Belgrade, Serbia, is one of the oldest cities in Europe, affording it a long and turbulent history. Due to its strategic location, Belgrade has been battled over in 115 wars and has been demolished 44 times. Although Belgrade has managed to maintain and preserve its own rich heritage, you can feel the influence of other cultures, making for a very unique city.

Although the people of Belgrade have been through so much historically, they are nevertheless known for their hospitality and zest for enjoying life, family, and friends. To truly get a taste of the Serbian culture, visit Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, or skadarlija

street: a cobblestone, car-free zone lined with well-known traditional restaurants, art galleries, and souvenir shops. This is where you can enjoy typical national cuisine consisting of grilled meat platters, while listening to the sounds of Serbian brass bands entertaining guests.

Just a few blocks away is the main pedestrian and shopping zone known as Knez mihailova. It is lined with a large number of impressive buildings and mansions built during the late 1870s. Named one of the most beautiful pedestrian zones in Eastern Europe, it’s undoubtedly one of the prettiest parts of Belgrade. Take your time

strolling down this magical street, stopping for coffee or some shopping along the way.

When you arrive at the end of Knez Mihailova, you will come upon the formidable and magnificent Kalemegdan fortress. For centuries, the city population was concentrated within its walls, providing many historical landmarks to observe, including the famed monument The Victor, protector of Belgrade. With its lush surroundings, numerous walkways, and beautiful views of the Danube and Sava river confluence, it’s the perfect oasis in the heart of urban Belgrade.

Nowhere has this tinkering been performed with such aplomb as at Spa World in Osaka, a theme park that combines traditional Japanese onsen with baths and spa treatments from around the world.

The bathing area is split into two zones, each home to more than half a dozen gender-separated public baths. In the Asian Zone, you can soak in a hamam, a traditional Turkish bath modelled on the inner courtyard of a mosque, or try bathing areas designed around Persian and Balinese themes. There are also several traditional Japanese onsen, two of which, in the best local bathing tradition, are set outdoors in calming natural surrounds.

The European Zone is just as varied. You could start with a dip in the Ancient Rome bath, a large Roman-style bathhouse inspired

by the Trevi Fountain, then try baths inspired by the Parthenon, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Blue Grotto off the coast of Capri. The most eye-catching of the lot – Atlantis – is designed to transport you to the mythical city after which it is named. It cleverly creates an underwater sensation by positioning tanks full of tropical fish, and small sharks directly underneath the bath.

Not that Spa World limits itself to bathing. You can get a good sweat on at one of the complex’s saunas, or make use of the well-equipped gym. For even more pampering, visit the Esthetic Salon for a Japanese, Thai, Chinese, or Swedish-style massage, or perhaps even a total-body mudpack at the Mud Spa. The bentonite mud used penetrates skin pores to treat and prevent a host of skin conditions, including pimples, rough skin, blemishes, lines, and wrinkles.

And if you are travelling with kids who might not appreciate the art of relaxation, no need to worry. There is a pool with aquatic playground equipment (‘like a jungle gym in the pool’, is how Spa World puts it), and water slides, the longest of which twists and turns over 100 metres. Add to that plenty of places to grab a meal or a sweet snack, and Spa World has all the bases covered.

Some restaurants strive for greatness: Moonflower had greatness thrust upon it.

“It was started as a private club – even before Palacina Hotel was built,” says director Aaren Macksoud. “But a group of local ladies liked it so much that [they] raved to everyone in the city about it.”

Today Moonflower is one of the great names among Nairobi restaurants and is famed as much for its regular jazz evenings as for the fine food and chic terrace dining. The menu offers wonderful international cuisine but is particularly attractive to visitors as one of the few places in the city where you can eat exquisite Kenyan specialities. Try spicy Kenyan gizzards followed by chargrilled ostrich steaks for real haute cuisine Kenya style.

tamarind nairobi is serviced every day by planes carrying fresh fish from the coast. Tamarind has been the flagship of the capital’s ‘fleet’ of seafood restaurants since its doors opened in 1977.

If you’re not hooked by seafood, Tamarind also offers meat – from Kenyan rib-eye to Mt Kenya quail – but the seafood is what brings regular diners back time after time. Signature dishes to focus on include the hibiscus-flamed seafood, African-style bouillabaisse, Swahili lobster, and wonderful Kenyan freshwater tilapia cooked in a variety of mouth-watering ways.

gordon rAMSAy’S protégé JASon AthErton made a bold move away from Ramsay’s Maze concept, striking out on his own with a unique idea – a British ‘social eating’ spot. It’s proved a massive hit in London.

It took chef Jason Atherton 12 months to develop and execute the concept behind pollen Street Social. It took the Michelin inspectors just 11 months to notice, awarding the venue a Michelin star in April 2011. Since then, Atherton’s unique take on the modern dining experience has won him plaudits from pundits, punters, and professionals alike.

“The Pollen Street Social ethos is to turn fine dining into fun and give people the complete night out,” says Atherton. “So, serious food with great service and of course great drinks and a fun night out.”

There are several distinct spaces, including the main dining room Restaurant, the no-bookings cocktails-and-tapas bar known as the Social, and the unique Dessert Bar – pull up one of six chairs and ogle the pastry chefs as they prepare your dessert.

It makes for a vibrant, urban, and distinctly cosmopolitan ambience. But inclusive is the new exclusive, and in these modern times everyone’s invited.

In Warsaw, there is an adventure lurking behind every corner, and no two streets are the same. Pre-war architecture stands beside contemporary buildings, melding together, creating a new synergy. According to an old folk tale, the city’s

name comes from Wars, a fisherman, who eventually fell in love with a mermaid, Sawa. Up to this day a mermaid is depicted on the city’s coat of arms. It can be seen on taxis, and there's also an impressive mermaid sculpture in the Old Town square.

16:30take in majestic views of the city from the observation deck at the top of St Anne’s church bell tower. In the distance you can see the 58,000-seater national Stadium, built for the Euro 2012 football championship.

17:00Show off your skating skills at the ice rink at the foot of the palace of culture and Science. If that’s not your thing, fotoplastikon (closed Mondays) is a fascinating show of stereographic pictures depicting life around the city.

20:00u kucharzy’s open kitchen allows you a behind-the-scenes look at the chefs as they prepare your dish! The beef tartare and sautéed wild mushrooms come highly recommended from both locals and visitors alike.

23:00End the day on a high at panorama bar and lounge. Set on the 40th floor of the Marriott hotel, it offers great views of the city skyline. Be sure to ask the bar staff for ‘Apple pie’, a Polish staple: Zubrówka vodka mixed with apple juice.

designed in the 1950s by revered modernist architect Vann Molyvann. “What Java has done is great – showcasing young, up-and-coming artists. The coffee is the best in the city. It’s in a lovely French colonial building. My tip is to sit in one of the wicker chairs upstairs with all of the orchids and lovely tiles and watch over the city,” Sopheap says. “Also worth checking out is the edgy, modern 3 Sa Sa bassac gallery near the Royal Palace,” he adds.

Mornings are also a great time to explore Phnom Penh’s illustrious Buddhist pagodas. He says the gilded 4 Wat lanka, flanking the Independence Monument, is one of the city’s most beautiful.

“Just across from Wat Lanka is Street 278, my favourite street in the city. I love the liveliness of it. One of the best lunch spots is 5 Sonoma. The oysters here are amazing – decadent but affordable. A couple of blocks south-east is 6 Sushi bar. The sashimi here is top-grade; they fly it in fresh from Vietnam every day,” he says. Another block over is 7 la p’tite france. “The hearty steaks are excellent, as is the duck confit – as good as you get in France – and there’s a great wine selection,” he says.

“Everyone becomes addicted to massages here. One of the best you’ll get is at 8 om Massage. I usually go for two hours and have a traditional Khmer massage and foot massage – what luxury!

Sopheap frequents Khmer barbecue restaurant 11 Sovana on Street 21. “I always take visitors here and they’re always impressed. I love the grilled beef, and sublime pepper-and-lime dipping sauce. The fried corn is delicious.

“I love rock music and Khmer kitsch covers from the 1960s. My favourite bar is 12 Equinox back on 278. I hate pretentious bars and this isn’t at all. Check out an art or photography exhibition or listen to a band; they have great Khmer fusion bands playing there like Durian or the Cambodian Space Project.”

The exhibition will take visitors on a 3D immersive experience into the coffin of nesperennub, a priest who lived and died in Egypt nearly 3,000 years ago. The exhibition uses non-invasive techniques – X-rays, CT scans, and advanced computer technology – to take visitors through a ‘virtual unwrap’, a 3D journey combined with dramatic reconstructions of the priest’s life and mummification in ancient Egypt, portraying its every feature using a forensic approach.

Comprising artefacts from the Egyptian Collection of the british Museum, and high-tech visuals that untangle the mystery of mummification through 3D films, this exhibition centres around Nesperennub’s mummy, its cartonnage case, and an array of funerary objects and figurines.

The 3D ‘unwrapping’ of Nesperennub has provided

a unique insight into the complex process of mummification and life in ancient Egypt, and it has even been possible to reconstruct Nesperennub’s likely appearance using CT scans to replicate his skull and build a model of his face.

Nesperennub lived nearly 3,000 years ago in Thebes, one of the greatest cities in ancient Egypt, full of temples and grand palaces. The text on the cartonnage case reveals that Nesperennub and his father worked as priests in the great religious complex of Karnak.

Nesperennub died aged approximately 40 years old. His skull shows a small, unexplained hole above the left eye, which might indicate an illness that could have proved fatal. After death Nesperennub would have had his organs removed, except for the heart, before being embalmed with resin. Next the corpse was

decorated with pieces of jewellery – the X-rays show rings on both hands – as well as amulets.

The body was wrapped, then placed inside its cartonnage case – layers of linen covered with glue or plaster, then left to set hard. The cartonnage case is brightly painted: at the top the scarab beetle with a falcon’s head is the sun god Ra. Under this the god Sokar is shown as a mummified falcon. Lower down, a yellow dome with two feathers coming from the top is a sign of the god Osiris. Osiris and Ra were thought to hold the key to life after death. The case was placed inside a coffin with Nesperennub’s face and hieroglyphs painted on the outside.

The exhibition is presented through a collaboration between the British Museum and CSMVS, and is brought to Mumbai by bp and reliance foundation.

B al-Jahiz was one of the first muslim biologists to develop a theory on evolution.

He is regarded as one of the most productive and frequently quoted scholars in Arabic literature, with an originality, wit, and style that buoyed a vast understanding of myriad subjects, earning him praise as the greatest scholar and stylist of the ninth century.

The founder of Arab prose, al-Jahiz was scientifically exceptional. His Book of Animals represents the introduction to the field of zoology, introducing the concept of food chains, and also proposed a scheme of animal evolution that entailed natural selection, environmental determinism, and possibly the inheritance of acquired characteristics long before Darwin walked the earth.

The grandson of a slave, and hailing from an impoverished family even relative to the time, al-Jahiz would religiously attend lectures from the educated elite of the day.

Yet it was books that became al-Jahiz’s calling, and upon realising he had gleaned much of his own knowledge from them, he soon realised he could impart his wisdom to others via the same means. “The book is silent so long as you need silence, eloquent whenever you want discourse,” al-Jahiz observed. “He never interrupts you if you are engaged, but if you feel lonely he will be a good companion. He is a friend who never deceives or flatters you, and he is a comrade who does not grow tired of you.”

While some 30 books authored by al-Jahiz made circulation, he is believed to have authored more than 200 in his life. This selection of pieces from his Book of Misers, both humorous and satirical, is the finest example of al-Jahiz’s prose.

Hikmet Barutcugil is turkey’s foremost living ebruzen, or master of marbling, a traditional Turkish art form that’s been around for centuries.

The technique of paper marbling – manipulating paint on water to create beautiful works of art on paper – is thought to have originated in Persia during the 15th century, though as early as the 10th century the Japanese had a form of marbling called suminagashi. Introduced to the West via the ottoman empire, the art of making ‘Turkish paper’ became tremendously popular in European bookbinding and stationery, especially in Victorian England where it was commonly used for endpapers in books.

When Hikmet Barutcugil enrolled at the istanbul state academy of fine arts in 1973 to study textiles, marbling was, like many time-honoured crafts, on the verge of dying out in turkey. Inspired by a calligraphy professor

to study traditional Turkish art forms, Barutcugil stumbled upon ebru.

“It was love at first sight; I can’t describe it any other way. It had a mysterious beauty,” Barutcugil recalls. Today he is Turkey’s most prominent ebruzen, recognised not only for helping to revive the tradition but also for developing his own school of marbling, known as Barut ebru. His fame extends well beyond the borders of Turkey: he has travelled to more than 30 countries to lecture, teach, and show his work, taken part in close to 200 shows, and published almost a dozen books and exhibition catalogues.

Barutcugil largely taught himself – through his own research and ‘by trial and error’ – because the

one genuine ebru master left in Istanbul in the early 1970s was not teaching the craft. “It’s better that I didn’t study with him; if I had, I would only have learned his style. The fact that I had to discover it on my own opened my horizons and gave me freedom; it was actually an advantage,” says Barutcugil.

Whereas Turkish marbling traditionally made use of a limited number of colours and patterns, the style developed by Barutcugil is much more fluid and abstract, allowing colours to blend together, resulting in subtle in-between hues. His most characteristic pieces feature a wide spectrum of colour tones that ripple across the page like images of rock strata or sound waves. The artist also pioneered the use of marbling techniques on materials other

than paper, such as wood, fabric, and even ceramics, and he is likewise known for combining marbling with other art forms, including painting, miniatures, and calligraphy.

Barutcugil believes people find marbling so mesmerising because of the designs’ uncanny resemblance to the natural world. Different patterns may resemble veined stone or banded rock, living tissue magnified thousands of times, the swirls of natural whirlpools, or butterflies’ wings. “We can describe the technique in technical terms, but we can’t define the patterns themselves. The images are so similar to those found in nature – whether the colouration of the planet Venus or a microscopic view of a cell magnified 4,000 times – that one is astonished. Perhaps, through ebru, God is sharing secrets with us,” remarks Barutcugil.

Indeed, for some, ebru has a mystical significance, and in Ottoman times it was often

the artisans of the Sufi dervish orders who practised the art. Marbling is mysterious, Barutcugil says, because the designs emerge naturally and the artistic process is one of on-the-spot improvisation. “Marbling is something that happens by itself. We can’t intervene very much; it is spontaneous. It’s a natural occurrence that can’t be predicted.” To emphasise his point, he cites a verse from the Quran on the divine properties of water (chapter 21, verse 30): “We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”

thE MAStEr At WorkAlmost every surface in Ebristan – Barutcugil’s workshop and studio, where he also teaches ebru – is decorated with marbling, from the ceramic floor tiles and wooden door panels to the walls lined with framed works by the artist. Located on Istanbul’s Asian side in the uskudar district, the edifice was a mansion built for an Ottoman pasha in 1830 that Barutcugil and his wife spent a decade restoring

before opening Ebristan in 1997.On a weekday morning, a group of adult students crowd around a table as Barutcugil gives a marbling demonstration. With a brush, he sprinkles different colours of paint onto the water, then pulls a fine metal comb across the surface to create an intricate pattern. The background complete, he adds drops of green and purple, drawing out the pools of paint with a bradawl into the shape of a tulip (“The most famous Turkish flower,” Barutcugil notes) before laying a piece of paper over the water and expertly picking it up with the design intact.

In just minutes – and in a way

that appears almost effortless – the piece is complete, needing only to dry and set. That one-of-a-kind works of art can be created with such apparent ease and speed is the magic of marbling, but the flip side is the relative difficulty of manipulating the materials. While some of Barutcugil’s students have become professional artists in their own right, many are content to practise marbling simply as a hobby.

In 2013, Barutcugil will be celebrating the 40th year since he embarked on what would become his lifelong passion, with a retrospective of his work that opens in February at the prestigious Çırağan palace kempinski, Istanbul. But even after all this time, his journey continues. With the

humility of a Buddhist monk, he says, “It’s been 40 years and I still don’t know everything. The more I learn, the more I realise how little I know.”

WhEn it coMES to EuropEAn Ski dEStinAtionS, MoSt pEoplE think of thE AlpS. Baqueira Beret, in the Spanish Pyrenees, however is one of the continent’s big players – and it’s sunnier too.

The fact that there is any skiing in Spain comes as a surprise to many: “Surely Spain is a hot nation, famous for beach resorts, intense heat, and the quintessentially Spanish practice of ‘siesta’ – or, sleeping through it?”, they ask.

But like many hot countries, (including Cyprus, Algeria, Lebanon, and Morocco), Spain’s high mountains are beautifully snow-capped, year-round, and the country is home to 30 ski areas. Unlike Dubai, these do not need to be indoors – although Madrid is home to a similar facility, which was reported to be popular with the Beckhams when David Beckham played for Real Madrid.

Around half of Spain’s ski areas are located in the country’s biggest mountain chain, the pyrenees, which stretches north for nearly

500 km, from a point close to Barcelona. They mark the country’s eastern border with France lying on the other side, and the duty-free principality of Andorra sandwiched between the two.

Most famous of all the resorts, complete with royal approval from Spain’s king Juan carlos, whose family regularly holiday here, is baqueira beret.

Spanish skiing champion, luis Arias, established Baqueira in 1964. He chose the resort’s location in order to take advantage of its exposure to heavy, snow-bearing clouds coming off the Atlantic. The base village was constructed with an eye to tasteful design in local wood and stone at a time when most European resorts were opting for Bauhaus-inspired rectangular concrete buildings.

Even without a helicopter however, you can still access wonderful terrain on or off the piste. Try the 1.5 km-long luis Arias black, named in honour of the great man, or head off to the challenging slopes between baqueira and bonaigua, including the imaginatively named couloirs Ecornacrabes which translates as ‘where goats fall.’ on thE SnoW SAfAriWhen you’re in-resort, one of the best ways to get to know the slopes is to take one of the self-guided itineraries which you can find on Baqueira Beret’s website, www.baqueira.es – available in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish. Newly created for the 2012–13 season, the safaris come in three varieties – easy, moderate, and difficult.

Since then, the resort has gone from strength to strength and has grown to become the country’s largest single ski resort, with 120 km of piste.

But it’s not the size that really matters; first-time skiers love Baqueira for its excellent nursery slopes. Once-a-year skiers can enjoy whizzing about on the sunny cruising slopes, stopping to relax with a coffee at one of the 20 or so mountain restaurants whenever the fancy takes them. Meanwhile, for expert skiers, Baqueira Beret’s off-piste terrain away from the groomed runs has a global fan base, with long powdery descents through the wild and beautiful Arán valley. Unlike ski resorts based across the border in France, the well-heeled can also rent a helicopter to lift them to fresh powder fields for their exclusive use.

Combining local knowledge with meticulously measured routes, you can estimate how long each should take you to complete, depending on how busy it is.

For example, the red Safari – for good skiers – which begins at the info cafe in baqueira 1800, has been measured at 37.13 km long, during which you will ski down 7,097 vertical metres. The trip should take four hours and eight minutes if there are no queues, but could take seven hours and eight minutes if there are an average of ten-minute queues (so make sure you set off early on busy days). The numbers are based on you skiing an average 525 metres every minute, with an average one-minute rest for every 570 metres skied. Simple!

AprèS SkiAlthough few Spaniards take skiing siestas, the national norm of dining late is observed and while après ski is often boisterous at the base of the slopes in the Alps from around 3pm, it’s closer to 8pm in Baqueira Beret before the restaurants start to get busy.

Most resort guests head to one of Baqueira Beret’s many tapas bars, where good honest food is a way of life and staple ingredients of the local cuisine include lamb, rabbit, and game. The rustic Esquiro restaurant (+34 973 64 54 30), is a great choice for regional cuisine such as beef tenderloin with green pepper, prepared by owner and head chef, Manel Gil Fructuoso.

This month marks the 57th

Presidential Inauguration in the United States. If the 2008 Inauguration is any indication – nearly two million people travelled to Washington DC to witness the first African American president take office – the USA’s capital city better be ready. To host, to tour, and, most importantly, to feed. Considering how far the District has come in the last decade, when only a handful of restaurants offered anything beyond steak and potatoes, it’s clear the city has become an international dining destination.

For starters, there are over 160 foreign embassies in town; not to mention 13.5% of DC’s population is foreign-born.

Since everyone wants a taste of home, they bring their food with them. Looking for a Peruvian restaurant serving up rotisserie-style chicken? Try El Pollo Rico in Arlington, VA. How about ceviche? Look no further than La Limeña in Rockville, MD. Choosing where to eat has never been more exciting, and while some cities may have larger ethnic neighbourhoods, Washington DC has variety, and, most notably, specificity. Cuisines within a cuisine. Sure, you can get Asian food at Asia Nine, but why stop there? Snag a table at Toki Underground for steaming bowls of spicy ramen, or Sushi Taro for incredibly fresh sushi, or Little Serow for family-style North-eastern Thai that will leave your eyes watering from the spice.

That’s not to say there aren’t any ethnic pockets. Interestingly, most of the ethnic communities exist in the suburbs of DC (see R&R Taqueria in Elkridge, MD for bold, authentic tacos), but if you head over to 9th and U Street, you’ll find yourself in Little Ethiopia. In fact, DC is home to more Ethiopian restaurants than any city outside of Africa. Grab the injera, a slightly spongy flatbread, and scoop up some wat, a delicious meat and legume stew seasoned with chillies and spices. Try local favourite Dukem, where meals are offered at three levels: mild, medium, and hot, or Ethiopic, where the vegetarian sampler platter reigns supreme. Or check out Habesha Market, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The cafeteria style and affordable prices will put you at ease, but the espresso and flavours will blow your mind.

WiTH A HoST of ETHNic RESTAURANTS, gLobAL EATERiES, AND cHEfS fRoM ARoUND THE WoRLD, the USA’s capital city sits poised for a foodie adventure you won’t soon forget.

While the smaller, family-owned spots are certainly authentic and delicious, there are also a host of upscale, modern eateries specialising in ethnic cuisine that should not be overlooked. Take The Source, for example. Led by executive chef Scott Drewno, this modern Chinese restaurant serves up some of the best dumplings in town. “When we opened five years ago, everyone wanted bread; it was what they expected from a fine dining restaurant,” says Drewno. “But we gave them green beans [marinated in soy and chillies]. It was challenging at first, but eventually people started to venture out and try new things.” Now The Source is perhaps best known for their ahi tuna cones and lacquered duck. When Drewno’s not cooking, you can often find him at Ming’s in the city’s small Chinatown. New big Wong, also in Chinatown, is another local favourite.

soup is a standout) or Zaytinya for a modern interpretation.

In his time off, Chittum often finds himself at Rasika, a contemporary Indian restaurant known for its tawa (griddle), sigri (barbecue), and Tandoori dishes. Palak chaat, a decadent combination of crispy spinach, yogurt, tamarind, and dates, is easily the crowd favourite. If you’re unfamiliar with any of the dishes, let your server guide the experience. “We have knowledgeable staff, so asking lots of questions about unfamiliar spices or ingredients is wise,” suggests Ashok Bajaj, the owner. “Let the waitstaff know if you have food allergies, or don’t enjoy bright or hot spices.”

Whichever restaurant you choose, one thing’s certain: you’ll be transported to an entirely different place, where ingredients and spices may vary, but a good meal is inevitable. What other city can promise that?

Relations between Qatar and the Philippines took a momentous step forward in April this year with the creation of a $1billion joint investment fund, a historic event further strengthening trade and diplomatic links between the two countries.

The Philippines has been active in its quest for Middle East investment: in October 2012, Philippines’ Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo and Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima headed up an investment road show to Qatar and Abu Dhabi to meet government and private sector representatives.

The visit came after a high-level Qatari delegation of some 20 leading businessmen visited the Philippines in January looking to build on bilateral trade between the two countries that is already worth $333 million.

The World Bank has raised its growth forecast for the Philippines to 5 per cent for 2012. Following ratings agency Fitch’s

upgrade last year, Standard & Poor’s upgraded the Philippines’ sovereign debt in July to one notch below investment grade. Expectations of further promotion to investment grade have pulled money in: the stock market and the peso have both rallied strongly in the recent months.

Republic Chemical Industries President John W. Spakowski II believes the Philippines’ “moment” has arrived, and that the country’s investment community is ready to partner with foreign players looking to relocate manufacturing here, while Dean Lao Jr, Managing Director of Chemrez Technologies, adds that western investors will find a huge local market, as well as an ideal regional base in the Philippines. Mr Lao adds that overseas players with a commitment to environmental protection will find that green technology needn’t come at a premium. “Our ChromaFresh® colorants were specifically

reflects Qatar’s confidence in the Philippines as a stable, secure place to do business. Investment into the Philippines slowed during the previous administration, in part because of the country’s reputation for lack of transparency. When President Aquino took office after winning a landslide election in 2010, one of the election pledges he immediately began fulfilling was to improve governance.

Sergio G. Edeza, President and CEO of Bank of Commerce, the Philippines’ 15th largest lender, praises the government’s efforts in improving transparency, and the positive impact it has had on boosting investor confidence: “The private sector is very eager to partner with the government as a result of greater transparency. This definitely attracts investors. The government is committed to implementing legislation to remove inefficiencies and improve the process of collecting taxes as well,” he says.

Eric A. Cruz, Executive Vice President of leading construction firm F.F. Cruz & Co., also highlights the government’s success in improving governance over the last two years, and that the business sector recognizes the results of the Aquino administration’s relentless efforts to improve transparency.

“The Philippines is enjoying an all time high confidence from investors both local and international. This is due to the reforms initiated by the government particularly in improving transparency and accountability,” he says. Mr Cruz also points to the Philippines’ strategic position: “The Philippines is at the heart of Asia. Given our location, the Philippines is now becoming the logistics hub in Asia.”

An important strand in the government’s strategy for growth in the Philippines is providing better access to finance for the poor and particularly in rural areas. This is an issue that the Bank of Makati has been addressing for several years, as its President, Ma. Rodora E. Bañares, explains. “Our mission is to grant access to capital to small entrepreneurs to help them start their own businesses.”

Mining PoTenTial With the world’s largest reserves of nickel

and the third largest reserves of gold, the Philippines’ mining sector has enormous potential. President Aquino’s government has established mining as a growth priority, and after years of decline, aims to attract investors by pushing through new legislation allowing 100% foreign owned companies to operate in the sector.

Set up in 2003, the Philippine Mining Development Corporation (PMDC) develops mineral reserves, covering all aspects from exploration to production. Ramon J. P. Paje, Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Chairman of the PMDC, says that in line with President Aquino’s fight against poor governance, “there will be full transparency in government transactions. We have directed our mines and geosciences bureau to upload to its website all relevant mining information.”

Mr Paje says that he also wants to strengthen public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the mining industry. “We are taking a much more pro-active approach to PPPs. Through solicited proposals, the government will work with the private sector to develop government assets and exploration activities.”

Environmental issues are also to the fore, he says: “As we improve the investment climate in the Philippines, the government, under the overarching principle of sustainable growth and development, is also upgrading environmental standards in mining.”

TourisM: diversificaTionTourist numbers are also surging thanks to a

recent open-skies agreement. The aim is to more than double the number of arrivals – with the attendant job opportunities – to 10m by 2016. The way to do this, says Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, is through diversification. Long dependent on visitors from the United States, Japan, and Korea, who make up half of all visitors, the Department of Tourism is now looking at the Middle East market. The Philippines hopes to attract more tourists from the region through the “It’s more fun in the Philippines” campaign.

“We aim to tap the high-value Middle East market, considered one of the highest spending travellers in the world,” says Mr Jimenez, pointing out that Qatar Airways will now operate 14 flights weekly between Manila and Doha.

In 2011, the Philippines attracted 55,829 tourists from the Middle East posting a growth rate of 14.60% from 2010 arrivals. The first quarter of 2012 continues to register positive growth at 12.24%. Key travel markets in the region are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar.

Sulficio O. Tagud Jr, President and CEO of 2GO Travel — one of the largest, premier land/sea-travel providers in the Philippines — says that seeing the country’s more than 7,000 islands by ship is the perfect way to get to know the country. “On our long-distance routes that pass by different islands we will provide our guests with information about these locations, such as tourism, culture, and folklore. By doing so, we will sell our country somehow and will show the tourists the wonders of our country.”

Mr Tagud says that the Philippines maritime industry offers considerable potential to investors: “There is still a huge margin for growth for the shipping business. There are certain island crossings where there is no air link. That is where our expansion will be coming from, which connects with the desire of this country to develop into a major tourism destination.”


The Philippines may have found its next sunrise industry in the global medical access field: the country earned $1.30 billion from health care and wellness services between 2006 and 2010. Research suggests the Philippines has the potential to earn as much as $1 billion in additional annual revenue by 2018, dependent on investment in medical infrastructure, facilitating visas for overseas visitors accessing healthcare in the country and through more international marketing.

As Rosalie R. Montenegro, President and CEO of the Makati Medical Center, a leader in the Philippines healthcare sector since the 1960s, points out, the Philippines has long provided medical professionals to the global healthcare sector, and boasts world-class doctors, highly qualified nurses, therapists, and medical technicians.

Makati Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission International, the world’s leading hospital accreditation organization, says Ms Montenegro, adding: “health care providers in the Philippines need to work together more. If we can come together and work together, then we are more likely to be able to influence legislation which will be able to promote the industry. We need a united approach- if we are divided we won’t be able to grow the industry. I also think that some of the best opportunities for growth lie in unchartered territories, such as the retirement industry.”

iT all dePends on infrasTrucTureVisitors returning to the Philippines after

a decade will be struck by the impressive infrastructure work underway in the country’s main cities. President Aquino is inviting private companies to build infrastructure projects, such as airports and light rail systems, through public-private partnerships that bind the government to help ensure investors recover costs and earn minimum returns through user charges or direct government payments.

“With expected aggressive spending from the private sector (residential condominiums and commercial buildings) and the government (infrastructure projects), construction industry is set to sustain its growth rate in the next three years,” says Eric A. Cruz.

Sulficio O. Tagud Jr of 2GO Travel highlights the need for infrastructure development to drive the tourism industry: “If we want to attract foreign tourists to the Philippines, we need to improve the way in which we transfer people from one tourist spot to another.”

Some of the region’s top construction companies are already active in driving the Philippines’ infrastructure growth, such as JGC, one of Japan’s largest engineering and construction companies, and which has been in the Philippines for more than 20 years.

Shigeru Hanajima, JGC Philippines President and CEO, explains that the company provides engineering services, as well as project management, procurement, and construction management, and also facility maintenance. He highlights the low operating costs in the Philippines, and praises the skills levels of Filipino engineers: “We want to lead the engineering sector here: we consider ourselves a Philippines company. We want to develop the Philippines’ infrastructure.”

Companies like freight forwarders GRM International and Pac-Atlantic Group are benefitting from the infrastructure investment. GRM’s President Paul Andre Martires says there is a “growing mood of confidence” within the business community, and praises the work of the Philippines Economic Zone Authority (PEZA): “investors are more confident in investing in PEZA zones because policy stays the same, and because of the transparency this organization demonstrates. This is so important for investors.”

Pac-Atlantic’s Group Managing Director Ramon T. De Leon says the government must press ahead with infrastructure development: “I think infrastructure is the reason Singapore has been so successful. Everything will follow in the next 20 years, and if the economy improves investors will come in and I think the infrastructure will come with it.”

looking To The fuTureThe creation of a Qatar-Philippines

investment fund reflects the increasing presence of Gulf-based investors in Asia, a trend that looks set to continue over the medium term. Around 10-11% of total Gulf outward investment currently heads to Asia, and the figure is expected to increase significantly over the next five years.

Traditionally the Gulf states have aligned themselves closely with the US, for both economic and strategic reasons. But over the longer term the region’s increased interest in Asia is a natural strategic extension of its aims to diversify the nature of its economic activity, and a recognition that future relationships with the leading Asian nations will take on major strategic importance.

Canada is known for its natural beauty and there’s no better way to experience it than on an exclusive, 140 km-long train ride along the shores of the St-Lawrence River. Trains for Baie-Saint-Paul (US$180/per person) and La Malbaie (CA$280/per person) depart from the base of chutes Montmorency, just outside of Québec City, 11 months of the year (May to October, and December to April). Once on board guests are treated to a gourmet breakfast and tapas, or an elaborate four-course meal on the return journey. Prepared by executive chef Patrick Turcot, the meals are a journey in gastronomy;

no matter the season, the menu is made to reflect a variety of local produce and ingredients.

To give you the best views of the region, the train moves at a leisurely pace, offering spectacular views of the river, the historic red-roofed houses on the cliffs, and, in the autumn, the maroons, burnt oranges, and mustards of the surrounding forest’s changing leaves.

Pulling into Baie-Saint-Paul at midday, explore the town at your leisure in the afternoon. Known for its gorgeous setting and artistic heart, Baie-Saint-Paul is the birthplace of Cirque du Soleil and its spirit can still be felt. Stroll along rue Jean-baptiste Paul exploring the town's many galleries and independent shops. Take a piece of Charlevoix home with you in the form of an artwork by one of the many local artists.

Catch the work of emerging Québec artists at the Musée d’Art contemporain de baie-Saint-Paul, featuring the work of some of the country’s best artists. Every August artists from all over the world flock to the town for the Symposium international D’Art contemporain de baie-Saint-Paul (symposium-baiesaintpaul.com), where they create works that the public is invited to participate in and view.

A number of tours are available throughout the town. charlevoix Éco-Mobilité (charlevoixecomobilite.com) will take you on a private bike taxi

tour of the town and its waterways (US$25/hr) as you sit comfortably in the carriage. For those wanting a bit more speed, there’s also a motorcycle option starting at $75/hr.

Héli charlevoix (heli-charlevoix.

com) is perfect for those wanting a birds-eye view of the region. Their helicopter tours start at CA$115 per person and have a range of different tours and packages available.

If you want to get a real feel for the area, however, you have to get out on the water. Whale watching Zodiac tours of the river depart from baie-Sainte-catherine, just north of Baie-Saint-Paul, and are quintessential to a trip to Charlevoix.

In winter, the train makes a stop at the base of Le Massif (massif.com), one of the best ski hills in the country, complete with skill-testing runs and absolutely breathtaking views of the river. After a satisfying day on the slopes, Le Train Le Massif is the perfect place to warm up and relax.

Further up the river you’ll find La Malbaie, the vacation destination for wealthy tourists since the late 1800s. Once drawn exclusively for the salmon fishing, people now come to unwind in the area’s raw beauty and the legendary casino.

Once you’re in Charlevoix, it’s hard to want to leave. Hotel Le ferme gives visitors to Baie-Saint-Paul exactly what they’re looking for. Located next to the train station, this brand-new hotel is part of Gauthier’s grand vision for the area. Called a hotel ‘terroir’, Le Ferme is integrated with the environment. A flock of 50 sheep graze near the grounds, vegetable gardens meet you as you alight the train, and the hotel is heated by geothermal heating.

Though it’s environmentally friendly, it hasn’t given up any of the luxury comforts that guests have come to expect in a hotel. Four buildings offer four different hotel experiences, the most exclusive of which is Le Moulin, which offers seven luxury suites, each with its own private balcony and views of the river.

foUNTAiN of WEALTHThe fountain of Wealth refers to the richness of life – though its location inside Suntec city shopping mall speaks of more earthly desires. The design is based on a Hindu mandala and is in the form of a bronze ring – or some say, the palm of a hand. It’s said that if you walk around the fountain three times while constantly touching the water, you’ll have good fortune. At night, laser performances and music are added to the splashing jets.

TREvi foUNTAiNPerhaps the world’s most famous fountain, the Trevi is backed by a baroque palace and topped with a dramatic sculpture of Neptune, god of the sea, taming the waters. There has been a fountain here since the construction of a Roman aqueduct in 19 BCE, but the current monumental masterpiece is pure 16th-century rococo. Movies and songs celebrate the legend that, if you throw a coin in the fountain, you’re sure to return to Rome. The €3,000 collected daily goes to the Italian Red Cross.

PEoPLE’S fRiENDSHiP foUNTAiNNow standing as a reminder of the vanished USSR, this fountain outside the All-Russian Exhibition centre features 16 enormous gilded statues of citizens in national costume representing the republics that made up the Soviet Union. It sports 800 water jets soaring 24 metres in the air before splashing back into a vast red granite bowl.

MAgic foUNTAiN of MoNTJUicThis fountain on Avenida Maria cristina was constructed in 1929 for the Universal Exhibition, and was restored in the 1980s with the addition of lighting, music, and water effects that appear to make the fountains dance. Thousands turn up on weekend evenings to enjoy the spectacle, which produces 3,620 water jets in 50 colours, some soaring high in the air, and always accompanied by classical or pop music.

Qatar Airways has celebrated yet another milestone with the launch of long-haul boeing 787 Dreamliner services from Doha to London Heathrow. With flights launched midway through last month, Qatar Airways became the first airline to offer regular scheduled flights with the next generation aircraft to and from the Uk.

One of the airline's five daily flights on the Doha – Heathrow route is being operated with the Boeing 787. Flight QR 075 departs Doha at 0625 hrs, arriving at London Heathrow at 1105 hrs, with the return flight QR 076 departing London at 1505 hrs, arriving in Doha at 0045 hrs the following day.

From February 1, passengers from the UK will have an opportunity to fly on one of the most spacious and comfortable aircraft in the skies to Perth all the way on a 787 with a short connection in Doha, when Qatar Airways becomes the first carrier to operate regular scheduled flights to Australia using the next generation aircraft.

Qatar Airways has initiated flights to Warsaw, Poland, representing the airline’s 32nd destination in Europe, and its 12th new destination during 2012.

The Doha–Warsaw route is being operated four times a week, and was announced at Warsaw frederic chopin Airport in the Polish capital during a spirited ceremony that welcomed a delegation from Doha, including Qatar Airways chief Executive officer Akbar Al baker and His Excellency Robert Rostek, Ambassador of Poland to the State of Qatar.

“I believe there are no other countries in this region that are developing so fast and dynamically as Poland is now,” Al Baker said. “That made us confident that Warsaw as a destination will attract many passengers, especially with Poles keen to travel to distant destinations in Asia, Africa, and Australia, which we can provide with our new flights via our Doha hub.

Adding to an already strong portfolio of routes to china, Qatar Airways announced that in March it will begin serving chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in Southwest china.

The service will be Qatar Airways’ sixth gateway in the People’s Republic of China, adding to its current routes from its Doha hub to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Hong Kong.

“China is a market that is growing in stature,” Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said. “Qatar Airways will continue

to tap into opportunities to expand our presence and provide more choice for our passengers travelling on business or leisure to or from China.” Chengdu is one of six new destinations already announced by Qatar Airways for 2013, joining Gassim, Saudi Arabia; Najaf, Iraq; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Chicago, USA; and Salalah, Oman.

في وجهة االنطالق بتأن قبل االنطالق في رحلتك، واالحتفاظ بمحفظة بطاقة الصعود إلى الطائرة

طوال الرحلة وإظهارها لدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي. إذا كان لديك أية أسئلة أو

هل ستتوقف في الدوحة؟

إذا كنت ستتوقف في الدوحة، أو إذا كانت الدوحة وجهتك النهائية،

فستستلم محفظة لبطاقة الصعود إلى الطائرة باللون األزرق إضافة إلى

بطاقة من نفس اللون لحقائب اليد عند قيامك بتسجيل الدخول إلى

رحلتك في وجهة االنطالق. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي،

ستكون بانتظارك حافلة لنقلك إلى مبنى “القادمون إلى الدوحة”. يرجى

االنتباه للنداءات التي تبث على متن الحافلة للتأكد من نزولك منها عند

توقفها أمام مبنى “القادمون إلى الدوحة”. وبالنسبة لركاب الدرجة

األولى ورجال األعمال، فسيتم نقلهم بواسطة حافلة فاخرة أو سيارة

ليموزين خاصة.

تحويل الرحالت لركاب الدرجة األولى ورجال األعمال

إذا كنت مسافرا في الدرجة األولى أو درجة رجال األعمال عبر مطار الدوحة

الدولي وأمامك رحلة ربط إلى وجهة أخرى، فستستلم محفظة لبطاقة الصعود إلى الطائرة باللون العنابي

إضافة إلى بطاقة من نفس اللون لحقائب اليد عند قيامك بتسجيل

الدخول في وجهة االنطالق. وتتيح لك المحفظة العنابية إمكانية الدخول إلى “مبنى البريميم – تحويل

الرحالت” الخاص والتابع للخطوط الجوية القطرية. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي، سيتم نقلك

إلى مبنى “البريميم – تحويل الرحالت” بواسطة حافلة فاخرة أو سيارة

ليموزين خاصة.

A لدى الخطوط الجوية القطرية طلبات شراء ألكثر من 250 طائرة تفوق قيمتها 50 مليار دوالر أمريكي.

إذا كنت مسافرا عبر مطار الدوحة الدولي وأمامك رحلة ربط إلى وجهة

أخرى واستلمت محفظة باللون األخضر وبطاقة من نفس اللون

لحقائب اليد من المطار الذي انطلقت منه. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار

الدوحة الدولي، ستنقلك حافلة إلى مبنى “تحويل الرحالت الملحق”.

يرجى التأكد من الصعود إلى الحافلة المخصصة لنقل الركاب إلى مبنى

بتسجيل الدخول إلى رحلتك في وجهة االنطالق. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي، ستكون بانتظارك حافلة لنقلك إلى مبنى “الرحالت المغادرة والمحولة”. يرجى

االنتباه للنداءات التي تبث على متن الحافلة للتأكد من نزولك منها عند توقفها أمام

مبنى “الرحالت المغادرة والمحولة”. لدى دخولك إلى مبنى “الرحالت المغادرة

تعتبر طائرة إيرباص A330–200 واحدة من طرازين من سلسلة طائرات إيرباص A330 العاملة في أسطول الخطوط الجوية القطرية، ويتميز هيكلها

بأنه أقصر من شقيقتها األطول إيرباص A330–300 التي اشتقت منها، ما يمنحها مدى أطول بحيث تستطيع ربط الدوحة مع لندن وطوكيو. وتم

تطوير سلسلة A330 بالتزامن مع سلسلة A340 رباعية المحركات، والتي نات الهيكل واألجنحة، إضافة إلى تشاطرها اإليرباص A330–200 بعض مكو

تصميم قمرة وأجهزة القيادة. ويولد محركا A330–200 طراز رولز – رويس ترينت 700، قوة دفع تناهز 72.000 رطل )320 كيلونيوتن(، ليمنحاها سرعة

طيران ثابتة تقل قليال عن سرعة الصوت ماخ 1 )0.86(.

مطار الدوحة الدولي

وستسير الخطوط الجوية القطرية على خط الدوحة ـ وارسو 4 رحالت

أسبوعيا، وجرى االحتفال بتدشين رحالت القطرية إلى بولندا خالل حفل استقبال في مطار وارسو

فريدريك شوبان في العاصمة البولندية. وترأس السيد أكبر الباكر،

الرئيس التنفيذي للخطوط الجوية القطرية، وفدا من الدوحة على متن

الرحلة االفتتاحية شمل سعادة السيد روبرت روستيك، سفير

بولندا لدى قطر.

وأعرب الباكر عن تفاؤله بنجاح الرحالت على هذا الخط قائال

»بنظري، ال توجد دولة أخرى في المنطقة تشهد تطورا سريعا

وديناميكيا مثل الذي تشهده بولندا حاليا. ولذلك، نحن على ثقة من

أن وارسو ستستقطب أعدادا كبيرة من المسافرين خاصة وأن الشعب

البولندي يحب السفر إلى وجهات مختلفة في آسيا وإفريقيا وأستراليا

التي نوفر إليها روابط ممتازة عبر مقر عملياتنا في الدوحة.«

عززت الخطوط الجوية القطرية خدماتها الجوية القوية إلى الصين، باعالنها مؤخرا عن إطالق رحالت إلى سادس وجهاتها في جمهورية

الصين الشعبية – تشنغدو – وذلك اعتبارا من 19 مارس 2013.

وتعد تشنغدو سادس وجهة للخطوط الجوية القطرية في جمهورية الصين

الشعبية، وتشمل وجهاتها الحالية بكين وشنغهاي وجوانزو

وتشونغتشينغ وهونغ كونغ.

وتشكل مدينة تشنغدو واحدة من أهم مراكز االستثمار واألعمال في

الصين، كما تعتبر موطنا ألحد أندر الحيوانات في العالم، الباندا العمالقة

التي تعمل على حمايتها من خالل إنشاء عدة محميات داخل المدينة وفي

محيطها مثل محمية سيشوان ولونغ الطبيعية، األكبر من نوعها في العالم،

مما يجعلها وجهة سياحية جذابة.وصرح السيد أكبر الباكر، الرئيس التنفيذي للخطوط الجوية القطرية

“مع نمو سوق الصين باضطراد وتعزيز مكانتها كقوة صناعية

واقتصادية حيوية، سوف تواصل القطرية االستفادة من الفرص المتاحة

لتوسعة حضورها وتوفير خيارات أوسع لركابها من السياح ورجال

االعمال المسافرين إلى ومن الصين.

وتعتبر تشنغدو واحدة من ست وجهات جديدة أكدت القطرية

تدشينهم عام 2013 وتضم الوجهات القصيم في المملكة العربية

السعودية، والنجف في العراق وبنوم بنه في كامبوديا، وشيكاغو في الواليات المتحدة األمريكية وصاللة في سلطنة

عمان.

القطرية تطلق رحالتها إلى سادس وجهاتها

في الصين مارس المقبل

أفعال غير مشروعةوفقا للقانون القطري يعتبر التدخين على متن الطائرة عمال غير مشروع يعاقب عليه القانون بغرامة قدرها

30،000 ريال قطري أي ما يعادل )8،200 دوالر أمريكي( كما يعاقب بغرامة قدرها 100 ألف ريال قطري أي ما

يعادل )27،000 دوالر أمريكي( وبالحبس مدة ال تتجاوز ثالث سنوات أو كال العقوبتين كل من ارتكب فعال من

األفعال التالية: السكر بسبب تناول المشروبات الكحولية، واالعتداء اللفظي أو الجسدي أو التهديد به ضد أفراد طاقم الطائرة أو أحد ركابها أو أي عمل من

شأنه اإلخالل بالسالمة الجوية للطائرة مثل العبث بأجهزة الكشف عن الدخان أو غير ذلك من األجهزة

المتعلقة بالسالمة الجوية الموجودة على متن الطائرة.

الخطوط الجوية القطرية تعتزم تسيير رحالت بين أثينا ونيويورك

بدأت الخطوط الجوية القطرية بتسيير رحالت منتظمة إلى مدينة وارسو البولندية في وسط شرق أوروبا، لتصبح بذلك وجهتها رقم

32 في أوروبا، ووجهتها الجديدة رقم 12 لعام 2012.

في القارة األوروبية

وصرح الباكر “أصبحت أثينا أقوى وجهة متوسطية من حيث عدد

المسافرين إلى مطار أثينا الدولي حيث تخطى العدد للمرة األولى في

تاريخ المطار عدد المسافرين إلى مدينة نيويورك.”

وأضاف “بإطالقنا خط أثينا – نيويورك الجديد ابتداء من منتصف العام

الجاري، سنوفر للمسافرين تجربة سفر فريدة وخيارات أوسع للسفر،

مما سيعزز مكانة القطرية كشركة طيران مفضلة لدى المسافرين من

السياح ورجال األعمال.”

وتعد أثينا إحدى أهم الوجهات التي تصل إليها الناقلة ضمن شبكة

خطوطها األوروبية التي تضم حاليا 32 وجهة. وقد تم إطالق خط أثينا عام

2004 بمعدل ست رحالت أسبوعيا حينها، وارتفع هذا العدد قبل ثالث

سنوات إلى رحلتين يوميا.

احتفاال بمرور ثماني سنوات على إطالق رحالت الخطوط الجوية

القطرية إلى اليونان، أعلن السيد أكبر الباكر، الرئيس التنفيذي للخطوط الجوية القطرية، عن اعتزام القطرية تسيير رحالت

مباشرة بين أثينا ونيويورك اعتبارا من منتصف عام 2013.

واعتبارا من األول من فبراير 2013، سيتمكن الركاب من المملكة المتحدة من السفر إلى بيرث في أستراليا على

متن طائرة 787 التي تعتبر إحدى أكثر طائرات الركاب راحة ورحابة في األجواء اليوم، مع فترة توقف بسيطة في

الدوحة، حيث ستصبح الناقلة أول شركة طيران تسير طائرة دريمالينر إلى أستراليا.

تعمل الطائرة على إحدى الرحالت الخمس التي تسيرها الناقلة يوميا بين الدوحة ولندن هيثرو، وهي

رحلة رقم QR075 التي تغادر الدوحة في الساعة 0625 صباحا وتصل إلى لندن هيثرو الساعة 1105، وتغادر

لندن في رحلة العودة رقم QR076 في الساعة 1505 وتصل إلى الدوحة الساعة 0045 من اليوم التالي.

من أكثر أحياء مقاطعة كولومبيا شهرة هو المنطقة المحاذية لشارع 14، حيث يشهد

هذا الحي افتتاح مطعم جديد كل شهر تقريبا. وما عليك سوى أن على طول

الشارع لتجد كل ما تشتهيه نفسك وتلذ به عيناك من لفائف التورتيا إلى المحار وانتهاء

بالمقاهي األنيسة. على سبيل المثال، ستجد لدى مطعم »إستاديو« أطباق

م مع المشاريب مقبالت إسبانية أصيلة تقدالمحضرة في المنزل، أما »برل دايف أويستر باالس« فمتخصص بمطبخ

الواليات األمريكية الجنوبية لكن مع إضافة لمساته الخاصة غير اعتيادية )تخيل نفسك

مثال تتناول المحار على نصف صدفة مع تتبيلة لذيذة وطبق »إتوفيه« بالروبيان!(. وأخيرا إياك أن تفوت على نفسك تذوق

أطباق »ماال« الحارة لدى مطعم »غريت وول سيشوان هاوس« ذي المظهر

المتواضع المخادع الذي ال يبوح بروعة مذاق أطباقه.

متعة تناول الطعام في

متاحف العاصمة

هناك طريقة أخرى ممتعة لتجربة شتى أنواع المطابخ

القومية تتمثل في زيارة المتاحف: ففي »مقهى الحديقة الخاصة بصالة

العرض الوطنية«، تتغير قائمة الطعام بتغير

المعروضات. كما يمكن احتساء الشاي الروسي

لدى »متحف وحدائق هل ود إستيت«.وال بد من تجربة تناول الطعام لدى

»مقهى ميتسيتام« في »المتحف الوطني للهنود األمريكان«، حيث توجد

خمسة منافذ لبيع الطعام، كل منها يعرض

تخصصات محلية، كالخبز التقليدي المقلي وخبز

»توتوبو« المسطح المصنوع من الذرة.

لكنه قلما يكون متقنا، وفق تشيتوم. فهناك ثالثة أماكن تجيد فعل ذلك

هي: مطعم »فيوال« )ننصحكم بتناول جبنة »البوراتا« لديه بصلصة »بيستو«

بندورة سان مارتسانو والحبق(، ومطعم »بيبيانا« ومطعم »بالينا« )المطعم المفضل لدى تشيتوم(.

أما إذا كنت من هواة المطبخ اليوناني تحديدا، فعليك بمطعم »غريك دلي

أند كيترينغ« في منطقة دبونت سركل )من أفضل أطباقه حساء

»آفغوليمونو«( أو مطعم »زيتينا« لترجمة عصرية للمطبخ اليوناني.

وفي أوقات فراغ الشيف تشيتوم، كثيرا ما تسوقه قدماه إلى مطعم

»راسيكا«، وهو مطعم هندي معاصر مشهور بمأكوالت »تاوا« المحضرة

على الصاج ومشويات »سيغري« وأطباق »التندوري«. أما طبق »باالك

تشات«، والذي هو عبارة عن توليفة من السبانخ )المقرمش( واللبن والتمر الهندي والتمر العادي،

فهو محط إعجاب الجميع. وفي حال لم تكن مطلعا على أي من هذه األطباق،

دع النادل الذي يخدمك يتولى نصحك واقتراح ما يناسبك. وتعليقا على ذلك،

يقول آشوك بجاج، مالك المطعم: »نتمتع بفريق عمل على دراية واسعة

بما نقدمه، وعليه فمن الحكمة طرح الكثير من األسئلة عليهم فيما يتعلق

بالتوابل أو المكونات غير المألوفة. احرص على إبالغ النوادل إن كنت تعاني

من أي حساسية تجاه أطعمة معينة أو ال تستمتع بأكل التوابل الفاقعة

اللون أو الحارة.

ال شك أن المطاعم الصغيرة المملوكة من قبل عائالت تقدم أطباقا

أصيلة وشهية، لكن بالمقابل من الصعب تجاهل المطاعم العصرية

الراقية المتخصصة في مطابخ بعينها. خذ مثال مطعم »ذا سورس«... يقدم هذا المطعم الصيني العصري الذي

يديره كبير الطهاة سكوت درونو بعض أفضل أنواع الزالبيات المتاحة

في المدينة. ويقول الشيف درونو عن تجربته في المطعم: »عندما افتتحنا

المطعم قبل خمس سنوات، كان الجميع يطلب الخبز، إذ كان هذا ما يتوقعونه من مطعم يقدم مأكوالت راقية. لكننا قدمنا لهم فوال أخضرا

منقوعا بصلصة فول الصويا والفلفل الحار. وكانت المسألة تعتبر تحديا في

البداية، لكن الناس أخذوا يجربون أطباقا جديدة شيئا فشيئا«. أما اليوم

فإن مطعم »ذا سورس« معروف بأكواز »آهي« المحضرة من لحم

التونا، وكذلك بطبق البط المدهون بالعسل. أما عندما ال يكون درونو

مشغوال بتحضير الطعام فتجده لدى مطعم »مينغز« الواقع في »تشاينا تاون« )الركن الصيني من المدينة(.

وفي »تشاينا تاون« هناك كذلك مطعم »نيو بيغ ونغ« الذي يعتبر من

المطاعم المفضلة لدى كثيرين.

أما الشيف آنتوني تشيتوم فقد أدرك هو اآلخر التنوع المتزايد في مقاطعة

يصادف هذا الشهر التنصيب الرئاسي الخامس والسبعين في الواليات

المتحدة. وإذا كنا نريد استيعاب أهمية ذلك، ما علينا سوى أن نتذكر

أنه في يوم التنصيب الرئاسي لعام 2008 تدفق قرابة مليوني شخص على

واشنطن العاصمة ليشهدوا تولي أول رئيس أمريكي من أصل أفريقي

لمنصب الرئاسة... فكان البد للعاصمة األمريكية أن تكون مهيأة

الستضافة كل تلك الحشود وتوفير الخدمات السياحية لها، وإطعامها

كذلك. وبالنظر إلى الشوط الطويل الذي قطعته مقاطعة كولومبيا خالل

العقد األخير، عندما لم يكن فيها سوى حفنة من المطاعم ال تقدم

شيئا سوى شرائح اللحم والبطاطا، يتضح لنا كيف أصبحت العاصمة وجهة عالمية لالستمتاع بالطعام.

بداية، هناك أكثر من 160 سفارة أجنبية في المدينة، فضال عن أن

13,5% من سكان مقاطعة كولومبيا هم من مواليد دول أجنبية. وبما أن

الجميع يحب تناول طعام بالده، فإنهم يجلبون طعامهم معهم. هل تبحث

عن مطعم بيروفي يقدم الدجاج المحضر بطريقة »روتيسيري«؟

جرب مطعم »إل بولو ريكو« في آرلينغتون بوالية فيرجينيا. ما رأيك

بطبق »سيفيتشه« البحري؟ عليك بمطعم »ال ليمينيا« في روكفيل بوالية

ماريالند. باختصار... لم تكن تجربة اختيار مكان لتناول الطعام أكثر إثارة وتشويقا مما هي عليه اآلن، فصحيح

أن مدنا أخرى تضم أحياء أكبر لجاليات من أصول واحدة، إال أن واشنطن

تتمتع بالتنوع، بل وبالتخصص. حيث تجد مطابخ فرعية للقوميات

المختلفة ضمن مطابخ رئيسية لها. إذ تستطيع بال أدنى شك تناول

الطعام اآلسيوي لدى مطعم »أيجا ناين«، لكن لم التوقف عند هذا الحد؟

اتخذ مقعدك عند طاولة بمطعم »توكي أندرغراوند« لالستمتاع بطبق

نودلز »رامن« الياباني، أو بمطعم »سوشي تارو« لتناول السوشي

الطازج للغاية، أو بمطعم »ليتل سيرو« لالستمتاع بالمطبخ التايالندي

الشمالي الشرقي المحضر بالطريقة المنزلية والذي سيجعل عيناك

تدمعان من شدة الحر.

لكن هذا ال يعني أنه ال وجود ألحياء داخلية لجاليات بعينها في المنطقة.

وما يثير االهتمام أن معظم أحياء

الجاليات تقع في ضواحي مقاطعة كولومبيا )زر مثال مطعم »آر أند آر

تاكويريا« في إلكريدج بوالية ماريالند لالستمتاع بطبق »تاكو« ذي نكهة قوية أصيلة(، لكنك إن توجهت إلى

الشارع التاسع وشارع »يو«، فستجد نفسك في »إثيوبيا الصغيرة«. بل أن

ما تضمه مقاطعة كولومبيا من مطاعم إثيوبية هو أكثر مما تضمه أي

مدينة أخرى خارج أفريقيا. ما رأيك بتناول خبز »اإلنجيرا« )خبز أثيوبي

مسطح إسفنجي القوام بعض الشيء( واغرف به يخنة »وات« اللذيذة

المحضرة من اللحم والبقول والمتبلة بالفلفل األحمر وتوابل أخرى؟ جرب مطعم »دوكيم«، المطعم اإلثيوبي المفضل عند كثير من الناس. هنا

م الوجبات بثالثة مستويات: لطيف تقدومتوسط الحر وحار. كما يمكنك تجربة مطعم »إثيوبيك«، حيث ال شيء يعلو على طبق العينات من

الوجبات النباتية. ثم هناك »هابيشا ماركت«، الذي يستقبل زبائنه للفطور

والغداء والعشاء. إن أجواء هذا المطعم الشبيهة بالكافيتريات تدعوك

لالسترخاء، لكن قهوة اإلسبريسو ونكهات الوجبات التي تقدم فيه

ستثيرك من جديد.

»باكيرا بيريه«. ففي حين يتم انتقاد بعض منتجعات التزلج لعدم دقتها في تحديد طول منحدراتها الثلجية، يشتهر منتجع »باكيرا بيريه« بدقته البالغة في تحديدها بفارق ال

يتجاوز 10 سنتيمترات.

تستطيع شبكة مصاعد منتجع »باكيرا بيريه« الكبيرة والتي تضم 33 مصعدا، نقل أكثر

من 56،000 شخص في الساعة صعودا وهبوطا فوق

المنحدرات. وتضم تلك الشبكة 10 مقاعد صاعدة ومقصورات قة فائقة السرعة، تضمن معل

رحلة مريحة وسريعة.

الزرقاء الشخصية حول المنحدرات، والتي تستغرق

نحو 3 ساعات و49 دقيقة بسرعة يبلغ معدلها 280 مترا في الدقيقة )باستثناء فترات

االنتظار لركوب المصاعد(.

تعتري الكثيرون الدهشة حين يعلمون أنه من الممكن التزلج على الثلج في إسبانيا الحارة والمشمسة

أصال. إال أنه على غرار الكثير من البلدان ذات المناخ الحار بما فيها قبرص والجزائر ولبنان والمغرب، فان جبال إسبانيا الشاهقة مكللة

بالثلوج على مدار العام، وتضم 30 للتزلج. منطقة

وتقع نحو نصف مناطق التزلج في إسبانيا في جبال البرانس، كبرى

السالسل الجبلية اإلسبانية والتي تمتد من منطقة قريبة من مدينة

برشلونة لمسافة 500 كيلومتر شمالي البالد. وتشكل تلك السلسلة

حدود إسبانيا الشرقية مع فرنسا التي تقع على الجانب اآلخر منها،

وتتوسط الدولتين إمارة »أندورا« الخالية من الضرائب.

ويعتبر »باكيرا بيريه« أشهر منتجعات التزلج اإلسبانية على اإلطالق،

واعتمده ملك إسبانيا منتجعا رسميا للعائلة المالكة، حيث يقضي عطالت

منتظمة فيه مع أفراد أسرته.

وأسس المنتجع بطل التزلج اإلسباني »لويس أرياس« عام 1964، وقال أنه

اختار موقع المنتجع بغية االستفادة من انكشافه على الغيوم الثقيلة

المحملة بالثلوج القادمة من المحيط األطلسي. وأخد أرياس بعين االعتبار

تشييد المنتجع من األخشاب والحجارة في الوقت الذي استخدمت فيه الخرسانة المسلحة لبناء معظم

المنتجعات األوروبية األخرى والمستوحاة من طراز مدرسة

العمارة »باوهاوس« األلمانية المستطيلة. ومنذ ذلك الحين انتقل المنتجع من قوة إلى قوة ونما ليصبح أكبر منتجع تزلج مستقل في البالد،

ويضم حاليا 120 كيلومترا من منحدرات التزلج.

لكن الحجم ليس السبب الوحيد لشهرة هذا المنتجع، ألن المبتدئين

في التزلج يحبونه بسبب منحدراته المعتدلة التي تصلح لممارستهم

التزلج الخالي من المخاطر. ويستطيع المتزلجون الهواة االستمتاع بالتزلج على المنحدرات التي تغمرها أشعة الشمس، والتوقف الحتساء القهوة

الساخنة في أحد المطاعم الجبلية

قد تشهد جبال البرانس اإلسبانية هطول ثلوج أغزر وأيام مشمسة أكثر

من جبال األلب والروكي، لذا ليس من المستغرب أن تعتمد األسرة

المالكة اإلسبانية منتجع عطالت التزلج “باكيرا بيريه”، منتجعا رسميا لها.

عندما يتعلق األمر بوجهات التزلج األوروبية، يفكر معظم الناس تلقائيا بجبال األلب. ومع ذلك، يبقى اسم منتجع “باكيرا بيريه” في جبال

البرانس اإلسبانية متوهجا كأحد أبرز منتجعات التزلج في القارة األوروبية.

العشرين المنتشرة على مساراتها. وفي الوقت ذاته، تستقطب

المنحدرات الوعرة المحيطة بالمنتجع المتزلجين المخضرمين من شتى

أنحاء العالم، وتتيح لهم فرصة التزلج فوق مسارات طويلة ومكسوة بثلوج

هطلت حديثا عبر براري وادي »آران« الجميل.

بوا التزلج فوق منحدر »لويس جرأرياس بالك« الذي يستمد اسمه من

المتزلج األسطوري الذي تحدى المخاطر الهائلة وتزلج فوق

المنحدرات الواقعة بين منتجعي »باكيرا بيريه« و«بونايجوا«، بما فيها

المنحدر فائق الخطورة »كولوار إيكورناكرابس« أي »حيث تتساقط

الماعز«.

رحلة السفاري الثلجية حين تقيمون في المنتجع،

فإن أفضل طريقة للتعرف إلى منحدراته هي التزلج فوق أحد

المنحدرات التي تختارونها مهتدين بالتوجيهات والمسارات المنشورة

في الموقع اإللكتروني للمنتجع www.baqueira.es. وتتيح االستفادة

من المعلومات المحلية والمسافات

المحددة بدقة بالغة لكل منحدر في الموقع اإللكتروني، للمتزلج تقدير

الوقت الذي سوف تستغرقه رحلته تبعا لمدى ازدحام المنحدر

بالمتزلجين.

ما بعد التزلجرغم أن القليلين من اإلسبان

يستفيدون من قيلولة الظهيرة لدى استمتاعهم بعطالت التزلج، إال أنهم

يلتزمون بالتقليد الوطني لتناول العشاء في وقت متأخر من الليل.

وفي الوقت الذي تكون فيه أجواء فترة ما بعد التزلج صاخبة عند قاعدة

سفوح جبال األلب حوالي الساعة الثالثة بعد الظهر، ال يشتد اإلقبال

على مطاعم منتجع “باكيرا بيريه” إال نحو الساعة الثامنة ليال.

ويتجه معظم ضيوف المنتجع إلى مطاعم التابا الكثيرة التي تقدم أشهى

مأكوالت المطبخ المحلي والتي تتصدر ناتها لحوم األغنام واألرانب وطرائد مكو

الصيد. ومن المطاعم يقدم مطعم »إسكيرو« الريفي تشكيلة رائعة من

أطباق المنطقة أمثال شرائح لحم خاصرة األبقار الطرية مع الفلفل

األخضر، كما يتخصص مطعم »ال

وإذا كنتم من عشاق الكافيار، فال بد من زيارة هذا المنتجع في شهر

مارس الذي يحتفل فيه سكان وادي »آران« بمهرجان شهر الكافيار

السنوي. كما أن المأكوالت البحرية لة على مدار موسم التزلج، هي المفض

حيث يقبل الناس على تناول القشريات البحرية التي يتم شراؤها

من سواحل منطقة »جاليسيا« بصفة خاصة، إضافة إلى أطباق محار اإلوز

القطبي »بيرسيبيس« الكبير والمشهور محليا.

بسهولة، حيث يعيشون في بوتقة تنصهر فيها لهجة “أرانس” المحلية

مع لغة إقليم كاتالونيا واللغتين الفرنسية واإلسبانية.

أفضل من جبال األلبيعني وجود منتجع “باكيرا

بيريه” على خط عرض جنوبي أنه يتيح الفرصة

للتزلج كل يوم لمدة أطول مما تتيحه جبال األلب، حيث يستمر النهار فيه

ساعة أكثر في فصل الربيع، ويكون الطقس أكثر دفئا عادة. وال يمثل استمرار الكسوة الثلجية أية مشكلة نظرا لمواجهة

المنحدرات للشمال أو الشمال الغربي، وارتفاعها

لغاية 2510 أمتار فوق سطح البحر. كما أن كثرة

المنحدرات وشبكة المصاعد المريحة فائقة

الحداثة والسرعة، تجعالن من التنقل في المنطقة

أمرا في غاية السهولة والسرعة.

نافورة تريفيتحفة فنية وتاريخية رائعة، وربما أجمل وأشهر نافورة في العالم.

شيدت بخلفية بديعة لقصر من طراز الباروك ويتوسطها تمثال

أسطوري لنيبتون إله البحر، وهو يكبح جماح البحر بشكل رمزي

وتعتبر موقعا رائعا ومثاليا لتصوير العديد من أفالم السينما وأغاني

الفيديو كليب. ومن األساطير التي تروى حول نافورة تريفي أن كل من

يلقي بداخلها قطعة من النقود المعدنية، ال بد وأن يعود لزيارة روما مرة أخرى. ويبلغ متوسط

مجموع النقود التي تجمع يوميا من النافورة 3000 يورو تذهب

إلى الصليب األحمر اإليطالي.

من العناصر الجمالية وتشمل اإلضاءة الملونة والموسيقى

والمياه المتراقصة. ويتدفق اآلالف من سكان برشلونة خالل أمسيات

وسيصبح مطار الدوحة الدولي الجديد لدى اكتمال بنائه وافتتاحه المقر

الرئيسي للخطوط الجوية القطرية. ويعتبر المطار الجديد الذي بلغت تكلفة

بناءه 14.5 مليار دوالر أمريكي، إضافة هامة وحيوية للبنى التحتية للبالد.
