The Ship of The Year 2015 award goesto sister car ferries, Izumi and Hibiki

The Japan Society of Naval Archi-tects and Ocean Engineers (JAS-NAOE) holds a yearly competition tocommend Japanese-built ships no-table with technical, aesthetic and so-cial aspects, and has selected sevencandidate vessels for this year’saward, the 26th such commendationsince its start.

The society’s meetings to decide onand announce the choice for the Shipof The Year 2015 award were held onTuesday, May 31, and selected the sis-ter car ferries IZUMI and HIBIKI.

On the same occasion, Japan’s firstLNG-fired tugboat SAKIGAKE wasawarded a special technical prize, anddivisional category awards were givento the MILLAU BRIDGE (largecargoship category), the NATORI(small cargoship category) and the

KOYO MARUNO. 88 (fishingboat/work vesselcategory).

The prize giv-ing ceremonywas held onThursday, July 7as a joint eventby three maritime technical societiesincluding The Japan Institute of Ma-rine Engineering (the Marine Engi-neering of the Year award) and theJapan Institute of Navigation (Con-tribution to Navigation award) in ad-dition to JASNAOE).

The car ferries are among the big-gest in cargo capacity in the fleet en-

gaged in Seto Inland Sea services andhave achieved over 20% energy sav-ing with their many fuel efficiency fea-tures. The new ferries are expected tomake important contributions to en-vironmental load reduction and devel-opment of the regional economy. Japan’s first LNG-fired tugboatSAKIGAKE is powered by a dual fuelengine system. When running onLNG, the environmentally friendlyvessel’s CO2, NOx and SOx emissionsare lower than when burning heavyoil by about 30%, 80% and 100%, re-spectively. The tugboat was built byKeihin Dock Co., Ltd. for NipponYusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line).

This is the first vessel of the 14,000-TEU class mega-containership seriesembodying advanced technical fea-tures. Particular attention is paid tosafety, even more than required byofficial rules applicable to the use ofhigh tensile steel plates. This ship was

The vessel has a bulbous bow struc-ture, the first to be used for acontainership, to enhance fuel effi-ciency by reducing the wind pressureresistance from ahead. The wheel-house and living accommodations arealso arranged toward the bow for

greater cargo loading efficiency. Theengine room uses an advanced shipsafety management system that al-lows 24-hour remote monitoring fromashore to prevent serious troubles.Kyokuyo Shipyard Co., Ltd. built thevessel for Imoto Lines, Ltd.

Fishing Boat/Work VesselKOYO MARU NO. 88

The KOYO MARU NO. 88 is anocean round haul netter embodyingmany remarkable new technologies.

The state-of-the-art main engine shaftgenerator, power management sys-tem, and most up-to-date fishing sys-tem make the fishing boat far moreadvanced than earlier similar vesselsin safety, operating efficiency (laborsaving) and energy efficiency. NiigataShipbuilding & Repair Inc. built thevessel for Tokai Fishery Co., Ltd.

Japan Marine United Corporation(JMU) delivered an 182,000DWT bulkcarrier at its Tsu Shipyard on April20, 2016. This is the 14th vessel of the“G-Series” of Dunkirkmax bulk car-rier, called G182BC. JMU previouslybuilt the G-Series New-castlemax andPanamax bulk carriers, and this

JMU completes G-Series Dunkirkmax bulk carrier, CHOULLYG182BC is the third ship type of theG-Series.

The G182BC type has succeededin drastically decreasing fuel oil con-sumption by using various and com-prehensive measures for energy-sav-ing, and the Energy Efficiency DesignIndex (EEDI) is much improved.

The G182BCtype has been de-veloped based onthe expertise andvast experience ofJMU. SSD (SuperStream Duct) andSurf-Bulb (RudderFin with Bulb)equipped fore andaft of the propeller,respectively, muchimprove the pro-

pulsion performance. Furthermore,the unique bow shape of LEADGEBow can decrease additional resis-tance in waves, and well-refined shapeof the superstructure has low wind re-sistance.

In addition, the low level EEDI,ballast water treatment system, andcompliance with the MARPOL NOx

Kawasaki delivers LNG carrier, LNG FUKUROKUJUKawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.

has delivered the LNG carrier, LNGFUKUROKUJU (HN: 1712), to TheKansai Electric Power Co., Inc. andMitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. on June 17,2016.

The LNG FUKUROKUJU is theMoss-type LNG carrier with almostthe same hull size with that of the ex-isting 147,000m3 type LNG carriers,enabling good ship-shore compatibil-ity with major LNG terminalsthroughout the world, but also allow-ing passage through the New PanamaCanal.

The cargo tank capacity of LNGFUKUROKUJU is greater by morethan 17,700m3 from that of the exist-ing 147,000m3 type LNG carriers. Theship features a fully optimized hullstructure for lighter weight, as wellas a hull shape that is optimized forthe maximum propulsive perfor-mance.

The Kawasaki Advanced ReheatTurbine Plant (Kawasaki URA Plant),which was developed specially forLNG carriers, improves fuel consump-tion by approximately 25% comparedwith conventional steam turbine

plants. The LNG FUKUROKUJU isthe third ship equipped the KawasakiAdvanced Reheat Turbine Plant (Ka-wasaki URA Plant).Other features include:- This vessel features four Moss-type

spherical LNG tanks that add upto a total capacity of 165,134m3.The LNG tanks use the KawasakiPanel System, a high-performanceinsulation system developed byKawasaki that keeps the boil-offrate to no more than 0.08% per day.

- The cargo holds housing the LNGtanks employ a double-hull and adouble-bottom structure to protectthe tanks from damage in the caseof an accident.

- The wheelhouse is equipped withstate-of-the-art, nautical equip-ment and as a t e l l i t ecommunica-tion system,and all infor-mation need-ed for navigat-ing the ship isdisplayed onmonitors onthe integratedbridge console

to enable safe and efficient shiphandling. In addition, the wheel-house has windows on all sides togive the operators a 360-degreeview.

Sanoyas completes Panamax bulker, SPRING PROGRESS

Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.delivered the CORATO, a 81,677DWTbulk carrier, to Telford Shipping Lim-ited at its Imari Shipyard & Workson April 5, 2016. This is the first ves-sel of the newly developed 82,000DWTtype bulk carrier. The vessel has fol-lowing features:

The CORATO is designed for car-rying grain, coal, iron ore, etc. as a bulkcarrier with the maximized loadingcapacity and compliant with commonstructural rule,

High propulsion performance andreduction of fuel oil consumption are

Large-capacity ballast pumps andindependent ballast stripping line areprovided to improve ballasting anddeballasting performance. The vesselhas several types of holding tanks tosatisfy the port regulations and for themanagement of discharging gray wa-ter, sewage, bilge water after cargohold cleaning, etc.

For environmental safety, the ves-sel uses the mainengine and gen-erator enginecompliant withthe Annex VI ofMARPOL 73/78regulations to re-duce NOx emis-sions. The cen-tralized fresh wa-ter cooling sys-

tem is adopted for the machineryspace equipment to ease maintenance.

The ballast water treatment sys-tem is used to control the quality ofballast water for protection of marineenvironment prior to enforcement ofthe International Convention for theControl and Management of Ships’Ballast Water and Sediments. Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corporationhas completed construction of theSPRING PROGRESS, a Panamaxbulk carrier, at the Sanoyas Mi-zushima Shipyard. The vessel is theseventh of the 82,000DWT typePanamax bulk carrier series devel-oped by Sanoyas.

The cargo hold capacity of this se-ries is larger than those of previousversions of Sanoyas, and the fuel con-sumption is also slashed by 10% com-pared with the 83,000DWT type thathas demonstrated 10% lower fuel con-sumption than the conventional Sano-yas types.

The vessel achieves Phase 2 levelof EEDI (Energy Efficiency DesignIndex: CO2 emission (grams) per ton(cargo)/nautical mile) regulation thatwill apply to shipbuilding contract hasbeen placed on or after January 1,2013.

For improvement of propulsion ef-ficiency, the vessel is equipped withthe low-speed and long-stroke and

electronically-controlled main enginecombined with a high-efficiency pro-peller and associated energy savingdevices such as Sanoyas developedSTF (Sanoyas-Tandem-Fin (patent):max. 6% energy saving) on stern shelland highly efficient appendages on therudder, which also contribute to thereduction of CO2 emission.

Various eco-friendly features suchas the main engine compliant with theNOx emission Tier II limit for preven-tion of air pollution, and the BallastWater Treatment System and fuel oiltank protection for the protection ofthe marine envi-ronment are incor-porated. In addi-tion, independentholding tanks foraccommodationdischarges, dirtyhold bilge andrainwater on up-per deck are pro-vided.
