INTRODUCING...ITKFASHION

THE NEW URBAN STREETWEAR BRAND BASED IN CANTERBURY

If you hadn?t heard of ILLYFE unt i l now...i t?s t ime to sit up and take not ice.

DESIGNER PROFILE:

NAME: Lennox Kwan

AGE: 19

A brand which has emerged from the streets of Southend-on-Sea, ILLYFE is an urban label which now uses Canterbury as a base and the rest of the UK as its playground. It is the brainchild of upcoming designer, DJ, entrepreneur and student Lennox Kwan. Originally hailing from Hong Kong, Kwan says ILLYFE brings ?something fresh and new? to the

scene.

How can something new be brought to the already over-saturated streetwear wave? This is where things start to become really interesting. ILLYFE stands out from the crowd through its unwill ingness to become one of the one dimensional labels that we are all so used to seeing. Kwan speaks of the

vinyl culture being a huge inf luence on ILLYFE: ?the pure and raw sounds of vinyl are things we are keen to represent in our line?.

ILLYFE is also making

movements across the Atlantic in the USA. A brave move which embodies the American dream, Kwan feels ILLYFE has the capacity to prosper over the pond. It is clear this guy doesn?t do things by halves ? he has serious ambition. Kwan has linked up with fellow Brit ?Menace? ? a grime rapper f inding his

feet in Florida ? and re leased a highly anticipated collaboration which culminated in a successful track which takes the labels name as its t it le. The record itself is indicative of ILLYFE ? vibrant, dif ferent, and leaves you wanting to know more.

Expect big, big things

from ILLYFE ? there is no doubt they will go far. Not scared of originality, the beauty of the brand comes through its individualistic nature and unwill ingness to f it in with the crowd. Immerse yourself into the ILLYFE culture and don't look back.

REVIEWING...HER MIND CRIES

Losing a parent is never easy ? let alone when you?re a lonely, introverted teenager with no one there to support you. That is the position which Hope, the protagonist of Her Mind Cries f inds herself in. Written and directed by twenty year-old Kent University student Max Hilton, the f ilm is a clever short which tells the story of Hope trying to deal with the death of her mother. It is centred on her suffering from the f ive stages of grief: denial, anger, depression, bargaining and

acceptance.

At f irst, the f ilm seems a hard nut to crack. However

when you have litt le t ime to think it over, its bril l iance begins to manifest itself inside your mind. Its simplistic shots and dialogue are at an

antithesis to the deeply complex questions and emotions which arise from strong acting and an entirely thought provoking plot. Quite simply, this is a stripped back f ilm which relies only on superb writ ing and highly intell igent directing.

Playing the protagonist Hope, Simone Stewart is gripping. She masterfully interacts with her co-stars and is nothing short of marvellous in her ability to ensure the audience empathises with her in

5

Page 7: ITK - InTheKnow

her most troublesome of t imes. The f ilm follows Hope?s journey as she encounters the f ive stages of grief in personif ied form, and struggles to come to terms with her mother?s passing. Indeed, it is not until the clever ending that we see why suffering exists at all.

Alongside the excellent work of Director Max Hilton, composer Dan Iacono cannot go unmentioned. Also a twenty year-old student, Iacono?s score carries the f ilm

delightfully through its meandering mental journey, without ever overdoing it. Effortlessly simplistic and perfectly poised, its remarkable work of such skill comes from someone so young.

Perhaps the only negative of an otherwise stellar work, is that the f ilm is possibly only fully understood after a second watch. However, in some ways this is a positive ? Her Mind Cries is an enigma which any f ilm goer would endeavour to solve. It is no surprise that, despite only being

released in April, Her Mind Cries has already received a nomination in the Canterbury University Film Festival. Expect more nominations, and the wins will surely come roll ing in.

Put simply, Her Mind Cries is a fantastic short f ilm that is deep, intell igent and provocative, and is well shot, scored and edited. It?s not often that a short f ilm can be so mentally stimulating, but Her Mind Cries achieves this bril l iantly. Big things are expected of Hilton after this. It is a must watch.

RATING: 4 SEAGO STARS

Despite not being available for general release, you can catch Her Mind Cries being shown at Canterbury University Film Festival on 24th May.

TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...JOSH REES

Could he be the next big thing?

This month we f ind out everything you?d need to know about Josh Rees, former Arsenal and current Nottingham Forest midf ielder!

1. Favourite player as a kid?

I'd say Zidane, because I've never seen someone look so at ease on the pitch and some of the things he could do with the ball were out of this world. Would easily pay week in week out to watch him. Ronaldinho would also be put in the same bracket. Domestically I looked up to Patrick Vieira when he was Arsenal captain. He played in the same position as me and used

to dominate games.

2. Favourite pre-match tunes?

Usually nowadays the team brings speakers and we tend to play RnB or House, but I'm not too fussed probably because I'm focused more on the game.

3. Favourite goal you?ve scored?

I scored a goal vs Aston Villa U18's on the half volley from about 40 yards. It?s definitely the best goal

I've scored - as soon as I hit it I knew it was in.

4. Best player you?ve played with / against?

With ? I?d have to say Cesc Fabregas, who I trained with at Arsenal, and one time sticks out where he was truly amazing. I?ve never seen a

7

Page 9: ITK - InTheKnow

more intell igent player? he was ten steps ahead everyone else on another wavelength.

Against- Brazil trained at Arsenal before the London Olympics and a few of the young lads took part in their session. We had to play as a defence and I had to mark Oscar and it was a nightmare. Give him a yard of space and he will hurt you.

5. Favourite team to play as on FIFA?

I'm a football purist so

when I play FIFA tend to keep the ball forever so I'd have to say Barcelona.

6. Favourite f i lm?

The Departed.

7. Favourite moment as a footbal ler so far?

My league debut was special. But I had so many good times at Arsenal as well.

8. Favourite sportsman outside of footbal l?

Strange one but I think Ronnie O'Sullivan. I'm not really a snooker fan but he's a genius and makes it look so easy.

9. Favourite pre-match meal?

I usually go for brown pasta with red pesto.

AND FINALLY..

10. Where would you say your future l ies?

I would like to believe I have the ability to ply my trade in the premier league. It 's an ambitious goal but I think it 's def initely realistic. I

know it won't be a straightforward path and therefore I'm fully prepared to earn my stripes so to speak, playing in the lower leagues. I am settled at Forest now and would like to be able to play there regularly and

hopefully see them make a long awaited return to the premier league. Looking beyond that everyone dreams to represent their country at senior level and although I know it 's a long shot, nothing is impossible.
