Design Problem: Design a home to be used for the developer to target young couples. This home was to be NO larger than 2200 sq. feet. Each person could select a site and a loca@on somewhere in the state of Texas. The Home must be a two story construc@on. It is to be designed for a progressive young couple that is considering expanding their family in the next few years. Both sets of parents live far away and come to visit about two @mes a year. Predetermine the style of the home and u@lize 75% or more of a sustainable exterior material. The remainder will be siding. Each house will use Anderson windows and each house will be built on a concrete slab.
Client: Progressive young couple
Time to Complete: 10 weeks
Solu5on: A 2000 square foot home was created with the environment in mind. Reclaimed wood and steel were used in the construc@on of the house as well as recycled glass for the front facade of the house. A reflec@ve roof was u@lized to reflect heat away from the home, and a gray water collec@on cistern was u@lized to flush toilets and water the yard. The house was oriented on the site plan to maximize dayligh@ng into the house while also minimizing glare and harsh rays. Energy efficient appliances were specified. The design should appeal to a modern day family that wants to set themselves apart. The design could easily be altered with a different style roof to accommodate a more tradi@onal styled family.

Design Problem: Your client(s) have hired you to renovate their kitchen and master suite. Create a client profile and crea@vely solve the client’s design problem. Document the design process beginning with the programming phase and working through the construc@on documents phase for the kitchen. Present the master suite solu@on via presenta@on boards. Follow the guidelines of the 2006 Interna@onal Residen@al Code and incorporate green technologies.
Client: A mother who has asthma and a son who has extreme allergies to dust and dander.
Time to Complete: 16 weeks
Solu5on: A fun exci@ng environment was created in the kitchen while integra@ng air-‐purifying systems into the area as well. VOC-‐free paints, sealers, and adhesives were specified to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ). A serene atmosphere was created in the master suite through the use of calming colors and a relaxa@on area with a beau@ful view out the window, while s@ll keeping the same IAQ factors in mind.

Design Problem: In life, ideas, people, and events can have a profound impact on humankind. As interior designers, we can bring awareness to the community through the crea@on of interior and exterior spaces that celebrate and tell the story of a par@cular person, event, or idea. The result can be iconic, inspira@onal, and thought-‐provoking. Your challenge is to u@lize the site plan provided to design an experience that explores this concept. The space is to be open to the public. Your design should include a minimum of three spaces, interior or exterior, but at least one of the spaces must be an interior component. You must write a design statement/concept for your solu@on and provide necessary sketches, perspec@ves, floor plans, etc. to adequately convey your design concept.
Time to Complete: 4 hours
Solu5on: Our team composed of four students from schools in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana created an homage to the Hurricane Katrina vic@ms and their community. The interior space was a place to reflect on the past of New Orleans as well as ponder about possibili@es for the future. The outdoor theatre area served as a beau@ful place where New Orleans residents can celebrate their town and move forward. The Mobius ring was used as an overall theme for the space due to its never-‐ending shape. A large Mobius sculpture was placed on the stage so the viewers can look through it to a new future. The site was oriented to face the river; there is also a park encircling the space joining each of these areas. The materials used to create this refuge were reclaimed wood and steel that were part of the destruc@on of the hurricane.

Design Problem: Provide an effec@ve and humanis@c design solu@on for the first and second floor assisted living spaces of a mul@-‐floor con@nuing care re@rement community. Incorporate age-‐appropriate features to insure quality of life for the residents. Address surveillance and task performance needs of the staff. Include provisions for life safety, accessibility, security, and wayfinding. Apply research findings to furniture and finish selec@ons. Strive for the best aesthe@cs, and incorporate natural ligh@ng for health and mental well-‐being. Incorporate crea@vity in the development of a func@onal, safe, but s@mula@ng environment. Client: Older Adults Ages 55+ Time to Complete: 16 weeks Solu5on: A serene beach environment was created in which older adults may age comfortably. Typical apartments for the residents were created that promoted independent living. These apartments were combined to form residen@al wings. Community spaces provided for the residents included a beauty parlor, wellness center, library, ice cream shop, chapel, dining room, sunroom, and net cafe. The layout incorporated features to assist residents and guests in finding their way. Finish selec@ons reflect ed the preferences and needs of older adults. Life safety provisions included safe egress, fire detec@on and suppression systems, and emergency ligh@ng.

In March 2007, the Interior Design students of SFA were featured in a local Nacogdoches publication, Buzz magazine. I made the cover, and a few decorating tips of mine made it inside!
