FIGHTS AND THE RECORDING OF THEM I wish to advise following the incidents last term the College staff and Board have taken the following action: - Four students were stood down and six suspended appearing before the Board of Trustees. One student has left JPC for another school. A full school assembly and year level assemblies were held to address the issues. Myself, the Pastoral Team and Form Teachers will continue the conversations this term on the values of JPC and what is unacceptable behaviour. Please support these conversations at home. I have made it abundantly clear to the student body that fighting, recording it and the posting of it onto social media is considered “Gross Misconduct” which is likely to result in the harshest penalties of stand-downs and suspensions. MANU KORERO SPEECH COMPETITION On the 8th July at Toi Ohomai, JPC opened as the first speakers in the Regional Manu Korero Maori Speech Competition, with Anahera Mear in Senior Māori and Kya Benham in Junior English, supported by our senior Māori students. Both girls were incredible! Fluent, poised, confident, humble and beautiful. Both proudly spoke of themselves as students of JPC. The girls’ speeches were at the level of some of the best speakers we have heard in the competition’s history. We were so proud to be part of the JPC whānau and see our students stand and represent us with such mana in an important regional forum, with MPs such as Rawiri Waititi looking on. Tumeke! Nga mihi nui ki a tātou katoa! Whaea Mercia Tawera-Thomas (HOD Māori) Whaea Charlotte Kutia (Junior Māori)

congratulations To our achievers – well done!

CLAYTARGET REPORT

The clay target team have had a busy and successful few days in recent shooting events. On Thursday 8th July they competed at the Waikato regional competition where they were very successful, obtaining several placings. Jake Atkinson second in junior point score and Quintin Body third. Holly Sands won the ladies single rise, Rebecca Collins second and Holly Sands third in ladies point score and the girls team winning the team event!

The day after Waikato regional the team flew down to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools championship against 38 squads of shooters from all over the country. We were fortunate to have good weather albeit colder than we are used to. The weather may have even counted against us in the first round with the sun being directly in line with some targets. In spite of the cold and the glaring sun, the team maintained their high standard in the face of some stiff competition, making several shoot offs and finishing on the podium a number of times. Kate Julian was second in the lady’s skeet, the ladies team of Rebecca Collins, Kate Julian and Holly Sands were second, Rebecca Collins was second in the single barrel event, and Jake Atkinson was second in the Junior single rise. An excellent result once again and the team are a credit to the school both in presentation and performance.

Waikato placements: Quintin body and Jake Atkinson Junior point score (below left). Holly Sands who won the single rise (below centre), Rebecca and Holly the girls team winners (below right).

South Island placements: Kate Julian - second in the skeet (bottom left), Jake second in junior single rise (bottom centre), Girl’s team, Rebecca second in the single barrel.

Congratulations to Finn Liley, John Paul College Year 13 student, who has been chosen as the Rotorua delegate to attend the Green Party AGM in Wellington 6-8 August.

Finn has been interested in studying political science for some time now and last year joined the Green Youth Party and has been active with the Rotorua branch for the last 18 months. He has focused some of his school assessments in this area and has shown he has a great understanding and passion for his political beliefs. Well done to Finn.

This year VICTORIA UNIVERSITY WELLINGTON are running their first Māori Scholarship programme called HIWA. What is HIWA?

HIWA is a week-long scholarship programme for Māori students who are in their final year of study at a NZ secondary school/wharekura. The purpose of this programme is for students to experience being a student here, as well as living in Wellington City. Throughout the week students will attend different workshops with key staff on campus, explore halls of residence, connect with on-campus support, plus explore all the cool things you can do in Wellington (and they’ll get to attend Open Day). There is an application process, and successful students will be selected to attend the programme. When is it?

The programme takes place from Tuesday 17 August to Saturday 21 August 2021.

Does it cost the student?

No, this programme will be paid for (flights, accommodation, food etc). They will need to bring money if they want to buy other things. https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx... Applications close 2nd July.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ GATEWAY Work experience is crucial to many of our student’s potential and future pathways. Gateway gives students an understanding of what is required to be successful in a working environment after leaving school. Year 12 and 13 students interested in going out this year (one day a week for anywhere between 6 – 10 weeks), please see Rachael in the Careers Hub.
