The Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) is a private, not-for-profit membership association of Americans and Japanese who desire to bring the Japanese and American communities together, promote goodwill through the sharing of knowledge about Japan, and provide a forum for informed discussion regarding the Japan-U.S. relationship. Established in 1997, JASCO is a member of the National Association of Japan-America Societies, headquartered in Washington D.C., which includes 37 Japan-America societies in North America.

Japan and Ohio In the past several decades, we have seen substantial growth in the relationship between Japan and Ohio. It is a long-standing history, reaching back in time. Ohio-born President and First Lady Taft’s planting of cherry trees in Washington, D.C. in 1912, was an outgrowth of their 1905 visit to Japan. In 2012, as the centennial celebration of the Gift of Trees, the Japanese government donated 20 cherry trees to Columbus, Ohio. Even further back, Professor Thomas Mendenhall, one of the first faculty at The Ohio State University, traveled to Japan in 1878 as a visiting professor to the University of Tokyo. Today, these early connections have blossomed into a thriving connection embodied in the Honda Marysville complex, a Sister-State relationship with Saitama Prefecture, artistic and educational exchanges, and the teaching of Japanese in local schools and universities. Japan continues as the top foreign investor in Ohio, offering more jobs in the state than any other Midwest states.
