oão Feijó, stages, states, color, form and landscape as an harmonious picture of the soul

Member of the soul, the mind stadiums. The soul and mind in the great journey into the interior of one’s own.A trip to a part of everything that is established from the search for light, there is more than we look, what really motivates us to travel and transform us into the labyrinth of the golden thread of Ariadne.João Feijó understands this particular trip to Ithaca, a spectacular journey that we all, who does it, and it does coming from a self that goes looking for his super self, and above it to be.Its landscapes are states of the soul, stages of the mind, the pro-duct of emotion, the subtleties of thought. His work seems like everything is dimmed, whether the sky and water, or earth and a touch of the wind that moves everything. But no gesture, is the power of evocation of chromaticism that propels us to travel with the magnanimity of those who know that we are able to overcome all the evidence.Stadiums, states, color, shape, harmonic, and panoramic landscape of the soul in all its angles.Urban landscape, people, rush, no sense of speed in bicycles, rain, natural paved, bridges and houses, animals that go with the owner looking for what is not a mirage and that all are parts of a city.Landscapes, water, sky, houses, beautiful rural architecture, which is one ecstatic from all that lies in a set of concerns, which produces the event as if it were essential substance that everything harmo-nizes.It is a search engine independent, free, no ties, who does not want you to put labels, which is constituted as part of an effective and aggregate everything that goes further, that praises and makes to the depths of the beautiful from the reality of a certain reality that you understand how something that goes much further than it is in appearance. He presents aspects of reality, those particular aspects that are es-pecially beautiful. Because beauty is a stage of the soul, produces harmony, brings us peace, the war away from us, give us the necessary love to overcome the obstacles placed as key evidence of great precision. It is a catalyst of the soul, the moment, meditate on the here and now, because we are all on the path indicated to us the great masters who were in the world, although, on occasions, we do not know how to light it.In this case, João Feijó tells us how, and when the time stage of soul with soul, anecdote with anecdote and essence of water to water their landscapes.

Talking about modern watercolour in Portugal is inevitably talking about João Feijo, a young artist, restless and introverted, who combines with his vocation early and well demonstrated, a single preparation in all painting techniques, with particular emphasis on watercolour, whose technique he assimilated during his stay in Germany, where he completed the training received in his home country. Feijó, holder of a strong vocation, he attended the courses of the ARCO and the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (National Society of Portuguese Arts) allowing him to expose in the most prestigious galleries, not only in Portugal but also in several European countries, notably his participation in the International Exhibition of ARCO in Madrid. Being, perhaps, one of the most demanding events in Europe, this fair bets on modernity of expres-sion, where it means a guarantee of quality, pass a personal touch and a great imagination in the selection of topics and how to treat them. And this young portuguese artist large scale fills all of these conditions “sine qua non” required by the Madrid event, obtaining,

among numerous other awards, the I prize in International Water-colour Exhibition in Madrid.Since we have been fortunate to observe the painter in his envi-ronment, we can say that the perfection of the design, the formal perspective, vanishing points as determining the value framework and a monochromatic colour, with a predominance of warm colours, especially the reds, constitute a guarantee of the works that our artist presents to the public interested in art. As it is es-sential to the good water colourists, the water flows in absolute freedom by supporting elected as if the liquid element, by special grace of its nature, knowing where to go and how to do it, only the great masters of watercolour can do and this is present in the works of Feijó, who of course, does not disavow the use of other techniques or other shades in his work. It is also necessary to point out that, with the colour and matter as craftsmen, the artist forgets what he is painting and enters a game of light and shadows, rhy-thmic forms, distribution of reliefs, giving the viewer with the ideal climate for that he communicate with the painter. This is what, ultimately, is the artwork well done, work that we have to see, looking beyond and above all, it is necessary to feel, to capture all the beauty that holds the painting of João Feijó.

‘We have chosen to focus on the work of the young painter João Feijó, who started, in Germany, the craft of watercolour painting and continued his studies and education in the courses of ARCO and the Portuguese SNBA (National Society of Fine Arts). A very sober artist, who uses reddish tones in his work, without any exag-gerations of poor taste or excessive pasting that would only ‘stain’ the work. This young, worthy painter has already won the First Prize in the International Watercolour Exhibition in Madrid, as well as the Honour Award, in two other occasions, by the Multiface Gal-lery, which is another reason why we mention him in the pages of La Nacion, certain that it will serve as further encouragement to go and see his work, this year that begins, in some of the art rooms in Spain.’

OÃO FEIJÓ, BETWEEN LIGHTS

It is quite normal that light and colour abound in most of the works by authors who live near the sea, as well as the portrait of daily life of those around them, the calm and serene day-to-day of the citizens. These simple and usual dawn scenes of each day illustrate their work. Little sequences in short accounts of these successes, repeated one and thousand times in a similar way, an infinite pleasure translated into a plastic language, neighbours sitting on old traditional plazas benches, enjoying the sunshine of the day, deserted streets that serve as model of an abandoned city, iconicfacades of houses, countryside sunsets, sunrises literary. All these moments reveal a particular character shown through an endless series of funds.

The work of João Feijo runs through this narrative of influence, so rich that he continues to investigate and experience the best way to record all the events involving him every day, whether through the textures of acrylic, the liquidity of the oil, the immediacy of pho-tography, or by action of digital modelling, with its tridimensional grandeur or by the poetry of his watercolours. In any case, nothing is hidden in the various attempts to recreate what surrounds him, light-filled life often caused by the binding of colours. We are thus faced with a painter in his peculiar exercise.

42

Page 43: João Feijó Art

argarida Botelho, in “Diário de Notícias”

By privileging watercolor painting, this young artist proceeds with his path of lyric, bucolic and romantic landscape, using soft and warm tones, never aggressive, easily assimilated and of a notorious plastic exercise.

The way he portrays nature, anticipates romanticism by producing its image, in a given moment of light, shadow or development. As a drawing artist, he develops a growing taste for landscapes – green fields with woods, creeks and sunsets.

His effort (self-taught) is unmistakeably present in these waterco-lors, where we can find influences of several Portuguese painters, who have dedicated themselves to this style. We have, therefore, another potential landscape painter, who accentuates bright colours in some cases; and, in other cases, uses pale and discreet tones. However, in all of them, he expresses great lyricism, enclo-sing, in certain pieces, scenes from rural life, romantically idealized, though without much fantasy.

Anyhow, it is possible to foresee his path by contemplating the work on display. In spite of the realism with which he portrays minute shapes or houses scattered through the landscape, nature is seen with emphasized lyric eyes, performing a true labour of love.In the vague reflection of shadow over the water, in the dreamy blue colouring of clouds, he manifests an emotional representation of rural landscape.

The artist uses a minimum of aesthetic embellishments, and, on the other hand, he seeks to build a representation based on simplicity.

This doesn’t imply that ornamental aspects aren’t well marked in simplicity, because, from this exhibit, we get the feeling that the ar-tist allows himself to be impressed by research and studies.

In accordance to the glow and intensity of the colors, he creates, in his watercolors, a pleasant and agreeable atmosphere for the viewer.João Feijó, for the time being, paints in view of a well-determined public, of future generations and creators of immortality.

It is impossible for me to separate the author from his work. Maybe because I know them both! When thinking of João Feijó, it comes to my mind the image of his watercolours from the soul. Although he also paints in oil, those “stains of coloured water” are the ones I enjoy the most. With a soul of a survivor, always present in any adversity, I come to the conclusion that misfortune and troubled paths are used as nourishment for new cultures, which are becoming, each time, more resilient, stronger, and more consistent.A self-made man, he began his life adventure early, always aware of the slightest hint of wheat that might be useful to him, hidden many times within the tares falling on him.His first individual exhibition presents him with an event that shall shape his future from then on: he sells all the watercolours on display and acquires the right to lease the art gallery where his exhibit took place! These two sides of him that were born in that moment – the suc-cessful artist and the Arts Dealer – never again parted. This almost incestuous brotherhood, between the maker and the dealer, could seem, right up front, doomed to the failure of one of the parts. However, that didn’t happen.Unlike what could be expected, instead of Gallery-Owner-João attempting to sell the work of João-The-Painter, what he does is to try and obtain the best range of artists, willing to work with him; the money obtained would be used to invest in making his artwork more personal, granting less and less room to self-commercialisa-tion, thus risking to head further towards a personal direction, more substantial and more of his own. This relative financial stability achieved by the Arts Dealer will finance the Painter, while giving him the necessary confidence to risk by innovating and to evolve through research. He is a person who loves open and well-ventilated spaces, the themes where Alentejo is involved are the ones he identifies himself the most with. The spontaneity of the watercolour, which approaches the tech-nique and aesthetics of Visionism, brings out his sensitivity and his creative sense, very clear in his other “self”. This almost dream-like luminosity, splashed with just enough realism, is the most fascinating aspect of his work. What can be recognized is comfortable to the viewer and the ‘undisciplined’ part of his work, the Visionist part, transports us to where we can (and want) to go. There is always something familiar and distant, something of déja-vu and exclusive. Finally I believe ‘João-Who-Paints’ is a product of ‘João-Who-Deals’ and vice-versa. What one of them sees and learns helps the other. United in this double singularity (forgive the contradiction) we find the complete and pure man, who makes the area between bor-ders, called No-Man’s Land, his starting point. And he has brought with him his family, his friends, his colleagues and collectors that accompany him with complicity and trust.Because, when getting to know João, nobody is ever surprised, to find an even higher stake and, by inertia, he ‘forces’ us to jump along with him.

The Series of Landscapes Feijo, titled Lines Water and Southlands iconic reveal a repertoire of great formal beauty and color, where the houses sprout in a cryptic horizons that serve as reference, how to divide a frame in the three spaces land, architecture and fog. The landscapes are mostly solitary, apparently uninhabited, which gives them a peculiar poetic intensity. The field of design is present in these plastic works, inspired by color that blends the protagonist in this subject.

The Series Characters figurative or urban developed in another phase of the artist’s career, reveal the melancholy that humans feel for life. They are scenes that reflect the loneliness and the hardness of men’s everyday lives. Through invisible faces with a focus almost photographic. Here is the palette contains the red tones and ocher, with white to light an almost monochromatic intentionally causing a deep emotional charge. The titles of works reveal that climate: Homecoming (in several versions); A true friend; A free mind ... Painting with drama that merges with the affiliation of certain roots and Edgar Hopper. In short, a picture that does justice to the statement of Boethius: “Every human interests me.”

Boa viagem!

Joao Feijó invites us to join him in a journey in which he dispenses to the watercolor an approach somehow unheard of, up to now: a thorough in his drawing, preciousness of unusual quality, a pig- ment treatment always in search of new experiences using the classic technique of watercolor, i.e. using paint pigments suspended in a vehicle, however, soluble in water. This technique has through-out the history of art a much superior to the one the less aware observer can imagine. The watercolor per se has a universal dimension in time and space, present in all cultures. In the millennia of culture prior to our era of “technical reproducibility” and image, virtualization was not only portable image par excellence, but the prime technical registration of direct observation, testing, simula-tion, and illustration. And maybe we can say even more: the use of watercolor as a means is one of the most valuable areas of inter-section between the artistic expression as a form of knowledge, and therefore the research work of observation and technical analysis. Because this is so true with regard to the representation

of a lily or a hare by Albrecht Dürer or of a bird by Audubon as in a Rodin sketch or a nude of Egon Schiele. The Watercolour investigated the objective and the subjective more than any other technique associating the look acumen and dexterity of the hand more than any other technique (let us dazzle of Klingsor before the brush of a Chinese scribe, with the brush containing exactly the amount of ink required for the outline of each character). Water- color understands the Earth’s atmosphere more than any other technique. And if back into contact with the water, returns to the element from which all life originates as we know it.But even being the most difficult of the techniques, perhaps one of the most devalued ones, due to the great fragility of its support, even so, let us dive into this panorama the Artist proposes showing us a very consistent and of high quality work.

Good trip!

oão Feijó - “The Free Styler”

Pintar é algo comparável a viver.

Deixo o desafio!

oão Feijó - “The Free Styler”

The reason why Free Style (freestyle) in his work, according to him-self, concerns the way he feels more comfortable in the face of art or even the way that he surrenders and in which more develops. He doesn’t consider himself a painter “follow-my-leader”, for he does not adhere to any rules or styles that would immediately identify him or make him be understood by the artistic community. Rather, he feels that his posture is his way to be totally loyal to his creation and, as Pablo Picasso said, “an artist attached to a style is an artist sentenced”.João Feijó loves being free and without castrations in what he has created and always wants to be free from any fears of criticism that can claim him to be an artist without a defined style. That is why he accepts that it will not be very easy to be interpreted or understood, but this factor little matters to him, on the contrary, it gives him up to a refreshing joy, as he will have to be accompa-nied a lifetime without ever running the risk of being obvious. He paints, before everything else, for himself, trying to be as faithful as possible to his wills and momentary state of mind and it is impos-sible for him to paint if he feels sad something where vivid colours, fast movements, in short, the joy abound. It is why, when in a more nostalgic state of mind he creates bucolic works and midtones and transparent monologues. The same way, when he finds himself more joyful, let messages flow with his body and mind to permeate and recreate what comes to his mind in this fair occasion. So the stronger, more striking works, without major romanticism emerge, but with feelings more in line with the specific instant euphoria.Painting is something comparable to live. As there are days when you wake up with the most diverse feelings (happiness, passion, sadness, stress, distress, anxiety), so the works are born ... However, in the world of our days, it is no longer only the technique what prevails, but before the creativity, the end product that the artist can transmit, feeling more trusted than experienced in a given moment and thus immortalized. Not that the academic side is not important, but the reality is that there are many art teachers and schools that affect, to a certain extent, the spontaneity of some

potential future artistic creators...Feijó is never tired of emphasizing that teachers who are in schools and colleges of art, if they were great painters, would not be to teaching, would be painting, because the economic returns would be much more attractive... However, this is a matter on which he believes not needing to stretch too, because what really matters is trying to pass the message of the rationale of how he sees the art in itself and in his life and vice versa, because he can’t even envision-developing any other activity but to create, which he designates, boldly, as “personal enjoyment”, something far beyond himself and an integral part of his whole inner and whole being, much more than just a mere profession.Feijó loves what he does: painting, creating art! For him it is as es-sential as breathing, eating, sleeping or loving ... He believes he is a privileged because he does what he likes and wants and is also paid for it.Like so many others, he says, does not feel as the exception. He lived a tormented period, at the beginning of his career, a time of affirmation as an artist and, obviously, the recognition took a few years to arrive, however, the advantage is that, unlike the vast ma-jority of other professions, the older the painter is, may be worth more, becoming more accurate and sensitive, therefore, not running the risk of the “retirement apathy”, that so many people take to life, since the inertia takes hold of the most elderly and refers to an almost fateful wait of the “doomsday”. Regarding the various stages of this artist painting, I’ll tell you first about watercolor. It usu-ally reveals a silent and nostalgic state of mind and maybe even some new passion that rises, or a want to love again ... The works are true anxiolytics or sometimes placebos that soothe the artist carrying him to a new reality: the apparent tranquility.About João Feijó, even better, in my humble opinion, is seeing and judging for yourselves! I leave the challenge!

João Feijó, watercolors of landscapes, scenic views, which diffuse color tone. The portuguese artist creates in his watercolors panoramic landscapes of the soul, of the heart, landscapes departing from the reality tinted with sensations, with vibrations that rise and fall, meant to play with different rhythms.Chromatic rhythms that are parts of a whole course, determining the will of who intends channeling the four elements, applying them in every circumstance, whether in landscapes of water, in landscapes that show great green extensions, as if they were like a product of a moment, removing as air either in landscapes that unite heaven and earth becoming an emotional vibration.João Feijó displays other landscapes that are the product of the inner, spiritual self of the artist, but containing external references that go beyond what one sees and contemplates. This is a set of landscapes that are part of an all programmed, that are conveyed through the aguada, a subtle watery, which settles with readiness, defining what is most important in composition. The author also presents landscapes that are the product of the land, with houses, farm buildings features that connect with the need to situate the viewer in certain stops. They are beautiful, are entirely material, in the sense of wanting to settle beyond the circumstances that generated them, because there is a kind of underlying con-sciousness that drives them to the stadiums that the artist brings us to contemplate.the artist has great accuracy but, in watercolor, let fly the detail or description to the air at the time. His landscapes are free, without disguise, without chains or ditches, losing if, on occasions, on the horizon.A horizon that fits a certain evidence of self-more subtle and because he wants to express the density without abusing of matter, to settle at the moment, fleeting instant in which is the one that determines the main feature of love understood as part of a whole in which the elements and nature play a key role.
