Jefferson Times Alyssa Wooten, Principal Lauren Beith, Secretary Michele Vinyard, Clerk March 5, 2018 Dear Jefferson Families, WOW! All of our students that entered artwork for our art showcase did such a remarkable job. If you have not had a chance to check out the masterpieces, come to the library after school and take a peek. Jefferson School will choose art pieces from each grade level and enter them to the Haggin Art Museum for the 87 th Annual McKee Student Art Exhibit. This is the longest running student art exhibition in the country! The museum will have approximately 1000 pieces of art from teachers around the area. The art will be on display at the Haggin Museum, in Stockton, from March 22 through May 1, with an opening reception on Sunday, March 25 from 1:30 – 3:00. For more information regarding the McKee Student Art Contest, visit the Haggin Museum website at http://hagginmuseum.org/exhibitions/87thAnnualMcKeeStudentArtContestExhibition. Want some ideas for art projects at home? Mrs. Gleason had several simple art projects available for students and families to participate in at our showcase last week. These are simple projects that involve very few readily available items. I encourage you to try them at home. Pipe Cleaners: Use pipe cleaners to create finger puppets and make up stories, or create letters to spell words. You name it, you can create it with pipe cleaners Art with Toothpicks: Use an everyday item and create 2D and 3D masterpieces. Use toothpicks, along with marshmallows or gumdrops, attach them together and start building. See who can make the tallest tower with the least amount of items. Or, grab a piece of paper and glue, and create a 2D toothpick art piece by breaking the toothpicks and carefully gluing them next to each other on a sheet of paper. Scratch Art: You will need to purchase scratchboard for this project but you can easily find it and it is inexpensive. This is a black-and-white drawing medium in which the board has a thin coating. You can use any sharp item to etch art into the scratchboard. This is a fun one… and a must try! Report cards will be mailed home this Wednesday, March 7. Thank you for your continued support, communication, and taking the time to read the Jefferson newsletter. Feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected] or (209) 835-3053 with any questions, comments, or suggestions. Sincerely, Alyssa Wooten, Principal

Queridas familias, Jefferson

WOW!

The importance of daily school attendance must start at home, stressing the value of a consistent educational experience. It is vital for the Jefferson School District to build on this value, maintaining an essential partnership between school and home, to ensure punctual daily school attendance is a priority. Absent work completed at home is not a sufficient substitute for the quality instructions received while present in class. Should your child need to be absent, California Education Code allows EXCUSED absences for the following reasons: Illness Medical/Dental Appointment Quarantine Funeral of Family Member To spend time with student’s immediate family member who is an active duty member of the

uniformed services. Participation in religious exercise

Please call the school at 209-835-3053 if your child is absent for ANY REASON.

The parent/guardian of the student must phone or send a note to clear any of these excused absences. The answering machine is activated after school hours for your convenience, and is checked at the start of the next school day. Failure to excuse your students’ absence will result in a recorded truancy on the student’s permanent record. Being absent for any of the following reasons will result in an UNEXCUSED absence: Personal Days Car Trouble Going shopping Vacation Visiting Relatives Family moving from one home to Student’s Birthday another Oversleeping Cutting school Childcare by the student at home

Education Code 4820: Students shall be classified as truant if absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year, or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof. Such students shall be reported to the Superintendent or designee. (Education Code 48260)

If a student misses two (2) days of school per month, they are missing over 10% of

their school year.
