An outline of Jigokudani Yaen-koenSince 1964, Jigokudani Yaenkoen has been loved by many people all over the world. Jigokudani Yaenkoen is a place where the interesting lifestyle of the Japanese ma-caque can be observed, up close. It is also a place where Monkeys take onsen. Many researchers and photogra-phers have come to see the unique and fascinating behavior of the Macaque in this area.

Jigokudani is located in a mountainous area near central Japan. Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in the valley of the Yokoyu river, which flows from Shigakogen in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture. At an elevation of 850 meters, it is a harsh environment where snow covers the ground for one-third of the year.

People named the area Jigokudani (Hell's valley) because the steep cliffs and hot water, bursting from the earth's surface, resembled hell. However, this place is paradise for monkeys. 200 of monkeys inhabit the area at present.
