The central feature in this issue of the JEC magazine provides an overview of the Jardine Engineering Corporation’s historical contributions and current capabilities in the realm of railway infrastructure in Asia. There are a number of exciting developments currently underway within the rail sector - both in Hong Kong and in the other markets that we serve, and we hope to apply our experience and knowledge in support of these projects over the coming years.

Aside from the rail sector, there are a number of other sectors which JEC considers to be core to its activities. The inside cover of this magazine articulates the core JEC offer of products, services and contracting, as they apply to our focal sectors of buildings, environmental infrastructure, transportation as well as power and energy. Combined with our core values, I hope that this provides a clear picture of who we are, how we operate, and where we put our focus.

Elsewhere in this edition you will find articles relating to our investment in the communities that we serve. We have recently concluded the fourth year of the JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Award (OEPA), and have assessed a number of excellent submissions from the next generation of Hong Kong engineers. I would like to congratulate all 32 teams who participated in this year’s OEPA, and particularly to the winning team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with their intelligent home automation project.

本期怡和機器雜誌的特寫將向您介紹怡和機器公司在亞洲鐵路設施建設領域的歷史貢獻及現有實力。目前，我們服務的香港及其他市場的鐵路行業正經歷激動人心的快速發展，我們希望在未來能夠運用本公司的經驗及知識為這些項目提供支援。

NEWSJEC Philippines’ Inaugural Friendly Partners Cup菲律賓怡和機器首屆業務夥伴盃

On 23rd May 2009, JEC Philippines successfully organised the first JEC Partners Cup Tournament, which was held at Centro Atletico, Cubao Quezon City in the Philippines. This was JEC Philippines’ first organised sports-related event. It was aimed at reinforcing a good relationship and trust between customers, suppliers, and other partners.

The badminton tournament was a great success, and was made possible by the support of friends, suppliers and the major sponsor, Midea International. A total of 23 companies from different business sectors and industries participated in the event.

A parade of players officially marked the beginning of the tournament. Mr Guenter Taus, General Manager of JEC Philippines, and Mr Hugh Yang, Director of Midea Electric (HK) Ltd. gave the opening remarks and invited the sponsors to join in with the ceremonial opening.

Congratulations to the overall winning team, Robinson’s Land. The Partners Cup tournament will become an annual event, to promote sportsmanship and to maintain close connections with clients and suppliers.

2009年5月23日，菲律賓怡和機器成功籌辦首屆「怡和機器業務夥伴盃錦標賽」，於Cubao Quezon市的Centro Atletico舉行。

這個精彩活動得以成功舉辦，全賴供應商以及一直支持怡和機器的主要贊助商美的國際鼎力協助。賽事吸引了23間來自不同界別及行業的公司參加。當日活動由各健兒列隊進場揭開序幕，接著是菲律賓怡和機器總經理Mr Guenter Taus及美的電器「香港」董事楊宏先生致開幕辭。多個贊助商亦獲邀主持投擲儀式。

賽事的總冠軍由Robinson’s Land團隊奪得，該隊伍包攬了全數三個組別的冠軍，即女子雙打、男子雙打以及混合雙打等組別。

菲律賓怡和機器首度舉辦這個為期一天的羽毛球錦標賽，成功加深與客戶和供應商的關係及信任。因此，這個錦標賽將會成為週年賽事，藉此提倡體育精神，亦有助鞏固與客戶和供應商的關係。

JEC Singapore is proud to be providing a fit-out finishing package solution for the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West. JEC Singapore’s pursuit of the ITE College West project has also laid the foundation for a new business focus, with a future aim to provide more green products and solutions to contribute to Singapore’s green future.

The ITE College West project is the first Public Private Partnership (PPP) between a Singapore educational institution and the main contractor, Gammon Construction (also a member of the Jardine Matheson Group). This project will comprise the design, construction, and operation of a distinctive, modern campus.

Catering to over 7,000 full-time and 8,000 part-time students, the new campus will be situated at the junction of Bukit Batok Road and Choa Chu Kang Way in Singapore. The project is scheduled to reach completion in 2010, bringing the ITE West College’s network of five separate campuses under one roof.

JEC Singapore has been awarded the contracts to supply raised flooring, ironmongery, glass windows and glazing, and door packages. Meanwhile, JEC Singapore is also actively bidding for the auditorium seating, equipment and facilities such as classroom furniture and the artificial turf for the running track and athletics field.

新加坡怡和機器最近取得合約，為工藝教育西區學院提供裝備配套方案。是次取得工程合約，也為新的重點業務奠定基礎。公司日後將致力於提供更多環保產品及方案，為新加坡創造更清新的環境。

工藝教育西區學院的工程項目，是新加坡教育機構及主承包商金門建築（亦是怡和集團成員）首個公私營合作項目。該項工程包括設計、建築以及現代化校舍的營運。

新校舍位處新加坡武吉巴督道與蔡厝港道交界，將容納逾7,000名全日制學生及8,000名兼讀制學生。項目預計於2010年竣工，屆時工藝教育西區學院的五個獨立校舍將可匯聚一處。

新加坡怡和機器成功取得合約，負責供應高架地台、門鎖、玻璃製品及門戶配件。與此同時，新加坡怡和機器亦積極爭取其他工程項目，例如禮堂座椅、課室傢具等器材及設施、田徑場的人造草地等。

2009年6月26日，Forbo Flooring Systems憑藉Marmoleum Real產品成為第一間榮獲「香港環保標籤」證書的地板製造商。該產品即通常所言的亞麻油地板，採用有機材料製成，兼具經濟及生態效益，適合用於教育、商業及醫療衛生場所（如學校、公共樓宇及醫院等）。

香港環保標籤計劃（HKGLS）旨在制定環保標準並向合格產品頒發「環保標籤」證書。該計劃會考察產品的整個環境生命週期，從原材料到製作流程、分銷及最終處置及處理的全部過程。與此同時，香港政府亦將制定進一步計劃促使香港成為更加環保的城市。譬如，近期頒佈的法規要求政府樓宇須遵循香港建築環境評估法（HK-BEAM）。該方法乃根據樓宇的環境質素及整體性能提升可帶來的環境利益，對樓宇進行評分。

長期以來，怡和機器一直致力於保護環境。透過與Forbo等製造商合作，怡和機器可協助設計者及客戶選擇最佳的可持續性產品。在此之前，怡和機器曾與Forbo共同合作，成功完成了若干政府樓宇及私人項目，如香港濕地公園、香港科學園、嘉諾撒醫院及香港大學何世光夫人學生宿舍。

JEC Showcases its Green Solutions in Vietnam怡和機器於越南示範綠色方案

The Green-Biz 2009 event organised by EuroCham and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce took place from 17th to 18th September in Hanoi, Vietnam. JEC partnered with Hongkong Land to participate in the event, showcasing its green solutions to Vietnam’s development challenges on energy, water, transport and construction sectors. The event included a conference section which brought together key figures from European and Vietnamese business communities, government, consultancies to share solutions for sustainable development in Vietnam.

由歐洲商會及越南商會合辦的「Green-Biz 2009」，於9月17及18日在越南河內隆重舉行。怡和機器夥拍香港置地一同參加這項盛事，展示卓越的綠色方案，協助越南的能源、水利、運輸及建築行業克服發展上的挑戰。有關活動還包括會議環節，與會的權威人士均來自歐洲及越南的商界、政府與顧問公司，彼此就越南的可持續發展方案交換意見。

JEC’s Principal Forbo awarded Hong Kong Green Label for Environmental Friendly Flooring怡和機器代表的Forbo環保地板榮獲「香港環保標籤證書」

On 26th June 2009, Forbo Flooring Systems was the first flooring manufacturer awarded with the ‘Hong Kong Green Label’ Certificate for its Marmoleum Real product. The product is commonly known as linoleum and uses organic ingredients. It is economical and ecological, and suitable for use in educational, commercial and health care sectors such as schools, public buildings, and hospitals.

The HK Green Label scheme (HKGLS) sets environmental standards and awards ‘Green Label’ certificates to products that qualify. This is based on the performance of the product’s entire environmental life cycle, from raw materials to manufacturing processes, distribution and final disposal and handling. At the same time, the Hong Kong Government is also developing further plans to make Hong Kong a greener city. For example, recent regulation requires that government buildings undergo the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment Method (HK-BEAM). HK-BEAM credits buildings for their environmental quality and environmental benefits accrued from overall performance enhancement.

JEC has always been committed to environmental protection. Working with manufacturers such as Forbo, JEC assists designers and clients to choose the best sustainable products. In the past, JEC and Forbo have worked together to successfully complete several government buildings and many private projects, such as the Hong Kong Wetland Park, Hong Kong Science Park, Canossa Hospital and the Hong Kong University Flora Ho Student Residence Hall.

First launched in 2005, JEC’s Outstanding Engineering Project Award (OEPA) aims at encouraging university students to develop innovative products and creative ideas. JEC hosted the OEPA for the fourth consecutive year, and this year there were 32 applications from five Hong Kong universities.

Six teams entered the final round, each one presenting their project to an adjudication panel. All panel members commended the candidates’ excellent effort and inspiring ideas. On 5th August 2009, during the OEPA ceremony, the team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was awarded the championship. Their winning project, titled ‘The Possible Life - Household Electrical Appliances’, is an intelligent home system that aims to enhance the living standard of dwellers in an affordable and convenient way.

自2005年成立以來，「怡和機器傑出工程項目獎」旨在鼓勵大學生積極構想及創新思維，發明新產品。怡和機器已連續舉辦四屆傑出工程項目獎，而本年度的參與人數再創新高，共有32隊來自五所香港不同大學的隊伍展示其工程構思。 六隊入圍隊伍向評審團展示及介紹其工程項目，各隊伍的無限創意以及對工程的熱衷深得評審團讚賞。第四屆「怡和機器傑出工程項目獎」頒獎典禮於2009年8月5日舉行，其中香港科技大學發明的「智能生活─家居電器智能系統」獲得總冠軍。

Trane Chillers Lower Costs and Optimise Air Quality特靈冷水機組降低成本　改善空氣質素

Trane’s latest chiller, CGAM Air Cooled Scroll Chiller is designed with building owners in mind, and offers significant advances in energy efficiency. The chiller is geared to reducing the total cost of ownership and optimising indoor air quality, thus lowering costs. The chiller adopts a scroll compressor with high efficiency and reliability through employment of R410A refrigerant with the cooling capacity ranging from 20 to 120 tonnes. It is also suitable for offices, restaurants and luxury homes. The CGAM Air Cooled Scroll Chiller can be combined with Building Automation Systems such as Tracer Summit, in order to offer a flexible, scalable and cost efficient solution, customised to meet specific customer needs.

JEC – The Pool Specialist怡和機器－泳池專家Water is an essential part of life – and water is also an important part of JEC’s solutions. JEC offers a large number of services and products for swimming pools and water treatment.水，是生命的必須元素。對於怡和機器眾多產品而言，水也是重要部分，只因公司一直提供多項服務與產品，為泳池及水質處理帶來更佳方案。

The Technical ChallengeJEC has a long experience of water treatment services, not only for sewage treatment plants, but also for swimming pools.

JEC’s expertise in water treatment make it well suited to tackle the technical challenges posed by swimming pools.

There are many functions in a swimming pool that have to be taken care of in a professional way to make the pool healthy and pleasant for the users. Pools must be sanitised to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria, viruses, algae and insect larvae. This can be done by chemical disinfectants, filters and additional ozone treatment. Pools also need to be fitted with an adequate flow rate.

The installation of a water circulation and filtration systems for an outdoor swimming pool normally includes a large number of items such as: sand filters, strainers, circulating water pumps, a complete water distribution pipework system, combined ozone filtration plants, a water sterilisation system and an ultraviolet disinfection system.

Disinfection systems include chemical pumps and tanks, reaction tanks, ozonation equipment, carbon filter tank, sodium hypochlorite generator, electro-chlorinator, chemical and ozone distribution pipeworks, automatic ozone, chlorine and pH controller and indicators, sensors and other necessary accessories.

These works must be fully tested before handed over for the installation.

The JEC Offer“JEC can offer and deliver a whole package for our customers, while also assisting them after the installation, with for example, advice on energy savings that can minimise their costs,” says Jin Wong, an engineer at JEC’s Electrical and Mechanical Contracting Department.

“We deliver a total solution to the customer,” says Jin Wong. “Since we have the capability to source products from our worldwide network, we can provide quality products at a reasonable price.”

JEC can provide sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for a swimming pool project. The water in the pool can be recycled and used for flushing toilets or irrigation.

Government Projects & Exclusive Residential PoolsJEC focuses on two main categories of pools: large public swimming pools and exclusive residential pools for luxury hotels and homes. The business has grown substantially over the past few years and the number of staff in the team has doubled.

Government pools have high requirements and must follow the water quality standards of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), the international governing body of swimming and other water sports. Government projects also often have a tight schedule which puts pressure on the contractor.

In Hong Kong, JEC is one of four contractors that have been chosen by the government as preferred suppliers of products and services for public swimming pools which is evidence of JEC’s capabilities.

JEC PartnersJEC has teamed up with international swimming pool market leaders from Spain and Australia. Many of the products that require high performance and reliability come from established brands in Germany and the United Kingdom.

In addition to swimming pools, JEC can handle the construction of water features like fountain jets, aerating jets, and waterfalls with lighting effects.

Whether constructing a swimming pool or water feature, JEC works closely with the architect to create the whole system.

技術上的挑戰怡和機器在水質處理服務方面擁有豐富經驗，不只為污水處理廠提供完善服務，還擅長控制泳池水質。怡和機器的水務處理專業知識能解決泳池項目的技術挑戰。

泳池具有多個環節，全都需要專業護理，方可保持水質健康，適合泳客使用。事實上，泳池必須經常消毒，以防止細菌、病毒、藻類及幼蟲滋生散播。有關方法包括使用化學消毒劑、過濾器及附加的臭氧處理。此外，泳池也需合適裝置，確保水流充足。

要為室外泳池安裝池水循環及過濾系統，一般需要多個裝置，例如沙濾器、濾網、循環水泵、完整的供水管道系統、整合式臭氧過濾機組、池水消毒系統及紫外線消毒系統等。

上述消毒系統還包括化學泵及化學槽、反應槽、臭氧設備、碳過濾槽、次氯酸鈉製造器、電解產氯機、化學及臭氧輸送管道，還有自動化的臭氧、氯和酸鹼控制器與顯示器、感應器及其他必需配件。此外，這些裝置在進行安裝前，必須經過嚴格檢測。

怡和機器提供的方案 「怡和機器能為客戶提供完善的配套服務，並於安裝後提供支援，例如我們可提供專業的節能建議，藉此降低開支。」怡和機器機電合約工程部工程師黃展文說。

怡和機器值得客戶信賴，除了是擁有完善服務組合及尖端技術之外，還因為公司雲集各領域的專才，只要客戶需要，有關專家即可提供協助。

黃展文續說：「我們致力為客戶提供全面的方案。另外，由於我們擁有環球採購網絡，故此我們能以合理的價錢提供優質產品。」

怡和機器也能為泳池項目提供可持續的環保方案，例如把池水循環再用，利用收回的池水作廁所沖水及灌溉用途。

政府項目及私人住宅泳池怡和機器主力服務兩大類泳池，即大型公眾泳池，以及高級酒店與豪宅所配備的私人泳池。過去數年，這方面的業務增長迅速，而有關團隊的人數也增加超過一倍。

政府泳池要求嚴謹，必須遵守國際游泳及水上運動規管組織 「國際游泳聯合會」的水質標準。政府工程項目亦往往時間緊迫，給承包商構成壓力。

在香港，只有四個承包商獲政府信賴，委託為公眾泳池提供產品與服務；怡和機器正是其中之一，足證公司實力非凡。

合作夥伴怡和機器已跟西班牙及澳洲的大型泳池供應商合作，而公司許多優質產品，也來自德國及英國的著名品牌。除泳池以外，怡和機器亦能為噴泉射流、充氣射流或具燈光效果的瀑布提供產品與服務。

無論是興建泳池或其他水景裝置，怡和機器均會與建築師緊密合作，精心設計整個系統。

Most countries in the Asia Pacific region are developing their railway infrastructures. China is focusing on developing a high-speed rail network between major cities, as well as building new metro lines in many big cities. Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand also have ambitious expansion and modernisation plans.

Our ExperienceJEC has a long experience providing a range of comprehensive railway solutions to the region. Jardines delivered its first locomotive to China in 1876.

Over the past 30 years, JEC has provided specialist equipment, construction services, built technologies and support services to rail developers and operators. JEC has provided services for the MTR Corporation (MTR) in Hong Kong, the Metro systems in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the Xi’an Railway, and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand as well as others.

JEC has learnt to understand the challenges and needs of modern railway transport systems. Modern railway systems require efficient, proven designs and solutions to meet the requisite high-performance standards. Equipment must also be well maintained to ensure that the system operates in a reliable way.

“JEC can meet these demands by sourcing the highest quality items that offer all the required features. We can design a system that meets the customer’s specific needs, sourcing components and fabricating items where needed. We provide a complete solution, which adds value for the customer,” says Roy Leung, Senior Manager at JEC’s Electrical and Mechanical Contracting Department.

JEC operates in many fields associated with railway projects. Among the services that JEC provides is equipment for maintenance depots, maintenance services at stations, building management systems, environmental control systems and rolling stocks.

“In addition to providing the initial installation, we also upgrade systems over time and provide overhaul services that might be required in the later stages of a depot’s operation. In short, we act as a partner to rail operators to continue supporting both systems and customers,” says Leung.

Engineering solutionsJEC specialises in finding innovative solutions for its customers. JEC solutions for railway operations include:

Automatic air-conditioning washing system: Previously, the cleaning of the air-conditioning system in each individual train carriage was done manually. When our customer was looking for a more efficient solution, JEC worked with an overseas specialist to develop a system that significantly improved the cleaning efficiency.

Ultrasonic rail inspection vehicles: JEC provided an innovative maintenance van that, by driving on the rail track, can systematically and efficiently identify whether there are any cracks or areas where maintenance is required. This increased the track’s performance and reliability.

Platform screen and fire doors: JEC installed the first generation of platform screen doors on 20 platforms along the MTR’s Airport Express and Tung Chung lines in Hong Kong, supplying thousands of fire-rated doors in these stations. JEC’s expertise in logistics management and skillful technical resources contributed to success in meeting challenges at a time when incorporating design revisions and meeting construction programme schedules were vital.

Full Range of ServicesJEC Thailand obtained contracts from the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) to supply, install and commission tunnel ventilation systems, station environmental control systems, and a smoke extraction system for platforms, concourse areas and entrance areas on the Chaloem Ratchamongkol metro line. JEC was also involved in the construction of Hong Kong’s Kwun Tong Line, the first subway line in the city, supplying and installing chillers and air-conditioning systems 30 years ago.

Over the years, JEC has also provided building equipment and products. “We have, for example, delivered air-conditioning systems, water pumps and stair lifts for the physically challenged,” says Raymond Lin, Operations Director at the Building Equipment and Products Department.

Partnership with Railway OperatorsRailway projects often have a tight schedule and delays are not unusual. However, when Hong Kong’s MTR extended the Tseung Kwan O Line some years ago, the project was completed well ahead of schedule, enabling the MTR to open the line to the public four months early. JEC is proud to have been one of MTR’s partners that helped make this possible.

Working Together to Stamp Out the Spread of Human Swine Influenza同心合力　阻截人類豬流感散播

An influenza pandemic is triggered when a new influenza virus, to which humans have no immunity, appears or ‘re-emerges’ and spreads in the human population, leading to large scale infection worldwide. Unlike seasonal outbreaks caused by subtypes of influenza viruses frequently circulating among people, pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or recognised subtypes that have not circulated among people for a long time, and to which the majority of the human population lack immunity.

Since 2005, JEC has issued guidelines for preventive measures regarding influenza outbreaks or potential pandemics. In light of the H1N1 outbreak, JEC’s Chief Executive, Mr Alex Newbigging, and the Emergency Response Commander, Ms Alice Wong, immediately convened an Emergency Response Committee meeting in April 2009, to collectively review the planned guidelines and coordinate the support, resources, and supervision necessary to successfully implement epidemic controls.

With JEC setting the plans in motion, the Emergency Response Committee decided to evaluate the local transmission environment for H1N1, and conduct the following measures to prevent the spread of the disease within JEC.

全球大流感已經爆發，事緣是一種新型流感病毒開始或「再次」在人類之間傳播，而人類對這種病毒卻毫無免疫力。季節性流感一般由次類型流感病毒引起，然後在人類之間散播；但全球大流感則有所不同，乃由新的次類型病毒或多年未有散播的次類型病毒引起，而人類對這類病毒均普遍缺乏免疫力。

自2005年起，怡和機器不時發出指引，就流感爆發或潛在的全球疫症制訂預防措施。鑑於近期出現H1N1疫症，怡和機器行政總裁艾力．紐璧堅先生及緊急應變指揮黃雅麗女士於2009年4月召開緊急應變委員會會議，全面檢討既定指引，並統籌支援服務、資源調度及監察工作，以妥善落實防疫措施。

怡和機器已著手落實相關計劃，而緊急應變委員會也決定對H1N1病毒在本地傳播的風險進行評估，並制訂以下措施，預防病毒在公司散播。

Preventive Measures

Centralise the supply and stock monitoring of epidemic control materials. Organise, supply, and monitor personal protective equipment, such as surgical masks for all JEC employees and visitors. Provide protective suits and N95 masks for frontline JEC employees, who may work in areas vulnerable to H1N1. Provide receptionists with surgical masks and proper training on how to manage incoming visitors. Monitor closely any employees requesting sick leave, or those on business trips to affected areas, and immediately report any suspected or confirmed cases of H1N1.

Infection Control MeasuresCommunicate closely with any employees confirmed as H1N1 patients.Advise confirmed cases to seek medical care, and then stay at home to rest.Compile lists of persons having close contact with the confirmed H1N1 patients and immediately recommend concerned parties to wear masks and pay close attention to their health condition, to prevent further spread of the virus.Arrange for cleaning professionals to conduct a thorough sanitisation of any affected offices.Limit the access of JEC staff or visitors to the affected offices.

Communication and TrainingDesignate an H1N1 information corner on the JEC intranet to provide the latest news and practical advice to all JEC employees. Circulate policies and procedures pertaining to epidemic control measures by internal e-mail and post them on JEC notice boards.Announce any new information on H1N1 to all JEC employees through internal e-mail.Organise seminars for JEC staff to help increase their understanding of H1N1 and how to maintain good personal hygiene.Convene urgent Emergency Response Committee meetings if considered necessary by the Emergency Response Commander.

Other MeasuresAccording to the JEC Group Health and Safety Policy, ‘JEC is dedicated to providing and maintaining a safe, healthy working environment and safe systems of work for our employees, sub-contractors, suppliers and the public in all locations and activities.’ In this regard, we have recently installed an air purification system (RGF® HVAC Photohydroionization Cell Advanced Oxidation System) inside the air duct at all the conference rooms at JEC’s Head Office. According to the JEC Senior Manager for Engineering Equipment, Mr Tony Wong, this air purification system has proven quite efficient as a means of improving indoor air quality for modern buildings. “We employed an environmental consultant to test the air quality and found that the airborne bacteria could be reduced by over 93% in an indoor environment”, Mr Wong explained.

JEC is confident that with these effective strategies and strict adherence to personal and environment hygiene, JEC employees can help each other prevent the spread of H1N1.

In response to a request from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, JEC’s engineers designed a new drainage product specifically tailored to meet hospital needs. The SweetDitch Gully Odour Control Module has been purposely designed to remove unpleasant smells, safety threats, and the spread of disease.

The module eliminates odours whilst allowing the passage of surface water. The product incorporates a water trap in the bottom of the module which prevents the escape of odorous air. The foul air is instead forced through an odour removal section containing activated carbon. The clean air is then released to the atmosphere.

The SweetDitch Gully Odour Control Module has a number of features which make it particularly useful to hospitals:

Easy to install and maintain; Passive in operation and requires no moving parts;Uses no energy;Uses environmentally friendly high-efficiency water regenerable activated carbon; Easy carbon replacement and convenient access for cleaning and inspection of the overall drainage system.

In addition to eliminating odours, the SweetDitch Gully Odour Control Module effectively removes hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and other toxic gases, and prevents the spread of pathogens. TRAINING & DEVELOPMENTEnhancing JEC Professional Practices in Project Contracts and Risk Management 怡和機器加強在工程項目、合約與風險管理上的專業實踐

JEC’s operations span contracting, services and sourcing to enhance Asia’s built environment. To increase the JEC team’s knowledge of contract design and construction management, the Human Capital Development Department has organised development programmes between May and October 2009 for Project Management, Project Contracts and Risk Management, as well as Sales Contracts and Pitfalls. Specifically tailor-made for more than 160 participants from the engineering, frontline sales, and services and contracting divisions, the programmes were categorised into fundamental and advanced levels, facilitating exchanges of experience throughout JEC.

The Project Management programme covered topics such as project life cycle, initiating process and planning, and management of time, cost, procurement and risk. Designed in accordance with “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge” (PMBOKTM), inclusive programmes aim to prepare participants for Project Management Professional (PMP) exams. Tuition includes case studies and illustrative materials so participants are better able to gain knowledge through constructive discussions and apply the knowledge to their jobs practically.

The Project Contracts and Risk Management programme explains how to define both parties’ professional liabilities in project contracts and how to avoid liquidated damages arising from project delay, in addition to variation and retention money topics. Lecturers, analysing from a legal perspective, introduce controversial contract terms and case studies, so that JEC can improve their performance in drafting or preparing contract terms and better assess JEC’s financial risks or liabilities, thereby ensuring prudent corporate governance.

The Sales Contracts and Pitfalls programme introduces the definition and features of Incoterms 2000, including: delivery, receipt of documents, handover of goods, customs clearance, risk undertaking, and payment. JEC participants can understand the importance of trade terminology in the preparation of sales contracts to avoid unnecessary liabilities or risks for both purchasers and sellers.

All participants who have attended to date have agreed on the benefits of the programmes. Programme participants also expressed that the courses were practical, informative, and well-designed and tailored to meet their needs.

鑑於怡和機器從事不同的工程承包、外判工程、維修保養、產品供應與銷售業務，人力資本發展部為加強同事在合約制訂和施工管理上的專業知識和能力，於今年五月至十月期間將安排「項目管理」、「工程合約與風險管理」、「銷售合約和陷阱」等課程或講座，讓多於一百六十人次的工程技術、前線銷售或服務與合約後勤同事參加，我們亦特意將課程分為基礎班和中級班，增加相同資歷、經驗同事間的共享與交流。

在「項目管理」課程中涵蓋的課題計有項目流程、項目計劃與開展、時間管理、成本控制、採購管理和風險評估與管理。這課程是根據國際項目管理學院所編撰的 “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge” (PMBOKTM) 而設計，學員於完成課程後可進一步考取國際項目管理專業認證資格(PMP)。講者在課堂中多角度與學員分享公司實例心得，亦借助系統性的教材令學員以簡明方法吸收、討論，從而令他們聯繫到自己工作中的應用層面，有所裨益。

「工程合約與風險管理」課程內容包括如何在工程合約上清晰列明各方的負責範圍與權責、如何避免因工程延誤而引發的巨額賠償、工作更改條款、工程備用金等等。導師在短時間內從法律角度詮釋合約中具爭議性的條款和案例，令學員日後在草擬或訂明合約條款時，加強有關方面的意識，並準確評估怡和機器在財務或權責上的風險，以秉承公司在企業管治上的審慎作風。

至於「銷售合約與陷阱」課程內容包括國際商貿慣例二千 (Incoterms 2000) 的定義與區分，其中包括付運、文件收訖、貨物交收、報關、風險承包、付款等各方面，學員在課堂後學習到如要編寫一份銷售合同，套用不同的商貿詞彙，往往影響深遠，可令買賣雙方付上不必要的責任或風險。

參加的同事均認同課程對其工作有莫大的幫助，其中一位參加者稱：「這課程切合實際、資料豐富和令我得到實質價值。」

JEC Promotes Green Living2009怡和機器－思健同樂日

On 31st May 2009, JEC organised the Mini-Mindset Fun Day at “Our Hands Farm” in Yuen Long with the theme of ‘Green Living’. This aimed at promoting green living to all participants including clients of Mental Health Association (MHA) and their family members, JEC Caring Team members and Jardine Ambassadors.

At the beginning, the owner of Our Hands Farm introduced the concept of an organic farm and explained to the participants about each plant, vegetable, herb and fruit’s unique characteristics. It was a new experience for most of the participants and they were given a chance to learn a little more about green living. “It is a great experience for people living in the city to enjoy the beauty of nature and learn how to protect it” said Yiu Kwong of MHA.

In addition to touring the farm, the participants baked cookies and made tasty dumplings together. In line with the green theme, participants also created their own bamboo cups. One participant was originally reluctant to design her own cup, but with the encouragement of JEC Caring Team members, she overcame her shyness and eventually won the grand prize of the day. “I was delighted by the creativity of all the participants. One of them painted a beautiful panda on the cup,” a JEC Caring Team member mentioned.

The event ended on a high note with singing and an African percussion performance, which everyone joined in with. 1

2009年5月31日，怡和機器在位於元朗的「一對手農舍」舉辦了「怡和機器 - 思健同樂日」。是次活動的主題為「綠色生活」，透過各種活動，向香港心理衛生會的院友及其家人、怡和機器愛心大使和怡和親善大使，宣傳綠色生活的訊息。

舍方向各參加者講解有機農舍的運作，還有各種植物、蔬果和草藥的特色。很多參加者也是首次到訪有機農場，活動大大增加了各位對綠色生活的認識。香港心理衛生會會員耀光表示：「這次經驗令城市人感受到大自然的美妙，亦學習到如何和自然和諧共處，減少對生態的破壞。」

除了參觀農舍，參加者還一起自製曲奇和餃子，並製作了以「綠色生活」為主題的竹杯。起初，一位院友在造竹杯時顯得非常猶豫，義工們不斷鼓勵她。終於，她嘗試畫出她的第一筆，最後更贏得大獎。

其中一位怡和機器愛心大使說：「一位院友在杯上畫了一隻很趣緻的熊貓，看見他們的無比創意，我感到非常驚訝。」

活動在澎湃的非洲鼓聲與悠揚的樂曲交織中結束。

齊步上怡廈籌款活動於2009 年4月19日順利舉行。這項活動為 「思健」籌得款項合共港幣190萬元，以資助由「思健」和醫院管埋局合辦的「Teen使行動－青少年思健推廣計劃」。

怡和機器團隊和各參賽者在「2009 齊步上怡廈」活動中贏得多個獎項。怡和機器在三項比賽中贏得冠軍，分別是男子組團體賽 （怡和機器團隊一），鮑磊杯（王天平先生）和女子組個人賽（關嘉儀小姐）。黃慶華先生亦在男子組個人賽獲得季軍。

On 19th April 2009, Walk Up Jardine House 2009 successfully raised HK$1.9 million to support the ‘Health in Mind’ programme co-organised by MINDSET and the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong.

The team representing JEC participated in several events and achieved impressive results in several categories, including:

JEC Raises Funds for Community Chest Green Day怡和機器籌募善款　支持公益綠「識」日

JEC staff successfully raised a sum of HK$30,480 for The Community Chest Green Day in June 2009. With a theme of “Think Green and Ride Green”, the event aimed to encourage the public to take a greener form of transport, while also appreciating Hong Kong’s greenery. Participants who made donations above HK$60 enjoyed unlimited ‘green’ rides on MTR, Light Rail, MTR buses and MTR feeder buses on 7 and 8 June 2009. This fund raising event fostered a better understanding of the local natural environment and a sense of responsibility for environmental protection. All funds raised went to Hong Kong charities that focus on mental-health causes.

為支持2009年6月舉行的公益綠「識」日，怡和機器員工籌募善款，成功集得30,480港元。該活動以「走近綠色生活，乘坐環保公共交通工具」為主題，鼓勵大眾支持環保，同時欣賞香港的美麗郊野。凡捐獻60港元以上的參加者，更可於2009年6月7及8日，無限次乘搭港鐵、輕鐵、港鐵巴士及接駁小巴等環保交通工具。是次籌款活動有助加強大眾對香港天然環境的認識，提倡環保生活，而善款將撥捐本港多個與精神健康有關的慈善團體。
