - in many languages! - they have personally researched and planned all the excursions and shore concerts. Regulars will also note the refurbishments that have already been made to Msy Wind Spirit’s cabins, part of a major renovation programme of all 3 ships in the fleet which will be completed in the fall of 2012.

The English Chamber Orchestra is the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world, its discography containing 860 recordings of over 1,500 works by more than 400 composers.

The ECO has also performed in more countries than any other orchestra, and played with many of the world’s greatest musicians. The American radio network CPRN has selected ECO as one of the world’s greatest ‘living’ orchestras. The illustrious history of the orchestra features many major musical figures. Benjamin Britten was the orchestra’s first Patron and a significant musical influence. The ECO’s long relationship with Daniel Barenboim led to an acclaimed complete cycle of Mozart piano concertos as live performances and recordings, followed later by two further recordings of the complete cycle, with Murray Perahia and Mitsuko Uchida.

Recent highlights have included a celebration concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall with guest artists Maxim Vengerov (conductor and soloist), Kiri Te Kanawa and Behzod Abduraimov. Foreign tours over the last year have included the ECO’s debut in Qatar and several European tours, most notably Spain and Italy with Sir Colin Davis,

Finland, Bratislava, Bulgaria and Turkey. The Orchestra also continued its summer residency at Grange Park Opera, with 17 performances of Idomeneo and Madame Butterfly during May – July 2012. We look forward to a return visit to the Rostropovich Festival in Azerbaijan in December 2012, with Maxim Vengerov again in the dual role of conductor/soloist. Plans for 2013 and 2014 include return visits to the USA and the Far East as well as concerts across the UK and Europe.

CD recordings made by the ECO in 2012 include music spanning five centuries, from Vivaldi through Mozart, Elgar, Villa Lobos and Schulhoff to two concertos by David Heath, recently commissioned and premiered by the ECO.

The ECO is proud of its outreach programme, Close Encounters, which takes music into communities and schools around the UK and overseas. Further details of this and all ECO activities can be found at www.englishchamberorchestra.co.uk

You can also now become a fan of ECO on Facebook and Twitter (@ECOrchestra) in order to keep up to date with the Orchestra’s movements on tour in the UK and overseas.

Guest ArtistsWidely regarded as one of the world’s most dynamic artists, Maxim Vengerov has performed sold out concerts with the world’s most eminent orchestras in every major city in the world. Steeped in the celebrated Russian tradition of music making, Maxim enjoys international acclaim as a musician of the highest order, tireless in his search for new means of creative expression.

Having taken time off to study conducting, Maxim returned to the violin in 2011 and now divides his time equally between playing the violin, conducting and teaching. In 2012 he will perform as conductor and/or soloist with various orchestras including concerts in Munich, Paris, the Paleo Festival Geneva, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec Symphony Orchestras

as well as an Asian tour with recitals and Chamber music.

He joined the Menuhin Academy in Switzerland as Musical Advisor in 2011 and became Menuhin Professor of the Royal Academy in London in 2012.

As chairman of the prestigious Wienawski competition in Poznan, Maxim has auditioned over 200 musicians within the last year, travelling to 9 capitals of the world, selecting the finalists for the competition which took place in October last year.

In 1997, Maxim Vengerov became the first classical musician to be appointed Envoy for Music by UNICEF, which provided him with the unique opportunity to inspire children worldwide through music. As a UNICEF good will ambassador, he performed for underprivileged children in Uganda, Thailand and the Balkans, and helped raise funds for UNICEF assisted programs. Maxim Vengerov plays ex-Kreutzer Stradivari (1727).

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the world’s most loved sopranos, with a career that has encompassed appearances on the world’s greatest opera stages, as well as in countless concert halls around the world. Her recordings have brought her even wider recognition and plaudits, including 2 Grammy awards, in a career recognized by a lifetime achievement Award at the 2010 Classical Brit Awards and honoured by the Metropolitan Opera Guild.

Since her early days in her native New Zealand Dame Kiri has captured people’s hearts worldwide, notably singing at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, watched by 600 million. Many other televised events have brought her voice to the attention of millions.

An opera performer of the highest calibre, she began 2012 with engagements at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, as the Duchess of

Krakenthorp in La fille du Regiment, a role which she reprises in Vienna in 2013. Her 2010 performances in Der Rosenkavalier at Cologne Opera garnered international press attention for her impeccable interpretation in the role of Countess. As part of the BBC’s commitment to a year of Opera in 2010, Dame Kiri brought her considerable mentoring skills to the BBC “Kiri prize”, the prizewinner joining her in London’s Proms in the Park. A hour-long documentary hosted by Dame Kiri “What Makes a Great Soprano”, was broadcast on BBC TV, and has opened up the art of singing to a wider audience through her engaging television personality.

During 2012 Dame Kiri has already enthralled audiences in the USA, Spain, Czech Republic, Israel, Holland, Australia and New Zealand and has a packed calendar for more recitals and orchestral concerts in 2013. As founder of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation she is actively passing on her invaluable experiences to a new generation of singers, whilst continuing her many recital and concert engagements. She became Patron of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2011 and assumes the same role in 2013.

Sergei Nakariakov has broken through more than a few of the perceived boundaries framing the world of the trumpet in classical music. Dubbed “The Paganini of the trumpet” and “Caruso of the Trumpet”, Sergei has developed a unique musical voice, which is much more than a vehicle for astonishing virtuosity. His repertoire includes not only the entire range of original literature for the trumpet; but is continually expanding into broader territories, including many

fascinating transcriptions, while he searches for ever new means of musical expression. At the same time, he has single-handedly brought the flügelhorn to prominence on the concert platform.

Born in Gorky in 1977, Sergei pays tribute to the technical and musical gifts he has learned from his father, Mikhail Nakariakov, who transcribed a large repertoire of classical concertos for the trumpet - and

with whom he studied daily from the very beginning, and since 1995 exclusively! From the age of ten Sergei started to perform with orchestras in major concert halls of the Soviet Union before his family moved to Israel and he became at liberty to travel and perform worldwide.

He has appeared in the world’s leading venues including the Hollywood Bowl, New York’s Lincoln Center and London’s Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall. He performs across Europe and in Japan and North America, collaborating with the world’s most feted musicians, orchestras and conductors. In recital he works with his sister Vera Okhotnikova or Maria Meerovitch. Winner of many awards for his recordings, Nakariakov’s discography with Teldec has drawn huge acclaim. In July 2012, Warner Classics released a new recording of Sergei Nakariakov and Maria Meerovitch, “Widmung”, showcasing the varied repertoire for trumpet and flugelhorn. Sergei Nakariakov’s recent engagements include tours to Europe, Brazil, Japan and the USA, highlights including the trumpet concerto by Jorg Widmann, specially composed for him. He plays instruments by Antoine Courtois (Paris).

An exclusive Decca artist, Behzod Abduraimov’s debut recital CD was released during the 2011/12 season to great critical acclaim. Extraordinarily talented, he is an artist establishing an impressive reputation for electrifying audiences with his captivating performances. He made a number of debuts during the 2011/12 season including Atlanta, Tokyo and Kansas

City Symphonies, National Arts Center Orchestra Ottawa, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, English Chamber Orchestra as well as completing a hugely successful major tour of Australia.

Further ahead, he will feature as part of the Gilmore Rising Star and Vancouver Recital Series, London’s International Piano Series and Milan’s La Societa dei Concerti. He has the major support of Vladimir Ashkenazy and other collaborations include Charles Dutoit, Pinchas Zukerman, Michael Christie, Krzysztof Urbański, Michael Stern and Alexander Lazarev.

At the age of 18, Behzod achieved a sensational victory in the 2009 London International Piano Competition, winning first prize with his thrilling performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

Behzod Abduraimov was born in Tashkent in 1990 and began to play the piano at the age of five. He is currently studying at the International Center for Music at Park University, Kansas City with Stanislav Loudenitch.

Behzod Abduraimov PianoJack Liebeck made his concerto debut with the Hallé Orchestra aged fifteen and has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras under the baton of Martyn Brabbins, Gunter Herbig, Alexander Lazarev, Sir Neville Marriner, Sakari Oramo, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Leonard Slatkin, Bramwell Tovey and Barry Wordsworth.

In 2009 Jack signed an exclusive contract with Sony, for whom he released the Dvorak Violin Concerto with Garry Walker and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Dvorak Sonata and Sonatina and a disc of the complete Brahms Sonatas with Katya Apekisheva. The Dvorak recording secured him the 2010 Classical BRIT Award “Young British Performer of the Year”. Jack is featured as soloist on the soundtrack of Jane Eyre, written by Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli, which was released in September 2011 also on Sony

Classical. In the 2012/13 season he will record the first of a series of discs for Hyperion Records.

Recent performances include Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Roberto Gerhard’s Concerto with the Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Mendelssohn with the Royal Philharmonic and English Chamber orchestras, Lindberg with the Queensland Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic, and Dvorak with the Auckland Philharmonic. He has given acclaimed solo recitals in London (City of London Festival, Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall), Copenhagen and Tilburg, and two chamber concerts with Brett Dean, whose concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing, he performed with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in 2011.

Quintin Ballardie OBE FRAM Artistic Director Quin Ballardie studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music, after which he became

the youngest ever Principal Viola at Sadlers Wells Opera. He then freelanced with many of London’s major orchestras, and also became a member of the London Piano Quartet. His appointment as Principal Viola of the London Philharmonic Orchestra brought with it the opportunity for high-profile concerto appearances with this orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall (where he appeared as soloist at several BBC Promenade concerts).

Quin Ballardie oversaw the formation of the English Chamber Orchestra in the early 1960s and was its Principal Viola until 1998. He has been the ECO’s Managing Director and Artistic Director for over four decades. In 1985 he was honoured to receive the Order of the British Empire for services to music.

Quin Ballardie writes: Any mention of the English Chamber Orchestra would be totally incomplete without recording the tremendous contribution over the years made by my two friends and colleagues, Pauline Gilbertson and Charlotte Templeman.

Pauline Gilbertson joined me many years ago after graduating in music from Newcastle University, where she also worked part-time for Newcastle Festival and the City Hall Concert Series. Amongst other things her job involves negotiating with conductors and soloists and their managers, as well as with concert venues, promoters and agencies.

Our fellow director Charlotte Templeman studied music at Birmingham University and is a keen amateur cellist. She joined the ECO 15 years ago, and her job includes overseeing the all-important booking of the ECO musicians as well as tour and concerts management.

The success of the English Chamber Orchestra during these last few challenging years is in no small measure due to the herculean efforts of these two ladies.

Born in Lancashire in 1955, Stephen Johnson studied at the Northern School of Music, Manchester, and under Alexander Goehr at Leeds University. After a brief period working for BBC Radio 3 he did a postgraduate course at Manchester University. Then two friends - the composer Robert Simpson and the record producer Andrew Keener - suggested he try musical journalism. This soon grew into a full-time

career. Since then he has broadcast frequently for BBC Radio 3, 4 and World Service, major projects including 14 programmes about the

music of Bruckner for the centenary of the composer’s death (1996), and has written regularly for The Independent, The Guardian, BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone. During 1998-99 he was Chief Music Critic for The Scotsman. From 2003-5 he lectured at Exeter University. Stephen has now given up concert criticism (with some relief) and makes a living entirely by writing and talking about music. He is now a regular presenter for Radio 3’s Discovering Music, and the author of Bruckner Remembered (Faber 1998) and books on Mahler and Wagner (Naxos 2006 & 2007), and has contributed to The Cambridge Companion to Conducting (CUP 2004). In 2003 Stephen was voted Amazon.com Classical Music Writer of the Year. His radio documentary, Shostakovich: Journey into Light, was nominated for a Sony Award in 2007.

Described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘in a class of his own’ James has been the prize-winner of the Wigmore Hall, Das Lied, Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber Song Competitions. In 2012 he won a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship Award.

He regularly records for BBC Radio 3 and has appeared at venues and festivals throughout Europe collaborating with singers

and instrumentalists including the Elias and Heath Quartets, Mark Padmore, Sir Thomas Allen, Katherine Broderick and Annette Dasch.

Over the last year he has given recitals at Wigmore Hall, Berlin Konzerthaus, Musikverein, the St. Magnus, Cheltenham and City of London Festivals and recorded the Britten Canticles for BBC Radio 3 and Signum. As a soloist he made his debut in the Nottingham International Series and appeared with the Ulster Orchestra. Future engagements include recitals at Wigmore Hall with Lisa Milne, Sophie Bevan, Ian Bostridge, Ailish Tynan, Mark Padmore and Adam Walker and recordings for BBC Radio 3 with Ben Johnson.

James is a Professor at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

Maria Meerovitch was born in St. Petersburg into a family of non-musicians, yet she began her musical education at the age of six. At the early age of eight Maria performed for the first time at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall where she was complimented by the great pianist Grigory Sokolov. She continued studying at the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, with piano as her principal subject.

In 1990 Maria relocated to Belgium on a “Fonds Alex de Vries” (Yehudi Menuhin Foundation) scholarship. She graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (cum laude) and immediately began teaching piano and chamber music at the same institution.

She subsequently won first prize at several international competitions (including the G.B. Viotti competition in Italy and the Ch. Hennen Competition in the Netherlands) and since then has performed as soloist and chamber music player at many international venues and

festivals worldwide, including the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Festival International d’Art Lyrique (Aix-en-Provence), Bad-Kissingen Musik Festival, Baxter Hall (Cape Town), Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Cité de la Musique (Paris), Opera City Hall (Tokyo), Musikhalle (Hamburg), Newport Music Festival (Newport), Martha Argerich’s Meeting Point (Beppu) and Theatre des Champs Elysees (Paris).

She has toured the USA, Europe, the Far East, Russia, Israel and South Africa and has played with many international orchestras, including Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo New Vivaldi Ensemble, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and Nordic Symphony Orchestra.

Maria’s passion for teaching young musicians has taken her to America, Germany, South Africa and Belgium where she has given master classes and has studied the treatment of piano playing related tendonitis.

Maria has recorded with a variety of international chamber music partners, including a close duo partnership with Sergei Nakariakov. In 2005 Maria appeared with Sergei in an ARTE production “Ich war nie ein Wunderkind”.

Stephanie Gonley made her first appearance with the ECO as a soloist in 1990, which led to her appointment in April 1991 as one of its leaders. She is the youngest person to hold this position and only the fourth leader in the Orchestra’s history.

Stephanie was a scholar at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was a pupil of David Takeno.

She continued her studies with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York, and later with Ilan Gronich at the Hochschule in Berlin. Amongst other awards, she was a winner of the prestigious Shell-LSO National Scholarship. She is currently a Professor of Violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

She is now firmly established as one of the leading British violinists of her generation, and appears as a soloist with many of the leading orchestras

both in the UK and abroad. Stephanie was leader of the Vellinger Quartet (winners of the 1994 London International String Quartet Competition) and is leader of the ECO Ensemble, performing chamber music in the UK and abroad.

With the ECO Stephanie appears regularly as both director and soloist and her solo recordings with the Orchestra include Dvorak’s Romance for EMI with Sir Charles Mackerras, hailed by Gramophone as “a winner ... the playing polished and beautifully balanced” and Bach’s violin concertos and Brandenburg Concertos. Solo concert appearances with the ECO include Bernstein’s Serenade, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante (in which she appears as viola soloist on some occasions, and violin soloist on others), Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ and Mozart’s Concertone for two violins (partnered by Maxim Vengerov).

She has directed the English Chamber Orchestra in concerts across the UK as well as on tour in Moscow, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, France and Italy.

Passports Passports should be valid for 3 months after your return date. Should you require visas for any part of your cruise, please make sure you obtain them before embarkation. Passports will be collected on arrival on board and will be kept in the purser’s office for the duration of the cruise unless customs demands otherwise.

Travel Insurance We recommend you carry a copy of your insurance certificate with you at all times.

Dress Code Day wear: Casual resort-wear, including light cotton clothing is recommended. Warmer layers are also advisable. When in public areas or the restaurants, swimsuits are not allowed. A jacket and/or sweater in case of unexpected rain, or powerful air-conditioning. A hat and sunglasses are always recommended. During your time ashore we recommend you wear comfortable footwear, many of the roads still have old fashioned cobblestones which can be uneven and slippery.Evening wear: Smart casual for most evenings apart from the two cocktail evenings. For gentlemen we suggest a suit and tie (not tuxedo/DJ) and for ladies a cocktail dress or suit.

Daily Programme You will receive a daily programme on board with detailed information for that day. Please check these every day for the most up to date schedule. From time to time and for reasons and circumstances outside our control, the times shown on the itinerary may alter. Marianne and André will advise you of any changes at the earliest possible opportunity.
