Si parte come al solito da Viterbo. Il capoluogo ospitail SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA DELLA QUERCIA (1470),uno dei luoghi di culto del Viterbese ancora oggi particolarmentefrequentato dai fedeli. Il 10 settembre di ogni anno vi confluisconoi rappresentanti delle Confraternite di tutto il Lazio per dare vitaad una solenne processione per rinnovare il cosiddettoPATTO DAMORE con la Vergine.Al suo interno il MUSEO DEGLI EX VOTO, una straordinariaraccolta di tavolette e altri oggetti votivi, i pi antichi dei qualirisalgono alla fine del XV secolo.

Our j ourney begins fr om VITERBO as usual. The capital of t he

Province has the SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA DELLA QUERCIA(1470), one of the places of worship that is still visited by many

believers. Every year on the 1Oth September representatives of

the Brotherhoods from all over Latium come together to bring out

a solemn procession to renew the so-called PACT OF LOVE with the

Virgin Mary. Inside t he Sanctuary itself is th e MUSEUM OF THE

EX-VOTO, an extraor dinary collection of panels and ot her obj ects used

as offerings, the more ancient ones dating back to the XVth century.

Lavvenimento pi spettacolare e di maggiore intensit religiosasi tiene tuttavia il 3 settembre di ogni anno. Nel giorno dedicatoalla ricorrenza della patrona SANTA ROSA viene portatain processione, da ben 100 Facchini, unimponente MACCHINAilluminata, alta 30 metri e del peso di cinque tonnellate.A Santa Rosa, che guid i Viterbesi nella rivolta contro Federico II, dedicato un SANTUARIO nelle cui vicinanze situata la CASANATALE. Tra le chiese di maggiore importanza, le romanicheS. SISTO (IX sec.), S. GIOVANNI IN ZOCCOLI (1037) e S. MARIANUOVA (1080). Sempre a Viterbo da visitare, nella frazionedi S. MARTINO AL CIMINO, limponente ABBAZIA CISTERCENSE(1150). A SORIANO NEL CIMINO sono situate la CHIESAe le CATACOMBE DI S. EUTIZIO, dedicate al Santo che da questeparti sub il martirio ai tempi di Diocleziano.

Di particolare interesse a VALLERANO il seicentesco SANTUARIODELLA MADONNA DEL RUSCELLO (disegnato dal Vignola)e la CHIESA DELLA MADONNA DELLA PIEVE (XI sec.). Erettasulla grotta dove fu sepolto il Santo, la CHIESA DI S. FAMIANOa GALLESE risale al 1155. Da Gallese ci spostiamo a CIVITACASTELLANA per ammirare il trecentesco DUOMO il cui porticopresenta raffinate decorazioni a mosaico. Dopo una sosta aCASTEL S. ELIA per visitare il SANTUARIO, dedicato a MARIASANTISSIMA AD RUPES, e la BASILICA DI S. ELIA (VIII-XI sec.)si arriva a NEPI dove sono visitabili le CATACOMBE DI S. SAVINELLA.

Torniamo al Romanico con le chiese di S. FRANCESCO (IX sec.)a VETRALLA, e S. MARIA IN CASTELLO (inizi XII) a TARQUINIA.Nella citt costiera di particolare interesse religioso la notturnaPROCESSIONE DEL MARE che si tiene ogni 15 agosto.Le pi importanti chiese romaniche sono tuttavia a TUSCANIA.Lantico centro etrusco conserva le splendide BASILICHEdi S. PIETRO e di S. MARIA MAGGIORE (VIII sec.).Sempre a Tuscania, di particolare suggestione le due processioniche vi si svolgono il VENERD SANTO cos come in altri centridella provincia; particolarmente interessanti quelle di BAGNOREGIOe ORTE. Le soste successive riguardano MARTA, per la visitaal SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA DEL MONTE, meta ogni 14 maggiodella BARABBATA (pittoresca processione di ringraziamento)e ISCHIA DI CASTRO, per visitare il SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNADEL GIGLIO. Arriviamo quindi ad ACQUAPENDENTE dove situatala CATTEDRALE DEL SANTO SEPOLCRO (XI sec.) e dove,nella terza domenica di maggio in occasione della ricorrenzadella Madonna del Fiore, si svolge la famosa processione deI PUGNALONI (pannelli colorati realizzati con fiori, muschi ederbe a ricordo della cacciata di Federico Barbarossa). Costeggiando

il lago si arriva a BOLSENA dove, ai tempi di Diocleziano, subil martirio S. CRISTINA. Sempre nella citt lacuale nel 1263avvenne il famoso MIRACOLO DEL CORPUS DOMINI, oggiricordato con una solenne processione che si snoda nel centrostorico su un lunghissimo tappeto di fiori colorati. Di particolareimportanza la CHIESA (XI sec.) e le CATACOMBE DI S. CRISTINA.Si sale quindi a MONTEFIASCONE per ammirare la particolaree suggestiva CHIESA DI S. FLAVIANO (XI-XII sec.).Infine, arriviamo a CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO. Il paese che muore,che conserva la CHIESA DI S. DONATO (VIII sec.), famosoanche per aver dato i natali a SAN BONAVENTURA, il ministrodellOrdine Francescano, filosofo e scrittore.Nel periodo natalizio suggestive rappresentazioni della Nativitsi svolgono ogni anno in tutta la provincia; di particolare interessei PRESEPI VIVENTI di CORCHIANO e BASSANO IN TEVERINA

The most spectacular religious event is held on the 3 rd

September every year. On the day dedicated to the Patron Saint

of Viterbo, SANTA ROSA, an imposing illuminated MACCHINA

is carried in procession by 100 Facchini (port ers). It is 30 met ers

high and w eighs 5 tons. A Sanctuary is dedicated to the saint

who guided the Viterbesi in the revolt aganist Frederic II.

Near th e SANCTUARY is situat ed her NATIVE HOME.

Among the churches of prime importance are the romanesque

churches of S.SISTO (IX century), S.GIOVANNI IN ZOCCOLI

(103 7) and S. MARIA NUOVA (X century).

Remaining in Viterbo we can v isit the imposing CISTERCIAN

ABBEY in the country ward of S. MARTINO AL CIMINO.

At SORIANO AL CIMINO are situated the CHURCH and

the CATACOMBS OF S.EUTIZIO, dedicated to the Saint who

became a martyr during the Diocletian period.At VALLERANO is the 17th century SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA

DEL RUSCELLO (desig ned by Vign ola) and the CHURCH OF THE

MADONNA DELLA PIEVE (XI century).

At GALLESE is the CHURCH OF S. FAMIANO, dat ing back t o 11 55,

erected on a cave where the Saint was buried (tel. + 39.0761 .49502 1).

From Gallese we move on to CIVITA CASTELLANA to admire the

14th century DUOMO (Cathedral) w hose portico is covered with

refined mosaic decorations. After stopping off at CASTEL S. ELIA

to visit the SANCTUARY dedicated to MARIA SS. AD RUPES and

the BASILICA OF S. ELIA (VII I- XI century) we reach NEPI wh ere

we can visit the CATACOMBS OF S. SAVINELLA. We then return

to the Romanesque style with the churches of S. FRANCESCO

(IX century) at VETRALLA and S. MARIA IN CASTELLO

(beg. XII century) at TARQUINIA. Of particular r eligious interest

in the coastline town is the annual nocturnal PROCESSION OF

THE SEA which takes place on 15 th August. However the mostimport ant rom anesque style churches are at TUSCANIA.

The ancient Etruscan centre h olds the splendid BASILICAS

OF S. PIETRO E SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE (VI II centu ry) .

Also in Tuscania of particular interest are t he two pr ocessions

that take place on GOOD FRIDAY as in other towns in the

province; particularly int eresting are t hose held at BAGNOREGIO

and ORTE. Next stop will be made at MARTA to visit the

SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA DEL MONTE, destination

of the BARABBATA, a picturesque procession of thanksgiving

held every 14th May Then on to ISCHIA DI CASTRO to visit the

SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA DEL GIGLIO. We then arrive

at ACQUAPENDENTE where the CATHEDRAL OF HOLY SEPULCHRE

(XI century) is situated and where on the third Sunday of May,

in occasion of the ann iversary of th e Madonna del Fiore,

the fam ous procession of t he I PUGNALONI takes place(they are

coloured panels decorated with flowers, m oss and grass in

memory of the driving away of Federico Barbarossa). Continuing

along the coastline of the lake we reach BOLSENA, where during

the Diocletian period S. CRISTINA was martyr ized. In the same

town the famous MIRACLE OF CORPUS DOMINI took place in

1263, remembered nowdays with a solemn procession that

unfolds in the hisoric town centre on an extremely long carpet

of colourful flowers. Of par ticular imp ortance are t he CHURCH

(XI century) and the CATACOMBS OF S. CRISTINA. Moving on to

MONTEFIASCONE we can admire the uncommon and imposing

CHURCH OF S. FLAVIANO (XI-XII century). Finally we arrive

at CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO, the dying t own w here we find t he

CHURCH OF S. DONATO (VIII century). This town is also famous

to have been the birthplace of SAN BONAVENTURA, minister of

the Franciscan Order, philosopher and writer. During the Christmas

period fascinating presentations of th e Nativity tak e place each

year throughout the Province; especially interesting are

the LIVE CRIBS at CORCHIANO and BASSANO IN TEVERINA
