  • PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

We are proud to have our sixth issue of Jaycee Herald. We are

really happy to unearth the hidden talents of our jaycee

members. I request all the members to keep contributing and

we can make this small bulletin a worthwhile read.

    Through the month.

April is the starting of summer vacation and it is a big relief to

both parents and children who had to undergo rigorous exam

    time in March.

I can definitely say that the stress and strain that todays

children undergo was never heard of in our time. Exams were a

quarterly affair and study holidays were enough to complete

our exam preparation. Also, we used to have more outdoor

activities compared to the present inclination of children to

remain indoors in front of video games, television or

computers. We too encourage our children to remain indoor for

    safety reasons.

This month we had two flagship programs The kids summer

camp Dingiri Pattalam with JC Antony as the Program

Director received much appreciation for the quality of

programmes it delivered. Participants thoroughly enjoyed the

two day event organized in Rotary hall and I believe this will

surely inspire such activities in the coming years.

We associated with Loongs Cricket Academy to provide

summer cricket coaching camp for children from the age of 6

to 19. Former Kerala Ranji Trophy Captain, Mr. Sony

  • Cheruvathoor inaugurated the camp and more than 300

participants registered for this month long event. Special

Greetings to JC Tony, JC Giri, JC Benjamin and JC Manoj KV.

JCI Trichur also took part in Jc Sanoj Vasudevans dream

project of Short Film making. JC Shajan, JC Sudhir & JC Ajay

took great efforts in the making of this short film. The shooting

is over and post production activities are in its final stages. We

hope this will be a new beginning for all concerned and may

this be the start for much bigger things.

One day after a high tide lots of sea-stars were brought to the

shore. They started drying up in the sun. A boy, walking down

the shore started throwing the sea-stars into the sea, so that

    they could continue their lives.

A person came up to him and asked:

Why are you doing this? Look around! There are millions of

sea-stars; the shore is covered with them. Your attempts wont

    change anything!

The boy picked up a sea-star, thought for a moment, threw it

    into the sea and said:

No, my attempt will change a lotfor this sea-star.

Similarly Let us make a small difference in someones lives..

Enjoy your vacation, Live and Celebrate today.

    Thanking you,

    Yours truly

Book Review -JCI Sen. Ranjith Kollannur

Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons

Publisher DC Comics; Year of Publication 1987; Pages 424

What if, for the greater good of humanity and by extension the

world, we have to sacrifice the lives of a million human beings to

save another billion lives? It is not an easy question to answer for

it most certainly will bring to mind Hitler and his blitzkrieg as he

killed many for the greater good of his people. But then you

think of the Indian armed forces where we have over million

people sworn to defend the remaining one billion with their lives.

Not an easy question to answer, correct?

Watchmen is one of the most well known graphic novels ever

written, by Alan Moore in the eighties. The novel is about a group

of costumed superheroes without superpowers, but not like

Batman and Ironman who use their immense wealth to make

them super. One is a good detective with a good instinct for

crime, though slightly psychotic in character (Rorschach), another

is just super smart but then he decided to retire young and

become rich instead (Ozymandias), another merely following her

mothers footsteps (Silk Spectre) and then there is the Nite Owl,

  • who has one totally rad ride shaped in the form of an owl, but

thats pretty much it. There were more, but somebody is killing

    them off one by one.

Set in the 1980s at the height of the Cold War, the nuclear race is

very much on and so is nuclear armament. War is certain had it

not been for the presence of another super hero, Dr. Manhattan,

who has the power to change even matter. Rorschach is hell bent

on finding who is killing all the super heroes and as his

investigation progressed, it becomes apparent that the killer

plans to get rid of Dr. Manhattan as well, plunging the world into

an extinction threatening world war. It is up to Rorschach, Nite

Owl and Silk Spectre to unravel the conspiracy before the entire

    world is doomed.

The novel explores each of its super hero characters deeply,

especially Rorschach whose psychotic paranoia is intensely

studied. Under the Hood, one of the eleven articles added to

supplement the novel, written by one of the super heroes in the

novel, is a story of inspiration and identifies why he chose to

become a masked vigilante. There is also a story within the story,

Tales of the Black Freighter, a comic book with a very dark theme

of gore and murder, apparently meant to impress the children of

    the Watchmen universe.

The book can form a reality check for a world that has seen an

overdose of superhero movies lately. How would the world

perceive an everyday man who dons the mask to fight injustice in

society? Would they be accepted and commended or hunted

down like the criminals they chase? But then there is also another

even more disturbing thought Who watches the watchmen?
