Jogo Behaviour Support’s conference of 2016 aims to provide you with practical solutions to manage social, emotional and behavioural issues presented by children and young people.

The Conference

Who should attendThe conference is open to education staff, health staff, social care staff, family support workers, police, early years staff and anyone who is interested in supporting children and their families who are experiencing social, emotional, mental health and behavioural issues.

Dr Tina Rae

Building Resilient Teams Within An Emotion Coaching Culture – The Psychologically Healthy WorkplaceDr Tina Rae will focus on how staff well-being ought to be of paramount concern for those working in settings which accommodate and support children and young people with complex needs and mental health difficulties.

She will clarify how staff well-being support systems do raise levels of resilience, reduce work related stress and improve staff retention.

Objective:• Highlight the need to increase

levels of resilience and hardiness• Introduce key aspects of building

resilience at an individual and whole school level

• effective communication systems and support systems for staff

Dr Tina Rae will argue that in order to nurture and teach today’s children and young people in such a complex and highly pressurised contexts, it is essential that we develop and maintain our own well-being.

Dr Rae will highlight how to create effective positive change so that individuals can connect with their own resilience energy – Identifying their strengths and establishing coherence and in doing so develop a personal narrative of resilience.

She will further emphasise the importance of psychologically healthy workplaces which ensure:• Employee involvement• Work-life balance • Employee growth and

development• Health and safety • Employee recognition

Dr Tina Rae has over 30 years’ experience working with children, adults and families in both clinical and educational contexts within local authorities and specialist educational services. She is currently working as a Consultant Educational and Child Psychologist in a range of SEBD and mainstream contexts. She is also involved with Compass Fostering and as an Academic and Professional tutor at the University of East London. Dr Rae is a prolificauthor.

Dr Rob LongBehaviour Mindsets7 Guiding PrinciplesUnderstanding and supporting children and young people with problematic behaviours can be challenging and stressful.

Dr Long will provide a set of guiding principles that can act as a positive touchstone for any practitioner working with challenging behaviours. The ‘behaviour mindsets” presented in this session are based on sound theory and practice.

Objectives• to explore guiding principles for

supporting challenging behaviours• to have an understanding of the

“behaviour mindsets”

Participants will be presented with practical solutions and take away tools to enable them to further develop their ability to engage and work with social, emotional and behavioural issues of children and young people.

Dr Rob Long (D.Ed.Psych.) Dr Rob Long is a Chartered Psychologist who works independently offering high quality training in schools and colleges to teachers and other professionals who are concerned with children and young adults. Dr Long also offers individual advice and support to young people and their families - mainly in the South West

region. Previously, Dr Long lectured in Psychology and Sociology before working as an Educational Psychologist for Wolverhampton and then Devon Education Authorities. During this time he managed a Primary Behaviour Support Team and also supported Secondary schools in reviewing their behaviour management policies and practice. Dr Long’s main area of interest is supporting children who face emotional and behavioural difficulties. He is committed todeveloping, through training and project work, an understanding of these children and providing solutions and practical help to school staff involved with them. Currently Dr Long is working with the National Union of Teachers in providing professional development courses in effective classroom management and peer coaching. He has written and had published several books to support the work and training that he provides. All of Dr Long’s books offer teachers and support staff many practical ways to managedifficultsituations.

Dr Tina RaeEmotion Coaching The workshop will provide participants with information about how to “emotion coach”. It will explore the key steps to emotional coaching (as presented by Gottman), plus provide opportunties to practice the skills. Dr Rae will focus on how teachers and support staff can make use of emotion coaching in order to foster the development of emotionally intelligent and resilient children and young people.

John Murray & Carl HenryUnderstanding Exclusions and AttendanceDuring this workshop participants will gain an up to date understanding of the current guidance and regulations on exclusions and attendance. This will include

•The law and guidance on the Headteacher’s decision to exclude

•Governors’ and independent Review Panel duties and the decision-making processes

•Examine the role of the SEN Expert•The impact of human rights, equality

legislation and case law•Advice on pupil registers and attendance

codes

Kevin Baskerville Linking Sensory Issues with Behaviour in Individuals with an Autism Spectrum DisorderMany of the children we support who have a diagnosis of ASD have sensory processing issues. We examine these issues, look at checklists that can help pin point where some of the issuesstemfromandthenwecandevelopaPositiveSensoryProfile toalter thebehaviours. This workshop explores reasons for behaviour through sensory processing difficulties and then what to do about these issues within the school environment.

Sonia Murray & Rachael TaylorUsing Assessment Tools to Inform Intervention Programmes Assessment is an integral part of education, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessments affects decisions about instructional needs, individual requirements, interventions and, in some cases, funding.

This workshop will briefly explore a range ofassessment tools and how they can be used to inform intervention programmes for individual children and groups. It will offer practical knowledge to help inform practice.

Dr Rob LongThe Multi-faceted Intervention ToolboxThere is rarely one solution for any behavioural problem. In fact multi-faceted problems usually require multi-faceted interventions.

This workshop will develop a comprehensive range of proven interventions that can be adapted for a wide range of problematic behaviours.

From the M1 southLeave at junction 16 and follow the A45 towards Northampton. At the firstroundabout take the left exit signed Lodge Farm and Althorp House. Continue straight over the funny double mini-roundabout and on until you reach another roundabout where you turn left, onto the A428 towards Harlestone Village and West Haddon. After approximately one mile, go through Harlestone Village and take the right turn signed The Bramptons. Continue along this road through Church Brampton and into a small one-way system in Chapel Brampton. At the T-junction turn right and take the second road on your left signed for Pitsford and Sedgebrook Hall. It is roughly 20 minutes and 15 miles from junction 16.

From the M6 / M1 northLeave the M1 at junction 19 or the last junction before the M6 joins the M1 signed A14 East. Exit the A14 at junction 1 and after approximately seven miles turn left onto the A5199 signed towards Northampton. Stay on the A5199 for 10 miles until you reach Chapel Brampton. Once in Chapel Brampton, take the second road on your left signed for Pitsford and Sedgebrook Hall. It is located on your left-hand side and is roughly 17 miles and 25 minutes from junction 19.

From the A14 eastboundTake junction 2 towards Northampton on the A508. Just after Pitsford turn right following the sign to Sedgebrook Hall which can be found half a mile on your right-hand side.

Easy access by Train: Northampton Train Station is near the town centre and it is 1h:15mins from London Euston and 40 minutes from Birmingham.

Taxi: Please contact us if you are coming by taxi from the train station as we attempt to connect you with other delegates to share the taxi cost.
